The Last Of Us Part 1's PC Port Isn't In Great Shape

1 year 1 month ago

The Last Of Us—a zombie apocalypse game, you might have heard of it—was finally released on PC this week. That’s good news for anyone who hasn’t managed to play it over its past three releases on various PlayStation consoles, but the bad news is that, at launch at least, the game isn’t at its best.

Diablo IV Quest Designer Shows How The Narrative Sausage Gets Made

1 year 1 month ago

Diablo’s lore isn’t necessarily the popular action-RPG series’ main appeal. When you’re in the thick of it, hecticly chasing endless streams of glorious loot, it’s very easy to forget the details of where you’re fighting or who even lives in this world. Even so, Diablo IV’s developers think it has an interesting story…

Gregory Doesn’t Like Pain in the Fire Emblem Engage Fell Xenologue DLC

1 year 1 month ago

Fire Emblem Engage Gregory

Nintendo recently introduced Gregory, who is a member of the Four Winds in the upcoming Fell Xenologue DLC for Fire Emblem Engage and an alternate world counterpart to Griss from the Four Wolves. Gregory’s personality seems to be the complete opposite of Griss. However, his starting class is still Sage. In addition to using tomes to deliver devastating attacks, he can also use staves to cast useful support magic.

https://twitter.com/FireEmblemJP/status/1640609745265627136

While Griss was an extremely violent and masochistic person in the original story of Fire Emblem Engage, Gregory has a distaste and sensitivity for physical pain that is higher than most people’s. Alear, Nel, Nil, and Zelestia encounter Gregory hiding while he is scouting the terrain. Thinking that it might be an enemy, the group readies themselves for a fight, which leads to Gregory identifying himself and begging not to be hurt, claiming that he’s “not good with pain.”

https://twitter.com/FireEmblemJP/status/1640609467376041986

Same as with Zelestia and Zephia’s voice actor, Kenjiro Tsuda reprises his role as Gregory in the Japanese dub of Fire Emblem Engage after having voiced Griss in the main story of the game.

Fire Emblem Engage is available for the Nintendo Switch, and the Fell Xenologue DLC releases as part of Wave 4 of the Expansion Pass on April 5, 2023.

DOA XVV Adds a New Swimsuit and Content for Marie Rose

1 year 1 month ago

Dead or Alive Xtreme Venus Vacation Marie Rose

Koei Tecmo revealed some information about Marie Rose’s new content and swimsuit in Dead or Alive Xtreme: Venus Vacation. Producer Yasunori Sakuda and Character Designer Fubuki talked to Famitsu about the recent True Colors update for the game, Marie’s upcoming new content, and the reason to pick her as the second character for True Colors. Fubuki, who designed Marie for Dead or Alive 5, also also designed her new Twinkle Rose swimsuit. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

Until recently, characters only received exclusive swimsuits when first introduced and recolors for character birthday events. Players expressed the desire for new content for a variety of characters and to see them interact between them. The True Colors update came as a response to the feedback, and it introduces new swimsuits and new voiced episodes for select characters.

Misaki was the first character to receive True Colors content. Since she was designed as the face of Dead or Alive Xtreme: Venus Vacation, she was chosen as the first one to receive new content. However, Sakuda revealed that they had the concept for Marie Rose’s True Colors content before they even came up with the update.

Mai Aizawa, the voice actor for Marie Rose, mentioned that the character has a different type of appeal in the DOA series compared to DOA XVV. After hearing this, the development team wanted to portray Marie more accurately to her more mysterious “gothic lolita” style from the mainline series.

Bramble: The Mountain King’s Dark Themes Make it Stand Out

1 year 1 month ago

Depressing fantasy worlds are nothing new, yet Bramble: The Mountain King surprised me with its dark Nordic folklore. Instead of sanitizing these fairy tales like a classic Disney film, Dimfrost Studio openly embraces its most disturbing elements, presenting a twisted world brimming with atmosphere. Calling this grim adventure a horror game isn't quite right, though after a lengthy hands-on preview on PC, I'm finding this a captivating yet creepy tale.

Before jumping in, Bramble warns you about its heavy subject matter, which covers themes like suicide, infanticide, and animal cruelty. Original fairy tales often find young children in dangerous situations, so this isn't surprising, but it's worth noting for anyone unaware. Playing a young boy called Olle, this tale begins innocently enough with a nighttime trip into the forest to find your older sister, Lillemor. That soon turns into a rescue mission as you traverse this twisted forest.

While many games incentivize going beyond the beaten path, Bramble keeps exploration strictly linear from A to B. Going forward is often your only option with no backtracking, sometimes breaking this up through climbing or light platforming segments. You can look over a few highlighted objects on your journey, like pinecones and storybooks, and that's about it. One occasion involved turning a matchbox upside down to release a hidden key, but aside from the game's opening, I didn't find any similar interactions across three hours of playtime.

The joy of video game-themed food

1 year 1 month ago

Is themed food, or, more specifically, video game-themed food a tacky over-priced con? I used to think that, until the food also became my highlight at Super Nintendo World during my visit to Japan.

I mean, you are basically forking out for fast food with a licence slapped on. Even so, there was a particular magic to eating at Kinopio’s Cafe (or the Toadstool Cafe as it’s called in the Hollywood version), which was every bit as themed with decorations and displays as the park’s rides. And the waiting times were just as long, if, like me, you decided to go during the lunchtime rush.

Hilariously, I’d have to say my chosen main dish was pretty plain, a hamburger steak topped with an egg gratin, and a green mashed potato in the shape of a tree with a Super Star-shaped cookie on top. That was the winter special at the time. But it was the extras that made it for me, in particular having mushroom soup served from a Super Mushroom-shaped bowl!

How game development is continuing during Russia's invasion of Ukraine

Note: this article contains depictions and images of war that some readers may find harrowing.

"We are doing what we can. We are working. We're trying to unite people with games and as human beings."

That's a producer from game studio Aurum Dust, about to release its next game in the Ash of Gods series: the tactical turn-based card game Ash of Gods: The Way (27th April). The producer - who wished to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals from Russian authorities - is just one member of the development team in Russia, working alongside developers from Ukraine, Cyprus, Armenia, and more - a development team that is vehemently against Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Here's a look at Jun Kazama gameplay from Tekken 8

Bandai Namco has shown off Jun Kazama gameplay from Tekken 8.

This is a big moment for Tekken fans: Jun made her debut in 1995's Tekken 2 and hasn't been a playable character in the mainline Tekken series since. 28 years later, she's back and it looks like she hasn't aged a day. Tekken time logic!

The footage kicks off with Jun fighting her own son, Jin, but the highlight is Jun's long-awaited encounter with Jin's dad, Kazuya Mishima. It's all a bit Jerry Springer.

Oh and you can find our entire Five of the Best archive elsewhere on the site.

Be gone, drab and dreary walls of plainness, for in your place we shall have walls of kaleidoscopic colour and mystery! It certainly seems like fewer walls are left bare in games now, as though designers know the potential a well-placed tag or slogan can have, either for evoking an overall feeling, or for imparting specific clues. But the question is, which of these do you remember, and why?

The Last of Us Part 1 Is Getting Slammed on Steam Over PC Performance Issues

The Last of Us Part 1 is finally available on PC… if you can get it to work. Steam have slammed the PC version of the PlayStation classic due to crippling performance issues and crashes.

In fact, it currently has “mostly negative” reviews. “Crashes every 20 minutes,” said one review. “Game is badly optimized. Game looks great just needs to be better optimized.” Naughty Dog is currently investigating the issues, however, and has promised it's team is working on resolving them.

“The Last of Us Part 1 PC players: we've heard your concerns, and our team is actively investigating multiple issues you've reported. We will continue to update you, but our team is prioritizing updates and will address issues in upcoming patches.”

At the moment, only 33% of The Last of Us' 6,015 user reviews have reported having a positive experience, leaving a staggering 67% underwhelmed.

Atlas Fallen Delayed to August Just a Month After Release Date Announcement

1 year 1 month ago

Atlas Fallen may have just received its release date a few weeks ago on March 1, but developer Deck13 has now delayed the game by three months to August 10.

Announced in a tweet (below), Deck13 seemingly just needs extra time to deliver the version of Atlas Fallen it has always wanted to.

"We'd love to give the game some extra time which will allow us to deliver the best possible version of Atlas Fallen," it said in the tweet. "To achieve this, we have made the difficult decision to delay the worldwide launch of Atlas Fallen to August 10, 2023. We apologise for this disappointing news."

Deck13 added in a subsequent tweet: "Besides a lot of polish and optimisation this delay will bring, we're super happy to be able to now also include a full German voice-over."

Atlas Fallen was previously meant to launch on May 16, though it's unclear what changed in the 28 days between its initial release date reveal and this delay announcement.

The developer did mention showing the game at PAX East in its delay announcement, so perhaps feedback from preview events led to the delay, though it did receive a fairly positive reception.

Resident Evil 4 Remake Sales Surpass 3 Million Copies in 2 Days

resident evil 4 sales

Within the first two days of its release, sales for Resident Evil 4 Remake already surpassed 3 million copies. This includes both physical and digital versions, as well as sales from all four of its platforms. Though it obviously has not sold more than its original, it is possibly on its way to surpassing the 2005 release of Resident Evil 4.

Capcom cites the demo and positive online reviews as why Resident Evil 4 Remake has had such success so soon after its launch. Though it has a modernized story and game feel, with new visuals and engine, it still more or less follows the same story. Players will take control of secret agent Leon S. Kennedy on a mission to Spain in order to save the president’s daughter, Ashley Graham.

According to statistics from 2020, these are the total lifetime sales of the original Resident Evil 4 on its various platforms:

How the Gulf War, Apple's drag-select and "cheesed together" FMVs gave us Command & Conquer

1 year 1 month ago

There’s always been something quaintly practical about the name Command & Conquer. Sure, there’s a touch of Julius Caesar’s ‘veni, vidi, vici’ in there. But less romantically, the title evokes Internet Explorer or Acrobat Reader - sitting comfortably alongside the clearly and sensibly labelled Windows software of the mid-90s. It’s a reminder of just how early Westwood happened upon the blueprint for real-time strategy, right as many PC users were buying their first trackball mice.

Back then, the developer was fresh from Dune II, its unlikely David Lynch adaptation and progenitor of the RTS genre as we know it today. Inspired by the house politics and struggle for resources that consumed the desert planet Arrakis, Westwood had come up with an addictive formula for harvesting spice and converting that wealth into military power, which in turn could be used in the battle to secure more spice. The team was, quite frankly, surprised by how much fun that formula had turned out to be.

The Tartarus Key looks like a fabulous PS1 version of Saw

1 year 1 month ago

Waking up in a room you don't recognise with a camera trained on you: the result of a heavy Saturday night, or the opening salvo in an inexplicable kidnapping? In The Tartarus Key, a PS1-style thriller/puzzle/horror game, it's definitely the latter. The free demo is out now, and throws you into the first couple of puzzles for the game as Alex, whose last memory is of being at home in her apartment. Now she finds herself locked in a weird study in a poorly lit mansion, with only a stranger on the end of a walkie-talkie for company. It was enough to staple this game right into the middle of my disorganised Charlie Day conspiracy board of games I'm interested in, I'll tell you that much.

Tekken 8 Preview - Aggression Meets Grace

1 year 1 month ago

Tekken 8

Platform: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC
Publisher: Bandai Namco
Developer: Bandai Namco
Release: TBA
Rating: Teen

It's been more than eight years since Tekken 7 arrived in arcades across the globe. While the console version didn't hit for another two years, the gap since that seventh entry represents the largest distance between two mainline entries since the series began in 1994. Bandai Namco used that time to evolve the experience, adding several new characters by way of DLC en route to the announcement of a highly anticipated eighth entry.

With so much time since Tekken 7 launched, Tekken 8 represents not only the franchise's first game developed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, but also the first to use Unreal Engine 5. These additional tools at the developers' disposal spell the best-looking Tekken game yet, with enhanced lighting, intricate stages, detailed character models, and gorgeous particle effects.

Blue Protocol Network Test to Go Live Soon

1 year 1 month ago

Bandai Namco revealed what will be available when the network test for Blue Protocol goes live in Japan on March 31, 2023. It showed off the information during an official stream, which was around an hour and a half long. Players will be able to experience the early parts of the story, as well as raise their character to level 20. [Thanks, Gamer!]

Only Chapter 1 will be in the Blue Protocol network test, with certain side quests being adjusted specifically for this test. You’ll only be able to raise your character level to 20, as mentioned earlier, and the maximum adventurer rank you can have will be 4. Only four map locations will be accessible.

Players will also get the opportunity to try out the Heavy Smasher class. Heavy Smasher will be a close-to-mid-range fighter. Other classes include Twin Striker, Aegis Fighter, and Blast Archer. These classes are very similar to what you would imagine in an RPG. For example, Blast Archer specializes in supporting from a distance with arrows and magic.

During the network test on April 1-2, 2023, you’ll be able to receive some items in the mail. They seem to be various dyes for your character. You’ll also be able to transfer the character that you make from the benchmark program into the game. To do this, you export the character file from the benchmark folder and then import it once you’re in the game.

See Ling Xiaoyu Fight Nina Williams and King in Tekken 8

See Ling Xiaoyu Fight Nina Williams in Tekken 8

Another familiar face is joining the latest Tekken game. Bandai Namco's newest character trailer for Tekken 8 reintroduces Ling Xiaoyu. It mainly has her fight Nina Williams in the first half. However, for the second half she uses her martial arts against King.

Xiaoyu is a Tekken staple. She and her pet Panda, who is also a playable character in most entries, both debuted in Tekken 3. In addition to being a recurring fighter in the mainline games, she’s also appeared in many spin-offs like Street Fighter x Tekken, Tekken Card Challenge, and Tekken Tag Tournament.

Here is the Ling Xiaoyu Tekken 8 trailer. It refers to her as the “Dancing Phoenix.” We get to see more of her special moves when she's up against King.

As trailers are appearing at a steady clip, we could see another character or two revealed within a week.

‘Cursed’ Among Us Horse Mode to Return Again in 2023

1 year 1 month ago

among us horse

For yet another year, the “cursed” Horse Mode will appear in Among Us for April Fools 2023. You’ll be able to gallop your way throughout the various space maps on your four strong horse legs as you either kill your crewmates or complete your tasks. Inner Sloth announced it will be available from March 31, 2023 to April 2, 2023. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

The previous year, Horse Mode merely turned the characters into horses. This year, though, there will be a Horse Wrangling mode to temporarily take over Hide n Seek mode. It’s unclear what Horse Wrangling mode will be and if players will be able to play the normal Hide n Seek mode. Aside from awakening your inner equestrian, the new update will also have new cosmetics, such as hats, visors, and nameplates.

“Horse Mode” was originally a joke that Inner sloth made in 2021. However, it became a real thing in 2022 for April Fool's Day. Since Inner Sloth also ran two joke maps in a row for April Fools (“ehT dlekS” in 2020 and 2021), it may change things up next year.

Among Us is available on the PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and mobile devices. The April Fool's Day event will appear in Among Us from March 31, 2023 until April 2, 2023.

limited run 3ds

It’s the end of an era, as the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U digital stores have closed down. However, Limited Run Games announced that it will have one final physical Nintendo 3DS release. However, there is a mosaic blocking out the cover of this last title.

In the picture, we can see a Nintendo 3DS along with Go Go Kokopolo. That is another physical release from the company. The final physical 3DS game that Limited Run Games will release appears to have a lot of green and blue on the cover. Some guesses in the comments include Pocket Card Jockey, SubaraCity, and Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies. Limited Run Games will provide more information on the game, as well as its release window and price, later on.

https://twitter.com/LimitedRunGames/status/1640785732074700800?s=20

Since 2022, Nintendo talked about closing the Wii U and 3DS eShops, and it finally happened on March 27, 2023. If you’ve purchased a game and have the license for it, you can download it once more via the eShop. However, you will no longer be able to purchase digital games through it. This includes DLC as well. If you still had money in your account, you’ll have until March 2024 to transfer that balance to your Nintendo Switch account.

Limited Run Games will release its final physical 3DS game some time in the future.

The Resident Evil 4 remake plays well on PC - but tech issues compromise the experience

1 year 1 month ago

The full release of the Resident Evil 4 remake has landed on PC, bringing nearly the exact same performance and graphical characteristics as the demo - for good and for ill. That means you can expect better-than-console performance and image quality, but there are still improvements for Capcom to make - and serious bugs you'll want to avoid. With that in mind, we'll focus our analysis on the optimised settings that'll help you get the most out of the game.

Let's start with the most important setting first: image upscaling. This is key as the game's temporal anti-aliasing (TAA) unfortunately doesn't produce great results, while an enforced sharpening filter tends to degrade the image further. Even with a static camera, you'll notice that vegetation crawls, edges shimmer incessantly and the whole scene has a posterised look.

Normally we'd look to the likes of DLSS, XeSS or FSR2 to solve these problems, but while FSR2 is available it doesn't look right. The presentation with FSR2 enabled is overly soft, shimmery and some areas are visibly aliased. We'd only really recommend it at 4K, where the base resolution is sufficient to produce a reasonable result. FSR1 is available too, but it's even worse, as it compounds the image quality issues by sharpening and upscaling an already oversharpened and poorly aliased image.

Endless Dungeon: The Final Preview

1 year 1 month ago

It’s been almost a full year since I first played Endless Dungeon, successor to 2014’s roguelike tower defense game, Dungeon of the Endless, and it’s come quite a long way in that time. Whether it’s a drastically expanded roster of characters, some much-needed meta progression to make each run feel like a tiny step forward, or combat and an upgrade system that feels much more tightly tuned, so much of this exceedingly difficult defense game feels far more fleshed out. And while I only had a few hours to test my mettle against it, so far it seems like Endless Dungeon will be the roguelite evolution that fans have been waiting for.

Like Dungeon of the Endless before it, Endless Dungeon is a four-player tactical hybrid tower defense game that had me trying to escape a supernatural space station. While last year I only had two options to pick from, this time I was immediately surprised to see that the roster has grown to eight, including some of my new favorites: Fassie, a fashionable alien bartender who relies on his mixology skills whilst dungeon delving; and Comrade, a revolution-loving robot who uses his personal turrets to fight the power. Together, with a squad of friends, I dove back into Endless Dungeon’s unforgiving hallways filled with extremely rude machines and ferocious monsters.
