Dead Space remake review - a horror original re-engineered as a franchise prequel

1 year 2 months ago

The not-so-good ship ISG Ishimura is around 62 years old by the time Isaac Clarke arrives there in Dead Space. During its long career as a "planet cracker", this unpleasant hybrid of Nostromo and whaling vessel has been modded and expanded in grander and smaller ways. Even playing a newcomer - part of a small team sent to repair the Ishimura following a loss of comms - you feel that history of alterations as you stomp from sector to sector, fixing up broken systems while demolishing the, as it transpires, horribly mutated undead remnants of the crew.

Each section is an architectural battle between elementary worker needs such as guardrails and the requirements of enormous machines, with the argument typically falling in the machines' favour. The age and quality of the fittings also reflects a corporate class divide: the bridge is a gleaming concert stage with fancy free-standing glass displays, while the mining and maintenance decks are a warren of rust and asteroid debris, with huge turbines roaring away inches overhead. It often feels like more thought has been given to the placing of snack vending machines than life-saving fixtures like O2 dispensers. The aforesaid zombies or "Necromorphs" have set their own stamp on the décor, filling whole decks with carpets of grumpy biomatter, and turning every human-sized vent into an object of menace.

Season: A Letter to the Future review - a thoughtful premise with some minor snags

1 year 2 months ago

Do you keep a journal? I used to. Initially, I tipped all my kid-shaped thoughts into a book with citrus-scented pages, and then my teenage dreams and devastations fell into a navy diary with golden trim and a flimsy lock. Several years later, I moved on to blogging and learned, very much the hard way, not to blast every waking thought and irritation onto the internet.

My journal was a confidante. Sometimes, a therapist. But with every other tangent and run-on sentence - some things never change, I guess - it's hard to imagine them being interesting to anyone in years to come. It was not, and never will be, an anthropological artefact to house the sights, sounds, and souls of a dying civilisation.

That's what Estelle set out to create, though. Unsettled by a portentous dream, her people prepare for the changing season, a poetic phrase that marks the end of the world; well, the end of the world as these people know it, anyway. But even though the fine folk of Caro are nestled high up in the clouds and safe from the turmoil below, Estelle wants to do more than sit and accept the season's end this time. Instead, she wants to archive the current season to inform and educate those in the seasons yet to come.

Tray Racers is riotous, simplistic fun

1 year 3 months ago

If you've ever found joy in rolling down a grassy hill or sliding down snowy slopes on a homemade toboggan, then Tray Racers could well be for you. It's a game in which a bunch of kids race down sand dunes on - what else? - a tray, all aiming for the fastest time.

Tray Racers comes from Bit Loom, the developers of Phogs (the puzzle game about a floppy two-headed dog creature), and has a similar sense of colourful whimsy. Here there's even a lizard-dog called Scrump you can pet between races.

It's a lot of fun to play, too, though I'm not sure how long that will last beyond a few rounds. Still, as a free-to-play game coming soon to PC and Switch (with crossplay), it's an easy recommendation for a quick go at the least.

Naughty Dog "moving on" from Uncharted, open to The Last of Us Part 3 if it has a "compelling story"

1 year 3 months ago

Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann has stated the studio is "moving on" from Uncharted, and it could do the same with The Last of Us if it doesn't have a "compelling" enough story to tell for Part 3.

In an interview with BuzzFeed, the developer acknowledged fans are eager to hear more about the prospect of a third story in its The Last of Us series. However, Druckmann was keen to stress that just because something is successful, it doesn't necessarily mean it needs a sequel.

Druckmann stated Naughty Dog is in a "very privileged position" with Sony, with the publisher "[supporting the studio] every step of the way to follow [its] passions", meaning it wasn't feeling any pressure to make a sequel.

Activision is making Warzone 2.0 more like Warzone 1

1 year 3 months ago

Activision is making significant changes to Warzone 2.0, and a lot of it sounds like going back to Warzone 1.

While Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2.0 enjoyed a massive launch late last year, player dissatisfaction has grown since then. While we don't have concurrent player numbers on console, according to SteamDB, Modern Warfare 2 player numbers have dropped off steadily following a peak in early November.

In a blog post, Activision outlined what changes Warzone 2.0 players can expect when Season 2 launches on 15th February.

Six months after becoming a publicly traded company, FaZe Clan could be at risk of being delisted

Things aren't looking good for FaZe Clan's market value. The organisation of esports professionals and gaming influencers began trading on Nasdaq (an American based stock exchange) last July, becoming one of only a few esports companies on the market.

However, just six months down the road, its stock is dropping and then dropping some more.

In fact, at the time of writing, its stock is sitting at $0.75 per share (see header above).

Activision details improvements for Call of Duty's awful user interface coming with Season 2

1 year 3 months ago

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2.0 launched with a user interface that was widely panned by players. With the launch of Season 2 on 15th February, Activision hopes that sentiment will change.

The interface used to navigate between Modern Warfare 2, Warzone 2.0 and DMZ is a tile interface some have compared to Netflix or Hulu.

Perhaps worse than that is the in-game menu system, which makes it difficult to work out where you are or where you're meant to go to get to what you want.

EA confirms Dead Space New Game Plus, secret ending

1 year 3 months ago

EA and Motive's Dead Space remake will have a New Game Plus mode included on its release.

The Dead Space team has kept details on this new mode fairly brief so far, but has confirmed it will come with a Level 6 Advanced Suit (nice), New Phantom Variant Necromorphs (scary) and, perhaps most interestingly, a secret ending (ooh).

This secret ending will more than likely link to the "Reunion" trophy that Vikki reported on last week. To get this achievement, players will need to "see the alternative ending on any difficulty mode".

Warzone 2.0 DMZ's brutal AI to get nerfed with Season 2

Call of Duty Warzone 2.0's DMZ mode is set for some significant changes with the launch of Season 2 on 15th February.

"All-new missions are coming to Season 02 including a refresh of your current faction mission progress and an inventory (contraband and keys) reset," Activision said. "We will be detailing all the need-to-know intel for DMZ ahead of Season 02 in an upcoming blog."

Tango Gameworks' exuberant rhythm adventure Hi-Fi Rush surprise-launches today

1 year 3 months ago

Following a bit of a leak ahead of Microsoft's Developer Direct showcase, Tango Gameworks has formally unveiled its latest project, Hi-Fi Rush - a rather glorious-looking rhythm adventure that's getting a surprise release today on Xbox, PC, and Game Pass.

Hi-Fi Rush - which follows the eye-searingly colourful escapades of wannabe rockstar Chai and his pet cat - is quite the departure from Tango's largely horror-focused previous output (which includes the likes of The Evil Within and Ghostwire: Tokyo), trading spooks for something considerably more exuberant.

Calling to mind some of Sega's classics (Eurogamer's Martin Robinson excitedly described it as "PNO3 meets Jet Set Radio Future" at one point during its unveiling this evening), Hi-Fi Rush is a rail-swinging, robot-pummelling adventure that all unfolds to the rhythm of its music.

Here's a look at Minecraft Legends' cross-platform PVP mode

1 year 3 months ago

Tonight's Xbox Developer_Direct showcase has debuted footage of Minecraft Legends' PVP multiplayer mode, which will be included at launch as a separate part of game, distinct from its campaign.

In Minecraft Legends, PVP is a cross-platform affair for up to eight players, split into two teams. Each team's objective is to capture and destroy their opponent's base, while building up defences around their own.

As in the main Legends campaign, PVP areas are procedurally generated - a nod back to the vanilla Minecraft. Also included are the Piglins, PVE enemies who act as a third faction intent on frustrating both sides.

Disney Dreamlight Valley getting multiplayer, Encanto, and more in 2023

1 year 3 months ago

With Disney Dreamlight Valley's seasonal festivities now well and truly over, developer Gameloft is turning its attention the village life sim's year ahead, promising the likes of multiplayer, Encanto, and more in a new content roadmap.

While multiplayer is perhaps the most notable (and intriguing) addition for Disney Dreamlight Valley in 2023, there's little to report until Gameloft is ready to say more than just that single word. Thankfully, the rest of its roadmap is more illuminating, starting with the fact the early access game's next update is scheduled to arrive in February.

This introduces an "exceptionally unexceptional" new villager - revealed to be Encanto's Mirabel Madrigal in the accompanying picture - plus a "special snowman" linked to new secrets in the Frosted Heights biome. And if that's not pointing to Frozen's Olaf then I'm all out of ideas.

A new golden age for JRPGs

1 year 3 months ago

Game of the Week goes out to all of our supporters as part of the Eurogamer Essentials newsletter. There's going to be a slight shake-up of the supporters program in the near future (don't worry - it's all good news) so stay tuned for more details. Thanks as ever for your support - it's much appreciated.

There's a quote I'm guilty of rolling out a few too many times about how the golden age of science fiction is, in fact, 12 - a cute way to point out that the works we are often most fond of are the ones we encountered in those long years of our youth when we've bountiful free time and a sense of wonder that's yet to dull. It's a point that lends itself perfectly well to videogames, I'm sure you'll agree.

When it comes to the golden age of the JRPG I'm sure we've all got our own thoughts. The early 90s are always hard to argue against, when you had Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy in their 16-bit pomp while the likes of Earthbound and Chrono Trigger offered fascinating twists on the form. Maybe it's the mid-00s, when Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy delivered their two finest entries - for me, anyway - within a year of each other with Journey of the Cursed King and FF12. Perhaps it's that weird purple patch that brought us Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon in quick succession.

Our takes on the indie games nominated for the IGF 2023 Awards

1 year 3 months ago

Every year, in March, the Independent Games Festival celebrates the best indie games of the past twelve months. It's one of the only celebrations where smaller games, made by smaller teams, are not overshadowed by hulking blockbusters. And it always serves as both a great reminder of what was released, and a way to highlight some of the excellent things we all might have missed.

So as the nominations for this year's IGF Awards are announced this year - its 25th year, believe it or not - I thought I'd take the opportunity to recap our coverage of the nominees while rounding them up. The IGF Awards will take place 22nd March at 6.30pm Pacific Time (2.30am UK time, 23rd March), and be streamed on Twitch.

Let's start with the biggie, then, the Seumas McNally Grand Prize. The nominees are Tunic, Immortality, The Case of the Golden Idol, Neon White, and Not for Broadcast. I'll discuss them game by game.

Those on Xbox, meanwhile, will have access to the campaign and its four-player split screen multiplayer. This is an updated version of GoldenEye 007 for Xbox consoles, and will include achievements, 4K resolution, a smoother framerate and alternative control options. In short, I know what I am doing on Friday night.

This 1TB portable SSD is down to £60 using this £10 off code

Portable SSDs are jolly useful for quickly transferring large files, like Steam game file backups or 4K videos, from device to device. I've said before in similar blogs that I use one to ferry videos from my computer downstairs to my TV, but I also rely on one to quickly set up a PC for performance testing and copy game files to my Steam Deck.

They do, in fact, make the remake scarier.

Have You Played... Life Is Strange 2?

1 year 2 months ago

I've come to regard the four main games in the Life Is Strange franchise as kind of like the siblings in a big family. There's the eldest, who will always be heaped with praise because no matter what the others achieve, she did it all first. Her twin is always keen to remind you that even though she's the younger and perhaps not quite as accomplished half of the duo, she's more charismatic and less coy about who she is and what she wants. Then there's the youngest, who's extremely likeable, in large part because she's learned what behaviours to avoid just by watching the others make mistakes; even if she's modelled herself on the eldest a bit too closely in her quest for approval, and so hasn't really forged her own identity.

Then there's Life Is Strange 2: the awkward middle child. Still very recognisably a member of the family, but the one that stands out in all the photos because he's just a bit gawky. He's experimented a lot with his storytelling and plotline in an attempt to make himself stand out, and it's only sort-of worked. His romantic subplots are underdeveloped, his villains are one-dimensional, and his attempt at tackling a Very Serious Issue has grown in all crooked.

40 developers staged a strike at Ubisoft Paris

Last Friday afternoon, 40 developers from Ubisoft Paris gathered to strike in the first labour stoppage of Ubisoft’s history. It's the capper on what has been a turbulent month for the company. Three weeks ago Ubisoft announced they were cancelling three unannounced games amid “worsening macroeconomic conditions.” In a letter to employees, CEO Yves Guillemot said that “the ball is in your court” in regard to hitting deadlines and overturning Ubisoft’s sticky financial situation. French union Solidaires Informatique said that Guillemot’s "words mean something: overtime, managerial pressure, burnout, etc," and called on Ubisoft Paris employees to strike for better pay and working hours. It seems some devs heard the call.

The Settlers: New Allies offers a fresh yet familiar take on the 30 year old series

1 year 2 months ago

The road to launch has been a uniquely turbulent one for The Settlers: New Allies. After an eight-year absence, the next entry in Ubisoft’s beloved city-building series was finally revealed in 2018, only to be delayed indefinitely two years later. The game then reemerged in a fresh new form in 2022, but a less than favourable reception from long-term fans to its closed beta saw the game delayed indefinitely once again.

12 months later, The Settlers: New Allies is all the better for it. An extended delay is never an easy decision to make, yet the team at Ubisoft Düsseldorf (formerly Blue Byte) has seen this additional development time as an opportunity to reach out to those most familiar with the series. “We learned [more] than just what was needed for the game,” creative director Christian Hagerdorn tells me during a recent preview event. “One of our biggest focuses was to be absolutely transparent with the players. Not just on where we were standing, but where we were going. We've been collecting the feedback as we were developing”.
