Three Days In Tokyo With The Creators Of Silent Hill, Siren, And Slitterhead

1 year 2 months ago

I'm two floors below ground, surrounded by screaming drunks and breathing in enough secondhand smoke to take at least a decade off my life. I'm here with Keiichiro Toyama, most well-known for creating the Silent Hill series, but also the creator of the Siren and Gravity Rush series, and most recently, the founder of Bokeh Game Studio, making the upcoming Slitterhead.

A cramped, old, smoky bar in a shopping mall deep beneath a Yokohama train station might not immediately appear conducive to game development, but things are starting to click in my head. Mixed with pounds of nicotine, the air in the bar is communal and light. It's also distinct compared to the more modern, formulaic streets immediately above our heads. In an hour or two, we'll walk a few blocks over and hit the nightlife and drinking alleys. Tucked within the immensely larger Tokyo surrounding them, these areas have their own distinct senses of space, much like the worlds of Toyama's games. He's been living in Yokohama for decades, he tells me. Something like Gravity Rush – with its unforgettable, topsy-turvy, boozy, and somewhat seedy world – makes a lot more sense to me now.

Marvel Snap Finally Lets You Battle Against Friends Today

1 year 2 months ago

Marvel Snap has taken the world by storm, but one glaring omission fans have asked for is the ability to battle friends instead of only random strangers. As previously promised, the wait is over because Marvel Snap’s new Battle Mode allows players to take on their buddies, and it goes live today.

Battle Mode allows players to share battle codes with each other for private one-on-one bouts. This match-up consists of multiple back-to-back games with players using the same decks throughout. Players start with 10 health each and whoever wins a game deals 1 point of damage. However, this damage can be doubled by snapping. A player loses when their health hits zero, and there’s no round limit. Developer Second Dinner states that Battle Mode will receive updates expanding its features over the coming months.

For more on Marvel Snap, check out its spot on our Top 10 Games of 2022 to find out what makes it so special. Be sure to also read editor Charles Harte's opinion on why he wishes more mobile games were like Marvel Snap

1 year 2 months ago

E3 nintendo playstation xbox attendance 2023 convention gaming canceled

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) announced in March that E3 would be returning as an in-person show in Los Angeles following the cancellation of the 2022 edition. Then, in September, the ESA revealed that E3 2023 will take place from Tuesday, June 13, through Friday, June 16

Now, IGN reports it has learned that PlayStation, Xbox, and Sony will be skipping E3 2023, a major blow to what was supposed to be E3's big comeback. The publication also reports that these companies won't have a presence on the Los Angeles Convention Center showfloor, either, which is where game companies typically have large (and flashy) booths where people can preview games and learn more about what's in store.

Disgaea 7 Takes Players To A Feudal Japanese Underworld This Fall

1 year 2 months ago

Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtuless is coming this fall, and this time it's injecting the series’ absurdity with a dose of classical Japanese history.

This latest installment in the wacky strategy series unfolds in the feudal Japan-style demonic realm of Hinomoto. Made up of multiple netherworlds, the underworld residents followed the bushido code of honor until a tyrannical regime took over to promote a code of destruction. A pair of unlikely allies must team up to stop this threat: a lazy samurai named Futo and a hyperactive otaku girl named Pirilika.

Disgaea 7 boasts over 40 character classes, including four new ones: Maiko, Bandit, Zombie Maiden, and Big Eye. It also retains the 3D sprites introduced in Disgaea 6. New mechanics include Jumbofication, which turns characters into super-sized versions of themselves to inflict massive attack damage. Item Reincarnation lets you transform equipment and items into new forms, such as turning a weapon into a healing item. Auto-battles have been improved with deeper character customization. Now, your forces can stand a better chance against other players' troops in the new online ranked battles.

Unlike Disgaea 6, a Switch exclusive at launch, Disgaea 7: Vows of the Virtuless will be available on multiple platforms on day one. You can get the game on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC.

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake Review – Not Quite A Sweet Victory

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake review game informer

Rating: Everyone 10+

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake feels like a game of yesteryear, in both good and bad ways. It’s a nostalgic romp through themed levels that feel more inspired than just another platforming tour through Bikini Bottom. It does a great job highlighting why people that grew up with SpongeBob SquarePants loved the show, and why people still love it today. At its best, the gameplay is decently fun, but at its worst, it’s mindlessly dull. This, coupled with a few bugs, like one that caused music to disappear completely, or the three hard crashes I experienced, keep this sponge’s latest adventure from going beyond anything more than average.

Netflix's live action One Piece series will set sail this year.

The subscription streaming service revealed this news today with a new image and a poster for the upcoming pirate series based on the long-running (and extremely popular) manga and anime series, One Piece. The release year image features Monkey D. Luffy, played by Iñaki Godoy, raising his fist up in the air. You can see Netflix's One Piece logo in the image below as well:

Alongside the image above, Netflix has also released a new poster for the series, which features, from left to right, Taz Skylar's Sanji, Emily Rudd's Nami, Godoy's Luffy, Jacob Gibson's Usopp, and Mackenyu's Roronoa Zoro, standing on a beach in front of the crew's ship, the Going Merry. Check it out below:

While these two images (and the casting) look great, we still haven't seen Netflix's One Piece show in motion so here's hoping we get a trailer sooner than later. One Piece begins sometime this year.

Cat Suit Mario, Donkey Kong Make An Appearance In New Super Mario Bros. Movie Teaser

1 year 2 months ago

The Super Mario Bros. Movie new teaser cat suit donkey kong Seth Rogen Chris Pratt

Nintendo and Illumination have released a new teaser that reveals Mario's famous cat suit as well as more of Seth Rogen's Donkey Kong.

Released during one of yesterday's big NFL games, this teaser is short and sweet, but it features 10 or so seconds of new footage from The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which hits theaters on April 7. In it, we see Donkey Kong begin to pummel Mario, which is a clip we've seen before, before Mario hits a yellow "?" block. This gives him the cat suit powerup and while it's useful in the game, that doesn't appear to be the case here as Rogen's Donkey Kong begins to make fun of the suit and Mario's reliance on it.

Check it out for yourself in The Super Mario Bros. Movie clip below

As you can see, this is the most Donkey Kong dialogue we have heard in a teaser for The Super Mario Bros. Movie yet, and it reveals that Rogen's character is basically just him, complete with his signature laugh, too. This clip is yet another that looks great and we can't wait for this movie to hit theaters in a few months on April 7.

For more, check out this trailer from last year that showcases Anya Taylor-Joy's Princess Peach

Infinite Themes: Dead Space Series

1 year 2 months ago

Look, I’m a sucker for space. Alien is one of my favorite movies, Mars Curiosity landed on my birthday, and Moon Pies are my favorite snack. Space is dope. When I found out there was a third person action horror game being set in space, I was ecstatic. Enter Visceral Game’s Dead SpaceReleased in 2008 on the Xbox 360/PS3/PC, Dead Space has you taking control of Isaac Clarke. Isaac is a man of no words, who is a simple engineer sent on a mission to find out what happened on the USG Ishimura. You see, Isaac has a wife on the Ishimura, one who he has not heard from for a while. As Isaac and his team approach the debris-ridden vessel, in classic horror fashion things immediately start going south. After making an emergency landing, Isaac has no other choice but to explore the ship on his own. Throughout their journey aboard the Ishimura, players slowly start unraveling the mystery of what happened aboard this ship.

Dead Space 2 takes the formula established in DS1, and turns it up to eleven. Not only are the graphics and sound improved, but Isaac is more responsive and quicker too. Dead Space 2 sees Isaac aboard The Sprawl. The Sprawl is basically a city floating in space, which Isaac wakes up upon several years after the events of the Ishimura. What follows is some of the most intense and immersive gameplay experiences that one can partake in this last generation. Here’s why:

Clear the Rest of Your Week, The Greatest Trilogy Ever Is Now on Netflix

1 year 2 months ago

It’s official! The return of the king is happening. Netflix announced through its official Twitter account that The Lord of the Rings trilogy will be back on the streaming platform on Feb. 1.

The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King have been available multiple times in the past on Netflix but, apparently, never at the same time. Currently, we still don’t know whether this comeback will include only the standard editions, or the extended editions as well, as HBO Max does, and there’s also no word on the Hobbit trilogy.

J. R. R. Tolkien’s epic fantasy is back in style, as more people are rewatching LotR or watching it for the first time thanks to Amazon’s The Rings of Power. Regardless of your opinion on the show, Peter Jackson’s original trilogy is undoubtedly a must-watch for fantasy fans and cinema buffs.

Marvel Snap’s Big Update Finally Lets You Battle Friends, & Leader Gets Slapped in the Face

1 year 2 months ago

Second Dinner has just dropped a new major update for Marvel Snap, and it’s definitely an exciting one. This update was teased earlier in the month, as the developers revealed that Battle Mode would arrive in the game on Jan. 31. Well, it’s finally here, and players can now create and join rooms with a code and battle each other with no fear of dropping ranks.

In addition to that, this update also comes with two balance changes. First off, Leader has been changed to a 6-cost, 7-power card, with the effect of copying all cards your opponent played that turn, but only on the location to the right of Leader. This forces you to think a little more strategically about where you should play Leader, while also making the card less frustrating to lose against.

Wolverine also got a surprise buff in Marvel Snap with this patch. He’s still a 2-cost, 2-power card, but each time he gets discarded or destroyed, he’ll show up in a random location with +2 power. This makes him a much more playable card at the very least, and he should start to see more play in both discard and destroy deck archetypes.

Finally, this patch also comes with the first Series downgrade we’ve seen in the game since December. Luke Cage, Absorbing Man, Titania, and She-Hulk have been moved down to Series 3, while Super Skrull, Shuri, Valkyrie, Bast, and Black Panther have moved to Series 4.

Marvel Snap is now available on PC and mobile devices.

It looks like Capcom’s highly anticipated Resident Evil 4 remake is set to make a host of improvements to the original game, including scrapping Quick Time Events and making your rescue mission that much easier.

Promotion of Resident Evil 4 is in full swing and the game is enjoying the spotlight in Game Informer’s latest digital issue. In their respective interview, the game’s developers had plenty to say about what players can expect. Twitter user Shinobi602 highlighted some of the key takeaways and it seems that the latest entry in Capcom’s remake series is set to be a far more faithful adaptation of its original game as opposed to Resident Evil 2 and 3’s modern iterations, with some scenes being shot for shot identical.

Every DCU Movie & TV Show Announced Today

1 year 2 months ago

DC Studios has released a video that showcases co-CEO James Gunn talking about a huge variety of movies and TV shows coming to the DCU in the next few years. Instead of using phases like the MCU does, Gunn and his co-CEO of DC Studios, Peter Safran, are seemingly using Chapters as their labels for the different phases.

DC Studios’ first chapter will start after Aquaman 2 releases December 2023 and is titled Gods and Monsters. Unfortunately for those looking forward to Gunn’s new DC films, there were almost no release dates announced besides his Superman movie, so fans will need to wait to get more information on that.

As it stands, there are ten projects announced for Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, although Gunn has also confirmed that this is not the finalized list, with even more coming during the chapter than have been revealed thus far.

So, without further ado, here are all the projects announced and updated by James Gunn and DC Studios today.

A Sequel to Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey Is Already in the Works

1 year 2 months ago

The public domain is a funny thing. On the one hand, it means a writer’s creations can live on long after they pass, allowing fans to take those characters on new adventures. However, there are also no limits, meaning the trend of children’s stories turning into horror films will continue. The creators of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey are banking on the film being such a success that they have already announced a sequel.

The film still has yet to be unleashed onto theaters, as it’s currently set for a wide release on Feb. 15. The creators aren’t waiting for those box office tallies, though, and put out a tweet already looking ahead towards the film’s franchise potential.

A Sequel to The Most Beautiful War Story in Gaming Is Now Available on Netflix

1 year 2 months ago

To kick off 2023, Ubisoft has just announced that Valiant Hearts: Coming Home, a mobile sequel to 2014’s Valiant Hearts: The Great War, is available now on Netflix gaming.

The original title was an award darling in 2014 thanks in no small part to its emotional, war-based storytelling, and this sequel is sure to be no different. Set in World War I, Valiant Hearts: Coming Home will center around four heroes and the way they grow from and cope with the struggles of the war together.

While playing, you’ll also get to learn about the history of World War I, adding another dimension to the game’s detailed and heart-wrenching writing. Netflix has certainly been aggressive with its approach to making Netflix Games an important home for mobile games.

We’ve seen notable titles like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge and Twelve Minutes land on the service, and this new release continues to showcase Netflix’s demand for a large and diverse mobile game lineup.

Ubisoft is clearly all in on Netflix Games’ approach, as this is just one of three mobile titles Ubisoft has planned for the service. This includes a new entry in The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot series and an upcoming Assassin’s Creed title. This is absolutely a bullish approach for the publisher, which has seen some financial turmoil in the past year, but the arrival of major Ubisoft franchises could be an enticing proposition that makes Netflix Games even more worthwhile.

Rupert Grint: Everyone Expected Harry Potter Childstars to “Go off the Rails”

1 year 2 months ago

Rupert Grint has spoken about the popularly held belief that he and the other Harry Potter child stars would “go off the rails,” as well as the media’s obsession with contrasting their respective careers.

Speaking to Bustle, the actor confessed that starring in Harry Potter was, at times, “suffocating” and “an out-of-body experience”, but that he has always tried to stay away from being a stereotype.

“I’ve always felt there was this expectation for us to go off the rails, follow the child star stereotype,” Grint says. “That’s always been something to fight against.”

To that end, instead of going further into the spotlight, Grint decided to pause his acting career so he could reflect on his experiences as a young actor in the spotlight.

Since Ron Weasley appeared in his life during his formative years, both actor and character ended up merging their personalities, and still to this day he answers to the name Ron. Moreover, even though he didn’t think enough time had passed for a Harry Potter reunion, he gladly participated in HBO Max’s Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts television special and met his co-stars, individuals whom he cherishes.

More recently, after a creative journey through theater, comedy, and indie films, the Potter star became a father and starred in the Apple TV+ thriller Servant; an episode of Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, and in the 2023 movie Knock at the Cabin.

Knock at the Cabin, in particular, is an exciting horror movie that hits cinemas on Feb. 3 and is his first feature film since Moonwalkers in 2015. Grint spoke on acting in the thriller a bit below:

Destiny 2 Players Aren’t Happy With the Competitive Division

1 year 2 months ago

During Season of the Seraph in Destiny 2, a Competitive PvP revamp was introduced for players to partake in. If you played enough, you would earn the famous Legendary Hand Cannon, Rose, as a reward. However, Destiny 2 players are unhappy with everything else regarding the Competitive Division. A recent Reddit post showcases a number of Guardians expressing their displeasure with the playlist.

Unfortunately, this statement is absolutely correct. Outside of earning the Rose Hand Cannon, which you only need to play a couple of matches for, there is no other loot to be earned from the Competitive Division. Even worse, when you hit the highest rank, Ascendant 1, you don’t earn anything as a reward for your hard work. No emblem, shader, ornament, nothing.

Donald Glover’s Next Show Is a Dark, Beyonce-Inspired Sister Series to Atlanta

1 year 2 months ago

After Atlanta ended, most people were wondering what Donald Glover would create next, and there’s finally an answer: Swarm.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Glover, and co-creator Janine Nabers discuss the new TV series, and how it’ll be the sister series to Atlanta. Swarm will star Dominique Fishback (Judas and the Black Messiah) as Dre, a young woman obsessed with a fictional pop star (who is very similar to Beyoncé), and how her fandom takes her to dark, unexpected places.

About the reference points for the show, Glover told Vanity Fair:

“We just thought it’d be fun to make a post-truth Piano Teacher mixed with The King of Comedy,” he said. “We were really interested in creating an antihero story, through the lens of a Black, modern-day woman.”

Swarm’s pilot was shot on film, features incredibly long takes, and has several narratively risky moments, that require a committed actor who can deliver all those different tones and in shooting the pilot, Fishback delivered. If the acting and writing weren’t exciting enough, Nabers also noted the crew was full of Atlanta alums, and that’s why the show feels like “A sister to Atlanta and in the same tonal space.”

Although the show still doesn’t have a release date, is being run by Nabers, and stars Dominique Fishback, Chloe Bailey (Grown-ish), and Damson Idris (Snowfall) and will be released on Amazon Prime Video.

A $500,000 Game Has Trolled Steam’s Highest Price Record

1 year 2 months ago

Steam is one of PC’s biggest storefronts, as thousands of users log in every day looking to play a variety of titles or to get the best deals on today’s latest hits. The storefront also does a lot for its community, as it allows up-and-coming talent to showcase their titles, with some very promising content hitting Steam.

That said, Steam has also been the subject of exploits and bugs regarding the process of publishing titles, and it’s never been clearer than Laptop gaming’s MEGAJUMP. The developer for this title has managed to price his game at an absurd $502,634.46 after a random exploit allowed him to do this.

The developer’s statement is found front and center of his game’s page, as he says:

“THEY WONT LET ME CHANGE PRICE FOR 30 DAYS.
DON’T BUY FOR 500K, I wanted to test the limits of steam pricing.”

The issue in question is that when a developer submits a title to be sold on Steam, it enters a process of “Price Request,” and as the name implies, is the period where a developer defines how much the title will retail for. However, during this developer’s experience, he encountered an exploit that allowed him to change the price, which he certainly did.

This incident comes on the heels of a Steam game that previously held the crown for the most expensive title on the storefront, retailing for $2000, and unfortunately turned out to be quite a disappointment. However, the good news for Laptop gaming and fans of what the title holds, the reviews are positive for the 3D platforming adventure.
