2 years 4 months ago

The court date for the eighteenth door of the RPS Advent Calendar 2021 has arrived. Now listen, I know it's normal to get nervous before a big trial - it's only our sense of taste on the line, after all - but trust me, I've got the best and most experienced defence team lined up for this one and - wait, what's that? They've only been in training for three months? And they're not even properly qualified? Oh no, what have we done...

Nippon Ichi’s Dungeon Survival Strategy JRPG Shikabane Kurai no Bouken Meshi Gets New Gameplay Trailer

2 years 4 months ago

Today, Nippon Ichi Software released a new and extensive trailer of its new strategy JRPG “Shikabane Kurai no Bouken Meshi,” which translates as “Deadly Eating Adventure Meal.”

The game is a dungeon survival strategy JRPG that was originally announced at Tokyo Game Show and will release in Japan for PS4 and Nintendo Switch on January 27, 2022.

The trailer showcases plenty of gameplay and provides an overview of the game’s features, including deep (and adorable) character customization and the dungeon-delving proper.

Of course, as the title suggests, cooking and eating play a very important part in the “survival” objective of this title. Not only you can eat food that makes your characters more powerful, but also feed poisonous meals to enemies to weaken them.

You can check out the trailer below.

Shikabane Kurai no Bouken Meshi has been announced only for Japan for now, with no western localization confirmed by NIS America.

Guillermo del Toro Doesn't Think He'll Ever Develop a Game Again

2 years 4 months ago

Academy Award-winning director Guillermo del Toro, who was once attached to Konami's Silent Hills project with Hideo Kojima, has said he doesn't think he will ever try to develop a game again.

As reported by GameSpot, del Toro appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast and confirmed that he was not working on any Silent Hill-related projects. This question arrived after del Toro made an appearance at The Game Awards 2021 and playfully said that he loved the art direction in Silent Hill and hoped that we all get a new one soon.

The way he delivered the message made many believe he knew more than he was letting on, but it appears this is not the case and that del Toro may be done exploring the world of video games... at least for now.

Despite saying that he loves the idea of gaming "as a storytelling exercise," he doesn't think he "would develop a game again because [he's] the albatross of video gaming."

del Toro said these same words in 2015, and it appears he is still sticking to his promise.

While that may not be the news fans of del Toro's work may have wanted to hear, he at least shared a few more thoughts about the canceled Silent Hills project he was once working on with Kojima.

Naughty Dog Developers Name Their Games of the Year for 2021

2 years 4 months ago

Some of the developers at Naughty Dog - the game studio behind such series as The Last of Us and Uncharted - have revealed their favorite games of 2021.

Naughty Dog shared their list of favorite games that "inspired, excited, and -- above all -- entertained us" in a blogpost, and it all began with Bugsnax, where vice president Christian Gyrling said it was "a unique game that my 7-year old daughter and I bonded over."

Deathloop was the favorite of three devs at Naughty Dog, including game director Matthew Gallant, development director Waylon Brinck, and game director Kurt Margenau.

"Setting an immersive sim in a time loop was a brilliant idea," Gallant wrote. "Every space you visit and revisit becomes richer as you gain new tools, new information, and new appreciation of the environmental storytelling. The art direction is also stunning, layering 60’s Bond villain mansions atop abandoned bunkers from Lost, all on a gorgeously rugged and desolate island.

"Most importantly, Deathloop helped me break my bad immersive sim habits. The time loop structure gave me permission to let go of playing flawless zero-kill zero-alert runs, and adopt a more improvisational and chaotic playstyle. This was particularly true when invaded by a skilled Julianna player, instantly recontextualizing the map I had been stealthing through into a thrilling cat & mouse arena."

Fortnite was the favorite of game director Anthony Newman, who admitted he originally thought the game was "a mere toy for tweens, a passing fad that was only popular because of Drake."

New World Community Challenges the Devs to Play Their Own Endgame - and the Devs Accepted

2 years 4 months ago

A few New World players unhappy with the MMO's endgame issued a challenge to the developers at Amazon Game Studios to stream themselves doing a Myrkgard chest and portal run to show they actually play the game - and they accepted.

As reported by GameSpot, New World players started this petition after recent changes made high-level elite zones a lot more difficult than they were before. They wanted Amazon Games Studios to do this run to show a viable way to complete this tough endeavor.

To the community's surprise, Amazon accepted their challenge and posted a 55-minute "New World - Myrkgard Dev Run" that sees 10 developers - including game director Scot Lane - working their way through the requested run.

At the start, the devs admitted they weren't as powerful as some of New World's most dedicated players, but they were ready to take on the dangers nonetheless. A bit of hilarious chaos ensued as these devs attempted to make it through, and they even shared some tips along the way like "keep your tank up or bad things happen" and "sometimes surrender is the best option."

And surrender they did. After a respectable fight and some playful jabs at some of the teammates who drew too many enemies, they called it quits.

Halo Infinite Players Are Obsessed With the New Spartan Cat Ear Helmet Attachment

2 years 4 months ago

While Halo Infinite's campaign may be a story about Master Chief saving the galaxy from a threat greater than any it has ever known, its multiplayer is now home to Meowster Chief as a Spartan cat ear helmet attachment is now available for purchase in the game's store.

Halo Infinite players who jump into the in-game store will be greeted by the "Cat Lovers" bundle for 1,000 Credits ($8.99 USD) that includes the Faded Blush Epic Armor Coating, the Tabby Rare Charm, the Kat Epic Charm, and the pièce de résistance - the Purrfect Audio Epic Helmet Attachment.

This attachment adds adorable cat ears on the top of any helmet under the Mark VII Armor Core and the internet has, rightfully so, quickly fallen in love with it.

@its_kiingah even thinks it is "the best thing Halo made."

@m4boo_ believes that a full crew of these "cat girls" are even "more horrific than the entirety of flood." Honestly, who are we to disagree?

2 years 4 months ago

Hello, Bertie here, sitting in my armchair next to the fire. Here we are at the end of the year. I hope it holds some good memories for you. I also hope you manage to find some time to yourself, as the year closes, to rest and restore yourself to your dazzling best.

We've had a busy year on Eurogamer. Never is this more apparent than when I'm staring an enormous pile of pieces in the face, hoping to make some kind of list out of them. I like these lists because people miss things in the rush of the year. I miss things. And this season provides a chance to look back and highlight some of the great work gone by.

Part two of the big Eurogamer Christmas reading list

2 years 4 months ago

Welcome to part-two of my end of year reading list - part one was published yesterday. It's a list that highlights the writers we're really lucky to publish on Eurogamer, and without whom, the website would not be the same. I hope you saved some space after yesterday's feast, and remember, if there's a writer who really clicks with you, then return the favour and click on their name next to their author portrait, to go to their author page. There, you'll find many more pieces by them. I hope you enjoy the platter before you.

Sir Clive Sinclair sadly passed away this year, and he leaves a legacy in gaming that will never be forgotten. From calculators to some of the first mass market home computers (that could play games), Dan Whitehead tells Sir Clive Sinclair's remarkable life story.

I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream is free on GOG right now

2 years 4 months ago

The latest free game giveaway in GOG's winter sale is an unexpected one for the festive season, but perhaps a game which captures the feeling of being trapped at a seemingly endless Christmas lunch with awful relatives: I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream. Nothing says 'bad family Christmas' like being tortured for 109 years by a sentient supercomputer which nuked humanity and keeps only five people alive to torment. The 90s point 'n' click adventure game is a grim one (so grim!), but one which does have its fans.

Yoko Taro says NieR series is over, happy holidays!

2 years 4 months ago

In a special Christmas message from three of the NieR series' development stars, creative director Yoko Taro has announced that NieR is over. No more NieR games for us... unless he receives a massive pile of money. Quickly, it becomes clear he's just joshing around. Another classic ruse from the man in the Emil mask, and a subtle hint that they may have something new in the works. Plus, it's just a really delightful video and you should all watch it.

Gothic Remake Gets a Festive Video Wishing Fans Happy Holidays

2 years 4 months ago

‘Tis the season to be jolly, and to celebrate developer Alkimia Interactive and publisher THQ Nordic have dropped a festive video wishing all their fans out there who’re patiently waiting for the upcoming Gothic remake happy holidays.

Go ahead and feast your eyes on said clip down below:

As you can see in the footage above, the cheery new video features a bunch of spooky-looking goblins partying it up while sporting christmasy hats. Pretty cute, right?

While the Gothic remake is still currently in the works for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, we unfortunately still don’t have a concrete release date for when it’ll arrive. Presumably, though, there’s a good chance that the much-anticipated fantasy RPG will launch at some point in 2022.

TFI Friday: three indie games to simulate the end of all things

2 years 4 months ago

MERRY CHRISTMAS YA FILTHY ANIMALS! This time of year can be one that feels particularly apocalyptic, as well as, you know, good will to all I guess. If I have to. The indie games I've been playing recently all have a bit of an end-of-the-world flavour to 'em, whether literal or metaphorical or by your own hand, if you feel like it. I dunno, I actually found them strangely relaxing, as a sort of counterpoint to the chaos of my own life during the holiday season. See what you think.
