FFVII Cloud Was Supposed to Be a Berserker

1 year 3 months ago

FFVII Cloud

Perhaps the original "one-winged angel" was Cloud Strife all along. The team behind the Final Fantasy VII Remake dropped a bit of trivia about the game's protagonist in a post. It turns out that in the earliest stages development for FFVII, Cloud was quite a different sort of character.

https://twitter.com/FFVIIR_CLOUD/status/1621070921954902016

According to the post, early concepts for the protagonist of FFVII characterized Cloud (or rather, the character that would eventually be Cloud Strife) as a "Berserker.” An uncontrollable warrior, this berserker version of Cloud would have their left arm "sealed away" by his bracelet. The story doesn't specify if Cloud would be prevented from even using his left hand, but he would fight exclusively using his sword in his right hand. The sword itself would be held on his back by a powerful magnet. Then, when at some point the bracelet seal was broken, this berserker Cloud would power up, finally able to fight with the strength in both arms.

Knockout City Servers to Shut Down this Summer

1 year 3 months ago

Released back in May of 2021, Knockout City is an action game that allowed players to beat each other up in an epic, high-octane game of fast-paced dodgeball. There were tons of levels and different kinds of balls and weapons to check out, making this one of the more unique multiplayer games we’d seen in recent years.

Just today, developer Velan Studios announced that Season 9 would be Knockout City’s final season, and that service would end on June 6. However, the developers will be releasing a private server version of the game on PC, where players can still enjoy the game via custom games with friends. So while the hosted servers are shutting down, you’ll still be able to play it within your own circles.

Knockout City is Shutting Down

1 year 3 months ago

Free-to-play, team-based dodgeball game Knockout City is about to be, well, knocked out. According to an official post today, it's shutting down in June.

In the full blog post, developer and publisher Velan Studios says that Season 9 will be the final season for Knockout City, with the game shutting down on June 9, 2023 — over two years after launch. This means that all servers will shut down and Knockout City won't be playable at all.

Beginning February 28 (the same day that Season 9 starts), all real-money transactions will be removed. However, Velan reassures that Season 9 will include copious rewards in the form of XP, style chips, and the currency holobux. Additionally, "almost every cosmetic we've ever sold" will end up in one of the upcoming event sale shops, and rewards for login bonuses, league play, and other elements will be increased.

A final, two-week-long event on May 23 will conclude Knockout City's run with triple XP, "massive rewards," and a community-favorite playlist.

Hi-Fi Rush Review

1 year 3 months ago

The last thing I expected from developer Tango Gameworks was a vibrant, fun-loving action game with the heart of a cartoon I would’ve absolutely loved. The studio’s primarily known for the dark and creepy likes of The Evil Within or Ghostwire: Tokyo, but Hi-Fi Rush is instead filled with a joyous, youthful personality seen in its stunning animation, art style, and characters. And while the surprising change of pace is already refreshing, Tango’s greatest accomplishment is how it expertly executes on the singular concept that permeates Hi-Fi Rush’s design — that rhythm is everything.

Right from the jump, Hi-Fi Rush establishes its reverence for modern garage and alt-rock, kicking things off by using The Black Keys’ “Lonely Boy” to introduce the cheesy but endearing protagonist Chai and the colorful, high-tech industrialized world he lives in. Labeled a “defect” by robotics megacorp Vandelay Industries after a surgical mishap leaves him with an iPod stuck in his chest, Chai can see and feel the pulse of his music coursing through the world around him. From that point on, nearly everything is impressively tied to the rhythm of Hi-Fi Rush’s soundtrack as this boyish goofball bashes Vandelay robots with a makeshift sword in the shape of a Gibson Flying V.

Love Live! School Idol Festival 2 Miracle Live

Love Live! School Idol Festival is dead, long live Love Live! School Idol Festival 2. Shortly after breaking hearts by announcing the end of service for the original Love Live game, developer KLab  and publisher Bushiroad confirmed its sequel. Formally titled Love Live! School Idol Festival 2 Miracle Live!, the game will launch for iOS and Android devices in Spring 2023.

https://twitter.com/lovelive_SIF/status/1621121696299372544

Though the game is called a sequel, Love Live! School Idol Festival 2 has much in common with its predecessor. The rhythm gameplay will be basically the same, but have visual upgrades to things like skill cut-in visibility. The game will also host every song in the Love Live! series to date, including songs from units like μ's, Nijigasaki High School Idol Club, A-RISE, Liella!, Sunny Passion, Saints Snow, and more. Bushiroad said that over 500 songs will eventually be included in the selection. Idol groups will have short movies that depict the characters' daily lives, and story-based content will allow players to interact with the idols in private and group chat settings. As before, event stories will also add new adventures and encounters for the girls.

Netflix’s New Anime Sparks Controversy For Using AI-Generated Artwork & Backgrounds

1 year 3 months ago

Titled The Dog and the Boy, Netflix’s new animated short film was made by WIT Studio, and the Netflix Japan Twitter account recently tweeted out that the art and background used in the film were AI-generated. It didn’t take long for the backlash to start, especially when you consider that image generation AI has been a huge source of controversy as it’s generally regarded as unethical among animators and artists.

The tweet in question states: “As an experimental effort to help the anime industry, which has a labor shortage, we used image generation technology for the background images of all three-minute video cuts!”

The irony here is that the animation industry has long been plagued with issues like low pay, high stress, long working hours, combined with high demand, resulting in lots of burnout among artists. The tweet from Netflix Japan comes off as a little tone-deaf as a result, as the issue isn’t necessarily the labor shortage itself, as it is the subpar working conditions in general.

Daytona USA was one of the miracles of the XBLA era, so grab it while you can

1 year 3 months ago

Sometimes you really don't know how good you've got it. Just over a decade ago Sega dropped a batch of Model 2 ports on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, providing impeccably presented emulations of some of the games that carved its reputation in 90s arcades. Virtua Fighter 2, Cyber Troopers Virtual-On and Sonic the Fighters all received near-immaculate re-releases, but the best of the lot was the first to arrive: Daytona USA, AM2's almighty racer which, back in 2011, got a port that had no right being as good as it was. It's about to be delisted from Microsoft's marketplace, so I'd strongly suggest you grab it while you can.

What makes it so special? First off it's worth acknowledging the impact of the 1994 original - or at the very least the impact it had on me and millions of other impressionable young players. 3D games weren't anything particularly new or novel - I remember my first glimpse of Virtua Fighter, running on Sega's Model 1 board, in the dark corner of a bowling alley - but the texture-mapping introduced by the Model 2 felt like a bigger step forward still. Somehow I was lucky enough to find myself at London's Trocadero when it made its debut here in the UK, a large crowd gathered around as we all patiently waited to take our turn behind the wheel. It felt like a glimpse of the future.

There's more to Daytona USA than technical prowess, though, and it stands out as an icon of Sega's legendary 90s output. It's not quite as groundbreaking as Virtua Racing, and I don't think it plays quite as well as Sega Rally Championship, but Daytona USA has a special charm all of its own. It's the arcade racer as a rhythmic experience, something its designer Toshihiro Nagoshi would expand upon in his Edge column nearly a decade after the game's original release.

Is The Last of Us the best video game adaptation ever?

1 year 3 months ago

Hello and welcome to the Eurogamer Newscast, which this week is all about the best (and worst) video game adaptations. We've all been watching The Last of Us which has become a properly massive TV event - but it's not the first great video game adaptation by any means.

Is it the best? It's certainly up there - though there's strong competition already from things like Netflix's Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and The Witcher series, and the wonderful League of Legends animation Arcane. Beyond those? We have some personal favourites - you'll have to listen to find out which.

Joining me to pick out our highlights and lowlights are Ed Nightingale and Victoria Kennedy, and yes, the Chris Barrie-starring Angelina Joie Tomb Raider film does indeed get a mention.

What we've been playing

1 year 3 months ago

Hello! Welcome back to our regular feature where we write a little bit about some of the games we've found ourselves playing over the last few days. This time: Hockey, Wonderland and colouring books.

If you fancy catching up on some of the older editions of What We've Been Playing, here's our archive.

I wasn't expecting an actual hockey game! As in, one you can full-on real-time play. I haven't played one of those since the 90s, back when playing them felt like sliding around on Marmite - like playing the early FIFA games, actually.

How to Unlock Horse Breeding at the Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On Farm

How to Unlock Horse Breeding at the Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On Farm

Pocket Card Jockey is back again, thank goodness. Even though the impending 3DS eShop shutdown means one version could be lost, Game Freak's solitaire and horse racing mashup lives on via Apple Arcade. The fact that there are simulation elements in there might throw people off, though. Especially if you aren't sure how to start raising your own horses. Fortunately, unlocking the farm and getting to breed horses in Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On is easy and not dissimilar to the original 3DS release.

How to Unlock Horse Breeding at the Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On Farm

How to Unlock the Farm and Breed Horses in Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On

Okay. So just getting the farm isn't too difficult. Once your horse becomes a full grown adult at five years old, it will retire. You'll then be able to access it and pair it up at the farm. So playing through solitaire matches and racing in Pocket Card Jockey will probably unlock that in between one and two hours.

Roller Drama is secretly a brilliant houseshare simulator

1 year 3 months ago

Hello! I've been playing Roller Drama over the last week or so. It's not a long game, I gather, but I'm taking it slow, because it feels, in its own way, like it's a whole world I am being dunked in, and I want to make the most of it, and to live it as fully as I can.

It's a wonderfully strange thing. In Roller Drama you play as a coach to a roller derby team. You play the matches - which are brilliant and tactical and exhausting, and I have yet to finish one without someone on the team dropping on the track out of sheer knackerdness - and in between you knock around the house you all live in together, solving surreal little puzzles and talking to a ghost who looks a bit like Shakespeare. There's a cat involved too, who, physics fans will be glad to hear, may or may not be dead. It's hard to tell.

It's rare for a game with this many pieces to fully click, I think. But Roller Drama is clicking for me. And that's because I like the hectic, thoughtful spin on a sport I can barely comprehend, and also because this game, I think, is secretly something very coherent and very welcome. It's secretly an absolutely stellar houseshare simulation.

Now, Legendary Entertainment has claimed its sequel is still "in active development" when questioned on its status by Polygon. What this exactly means is unclear.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s 4.01 patch improves ray tracing, but tanks non-RT performance

1 year 3 months ago

While the patch notes for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s 4.01 update claim it "improves the overall stability and performance of the game", if you’re not using the recently added ray tracing settings, it might well do the opposite. I gave the patch a whirl to try out its PC-specific changes – namely a new 'Performance' setting for RT global illumination and a fix for the broken screen space reflections setting – only to find that non-ray-traced, DirectX 12 performance has been utterly knackered. Again.

This rhythm action game about a cute onion wearing a tracksuit is brutal

1 year 3 months ago

I tend to find that a lot of rhythm games hold back from going completely beast mode. It definitely comes from a place of accessibility, where an onslaught of timed bars and coloured symbols can be intimidating for casual players. But what about the rest of us who want to be pummelled to death in time with a catchy beat?

Good news! TinyBuild's new action-adventure game Rhythm Sprout: Sick Beats & Bad Sweets does not hold back. I'm not even halfway through the game and I’ve had my butt completely kicked by its barrage of oncoming beats, and all in perfect time to its soda-pop EDM.

Interview: Vanillaware Talks GrimGrimoire, 13 Sentinels, Future Games

1 year 3 months ago

Over the years, a number of Vanillaware games came back again. Odin Sphere. Princess Crown. Muramasa: The Demon Blade. Dragon's Crown. Now people are poised to yet again return to the world and characters of GrimGrimgoire with the OnceMore remaster. To help learn more about the game, as well as its influence on 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim and possible upcoming projects, Siliconera spoke with Vanillaware President and Producer George Kamitani, Director Yoshio Nishimura, and Programmer Teruhisa Kanayama. Kamitami served as director on the original game and producer on OnceMore. Meanwhile, Nishimura served as a UI/background designer on the PS2 game.

Jenni Lada: Did you face any challenges in remastering the GrimGrimoire character designs?

Yoshio Nishimura: Since we’d originally drawn each illustration in high resolution already, we honestly did not run into much difficulty renewing the design.

However, since the game is 15 years old, some data had already been lost, and it took some additional work to correct certain anomalies in the animations and to change the screen ratio from 4:3 to 16:9, but with a bit of time, we were able to get it done.

What GrimGrimoire OnceMore addition do you feel is the most extensive, and how difficult was it to implement into the game?

Teruhisa Kanayama: The skill tree. The power-up elements in the PlayStation 2 version used to be tied to story progression, but this time they can be obtained from the players’ abilities of choice.

Knockout City shutdown June 6 final season 9 new game velan

Velan Studios has announced that it is shutting down its dodgeball multiplayer game, Knockout City, in June.

The studio announced in February of last year that Knockout City was going free-to-play and saying goodbye to Electronic Arts, who originally published the game as an EA Originals title, to self-publish the game's future content. More specifically, Knockout City will be shutdown on June 6.

Though we do not yet know her role, we do know that Fanning will appear as a character in Death Stranding 2.

The tweet also includes the numbers for the episodes with Shioli Kutsuna, N.W. Refn, and Norman Reedus. Episode 23 will be the next one, but we do not yet know who he will invite. All we know is that it will be someone who worked on or is working on the game. Shioli Kutsuna, like Fanning, will play a Death Stranding 2 character. Resident Evil Village Gold Edition Survey Gives People Wallpapers

1 year 3 months ago

Resident Evil Village Gold Edition Survey Gives People a Wallpaper

Capcom announced a survey for Resident Evil Village Gold Edition and the Winters’ Expansion. The goal is to get people’s thoughts on the game and add-on that starred Rose and added a third-person mode to the main game. Everyone who takes it gets a Resident Evil Village-themed wallpaper. People can take it at the official site.

While this survey is for people who bought the Gold Edition or DLC, there are options for people who select options that only mention the original game or none of the above. However, if you do note that you bought the latest addition or add-on, it asks what people did, what platform they played it on, and other details. So it asks if someone used first-person or third-person mode in the main game, went through Shadows of Rose, or used the extra Mercenaries content. It also asks if people were aware of the demo. It then adds additional questions about the new features based on people’s responses and asks for feedback. Some questions also ask if people were okay with the DLC being digital-only or how they felt about Re:Verse being free with it.

There are also general gaming questions. For example, Capcom asks which genres the survey taker plays most. It also asks for thoughts on DLC and what kinds people like to see. Another question specifically asks about desired Resident Evil series DLC.

The Last of Us Part I PC Slightly Delayed to Make Sure It “Lives Up to Standards”

1 year 3 months ago

Naughty Dog has just revealed that it will be delaying The Last of Us Part I PC port to ensure that it is up to the high standards that it has set and that fans expect from the series. The news came by way of a tweet earlier today, which fully detailed the slight delay and the reasoning.

When Does The Last of Us Part I Come Out on PC

While it was originally set to hit PC on March 3, 2023, The Last of Us Part I PC has been pushed back until March 28, 2023. According to the team, these few weeks will allow them to polish up certain parts of the game to avoid any bugs or errors upon release.

Over the past few years, PC releases have become more prominent for PlayStation-exclusive titles, and it seems that Sony has put a heavy emphasis on releasing the best port possible for these games, as seen with titles like Death Stranding and Uncharted.

Bella Ramsey Has Seen a The Last of Us Part II Edit & Gives Her Take on Playing the Role

1 year 3 months ago

HBO’s The Last of Us series is being hailed as one of the best video game adaptations ever, but there are lots of stories still left to tell, and as most will know it’s headed in a pretty grim direction. But despite everything that’s in store for Elli, Bella Ramsey isn’t worried. On the contrary, she’s pumped to explore the character’s evolution and one relationship in particular.

Looking ahead into the future, Bella Ramsey told Josh Horowitz on his Happy Sad Confused podcast:

“I’m really excited for the Ellie & Dina story. I’ve watched an edit someone has put together. I’m excited to play that out.”

Although audiences are just watching the beginning of Ellie’s story, the actress is already thinking ahead, as the character of Dina doesn’t appear until The Last of Us Part II, meaning fans won’t meet Dina until the show’s season two. Both games have many unique characters TV audiences still have to meet and see their real-life actors play, people like Abby, Dina, or Jesse. If the writers do have as good a job as they did with Tess or Frank, fans will be very happy. You can check out the full podcast episode below.

These Cancelled Titanfall Sequel Details Will Ruin Your Friday

1 year 3 months ago

While the battle royale craze continues to fight for dominance, it appears that one of the major players in the genre has been hit with a bit of a losing streak. Case in point: EA and Respawn Entertainment recently announced that their popular battle royale Apex Legends underperformed last quarter and failed to meet internal expectations. Adding insult to injury, Apex Legends Mobile was canceled after only one year after its initial launch, and a secret single-player Titanfall game was shelved before it could even see the light of day.

In short, it’s not the best time to be a fan of Respawn’s kinetic first-person shooter series. But what makes things even worse is that we now have, thanks to Giant Bomb alum Jeff Grubb, a handful of deets all about this unrevealed shoot-’em-up. Grab your tissues, folks, and get ready to press X to pay respects.

So, firstly, the canceled Titanfall game was purportedly going to be a mash-up of Titanfall and Apex Legends. Ostensibly, it would’ve been a single-player campaign integrated into the Apex Legends formula in a seemingly seamless way. Furthermore, everyone’s favorite Vanguard-class titan BT-7274 was going to show up, along with a handful of other renowned characters in the beloved sci-fi shooter series.

Isaac Clarke Needs to Contact His Union Rep in Dead Space Remake

1 year 3 months ago

At its core, the point of a gaming experience is for you to complete tasks or challenges for your enjoyment. Predominantly, this will see you take the role of the protagonist, bearing the lion’s share of the workload; such is true for Leon Kennedy’s solo extraction mission in rural Spain, as it is in Choo-Choo Charles, where you fight an evil train with your regular train before it can make train babies. Horror games are kind of weird, I will admit.

The consistent factor behind the above examples is that this is clearly your objective to complete. You may interact with other people along the way, either remotely or directly, but the understanding is that it’s all up to you, hero. Sagacious as you are, even you get lonely here sometimes.

When Dead Space first premiered in 2008, it surrounded the main character, Isaac Clarke, with crewmembers that included his commanding officer and a computer specialist. As with any team, this gives the impression that everyone has their own skillset, and their own burdens to bear on this dangerous rescue assignment.

1 year 3 months ago

Legendary game designer Jeff Minter's psychedelic reimagining of Atari's '80s arcade prototype Akka Arrh comes to PC and consoles on 21st February.

The original Akka Arrh was created by Atari's Mike Hally and Dave Ralston in 1982, but the unfinished prototype never went into full production and only three cabinets are still said to exist. More recently, however, the prototype did get an airing in last year's superb Atari 50: Anniversary Celebration collection.

Minter's reimagining of Akka Arrh will take the core of the original and build it out into "a cascade of words, colour, shapes and sound [flowing] around your turret as you desperately fight off swarms of inbound attackers".
