Far Cry 6: Lost Between Worlds DLC Review

1 year 5 months ago

While Far Cry 6’s previous DLCs may have put past villains from the series into the spotlight, the latest expansion returns to familiar territory in a different way: by totally jumping the shark. Dropping you back in the shoes of Dani Rojas, Lost Between Worlds is all about an alien entity called Fai that crash-lands in Yara, creating a multitude of time rifts and portals to alternate dimensions. What ensues is a web of interconnected semi-roguelite levels that you’re free to playthrough in any order you want. It’s a genuinely fun way to bring an end to Dani’s story that I found myself happily plowing through all six hours of in a single day, even if it did essentially feel like a watered down version of the main game.

Ixion review: an intricate management sim wrapped in a stirring space opera

1 year 5 months ago

Ixion starts by asking the question "What if Homeworld was a management sim?". It then proceeds to answer that question in a comprehensive and convincing manner. Bulwark Studios' star hopping epic takes the operatic, elegiac grandeur of Relic's RTS classic, but replaces the space battles with a chewy mixture of stellar logistics.

Also like Homeworld, it's a darned stylish thing. The game commences with a spectacular intro cutscene wherein a futuristic space-shuttle launches from Earth, breaking through the atmosphere to dock with a gigantic, revolving space-station like a chromed hubcap off some petrolhead's pride & joy. The cutscene neatly transitions into the play-perspective, where you see that same shuttle slide into the docking bay from the cold void outside. Welcome to the Tiqqun, Administrator. Your long journey starts here.

Marvel Snap’s New Featured Location Kills Off the Game’s Meta Deck… For Now

1 year 5 months ago

The new Featured Location is finally out in Marvel Snap, and it’s Lamentis. This definitely has the potential to be one of the most polarizing locations in the game as the location effect is as follows: Draw 3 cards. Destroy both decks.

Right off the bat, if you’ve been playing that gross Bast-Negative-Sera-Silver Surfer deck, this entirely negates the Negative portion of your strategy. Once your deck is destroyed, you’ll have to make do with whatever’s in your hand, and whatever you were lucky enough to draw. Bast can still come in pretty clutch here, though, as she sets the power of all cards in your hand to 3.

Cards like Black Widow can also be devastating. When paired with Uatu to get a sneak peek at the game’s locations, a well-timed Black Widow can cut off your opponent’s draws right before Lamentis hits, which will almost assuredly result in a retreat. You’ll also want to consider your hand size, as not playing cards before Lamentis may prevent you from getting the three extra draws. Cards like Quicksilver and Domino may actually come in handy here.

If you hate this location, have no fear. Featured Locations only have a 40% chance of showing up in your games, and they only last for 48 hours.

Marvel Snap is now available on PC and mobile devices.

An AI Rendition of Wes Anderson’s Avengers Is as Deliciously Charming as It Sounds

1 year 5 months ago

The next Avengers film may still be years away. Still, the dynamic directing duo behind Infinity War and Endgame recently shared what the Avengers might look like — according to an AI image generator — if directed by the unlikely choice of Wes Anderson. Known for his quirky films with a distinct look, Anderson would certainly bring a different feel to the MCU.

Of course, something like this is a complete pipe dream that might only be possible in a film like Beyond the Spiderverse where an Andersonesque Spider-Man could exist in another universe. Yet, it’s a fun look at well-known characters with similar designs to what is in the MCU with just a little bit of that Anderson style.

Below, you can see all eight images posted by the Russo brothers on Instagram earlier this week.

Microsoft Has Made a '10-Year Commitment' to Bring Call of Duty to Nintendo Consoles

1 year 5 months ago

Microsoft has officially entered into a "10-year commitment" to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo consoles following its acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer shared the news on Twitter alongside confirming Microsoft will continue to offer Call of Duty titles on Steam after the deal has closed as well.

The last time a mainline Call of Duty title was on a Nintendo Console was 2013's Call of Duty: Ghosts, which made its way to the Wii U. Since then, Nintendo owners have been left behind when it comes to one of the best-selling game franchises of all time.

In October 2022, Spencer said he'd "love" to see Call of Duty on Switch and that the Xbox's intention is to "treat Call of Duty like Minecraft." It looks as though now that plan is in motion.

Microsoft agrees 10-year deal to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo if Activision Blizzard buyout goes through

1 year 5 months ago

Microsoft has agreed a 10-year deal to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo if its buyout of Activision Blizzard goes through.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer tweeted the announcement, which also confirms the company's commitment to continue to release Call of Duty games on Valve's Steam platform "simultaneously to Xbox", if the gargantuan $69 billion offer to buy Activision Blizzard is approved. Call of Duty's latest releases, Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2.0, are already on Steam.

The announcement is a direct response to the scrutiny the acquisition has come under from a raft of organisations across the world, chief among them the Federal Trade Commission in the US and the Competition and Markets Authority in the UK.

Microsoft Pledges to Bring Call of Duty to Nintendo Platforms for the Next 10 Years

1 year 5 months ago

As Microsoft works towards closing their acquisition of Activision Blizzard while awaiting approval from the FTC, Phil Spencer has put out a couple of tweets stating the company’s intention to bring Call of Duty games to Nintendo platforms for the next 10 years.

In addition to that, Spencer also stated that the company was committed to bringing the series to Steam at the same time as Xbox going forward. He reaffirms the belief that Microsoft wants to be able to bring games to a wider audience, regardless of how they choose to play.

This certainly falls in line with the Xbox ethos, as the “console wars” of years past have grown increasingly irrelevant while Microsoft focuses more on Game Pass, and Play Anywhere program allowing players to enjoy their games on PC without having to own an Xbox console.

Final Fantasy 14's controller options opened the game up for me

1 year 5 months ago

Having a chronic pain disorder has affected my ability to play games in ways that I never thought possible. Pressing buttons rapidly cramps my hands. Using my mechanical keyboard can give me repetitive strain injury, and can leave me using wrist splints for weeks to recover. Gaming is a huge part of my life, being a gaming journalist and a Twitch streamer. However, it can be a detriment to my health and I have to be careful in the games I play, the choices I make and the equipment that I use so that I have the safest and most comfortable experience possible.

This wasn't a problem for me a couple of years ago, but I've recently been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I've felt the full effects when trying to play MMORPGs. From being able to spam buttons with no problem when playing tanks in World of Warcraft to suddenly feeling exhausted doing the smallest rotations, I've had to carefully consider my classes and what is easiest and most accessible for me.

Let's talk about World of Warcraft first. This was my introduction to MMOs, and was also my introduction when it came to finding my comfort levels - and knowing when to stop. One thing I truly admire about WoW that a lot of other MMOs don't allow for is the ability to play on a touchpad. I actually adapted to this style of play from the get-go through poverty and not having access to a desk, instead playing WoW on a laptop in my bed. It's not the best setup, admittedly, but it worked for me. It's how I fell in love with the game, and I haven't stopped since.

Tales of Arise: Beyond the Dawn European Trademark Filed

Tales of Arise: Beyond the Dawn Trademark filed

Something more to do with Tales of Arise could be on the way. A new Bandai Namco trademark tied to the latest entry in the series appeared. In Europe, the company called dibs on Tales of Arise: Beyond the Dawn with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). [Thanks, Yoonshik on Resetera!]

The filing date for Tales of Arise: Beyond the Dawn is December 12, 2022. It falls under the 9 and 41 Nice Classes for “Goods and Services,” meaning it is connected to video games and arcade games.

Bandai Namco hasn't said anything about this potential project yet. However, staff did speak to possible DLC and sequel plans for the game not long after it launched. Back on July 29, 2021, Producer Yusuke Tomizawa said there would be no DLC, prequel, or sequel to the game. At the time, Tomizawa seemed adamant that this would be a stand-alone title. The only sort of additional content confirmed involved crossovers with mobile games in the series.

Looking back on Nintendo's Call of Duty offerings from over the years

1 year 5 months ago

This morning, Xbox head Phil Spencer let the world know Microsoft was planning to sweeten its $68.7bn Activision Blizzard deal (perhaps specifically with the FTC in mind) by assuring consumers that, should the company's proposed acquisition go through, it would commit to putting Call of Duty titles onto Nintendo consoles for 10 years.

As part of this announcement, Spencer stated "Microsoft is committed to helping bring more games to more people - however they choose to play."

So, how do people choose to play Call of Duty? Well, for this current generation of consoles at least, not on a Nintendo Switch. There simply just isn't the option to do so.

Need for Speed Unbound Review – Lengths Behind a Podium Finish

1 year 5 months ago

Need for Speed Unbound on PS5

When it comes to the racing genre, it hasn’t always been the playground of games like Forza Motorsport or Gran Turismo. Street racing has been a critical part of the genre, and the Need for Speed series is a huge part of that. However, the wheels have certainly come off in recent times, and the hope is that Criterion Software and Electronic Arts’ Need for Speed Unbound will be the key turning point for this particular franchise. Unfortunately, as much as it tries to speed ahead, this is one game that still has its grip firmly on the handbrake of the past.

At first glance, the most obvious difference with Need for Speed Unbound is the unmistakable art style. The vibrancy it brings is definitely a breath of fresh air, especially compared to the neverending arms race to achieve photorealism in games like Gran Turismo 7 and Forza Horizon 5. Best described as a mixture of comic book art and realism, the juxtaposition of realistic vehicles and cel-shaded characters work nicely to deliver a unique world.

Yellowstone Season 5, Episode 5 Recap and Plot Points You Might’ve Missed

1 year 5 months ago

Yellowstone episode 5 marks a much-needed change of pace for the series as a whole with its shift away from the never-ending problems of the Duttons to some moments of healing and progression. As the season approaches its midway point, there needs to be a good balance of resolution, character growth, and new threats. In its entirety, the episode barely spends any time with the cowboys at the ranch and instead focuses on the personal lives of the Duttons. The looming threat of the NGO that wants answers about the murdered wolves isn’t even mentioned here. There are still plenty of monumental shifts, though. Here is the Yellowstone season 5, episode 5 recap, and plot points you might’ve missed.

Elden Ring DLC Comes With a Ton of Balance Updates, Bug Fixes, and New Hairstyles

1 year 5 months ago

Elden Ring's free Colosseum Update has arrived alongside a ton of balance changes, bug fixes, and even new hairstyles for the game's character creation.

Outlined in a Bandai Namco blog post, Elden Ring Version 1.08 is headlined by the PvP centric DLC announced yesterday but also serves as a fairly large patch for the game.

Five new hairstyles have been added (which can be viewed below thanks to Reddit user Katherine P), which are available when creating a character initially or later by using the Round Table Hold Clouded Mirror Stand.

Balance updates have been broken down into two categories: general adjustments and PvP exclusive changes. The general changes include fairly significant changes to the speed, distance, and recovery time of some attacks when using daggers, axes, and hammers, and when dual-wielding flails.

The speed of two-handing a Twinblade weapon has been increased, however, alongside the speed of using Reaper, Fist, and Claw weapons. A full list of the general changes can be found below.

Dwarf Fortress review: the legendary colony sim gets a welcome facelift for Steam

1 year 5 months ago

How the heck do you review Dwarf Fortress? Much like the procedurally generated world spat out at the start of every game, there’s already a huge pile of established lore and history out there from the 16 years it’s been around. It’s like being asked to review Lord of the Rings. It's a vast undertaking, and there aren't any friendly eagles on hand to cut through its dense mythos. Prior to releasing on Steam, I had put a few dozen hours into what is now known as Dwarf Fortress Classic (which is still available for free from Bay 12's website), split over several different periods of time. Thing is, I never really got very far. I’d find a good tutorial, lose a few fortresses to horrible mistakes and then really get established. But then I’d be distracted by the realities of everyday life and by the time I got back to it, I’d forgotten everything and all my resources were hopelessly out of date because of all the wonderful, lovingly detailed updates. Then the cycle would start again.

Char and Amuro Duel in Gundam Evolution 3D Billboard Ad

1 year 5 months ago

Gundam Evolution 3D Billboard

The destined battle from both Mobile Suit Gundam and Char's Counterattack continues in a new Gundam Evolution 3D Billboard advertisement. Bandai Namco debuted a new presentation for the Cross Shinjuku Vision 3D billboard to promote the game. [Thanks, Game Watch!]

Check out a video of the ad in action below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qWxP_HVJos

The ad features the RX-93 ν Gundam ("Nu" Gundam) fighting against the MSN-04 Sazabi, both as seen in Gundam Evolution. As in Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack, the two mobile suits duel using their characteristic "Funnel" remote weapons. The ad features voice-acting from Toru Furuya, the actor who plays protagonist Amuro Ray. Amuro says that "Gundam Evolution isn't just for PCs!" This is a pun on a line from Char's Counterattack where he says that "The ν Gundam isn't just a showpiece," and also references the recent launch of the console versions of Gundam Evolution. A 3D billboard like the Cross Shinjuku Vision uses specially arranged LED screens to play custom videos. The videos use the screens' seamlessness to project the illusion of 3D space, so objects can "pop out". The effect was used to promote Pokemon Scarlet and Violet ahead of launch.

Review: The Rumble Fish 2 is Filled With Intertwining Mechanics

1 year 5 months ago

rumble fish 2

The Rumble Fish 2, a 2005 arcade game that previously hadn’t received an official global console release, offers some interesting mechanics for someone looking for something new (that’s technically old). Giving you defensive and offensive bars, it offers a lot of options in each round as you pit its gang of oddball characters against one another in a battle to beat each other’s clothes off. I doubt it’ll steal you away from whatever fighter you’re regularly playing now, but it’s a fun diversion with some good depth.

It's the sixth Fight For Survival (FFS), and you’re battling your way to the top using one of thirteen different warriors to beat your way to the top. There’s a solid variety of characters in this group as well. Mito, a young lady with an eyepatch and a sword, uses two different stances, Crime and Punishment. These allow her to switch from a relentless rushdown character to someone who can poke the opponent to keep them out. Boyd is a tough retiree (who’s definitely hiding a small animal in his hat) who loves to beat you down up close. Some of his moves build a scorpion meter, which, when it reaches thirteen, means his supers will deal absurd damage.

Gundam: Witch From Mercury Anime Delayed Twice More

Gundam Witch from Mercury Delayed

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury will face two more broadcast delays before its first season ends. According to the show's official Twitter account, the delays will occur for a week in December, and on New Year's Day 2023. Both times it will be due to vacating the time slot for special programming aired by Japan's TBS broadcasting company.

https://twitter.com/G_Witch_M/status/1600037400775839750

According to the official broadcast schedule detailing the Gundam: The Witch From Mercury delay, episode 10 of the show will air as planned on December 11, 2022. Then the show will be off-air on December 18, 2022, to make way for a special edition of TBS news program "Houdou no Hi." Thus, episode 11 airs on Christmas Day, December 25, 2022. The next week sees the schedule collide again with a global holiday: January 1st. The New Year's Day 2023 special programming takes priority then as well, pushing the final episode of the season to January 8, 2022.

This isn't the first time that Gundam: The Witch From Mercury has seen delays or other production disruptions. Episode 7 was pushed back a week, with a "clip show" recap taking its schedule. Voice actor Yume Miyamoto, who plays Nika Nanaura, stepped back from the role due to health problems. She will be replaced by Haruka Shiraishi starting in Episode 10.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe gets custom items feature today in free update

1 year 5 months ago

No blue shells? ALL BLUE SHELLS? Beautiful, perpetual chaos can now be yours whenever you desire, thanks to a free new Mario Kart 8 Deluxe update enabling players to define exactly which items they want to appear in their games.

As detailed in Nintendo's announcement tweet, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's new custom item feature works with offline VS races, as well as "certain" online modes, and gives players the ability to either randomise items that'll be available in their races or to toggle specific items on or off. And yes, that means competitions can now be entirely item-free.

That's not quite the end of it, either; in Team Races and Battles, it's even possible to allocate items to specific teams, meaning you can really pile on the pressure - perhaps all spiny shells against an increasingly sweaty palmed team armed with nothing but hooters?

The Digital Foundry Supporter Program - what we've achieved and where we're going next

1 year 5 months ago

It's been around 18 months now since we relaunched our Patreon as the Digital Foundry Supporter Program - and I wanted to take the opportunity to tell you what we've achieved in that time and where we aim to go next with the aid of your backing. For us at DF, it's been an interesting and successful experience based on a fundamental question: in a world packed with free reporting, can we actually sustain and grow what we do with help from the audience? And what if we invited these supporters to be closer to the team, to talk to us directly, and to offer a range of further benefits in the process?

Let's quickly talk about the basics of what we offer. The DF Supporter Program has three tiers: the $5/£5 supporter tier gives you access to our Discord - where the team regularly participate in discussions and answer questions - along with early access to DF Direct Weekly, the ability to pose questions for the show along with a weekly update from me that keeps backers fully up to speed with what projects each staff member is working on and what else is in the pipeline. High quality, ad-free video downloads? Yes, that's included too.

Speaking of downloads, we've upgraded our satellite website, digitalfoundry.net, to better service supporters, with easy access to our work. Everything we do is available for users to easily download in both h.264 and HEVC formats, with the format of the site changing according to your Patreon tier, allowing you to easily access exclusive material depending on the support level you've chosen.

Sonic and Genshin Impact fans squabble over The Game Awards' fan vote

1 year 5 months ago

Fans of Sonic the Hedgehog and Genshin Impact are fighting over various claims of foul play in relation to this year's Players' Voice fan vote at tomorrow's Game Awards.

The Players' Voice category is a 100 percent fan-voted award which this year has five possible choices as its finalists: Elden Ring, Genshin Impact, Stray, God of War Ragnarok and Sonic Frontiers. Over the past week, the vote has become mired in controversy amidst accusations of a broken poll, bots and bribery.

To be clear, there's no credible evidence of bribery, despite various fan claims foul play must be to blame for both Sonic (with a lower Metacritic score than other entrants) and Genshin Impact (whose detractors point out was first released in 2020) being way-off in the lead.

Fortnite’s My Hero Academia Collaboration Might Arrive Next Week

1 year 5 months ago

The first Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 1 trailer shown after the Fracture Event teased an upcoming collaboration with the popular anime series My Hero Academia. However, there has been no further information given from any official Fortnite channels. Though, it seems the My Hero Academia manga publisher has some news to share.

According to a Japanese magazine page (publication isn’t named) found by dataminer iFireMonkey, we are only a week out from the Fortnite x My Hero Academia collaboration. According to this, the collaboration will kick off on Friday, Dec. 16.

As you can see by the image, it very clearly references Fortnite x My Hero Academia, and the date given above is most certainly Dec. 16. The only thing missing is an idea of the scope of the collaboration. The most recent two collaborations, Naruto and Dragon Ball, both brought a whole event with them, rather than just simply skins being added to the Item Shop.
