1 year 2 months ago

Hitman developer IO Interactive has confirmed it is working on a new online fantasy RPG.

This "bold" release is still in the early stages of development, IO stated today, sharing a single piece of early exploration concept art (see above).

"We are building a new world, a new IP - an online fantasy RPG," IO wrote in a new blog post. "A world and a game built from the core to entertain players and expand for many years to come. It feels familiar, yet at the same time IO Interactive is going on a journey unlike any we have been on before."

Or maybe it's not the Lands Between at all? Which characters will be the focus of this expansion? And what's happened to that tree?

Final Fantasy 16 is shaping up to be one of the best in the series

1 year 2 months ago

Disclaimer: This is a special version made for media to experience, and contents may differ from the final version.

A lot hinges on Final Fantasy 16. After the lukewarm response to Final Fantasy 13 and 15, muted new releases from last year, blockchain controversies, and selling its Western studios, the success of Square Enix has rested on MMORPG Final Fantasy 14 and nostalgia for remakes and remasters of Final Fantasy games of old.

Now the company is looking ahead with the release of its next numbered single player game some seven years after the last. Creative Business Unit 3, led by Final Fantasy frontman Naoki Yoshida fresh from Final Fantasy 14 success, is taking the franchise into the future with the next big PlayStation 5 exclusive.

Final Fantasy 16 has a novel approach to accessibility

1 year 2 months ago

Disclaimer: This is a special version made for media to experience, and contents may differ from the final version.

With its medieval setting and real-time action combat, Final Fantasy 16 is a game for everyone - fans and newcomers alike. A big part of that mission statement is accessibility.

Often accessibility is relegated to a separate menu with options and toggles. Final Fantasy 16 takes a more novel approach, tying accessibility into character customisation.

Call of Duty's Darnell "Hutch" Hutchinson is, quite literally, the whole package.

A new Modern Warfare 2 skin for Hutch (known as "Foxy") leaves very little to the imagination thanks to the inclusion of some skin tight tights that accentuate every curve and bulge of the operator's physique. I mean every curve.

This particular skin comes as part of the Red Fox Tracer pack.

From Super Nintendo World to Joypolis, the joy of video game theme parks

1 year 2 months ago

If you haven't been to a theme park in a long time because, like me, you either feel like you've grown out of it or don't have your own family as an excuse for such a day out, then you might feel jaded by their utopian artifices masking their capitalist tendencies to gouge your wallet for all it's worth.

Yet it's easy to be taken in by the artifice when it's done well and also happens to align with your own interests. So it is that despite not having visited a theme park in over 15 years, I'm just as excited about the opening of Super Nintendo World in Hollywood this month. Or rather, I'm excited for all of you planning to go because I already had the pleasure of visiting it in Universal Studios Japan, which is essentially the same experience.

As far as theme parks go, there's a couple things to be prepared for before going to Super Nintendo World. For one, it's a smaller area located within the Universal Studios park, with the one in Japan also containing a Harry Potter Wizarding World, an area dedicated to the Peanuts characters, and even, hilariously next door to the Mushroom Kingdom, Waterworld.

Regidrago Roars Into Pokemon GO Elite Raids

1 year 1 month ago

After a few weeks of teases and fan speculation, Regidrago is finally debuting in Pokemon GO later this week. Not only does Regidrago mark the beginning of the Sword and Shield Regis coming to Pokemon GO, but it’s also the return of Elite Raids in the game. This Saturday, trainers will have three opportunities to take on the Regidrago raid and hopefully catch at least one.

Regidrago is the fifth member of the Regi line of Legendary Pokemon. The first four added to the game are the three from Hoenn (Regirock, Regice, and Registeel) and the one from Hoenn (Regigigas). Regidrago is the Dragon-type member of the family that originally debuted in the Pokemon franchise as a part of Sword and Shield’s The Crown Tundra DLC.

Nothing has been confirmed yet about Regidrago’s Crown Tundra counterpart, Regieleki. Still, this reveal makes it seem incredibly likely that the Legendary Electric-type will be added to the game in a similar fashion. For now, fans will have three chances to battle and catch Regidrago on Mar. 11 in Pokemon GO. The hatch times below are all local.

  • 11 AM
  • 2 PM
  • 5 PM

A Timed Research will also be available to all players that tasks trainers with completing an Elite Raid. Slaying the might Regidrago will net players some Regirock, Regice, and Registeel Candy.

For those who haven’t played for a while or who haven’t tried Elite Raids before, these are unique types of raids that happen during a pre-determined time kind of like the old EX Raids. However, you don’t need an invite to join an Elite Raid. The only major catch is that these raids can’t be done remotely which means you can’t invite anyone. Make sure you go somewhere highly populated or invite a bunch of friends.

Life By You Announced and Developed By Former Sims Studio Head

1 year 1 month ago

Step aside, Sims, it is time for a new life simulation game to sweep players off their feet. The former head of The Sims Studios, Rod Humble, has taken on a new project under Paradox Tectonic and it may just be the new take on Sims that players have been wanting since the fourth game’s release, and it’s called Life by You.

The new Paradox sim game was officially announced via a teaser trailer on March 6, 2023, showcasing a good amount of possible features in a short amount of time.

From building houses to building families, Life by You seems as though it is bringing competition to the Sims franchise after the latter’s domination of the life simulation genre for over two decades.

The teaser shows gameplay mechanics Simmers have been wanting in The Sims 4 for years, such as cars and even buses. The world seems open as well, a feature that many players have been missing from the Sims’ previous title.

Seth Rogen’s TMNT: Mutant Mayhem Boasts Impressive Spider-Verse-Like Animation

1 year 1 month ago

Nickelodeon Animation Studios has just released the teaser trailer for its newest attempt at the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.” Produced by and co-starring Seth Rogen, this installment seems to have a great deal more potential than some of the previous attempts to bring the mutated terrapins to the big screen.

With the likes of Paul Rudd, Giancarlo Esposito, Jackie Chan, and John Cena, the cast alone is enough to give “Mutant Mayhem” a chance to be something incredible. It will be interesting to see how some of these actors will adapt from their grittier roles into something tailored more toward children.

Along with the cast, the animation style shown in the trailer is dark and muted, a far cry from the styles used in most children’s animation. The art style demonstrates a clear influence from “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” which should give detail-oriented viewers one more reason to head to theaters this summer.

Cities: Skylines II Begins Construction for 2023 Release

1 year 1 month ago

The elaborate city-building mechanics of the original Cities: Skylines brought a new era for simulation games thanks to its modernized visuals and convoluted management systems. Since then, fans have been waiting for another release, and now they can finally rejoice with the revamped sequel, Cities: Skylines II.

Compared to its predecessor, you’ll notice that the game’s environment has been completely remodeled to mirror contemporary times with its present-day architectural builds and technological advancements. But, of course, we also have to consider that the original launched back in 2015, so it is no surprise that the artwork has been improved.

While there aren’t many details on what the sequel will bring, there seems to be a more complex management system, increasing the challenge for dedicated fans and newcomers. Every decision you make will also shape how your city runs, where you can think of tactical plans to bring in residents, tourists, and thriving businesses. At the same time, players must ensure that the needs of their people are met by fulfilling any desires or requests.

Sentinels’ SicK Has Been Arrested; Here’s What Could Happen Next

1 year 1 month ago

As reported by George Geddes of Dot Esports, former Sentinels starter turned substitute, Hunter “SicK” Mims has found himself in jail. This follows an incident with a local car dealership as SicK refused to leave the premises.

The news of the incident comes days after SicK tweeted out that he was at the dealership in question. In a deleted video, SicK could be heard arguing with employees at said dealership, which ultimately led to his appearance in jail. He’s being charged with a Class B misdemeanor, and he has yet to be released from prison, according to Dot Esports, with a fine of up to $2000 or a jail term of 180 days serving as his punishment.

Since last year, SicK has been dealing with mental health-related issues, which led to him stepping down from the active roster and pro play. He returned after a short break, stating he was ready to compete but hasn’t been offered a shot at competing since he stepped down. As mentioned, SicK is listed as a substitute for Sentinels and has found himself streaming Valorant quite a bit in his off time.

Hogwarts Legacy PS4 & Xbox One Versions Have Been Delayed, Again

1 year 1 month ago

Although the PS4 and Xbox One versions were initially supposed to launch in April for Hogwarts Legacy, the game’s official Twitter account has stated that the developers will need to delay it for another month. The reason for this pushback is the fact that the team needs more time to adjust its performance with these systems, especially since there have been a few issues with PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.

According to the Twitter post, players can expect its PS4 and Xbox One releases on May 5, 2023, as long as there aren’t any other problems. However, some fans on the forums wonder if Avalanche Software should even put out these renditions, given that it’s already late in the game. Others believe these systems won’t be able to handle Hogwarts Legacy’s high-performance rate, so they should nip it in the bud to focus on future updates or DLCs.

Genshin Impact Players Are Flocking to Twitter to Fix the Newest 5-Star Character, Dehya

1 year 1 month ago

Genshin Impact players haven’t been happy about the 5-Star Pyro character, Dehya, since before her release. However, now that she’s officially in the game and people have had a chance to play her, players are calling for changes on social media.

The hashtag #FixDehya started trending on Twitter with a graphic that included a few kit changes. The changes highlight the major issues with Dehya’s abilities that make her one of the worst characters in the game.

The changes include things like increasing how often her skill hits to one time a second, which is a similar time to other units in the game. Another idea was to make her burst attacks count as normal attacks, a major issue in her kit that doesn’t allow her to be used effectively with many of the supports in the game.

Redfall Q&A Confirms Dynamic Difficulty Scaling & No Cosmetic Microtransactions

1 year 1 month ago

Redfall is the next big project from Arkane Studio, the heads behind Dishonored and Deathloop, throwing players into a mashup of Left 4 Dead and vampires in the quaint town of Redfall, Massachusetts.

With Redfall rapidly approaching its May 2023 launch, the developers behind the upcoming first-person shooter took the time to answer some fans’ burning questions. The Q&A session took place on the official Discord server and revealed a ton of juicy details to keep the hype rising.

For the unaware, Redfall is primarily a single-player experience, but it can also be played in co-op, which was a target of a few questions. Two of the most notable questions inquired about the difficulty scaling, as some single-player/co-op experiences find themselves unfairly balanced, and whether or not Steam players can benefit from crossplay with Game Pass players.

In response, Arkane Studios mentions that there will be a dynamic difficulty scaling system in place, adjusting the enemy difficulty as more players band together or for those who prefer a solo experience. However, these “aren’t blanket changes” meaning some portions will be naturally designed to be easier or harder. Along with that, Redfall features crossplay between Steam and Game Pass players, which is great news for crossplay hopefuls.

Eren Yeager Could Never Be Right in Attack on Titan, & That’s the Point

1 year 1 month ago

At this point, it’s safe to say that one of the things Attack on Titan will be remembered for the most is Eren Yeager’s radical shift in characterization.

This doesn’t refer solely to the fact that he has become an all-powerful Titan that uses his size and influence to crush humans underfoot though. Instead, it refers to his becoming the type of person that treats others as lesser than him and who forces his will upon others to strip away their freedom. He has become the tyrant he railed so hard against, and does so in the name of ensuring his home and those he cares about remain free for the foreseeable future.

The fact that Eren ends up playing this role continues to be one of the biggest points of contention among fans of the series. After all, Eren’s turn toward extremism takes him from being the series’ problematic hero to acting as one of its most despicable villains yet. Even if the story leads toward a moment of redemption for him, it’d be understandably difficult — if not impossible — for fans to make peace with the fact that he chose to become a genocidal maniac in order to achieve his dreams.

And yet, there’s an integral facet of this subject that get’s overlooked far too often. It’s key to the discussion surrounding Eren’s rise and fall, and to better understanding why he moves toward taking the actions that he does.

As for what the topic is, it basically boils down to this: Eren could never have made a “right” choice in Attack on Titan, because he represents the flawed morality of the show’s world.

Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania Review – Sword or Whip?

1 year 1 month ago

Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania on PC

I know it’s cliched to call something “the gift that keeps on giving”, but there truly is no other way to describe Dead Cells. The game originally launched via Steam Early Access in 2017 before getting its full release in 2018, and since then, developing studio Motion Twin has been pumping out new content and updates for it non-stop. We’ve gotten multiple new biomes, along with plenty of other small crossover updates with popular IPs like Skul, Shovel Knight, Hollow Knight, and Hyper Light Drifter. These smaller content updates have been nice, but Dead Cells’ latest add-on is its most exciting one yet.

From day one, it’s been clear that Dead Cells was heavily inspired by the Castlevania series. While it is a rogue-lite at its core, it also incorporates various Metroidvania elements into its gameplay loop. They come in the form of little elements like the slow reveal of the sprawling map as you explore a level, the carnivorous meat diet that serves as your healing items, and of course, learning new permanent abilities that let you access previously closed off areas in a biome.

With that in mind, Dead Cells’ new Return to Castlevania add-on feels like the ultimate love letter to its main source of inspiration. With a handful of new levels and weapons, cameos by Simon, Richter, and Alucard, and a rearranged soundtrack, Return to Castlevania is peak Dead Cells. Even as someone who’s never so much as touched a Castlevania game (does Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night count? No? I’ll see myself out then), I found myself swept away by all the love and care that’s gone into making this little expansion.

Splatoon 3’s Second ‘Big Run’ Was Even More Competitive Than the First One; Here Are the Results

Here’s the high score (number of eggs) needed in order to get each trophy:

This Tiny Change Made David So Much Scarier in HBO’s The Last of Us

1 year 1 month ago

This week’s episode of HBO’s The Last of Us was an exciting one. Titled “When We Are In Need”, this is the episode that really kicks things into high gear. Do be warned that we’ll be getting into spoilers for episode 8, so look away if you haven’t seen it yet.

In episode 8, we were introduced to David, who is one of the most terrifying villains not just in The Last of Us, but in gaming as a whole. He’s a really creepy dude who came across as someone with possessive and even pedophilic tendencies in the game but there are a couple of very subtle changes in the HBO adaptation that make him even scarier.

And this might come as a bit of a surprise, but the changes aren’t with David himself; they’re with Ellie.

In the original game, when Ellie first gets the drop on David and James with the deer, she’s very adept with the rifle. She points it at both men confidently, and she clearly knows her way around it. Even David says as much.

Her aim is steady, and it’s very clear that she’s not messing around. Up to this point in the game, we’ve seen that game Ellie is very proficient with the rifle, and we know she could kill both of them on the spot if she wanted to.

A Fan Created an Ocarina of Time-themed Mario Kart Track, and We Wish It Were Real

1 year 1 month ago

Never underestimate the power of modders. They are often responsible for creating content we wish were official. Recently, RiazorMC on YouTube showed off his Ocarina of Time Circuit—a Zelda-themed Mario Kart 8 Custom Track that features a race around Hyrule.

Anyone who has played Ocarina of Time will instantly fall in love with this custom track. I’d even say it’s better than the Hyrule Circuit course that actually appears in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. That’s because the course is literally Ocarina of Time 3D’s Hyrule with very few changes.

RiazorMC’s custom course starts with racers lined up at the Great Deku Tree. They travel through the Kokiri Forest and into Hyrule Field. They then make a right turn into the Gerudo Valley and Fortress. All of the familiar landmarks are there.

For lap two, racers make their way back through the valley and glide above the river into Lake Hylia. Of course, there’s an underwater section here before making their way back to Hyrule Field.

For the final lap, racers head to Death Mountain by way of Kakariko Village. They navigate up the rocky terrain using anti gravity and cross the finish line at the top of the mountain.

The only downside of this custom course is that the route doesn’t seem very clear since there is no defined path or track. A road to follow along or even arrows pointing in the right direction would help guide racers.

RiazorMC is no stranger to modding Nintendo content; his channel is full of amazing ideas for other custom Mario Kart courses and other game crossovers, such as Pokemon Heart Gold in Super Mario Galaxy, which was posted last month.

You’ll have to check out the full video for his Ocarina of Time Circuit custom course, which you can view below.

The New Mario Kart DLC Makes Me Want Another Yoshi’s Island

1 year 1 month ago

Mario Kart players are being treated to the next wave of the Booster Course Pass DLC later this week, and while most of the courses being added are ones that are returning from previous games, there’s one in particular this time that is brand new. Yoshi’s Island is a totally new course, and the trailer introducing it has fans feeling nostalgic.

The 16-second clip featuring the new Mario Kart 8 Deluxe course features snippets of what we can expect to see while racing and also includes an arrangement of the Athletic Theme from Yoshi’s Island. There are familiar aspects from the game, such as winged clouds, Shy-Guys on stilts, Huffin Puffin with its chicks, and more.

Some fans felt so nostalgic after watching the footage that it made them wish for a new Yoshi’s Island game.

Most fans are familiar with the original, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, but there were also two additional games in the sub-series after that: Yoshi’s Island DS and Yoshi’s New Island.

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 4 Gets Brief but Hype Reveal Trailer

1 year 1 month ago

It’s been a long time coming, but the Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi franchise is back with an all new entry.

In a trailer showcased during the Dragon Ball FighterZ World Tour Finals stream held on Mar. 5, it was revealed that Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 4 is currently in development. other specifics regarding the title, such as its release date and which consoles it will be available on, have not been secified as of this article’s writing.

The trailer itself was also sparse with details pertaining to the game. Compiling footage from past Budokai Tenkaichi games, it started off with clips from the first Budokai Tenkaichi before moving onto footage from the second and third games. All of the footage is shown via a digital version of an old-fashioned TV which the games would have been played on when they originally released.

The footage progresses until reaching a clip of Goku powering up so that he can transform into a Super Saiyan. As he does though, the screen cuts to black and returns with new footage of a high-fidelity Goku transforming into his Super Saiyan Blue form. The text “Get Ready for Battle” flashes across the screen before Goku cracks his knockles, and “A New Budokai Tenkaichi Begins” closes out the teaser.

It’s definitely not the most detailed teaser ever, but it delivers the message of the series’ return well enough. Those interested can view the teaser via the FighterZ World Tour Finals stream archive, and we’ll add in the official trailer down below as soon as we’re able.

While Star Wars has incredibly dramatic visuals, the iconography can still be easily recognized with only a minimalist outline, which is great for tattoo enthusiasts who aren’t looking to break the bank on a full-arm, colored tattoo.

While large tattoos are breathtaking, some of the most striking tattoos can be the smaller ones, or those with a toned-down color palate that still rep your appreciation for the series. Of them, these are our favorite picks for the 10 best Star Wars tattoos that won’t cost an arm and a leg.

Super Auto Pets replaces emoji artwork with new animal pics

For a long time, Super Auto Pets used a strange and clever (and cheap!) source of artwork for its attacking animals: emojis, scaled up far larger than they appear in WhatsApp messages from your mum. The super auto-battler did eventually start making custom artwork for its later expansions, but much of the furious fauna was still emojis. That has now changed with today's patch, going back to replace all the old emojis with new animal pictures. Goodbye, old friends.

I'm finally learning poker hands because of a fantasy deckbuilder RPG

1 year 1 month ago

As I have complained about mightily in the past, I grew up somwhere that didn't have much in the way of entertainment, so me and my friends had to engage in the time honoured tradition of making our own fun. Once we reached about age 17 this included playing poker with a shared second-hand chip set, and trying to do beer centurions (the progress in the latter affecting our interest in the former). I was never any good at it because, though poker was a fixture for several years, I was never really able to learn the rules. What hand is good? Why has your hand beaten his hand? But the little pictures are the best, I don't understand! It's disappointing because understanding poker is a cool adult thing, plus not understanding it makes certain pivotal scenes in James Bond films quite hard to parse.

Last week we got an email (shout out Aidan) singing the praises of Aces And Adventures, and I do try to check out recommendations from readers, even if I don't have time to reply or to write about the games. In this case I've made a special because Aces And Adventures is a great game that is teaching me winning poker hands through the medium of a dwarven warrior smashing things.

RPS GOTY Revisited: 2011's Skyrim is the face that launched a thousand memes

When Skyrim came out I was a student, and I worked in Gamestation (RIP) to help pay for chicken noodles. I remember the hype around it very clearly because Gamestation had a deal where you could buy it for like £22, and I had a sideline going when the stock was low to keep some back for my friends. Apols if you were caught in the crossfire for that, but dragon fever was running high off the back of a still very cool trailer, and shouting Fus Ro Dah was the only cure.

In the years since, Skyrim has been released and re-released many times, on every conceivable platform. "Arrow to the knee" jokes became de rigueur and hacky almost overnight, and at this point might have horse-shoed back around to being funny again. There are many examples of unrelated games or videos that cut to black fading back up into the opening of Skyrim, in a kind of sub-genre of rickroll. Does it hold up now? Kind of. It's a really fun, ambitious RPG, with faults - but if the faults didn't exist maybe it wouldn't have been as popular as it was.
