1 year 4 months ago

From Madness With Love

At the Winter 2022 Indie Live Expo publisher Playism announced that it'll release a new otome game from developer Jamsanpoid. Titled From Madness With Love, the game's set for release in the Spring of 2023.

Check out the announcement trailer for From Madness With Love below. English subtitles are available in the closed captions.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfQtnGiUaXg

The player is a second-year high school student, who just transferred to a wealthy Japanese private school, Kokain Private Academy. There they'll meet four available guys: Classmate Yusuke Saeki, teacher Shuji Arakawa, student council president Aorta, fellow student Tamura Marshmallow.

Each guy has his own quirks to emphasize the main conceit of From Madness With Love, which is getting to know guys "you'll never be on the same page with." Each romantic interest has some hangup that prevents straightforward communication. Yusuke speaks in incomprehensible gibberish. Shuji speaks like he's been badly translated. Tamura prefers to communicate in profanities and verbal abuse. Aorta's foreign language is impossible to understand or decipher.

Players will need to get around these roadblocks on the path to love, and help determine the story of From Madness With Love through their choices. Seasonal events, club activities, festivals, and occasions like the New Year and Valentine's Day will provide opportunities to meet with each character and deepen their bonds.

Kynseed review: a promising RPG, but not all its promises are fulfilled

1 year 4 months ago

Playing Kynseed is kind of like being allowed too much freedom at the pick-n-mix. It’s not that all the separate parts go badly together, having chocolate jazzies and cola bottles all jumbled in together is exactly what I want. The problem is that it can’t possibly live up to what you hoped for when you’re scooping treats into that weighty paper bag. There’s a surprise chalkiness in the chocolates, some of the gummies are glued together, and in your haste, you’ve nabbed two lookalike sweets and mismanaged your expectations. At a glance, it’s precisely the rainbow-coloured jumble you wanted, but often it just leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

Kynseed is an RPG, and a life sim, and a sandbox. It is also Cooking Mama, and Moonlighter, and a dungeon crawler. It is gentle vibes ASMR relax-and-watch-the-seasons-change, and also crass and knowingly subversive. It does some of these things excellently, while other parts just don’t hold up.

Cyberpunk 2077 Is Getting a Game of the Year Edition

1 year 4 months ago

CD Projekt Red has revealed that Cyberpunk 2077 will receive a Game of the Year edition once its Phantom Liberty expansion is released in 2023.

As reported by Polish website Stockwatch (and spotted by Insider Gaming), CD Projekt Red president and joint-CEO Adam Kiciński said during a recent investors conference that Cyberpunk 2077 will follow in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt's footsteps and receive the new edition that includes all previously released DLC in one package.

"It's the natural order of things," he said. "It was the same with the Witcher, which, after both expansions, was finally released as a Game of the Year edition and has been on the market that way every since. The same can be expected in this case."

The Phantom Liberty DLC - Cyberpunk 2077's one and only paid expansion that will include hours of new story content - is expected to launch sometime in 2023, and Kiciński said the Game of the Year edition will be released soon after.

Given this expansion is only being released for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC, it's likely the Game of the Year edition will also only be on these platforms.

Dwarf Fortress Review – Old Game, New Face

1 year 4 months ago

Dwarf Fortress on PC

Dwarf Fortress is an intimidating game. It is a venerable grandfather of an entire genre. Rimworld and many other deep colonist survival sim games owe much of their DNA to this 2002 game. Minecraft holds Dwarf Fortress as an influence. This game was in the Museum of Modern Art for a time as a part of gaming history. It’s also intimidating to play, as its ASCII graphics and hard-to-learn hard-to-master gameplay give even the most hardcore management game enthusiast pause. Now a paid version of the game is releasing on steam with a new updated graphics tileset in an attempt to make the game more accessible.

Like many grandfathers, Dwarf Fortress is stern and serious on the surface. You won’t be learning to master psionic powers or turn your colonists into vampires like with your cool aunt Rimworld. Instead, you will be carefully catering to your dwarves’ evolving needs as your colony increases in size. You’ll be managing storage, logistics, trade, and the demands of your dwarven aristocracy. You’ll have to make sure your fortress is well-fed, supplied with beer, and able to trade with outsiders to fill any potential supply shortfalls. Then you can explore the robust systems of crafting that exist in the game, from paper production so you can make your own libraries to the intricate system for making clothes and other farm products.

There is a steep learning curve that will occasionally require outside guides and wikis to fully get over. So steep a learning curve that I am almost afraid to put up screenshots of my game for fear that someone experienced may point out something I did horribly wrong and I may die of embarrassment.

10 Cozy Netflix Shows to Binge This Winter

1 year 4 months ago

I like cozy, stress-free comfort TV to soothe my wired nervous system when the weather gets dark and the holiday season gets stressful. These 10 cozy Netflix shows are all about people being nice to each other and experiencing lots of joy, the perfect antidote to uncomfortable family gatherings and seasonal sadness.

Down to Earth with Zac Efron

In this docuseries, actor Zac Efron and author Darin Olien explore different parts of the world, seeking lessons on how to live a more sustainable life. That may sound kind of heavy, but it’s actually a really hopeful and inspiring look at how we can live more harmoniously with the people and nature around us.

Zac and Darin learn how Paris provides free still and sparkling water to every single person in the city, how the people of Sardinia are living well past 100 years old, and how the wisdom of Indigenous people around the world can help us slow and even reverse the climate crisis.

Meanwhile, Zac and Darin soak up as much knowledge as they can with curiosity, humility, and respect for the people and the cultures who take the time to educate them. If holiday family gatherings have you feeling a little pessimistic about the future of our world, watch Down to Earth for a healthy dose of optimism.

Pokemon Scarlet & Violet Review – Best Believe It’s Still Bejeweled

1 year 4 months ago

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet on Switch

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet offer some of the best, most fun experiences I’ve had in the series. Unfortunately, there are also several aspects of the game that take a step backward from previous entries. It has plenty of strengths that make it worth playing, but its shortcomings hold it back from reaching excellence.

This ninth generation of Pokemon takes place in Paldea, the first completely open-world region. Other Pokemon titles on the Nintendo Switch have taken bite-sized attempts at an open world (Sword and Shield’s Wild Area and Legends Arceus’s open biomes), but this is the first time you can travel in any direction for the entire game and choose which challenges to take on in whatever order you wish.

5 1997 Films That Still Have a Massive Influence on Hollywood 25 Years Later

25 years ago, it was a great time to go to the movies. There were all kinds of genres, and styles on the big screen: from My Best Friend’s Wedding to The Game, The Full Monty, Men in Black or Con Air, and that’s just scratching the surface.

1997 was also when five movie releases changed Hollywood forever; five movies that still have a massive influence on Hollywood 25 years later.

Dragon Quest Treasures Could Prove to Be a Hidden Gem of a Spin-off (Hands-on Preview)

1 year 4 months ago

The Dragon Quest series has always been one that lends itself perfectly to spin-offs and offshoot titles. Host to decades’ worth of iconic monster designs, lovable characters, and imaginative fantasy worlds, there’s no shortage of material for developers to work with. This made the announcement of Dragon Quest Treasures, a prequel spin-off of Dragon Quest XI, set up for at least a certain level of success among fans.

And yet, after playing through the first few hours of the title, I’m pleasantly surprised to report that the game is even more than that. Instead of opting for a by-the-books spin-off experience, Dragon Quest Treasures explores some new gameplay elements which could open up a slew of new gameplay options for the series.

Most of this is thanks to the game’s setup. Taking place before the events of Dragon Quest XI, the story focuses on Erik and his sister Mia; both of which dream of setting out on an adventure to obtain heaps of treasure. After freeing a flying cat and pig from the Viking ship they’re kept on, the two follow these strange animals to a hidden temple. Once there, they discover two daggers, and taking them transports the siblings to the far-off island of Draconia.

It’s here that they get the chance to live out their treasure-chasing dreams, as the island is host to a near-infinite amount of treasure to uncover due to some sort of magical influence. Some are more valuable than others, and it isn’t long before the siblings are drawn into a conflict between two groups of treasure hunters out to obtain seven particularly powerful treasures.

New Characters Wanderer and Faruzan Shine in Genshin Impact’s New Trailers

1 year 4 months ago

Genshin Impact developer HoYoverse released not one, but two trailers of its super-popular action RPG focusing on the characters coming with update 3.3.

We get to take another look at Wanderer following yesterday’s teaser, providing a glimpse of his abilities before the full gameplay trailer that is likely to come on Dec. 7 when the update launches. We see him fight against his former Fatui allies, as players know him as Fatui harbinger Scaramouche before he switched sides.

The second trailer is the same but applied to the other new character, Faruzan, who has been researching machinery for a hundred years (yes, you likely wouldn’t be able to know by just looking at her).

We also get the reveal of Faruzan’s voice actresses. She’s voiced by Chandni Parekh in English and the popular Yui Horie in Japanese. If you’re not familiar with her, she voices Hitomi in the Dead or Alive series, Chie Satonaka in Persona 4 and its spinoffs, and many more roles.

As a reminder, Wanderer is voiced by Patrick Pedraza in English and Tetsuya Kakihara in Japanese. You may know him as Natsu Dragneel in Fairy Tail, Lloyd Bannings in the Trails series, Prompto in Final Fantasy XV, and many more roles.

Swordship review - this game is a marvel

1 year 4 months ago

Do you like fonts? If you like fonts, you must play Swordship. (After Pentiment.) Swordship gets fonts. It loves fonts. And it's not just the fonts themselves, but what the game does with them. Finish a level and "LINE CLEAR" is laid out on the ocean. Finish sorting your earnings and "SHIPPED" is splashed across the screen. This is a game where the fonts make things beautiful. It's even a pleasure to die, because "GAME OVER" is arranged so artfully.

Beyond the fonts, Swordship is still rather excellent. This is pure arcade brilliance, actually, a fast-paced avoid-'em-up with a maritime larceny twist. Your Swordship is a dinky yellow mischief-maker, a needle-thin arrowhead of a craft that can open its tiny jaws to grab containers lost to the ocean, and then pinch them. It can't shoot, not really anyway, but it can trick nearby enemies into killing each other. Collect containers, get the enemies to kill each other, all within the narrow confines of a single top-down screen, which is given a bit of zip by the fact that everything on the screen is actually racing over the surface of endless waves. That's Swordship's whole deal. But as with the fonts, it's not the rules of the game so much as what the game does with the rules.

Okay, so collecting containers. You're racing along, moving left and right and up and down and a container is approaching. You know this because a bright yellow line appears on the screen - a shipping lane. Get into that and collect the container! Zing! I don't think there is actually a greater feeling in any game I've played this year. Pure connection. So now, you have a container in your mouth. You can use it as a bomb to wipe the screen of enemies, or you can bank it, which means waiting until a drop-off point appears on screen and hovering there for a few seconds.

Need for Speed Unbound tech review - profound improvements, bold artistic touches

1 year 4 months ago

After spending most of the last decade as a Battlefront and Battlefield support studio, Criterion Games is back with a full-fledged arcade racing adventure. Need for Speed Unbound is a boldly stylised open-world racer, with graffiti-inspired particle effects and cel-shaded character models. Criterion Games' last full titles were the much-loved Hot Pursuit and Most Wanted, so is Unbound a worthy sequel - and are the new visual effects an impressive addition or unwelcome distraction? Plus, how does the game hold up on PS5, Series X and Series?

Let's get the basics out of the way first - resolution and performance. Series X and PS5 both target 4K while Series S opts for 1440p, but dynamic resolution scaling (DRS) attempts to keep a locked 60fps by dropping internal resolution in heavier moments. I counted as low as 1800p on PS5 and 2016p on Series X, but in general play PS5 is around 1944p and Series X is at full 4K (2160p). Meanwhile, Series S can be as low as 1080p, averaging 1296p, so you get a noticeably softer image than the 4K-like results on the premium consoles.

In terms of performance, the situation reverses. PS5 is more-or-less locked to 60fps, but Series X and Series S see one-off frame-rates drops fairly commonly and more occasional drops to 51-57fps during intense races. Given the higher average resolution on Series X, it's possible that the DRS could be tweaked to ease GPU load and iron out these heavier drops - and if there are other underlying issues they ought to be solved. Right now though, PS5 offers the best overall experience for NFS Unbound.

Massive Crisis Core: FFVII Reunion Ad Connects Cloud and Zack

1 year 4 months ago

Crisis Core: Reunion ad

Crisis Core: FFVII Reunion is just over a week from its December 13, 2022 launch date, and Square Enix debuted a huge new Zack and Cloud ad in Japan's Shinjuku Station to push the game. The ad is unique in this case because of its gimmick. It shows a different image depending on which direction a viewer is coming from. [Thanks, Game Watch!]

Taking up the entire wall of the Shinjuku Station Metro Promenade, the Crisis Core: FFVII Reunion ad is 14 meters (about 45 feet) long and divided into two "sides:" the Zack Side and the Cloud Side. The two sides are linked by the Buster Sword wielded by both Final Fantasy VII stars. Travelers walking from one end of the poster to the other will see the image change from Zack to Cloud and vice-versa.

This is because the Crisis Core: FFVII Reunion poster is printed using a technique called "bellows printing." A single partial image is printed on each of a surface consisting of triangular ridges. When viewers approach from one side, they only see one image. The second image is on the other side of the poster's ridges, and is hidden from view until they get to the other side of the poster and view it from the opposite angle.

Viewers standing near the ad will also be able to hear Ayaka's "Why," the game's theme song.

See the Crisis Core: Reunion bellows print poster in action below.

Genshin Impact Duelist Rising Web Event Begins to Celebrate the TCG

Genshin Impact Duelist Rising Web Event Begins to Celebrate the TCG

Ahead of certain character debuts or new features, HoYoVerse often holds Genshin Impact web events. These serve as a way to introduce things. Participation is encouraged via rewards like Primogems. Well, ahead of the Genius Invokation TCG debut, a Genshin Impact Duelist Rising web event began. People can immediately start seeing cards and earning items at the official site.

Here’s how the Genshin Impact Duelist Rising web event works. Once you log in, you can complete missions to unlock character and action cards. These are just to see in the event. You aren’t actually unlocking them to use in the Genshin Impact TCG. When you get a chance to unlock cards, you can choose which six elemental types you want it to belong to. Every time you tap to unlock cards, you get one random character card and four random action cards. If you get duplicates, you can trade with friends to build your virtual collection.

Preview: Dragon Quest Treasures Reminds Me of the Monsters Spin-offs

Dragon Quest Treasures is this entirely new sort of spin-off for the Dragon Quest series. Tapping into Dragon Quest XI, it pulls younger versions of the thief Erik and his sister Mia as they go off on a search for, well, treasure. Early promotional materials suggested an action-RPG with exploration on various islands. However, in my first few hours with the game, I also was delighted by how often it reminded me of the Dragon Quest Monsters series.

Part of it hit me before the game even began. I mean, this is a TOSE project, and the company also worked on games like Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Heart, Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker and its sequels, and Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry’s Wonderland 3D. So coming in, I had that hit of nostalgia. The fact that we have two child protagonists working alongside monsters they recruit? Well, it left me with high hopes.

League of Legends Fighting Game “Project L” Details Gameplay & Tag Mechanics in New Video

1 year 4 months ago

Riot Games released a new video dedicated to the upcoming League of Legends fighting game code-named Project L.

The video, hosted by executive producer Tom Cannon and game director Shaun Rivera, focuses starts with an update about the new character named Illaoi, a Kraken Priestess who will appear in the game and that was originally revealed in the summer.

We finally get to take a look at her work-in-progress gameplay showing how she fights with spiritual tentacles.

We then get to see the basics of gameplay that is solidly rooted in movement, with several different ways of moving around the stage. Many champions also have their own unique air mobility options. Both offense and defense are showcased in the video as well.

A very relevant part of the video is about the game’s tag mechanics. Project L was originally developed as a 1v1 game, but it was then switched to a tag team setup a couple of years ago.

The tag system can be used both offensively and defensively, allowing players to switch their characters at a button press and triggering assists as well.

This is the last time we hear about the game this year, but more news has been promised for 2023.

Hands on with The Witcher 3's next-gen update: PS5 and Series X tested

1 year 4 months ago

The Witcher 3's next-gen update arrives on 14th December, at last giving the game a proper release on PS5, Series X and Series S. And equally, it enhances the PC version with a suite of long-awaited upgrades including ray-tracing support. Seven years after the original release, after multiple expansions and a successful Netflix adaptation, this update is the perfect opportunity to craft an ultimate version for longterm fans and newcomers alike. And I'm glad to report, after flying to developer CDPR's offices in Warsaw last week to go hands on with the PS5 and Series X versions, this revitalised release very much looks to be delivering on that promise.

While we weren't allowed direct capture at the event, we were provided with footage of the first 15 minutes of the new update running on PS5 and Series X, in both their performance and RT modes - more than enough for a preview ahead of a full breakdown closer to release. As always with preview capture, it's worth stressing all of this is still being optimised and the final release may be improved further.

Still, The Witcher 3 on PS5 and Series X impressed hugely in the four hours we played it - and not just in the visual upgrades, which include reworked foliage, 4K textures and higher-quality models throughout. There are also significant quality of life improvements, like a revised camera and faster controls for using signs, the magic spells of the Witcher universe. All told, the game truly looks and plays better than ever before.

Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer "had to go away" after game's rocky launch

1 year 4 months ago

CD Projekt Red has shed more light on the reason why multiplayer never materialised for Cyberpunk 2077.

Simply put, the game's rocky 2020 launch changed the studio's plans. CD Projekt Red had to prioritise fixing the single-player experience, and multiplayer suffered as a result.

"We really needed to look at what were the priorities for Cyberpunk [after it launched]," Philipp Weber told me when I visited the studio last week. Weber was senior quest designer and coordinator on Cyberpunk 2077. Today, he's acting narrative director of the new Witcher game codenamed Polaris.

The next-gen update doesn't transform The Witcher 3, but it does make returning to it a pleasure

1 year 4 months ago

It's 2022, seven years after The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt came out, yet here I am at CD Projekt Red in Poland, playing it. There's been a whole Cyberpunk 2077 in between - I remember talking to the team around the time Witcher 3 expansion Blood and Wine came out and hearing how excited people were to be moving onto something that wasn't Witcher, after 10 years of working on it. But here the studio is talking about The Witcher again, about both new games it's making and new improvements it's making to that game again, the third game, the one that shot it to stardom. The doors to CD Projekt Red are open again - after two years of bunkered Cyberpunk fixing and Coronavirus managing - and it's The Witcher 3 welcoming us back in. It's safe ground, familiar ground; it's telling how important that third game continues to be.

But this patch isn't really more than a palette cleanser for the studio; what becomes apparent after spending a few hours with the next-gen update is there isn't a great deal to it. And I don't say that to trash it: what's there is more generous than I'd imagined a next-gen update would be - there are quality of life and content additions that go above and beyond what I originally expected and, I think, what the studio expected to do. But it doesn't transform the experience, The Witcher 3 does not now suddenly feel, or look, like a new game.

Here's everything we learned about The Witcher 3 next-gen patch while at CD Projekt Red

1 year 4 months ago

Last week, I travelled to CD Projekt Red to play the long-awaited next-gen update for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which will be released 14th December - AKA next week. I spent a few hours with the update, playing with the new graphical options, the quality of life improvements, and the quest tied to unlocking gear from the The Witcher Netflix show. And I talked to acting narrative director Philip Webber about it, too.

I've written more flowerily about what it's like to go back to the game with all these bells and whistles on, but here, in what I think is a more easily digestible form, is everything I learned about it.

More importantly: "Roach can walk backwards now. Or actually, if Roach is standing there's even now a hidden button that you can kick. Or I think Roach now lifts her head if you're in the water. We tried to put in lots of these small things for people to just find, that we won't even put into the patch notes." I didn't get a chance to test these after I spoke to Weber.

Netflix really wants to reassure us all about Geralt's recasting in The Witcher

Earlier this year, we were all surprised to hear that Henry Cavill was stepping away from Netflix's The Witcher adaptation. In his stead, The Hunger Games' Liam Hemsworth would be taking over the role of Geralt of Rivia for the show's fourth season.

Now, Netflix is doing what it can to reassure fans that, while this will clearly be a change for the series, it will also bring a "different energy" to the show that the producers are excited about.

Speaking at The Witcher: Blood Origin's UK junket, showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich addressed the series' recasting with a variety of outlets.

This new trailer highlights the clash between Vash and his brother, Millions Knives. Humanity is stranded in a desert planet, forced to rely on Plants, valuable biological power reactors that can’t be replicated. Knives seeks to collect all Plants, and Vash is set to stop him.

Check out the trailer below. English subtitles are available in the closed captions.

Along with the release date, this new trailer revealed the opening and ending themes for Trigun Stampede. The opening theme is called "TOMBI," performed by Japanese hip hop artist Kvi Baba. The ending theme is called "Hoshi no Kuzu α (Waste of the Stars Alpha)," composed by Haruka Nakamura and performed by singer Salyo.

In a previous tweet, studio Orange confirmed that this new retelling of Trigun was only possible thanks to the original manga being complete. Two characters present in the trailer are William Conrad and Livio the Double Fang, which were exclusive to the manga. Their appearances, along with other hints present in the trailer, point to this new adaptation sticking closer to completed source material.

Fire Emblem Heroes Book 7 Begins, Adds Seidr

The latest Feh Channel appeared on December 4, 2022. As expected, it announced Book 7’s story will be told in Fire Emblem Heroes and revealed new characters Seidr, Heidr, and Gullveig. Seider is the Realm of Light Vanaheimr’s god. The new book will appear on December 7, 2022, as will a banner with characters from Fire Emblem Fates. There are also new adjustments and features for existing modes coming in the update.

First, here’s the Fire Emblem Heroes Book 7 movie that introduces Seidr and sets the stage for the new storyline. Not long after meeting Seidr and Heidr in the game, Heidr is taken by Gullveig. It will be up to players to save her. If you complete chapter 13 of book 7, you get the Seidr: Goddess of Hope unit.

Genshin Impact Scaramouche Web Event Sends The Wanderer Around Sumeru Fluttering Footsteps in the Fields

There's more than one web event live in Genshin Impact. HoYoVerse kicked off two ahead of the 3.3 update. This second one is called Fluttering Footsteps in the Fields. This web event follows Scaramouche, who will be joining Genshin Impact as a playable character called the Wanderer. In it, players can follow him around to earn rewards. People can visit the official site to participate.

Here’s how Fluttering Footsteps in the Fields works. When this Genshin Impact event begins, Scaramouche is walking around Sumeru as The Wanderer. When he does, you can click on his surroundings. He will then react to the different things he sees. You’ll then be able to check the experience records to see the full experiences. When you do, you can perform certain actions to see his silhouette in a space. (This can involve sharing a picture or visiting the YouTube channel.)

There are a few rewards connected to the event. To start, you can earn a wallpaper of Scaramouche for participating. People can also earn 2 Mystic Enhancement Ores, 3 Vayunda Turquoise Fragments, 40 Primogems, and 20,000 Mora.

Twang your lute as you explore a musical land in this cute indie game

1 year 4 months ago

Grab your lute and set off for adventure in Stomp Plonk, a lovely new indie game about exploring a musical fantasy land. Delightfully, its soundtrack is built from loops tied to the animations of people doing things around the world: xylophone plings from little guys tossing coins into a fountain; drum beats from jesters dancing or goblins smashing dead gnomes; barbershop mutterings from pipe-smoking fishermen; long horns from passing ships; organ notes from giant seabirds stretching their necks; and so many more. A bit like Proteus meets Bernband and Alien Caseno with the added ability to make annoying noises by slamming on your lute.
