The Callisto Protocol, The Kotaku Review

Bizarrely, after a biophage mutant, limbs falling off it as easily as scooping into a pudding, puts its hands into my mouth and rips my jaw from my face for the fifth time, it comes to me: Oh, this is a transportation game.

Byleth in Fire Emblem Engage Can Rewind Time

1 year 3 months ago

fire emblem engage byleth

The latest Fire Emblem Engage character that Nintendo introduced is Byleth, one of the past heroes you can summon with an Emblem Ring.  Byleth was the protagonist of Fire Emblem: Three Houses, which was the previous mainline title. While the player could choose Byleth’s gender in their actual game, Byleth will appear as a man in Fire Emblem Engage.

Byleth will be a support unit. He can raise his allies’ stats, as well as use Divine Pulse to reset an attack. If an attack was going to miss, he can rewind time and the attack will land on the second try. There is a chance that Divine Pulse will not work, though, so the success rate will likely depend on one of Byleth’s stats. Byleth will work the best when around allies, rather than on his own.

https://twitter.com/FireEmblemJP/status/1598578121888137219?t=SqpFngd6kwWIUAWA__tsAg&s=19

There is also a conversation between Alcryst and Byleth, which lets someone see how the characters interact with the past heroes. In the short clip, Byleth compliments Alcryst on his skills in the previous battle. However, Alcryst takes it the wrong way. After reacting with fear, he asks if Byleth is indirectly telling him that he needs to defeat more enemies.

Monster Hunter Rise PS4 and PS5 Lacks Cross-Save Support

Monster Hunter Rise PS4 and PS5 Lacks Cross-Save Support

Capcom clarified just how compatible the Monster Hunter Rise PS4 and PS5 versions will be, noting details about cross-save support. There will be no cross-progression possible with the game. A representative confirmed this to Digital Trends after the initial announcement. However, the additional details also noted the cross-progression and cross-saves will be available for the Xbox One and Xbox Series X. [Thanks, Digital Trends!]

How cross-save support would work would mean someone could begin playing Monster Hunter Rise on a PS4, then use that same save file on the PS5. (Or vice versa.)

However, there will be some cross-platform compatibility when Monster Hunter Rise launches on the PS4 and PS5. Cross-play will be available. So someone playing on a PS4 will be able to go on hunts with a person on a PS5. This feature is restricted by platforms, though. So PS4 and PS5 folks can play together, but wouldn't be able to play with those on Xbox platforms.

There are some exclusive features confirmed for the PS5 version of Monster Hunter Rise. For example, it will take advantage of the DualSense controller. Adaptive triggers will work with some weapons.

1 year 3 months ago

Sifu, the acclaimed martial arts adventure from Absolver developer Sloclap, is being turned into live-action movie by John Wick writer Derek Kolstad.

That's according to Deadline, which suggests the movie will retain the same basic kung-fu-infused revenge plot as Sloclap's video game, complete with the twist that its protagonist gets steadily older each time they're resurrected by their magical pendant upon death, despite the world around them staying the same.

Deadline says the movie is being described as "John Wick meets M. Night Shyamalan's Old".

The Callisto Protocol Developers Are Aware of Performance Issues on PC, Promise Patch

1 year 3 months ago

Today’s launch of the survival horror game The Callisto Protocol was marred by stuttering issues on PC, but help is on the way.

The developers at Striking Distance Studios took to Twitter to announce that they’re aware of the issues, and a patch is coming to improve performance. Further updates will also be forthcoming down the line.

While they did not provide a precise timeline, they did mention the update would come “in a few hours,” so it might arrive today.

The Callisto Protocol is now available for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, Xbox One, and PC. If you’d like to read more, you can read our interview with Striking Distance Studios chief technology officer Mark James.

The game is directed by Dead Space co-creator Glen Schofield, and the legacy of the defunct studio Visceral Games certainly feels like it’s returning in The Callisto Protocol’s flavor.

It’s set in the year 2320, prompting the player to take on the role of Jacob Lee, an inmate at Black Iron Prison, a maximum-security penitentiary on Jupiter’s moon, Callisto.

If that wasn’t enough of a bad start, the other inmates start mutating into horrifying monsters. In order to survive, Jacob has to find a way to fight back and escape from the prison. Of course, like all unlikely heroes, he’ll have to uncover the mysteries hidden deep under the surface of Callisto.

The Callisto Protocol premises visceral hand-to-hand and ranged combat, plenty of horrifying mutated monsters, and a lot of gore, which never hurts in this kind of game.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns Celebrates Release by Showing Character Customization & Cool Suits

1 year 3 months ago

2K Games and Firaxis Games released the tactical RPG Marvel’s Midnight Suns, and they’re celebrating with a special video.

The trailer that you can see below is basically a virtual “fashion show” featuring the character customization and some of the cool outfits that you can use to customize your personal Marvel superhero.

You can have them dressed both for battle and for chilling at the Abbey, and there are plenty of new pieces that you can unlock by playing the game.

The outfits were mostly put together by members of the development team, so they certainly know how to go deep into the game’s wardrobe. Interestingly, especially if you consider how the game is basically a war against demons, most seem to have gone for a rather demonic look. Fight fire with fire, perhaps?

You can enjoy the video below.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns is now available for PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC on Dec. 2. On the other hand, the release date for PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One versions has been further delayed and will be shared at a later date.

A New NetherRealm Game Won't Be Revealed at The Game Awards

1 year 3 months ago

Four years after Mortal Kombat 11's surprise reveal during 2018's Game Awards, some fans have speculated that this year's Game Awards show might include an announcement of a new Mortal Kombat title. Unfortunately for fans of the series, however, Mortal Kombat developer NetherRealm Studios isn't quite ready to reveal a new game.

Today, Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon said in a Tweet that the next installation in the Mortal Kombat series won't be revealed during this year's Game Awards.

"4 years ago at the Game Awards we managed to pull off a surprise announcement of MK11, which turned out great," Boon wrote. "Perhaps too great, as many assumed we'd repeat that trick for our next game. Thank you for the anticipation, but we're not ready to announce the next NRS game yet."

DJ Game Fuser to Sunset Live Services

1 year 3 months ago

Harmonix is shutting down live services for Fuser, its two-year-old DJ simulator, on December 19.

On that day, Fuser and its DLC will no longer be available to purchase, according to Harmonix, and those who already own it will be restricted to two game modes: Campaign and Quick Play. The developer stopped releasing new paid DLC for Fuser earlier in 2022.

Fuser is Harmonix's most recent music game. Players take on the role of a festival DJ trying to conquer the music world.

Using a mixing table, players can mix and match different tracks from popular songs to create original remixes. The game features a full story mode as well as an online competitive mode, but the latter will seemingly be shut down following the sunset.

Harmonix was acquired by Epic Games in November 2021. At the time, the developer said it would "create musical journeys and gameplay for Fortnite," while continuing to release new DLC for Rock Band 4, which it's done as recently as December 1.

In the same blog post, Harmonix stated it wasn't "planning to change the way we support any of our older games," including Fuser, though plans and priorities, of course, are subject to change.

Primitive, an Unreal Engine 5-Powered First-Person Survival Game, Announced for PC

1 year 3 months ago

Developer Games Box S.A. has announced Primitive, a new Unreal Engine 5-powered first-person survival game set in a hostile open-world Stone Age. It's in development for PC, though no release date has been set.

"The project is still at its early development stage. Thinking of similar games, Primitive is close to such titles as Far Cry Primal, yet our concept focuses more strongly on showing the primal character of a real world from many thousands of years ago, where it all boiled down to raw power, as well as a fight for dominance and survival," says Tomasz Supeł, CEO of Games Box S.A.

A third-person view will be available in addition to first-person, while you'll face off against not just the elements, but also rival Neanderthal tribes, Sabretooth Tigers, and Wooly Mammoths. You'll also need to build your shelter, while dynamically changing weather will also throw a wrench into your best-laid plans for survival.

If you're interested, you can wishlist Primitive on Steam.

The situation sucks for the Stadia team, and the numerous developers who were caught short by Google's failure to communicate Stadia's imminent demise. If you've spent the past three years mostly buying games through Stadia though then crikey, that's a nice windfall.

Chaotic card game Munchkin mooches onto Steam

1 year 3 months ago

Within the joyful depths of tabletop board gaming lies a genre known as 'take-that' style card games. They revolve around people pulling out cards that suddenly give them extra power or abilities, with counterplays almost entirely dependent on whether you happen to draw the right card in response. Munchkin is the king of these, at least in terms of popularity, having sent millions of players all over the world into dungeons where they competitively slay goofy horrors.

I cannot stand it, but it is now on Steam in early access, and statistically speaking a lot of people will be very happy about that.

We start with an announcement from Aerosoft and its partner developer FlightSim Studio (which worked on the SeaRey Elite), which announced the Embraer E-Jets series, promising one of the most popular regional airliner series in the world.

We get a rather charming trailer, but no real information on the features this aircraft will have, albeit another video about the flight deck and systems has been promised.

Of course, we also don’t have any info on pricing and release window either, so we’ll have to wait and see.

The Callisto Protocol Performance Review

1 year 3 months ago

The Callisto Protocol is a game with a myriad of inspirations and references within its design, but on the technical front it is most certainly a leader. Striking Distance is a relatively small, and certainly new studio, filled with a mix of veterans and new members who have collaborated to create one of the most forward-looking games of this generation. But before I get into that, I need to note that while the game is cross-generation, our review code only had access to the new-gen consoles and later the PC version.

Game Modes

The PS5 and Xbox Series X both have two modes: one is the default, which you could call a Quality mode or Ray Tracing mode, which runs at 30fps and has a dynamic scaling resolution with counts ranging from 3456x1944 to 2304x1296, effectively 90% to 60% of 4K. This is then improved, I suspect, by Unreal Engine’s TAAU to up-sample that back to 4K as often as possible. The image treatment here from that lower base is staggering, and I would not be shocked to learn that the team that has built or enhanced this with their own custom resolve and AA pass, as it can easily pass as 4K aside from some high-contrast areas that can be slightly unstable from the jittered rendering resolve it uses to up-sample. The game also supports FSR 2.1, with the caveat that this could be what the consoles are using, and the dynamic scaling could be higher or lower. Due to its dark look, gritty world, gore, and violence, this is a game that benefits greatly both from the Film Grain, which can improve perceived sharpness of the image, and the superb Per Pixel Motion Blur that assists greatly in the fully real-time cinematics, often convincing you they are genuine offline renders from only last generation.

HBO has released a new trailer for The Last of Us, its upcoming TV series based on the hit Naughty Dog game of the same name. And it looks awesome (and sad...very, very sad).

The show's first bit of footage was released back in August and slowly, HBO has been revealing more and more about The Last of Us. We've seen Pedro Pascal's Joel and Bella Ramsey's Ellie in previous footage, but today's trailer gives us our longest look yet at the duo. Both continue to embody the spirit of Joel and Ellie in the games well and you can watch new footage of their scenes in the newest trailer below:

As you can see, the trailer features a lot more of Joel and Ellie, but it also gives us new looks at clickers, a bloater, and possibly even David (although it could be someone else, like one of David's henchmen). We also see Bill and Frank, and this trailer seems to tease that we'll be getting a lot more of their relationship in the show than we did in the game. In a blink-and-you'll-miss-it couple of moments, we even see Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, who voiced Joel and Ellie in the games (shout-out to SlashFilm for catching that):

PSA: This Workaround Easily Unlocks The Callisto Protocol’s Hardest Achievement

1 year 3 months ago

The Callisto Protocol is finally here after years of being worked on by Dead Space creator Glen Schofield. Players assume the role of Jacob Lee, who finds himself an inmate in Callisto’s Black Iron Prison. What starts as a prison sentence escalates into a fight for his life as Black Iron Prison becomes overrun by vicious mutant zombies.

Surviving in prison isn’t easy, and it’s even tougher for all the achievement hunters and completionists playing this game. The Callisto Protocol boasts a trophy requiring players to complete the game on the hardest difficulty, and it’s been made very apparent that the hardest difficulty is indeed pretty hard.

However, a clever little workaround has been discovered to mitigate the rage-inducing moments. Kinda Funny co-founder and former IGN video host Greg Miller has shared findings that players looking to earn “The Protocol is About Life” achievement easily can play through the game on any difficulty and earn the difficulty trophy.
