Editor's blog: I'm leaving Eurogamer at the end of the year

2 years 5 months ago

On 1st January 2008, I made a New Year's resolution. I was a freelance video games journalist at the time, and though I was really enjoying myself, it wasn't quite working out financially. I decided to give myself six months to try to make it work, after which I'd have to have a think about what to do next with my life.

On 2nd January 2008, my friend Ellie Gibson emailed me and asked if I would be interested in applying for a job at Eurogamer. Exactly one month later, I was on the team. I remember thinking I should make life-changing New Year's resolutions more often.

Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse Translation Complete; Winter Release Confirmed

2 years 5 months ago

Muv-Luv publisher anchor provided an update about the localization of the visual novel Muv-Luv Alternative: Total Eclipse.

Translation has been completed and editing is in progress, confirming the winter release that was initially announced. The lack of delays is certainly a rather rare occurrence for the franchise, so fans have reason to celebrate.

If you’re unfamiliar with Total Eclipse, its story is set in Alaska, in a similar timeframe as Muv-Luv Alternative and it’s one of the most broadly known parts of the multifaceted Muv-Luv universe.

Besides the original light novel series from 2007 and the visual novel that is now coming west (launched in 2013 for PS3 and Xbox 360 and in 2014 for PC), it was the subject of the first Muv-Luv anime series, aired in 2012.

You can find the announcement below. The game will release on Steam.

2 years 5 months ago

Today Koei Tecmo released a new trailer of the upcoming JRPG  Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream.

This time around, the trailer introduces Ramizel Erlenmeyer, following the one that showcased Sophie herself, and the one focusing on Plachta.

She’s voiced by Rie Takahashi, whom you may know for her roles as Megumin in KonoSuba, Emilia in Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World, Hu Tao in Genshin Impact, and many more roles.

You can check the video out below, alongside a blurb officially describing Ramizel.

“The mediator for the people living in Erde Wiege.

Everyone depends on her with her cheerful smile and calm nature.

In addition, she has a strong sense of justice and a dynamic personality, which more often than not leads her to fighting monsters with her strength.

She meets Sophie and Plachta, who are alchemists like her, and watches over them as they grow.”

Cyberpunk 2077 Is Having Its First Good Day

Black Friday Deal Still Available: Anker's Oculus Quest 2 Charging Stand is on Sale for Amazon Prime Members

2 years 5 months ago

If you decided to pick up an Oculus Quest 2 for Black Friday this year and you are looking for a way to flaunt your shiny new VR headset, you're in luck. Anker's amazing charging stand is on sale for Black Friday exclusively for those with an active membership to Amazon Prime.

Released nearly a year ago, Anker's product is a certified charging station for Oculus' current flagship VR headset. Normally retailing for around the $100 price, this is one of the rare instances we have seen this product discounted at all. Aside from being used to charge your Quest 2 when the battery is running low, the design also allows the product to double as a display when you're not using the Quest 2 or controllers.

Anker's Quest 2 Charging Dock connects the Oculus Quest 2 using a magnetic USB-C connector and can fully charge your quest two in 2.5 hours. Alongside a place to charge the headset itself, the charging dock also has two spots to place your Touch controllers.

The packaging includes two rechargeable batteries, when placed inside the controllers along with the metallic pins (also included in the charging stand), the charging dock will also charge your Touch controllers, eliminating the need to consistently buy AA batteries.

Disney, Please Use More Than Just Star Wars And Marvel In Games

2 years 5 months ago

When you think of Disney today, there’s a good chance either Star Wars or the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes to mind. That’s not surprising either – it’s the two properties Disney pumps the most time and money into.

In games, it seems as if Disney exclusively pours resources into them – yes, there’s Kingdom Hearts, which has been great for decades but it seems that series is heading into a decidedly less Disney-based future – and it’s a shame because the nearly 100-year-old company has so much to offer to the video game space, both to classic fans and new ones alike. That’s why Disney needs to tap into its history.

Battlefield 2042 is coming together - but it still needs work

2 years 5 months ago

After a pair of entries that saw the Battlefield series revisit World Wars past, Battlefield 2042 is a trip back to the future for EA's premier first-person shooter franchise. Low-tech battles in European locales are out, replaced with massive, highly vertical conflicts in the megacities of the near future. With huge maps, a completely overhauled class system and an intriguing new 'portal' mode, Battlefield 2042 is an undeniably ambitious entry. Is this the next generation in Battlefield action? Perhaps not - it's a cross-gen game at its heart but the scale of combat expands with the move to the new consoles with a doubling of player count - 128 combatants vs last-gen's 64, resulting in absolute mayhem in some scenarios - but can PS5, Series S and Series X handle it? The results are much improved over beta and early access code, but there's still work to do.

Of course, we've seen gigantic player counts before with the battle royale genre routinely breaking past 100 concurrent users, but Battlefield 2042 is different. The sheer density of players here can result in some stunning, extraordinary scenes, particularly in the Breakthrough game mode, where all players fight over a small number of objectives. The carnage is intense and it's safe to say that you won't get scenes like this in Call of Duty's Warzone, for instance - it's completely different as players are too spread out. As the all-out mayhem plays out in front of you, some scenes need to be seen to be believed.

Save £110 off the Razer Huntsman V2 Analog keyboard in the Amazon Black Friday sale

2 years 5 months ago

The Razer Huntsman V2 Analog is the most advanced keyboard from Razer, and for Black Friday 2021, Amazon UK has it for just £139, which is 44 percent off its usual £249.99 price tag. Compared to other Razer keyboards currently on offer, this is easily the best price for a keyboard that ranks among one of Digital Foundry's picks for the best gaming keyboards.

As a premium mechanical keyboard that goes to replacing the Huntsman Elite as Razer's flagship keyboard, the V2 Analog name comes from having unique optical analogue switches, allowing you to customise the actuation of your keys down to the millimetre. Basically, it doesn't just recognise which key has been pressed but how far it has been pressed. This opens up the possibility of using the same key for multiple functions, such as using an analogue key to change between walking and running in a shooter based on how hard you're pressing the key, or the arc and distance you're throwing a grenade. While not all games will necessarily support analogue keys, it's potentially transformative for the games that do, at the very least providing opportunities for new macro inputs.

There's other options in the Basilisk series as well, so you could also opt for the Razer Basilisk X Hyperspeed gaming mouse that's also reduced for a lower price of £28.39. Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl Review – A Lackluster Gem

2 years 5 months ago

I can understand how a developer may feel conflicted when fans of a franchise ask for a game that is both a faithful remake to fuel nostalgia and be a fresh, modern experience. It’s a tough balance. ILCA, the developer of Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, attempted to find this balance, but ultimately ended up playing on the safe side.

The games are a faithful remake, for better or for worse. If you cried “Sinnoh confirmed!” all these years wanting a true remake with a fresh coat of paint and quality of life improvements, you got your wish.

If you were hoping that ILCA would have greater ambition when developing a Pokemon game than Game Freak has had in the past few generations, I’m sorry to say that Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl don’t quite reach those heights.

Returnal DLC Possibly Being Teased by Developer Housemarque

2 years 5 months ago

An image shared from Returnal's developer Housemarque on Twitter has fans speculating that a DLC announcement may be on the way.

Housemarque tweeted the mysterious image on the morning of November 26 alongside the text, "Atropos...? #Returnal." For those unaware, Atropos is the planet where Returnal takes place.

This caught the attention of many across the internet, as it doesn't appear to be anything found in the base game of Returnal. Additionally, since Atropos has a question mark after it, it's possible this could be a whole new world Selene (or another character?) has to explore. It also could be that a catastrophic event has done something drastic to Atropos to cause Selene to question where she is.

Following the Tweet, Housemarque senior narrative designer Eevi Korhonen Quote Tweeted the mysterious post, saying, "We filmed something really amazing today. Hope we get to share more soon!"

The Best Halo Infinite Multiplayer Tips I've Learned From Watching TikTok

2 years 5 months ago

halo infinite multiplayer tips

I’ve played a lot of Halo Infinite since its free-to-play multiplayer suite launched during the Xbox 20th Anniversary Celebration last week. Coincidentally, I’ve also watched way too much TikTok since then. It’s a real problem I’m dealing with right now. In-between the cooking tutorials and cursed comedy sketches populating my For You page, I’ve stumbled upon several Halo Infinite multiplayer tips that positively affected my knowledge and skill.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving – and being the generous person I am – I’d like to give back to the gaming community by sharing a curated list of the best videos I’ve watched while doom-scrolling this hellscape of a social media app.

Win Stockpile Matches Quickly With The Razorback:

Stockpile is an objective-focused mode introduced in Halo Infinite that requires each team to fight for a limited quantity of Power Seeds that they must install in their base generator. This Big Team Battle mode is hectic, but a little team cooperation goes a long way. My friends and I typically form an assembly line of sorts by throwing the contested deliverables across the map to each other in a chaotic-but-humorous fashion. However, TikTok user lord_shacks spotlights a much better strategy that employs the warthog’s turretless cousin, the Razorback.

Samsung's Odyssey G7 is the must-buy Black Friday monitor deal

2 years 5 months ago

The Samsung Odyssey G7 is my new favourite monitor. I picked up one myself this summer, and it's perfect for me. The 1440p resolution provides plenty of detail in games, the deep blacks and high brightness of the VA panel make night scenes stunning and give HDR highlights punch, and the 240Hz refresh rate is blissfully smooth for competitive games like CS:GO or Forza.

That's why I'm selecting the Odyssey G7 as our favourite Black Friday monitor deal, as the 27-inch G7 is down to $500 at Amazon US (from $700) and £429 on Amazon UK (from £550). Those are incredible prices - and in fact, they're the lowest prices we've ever seen for this model by a massive margin.

Total War: Warhammer III Gameplay Trailer Shows Nurgle vs Slaanesh Battle

2 years 5 months ago

Today Sega and Creative Assembly released another brand new trailer of the upcoming strategy game Total War: Warhammer III.

This trailer showcases the gameplay of the Nurgle chaos faction, providing an even better look at the units compared to the previous CGI cinematic trailer and the second in-engine trailer.

We also take a look at the forces of Slaanesh, but they pretty much serve only as victims for the pestilent followers of Nurgle.

You can check it out below, alongside a rundown of the Nurgle faction from Creative Assembly.

Ku’gath Plaguefather – Nurgle Legendary Lord

Ku’gath Plaguefather, the Rotting Poxmaker, is the most favoured of Nurgle’s chosen. Fascinated by the breeding of new contagions, he frequently forays into the mortal realms to test fresh creations on the battlefield, driven by a desire to concoct the perfect plague capable of infecting even the gods themselves.

Our favourite portable SSD, Samsung's T7 1TB, is just $110 after a 35% discount

2 years 5 months ago

An external SSD is one of the most versatile and useful things you can have, and few can match the Samsung T7. One of our favourite portable drives here at Digital Foundry, it's our go-to recommendation for anyone wanting a fast, convenient way to transfer data. Thanks to some amazing discounts out there, our US readers can grab this drive for 35 percent off its original price. That's $110 on Amazon for the 1TB model, down from its usual price of $170. You can pick it up in either grey, blue or red.

The Samsung T7 uses USB 3.2 Gen 2 connectivity through a USB-C port and blazing fast storage speeds. It is capable of achieving up to 1050MB/s transfer speeds, making it one of the fastest USB drives on the market. What makes the T7 particularly appealing are its size and build quality. The drive is quite small, about the size of a credit card, and also very light. And despite that, it is built really well, with a solid aluminium chassis that feels as good as it looks.

Get the SteelSeries Arctis 7 wireless headset for just £109 from Amazon UK this Black Friday

2 years 5 months ago

The SteelSeries Arctis series headsets are one of the best wireless gaming headsets around - indeed Eurogamer, rates the latest Arctis 7P and 7X models as the best wireless headsets in 2021. The original Arctis 7 model that debuted in 2019 is however just as fantastic an option, all the more so that it's currently on sale for £109 from Amazon UK, down by just over 30 percent from its original RRP of £159.99.

It should be noted that this wireless headset isn't compatible with Xbox consoles (you will need the newer 7X model instead), but it is perfectly compatible with both PlayStation 4 and 5. As its 2.4G lossless connection is achieved via a USB adaptor, this can also be plugged to be compatible with PC as well as Nintendo Switch in docked mode. If you need more options, the Arctis 7 fortunately can also work in wired mode with a 3.5mm cable, which you may prefer if you're listening to music.

Sports Games Are Stuck In A Rut

2 years 5 months ago

If you buy the yearly iteration of your favorite sports video game, chances are you haven’t had much to cheer about the last few years. To put it bluntly, the genre is struggling, and even the new console generation hasn’t been the answer to rejuvenating it. Take just this year, for example. Metacritic scores are anything but impressive for the biggest sports around. Madden NFL 22 earned an abysmal 60, NHL 22, which promised to change its metagame, disappointed with a 74. NBA 2K has largely been the franchise to beat, but NBA 2K22 only holds a 76, some of the lowest marks the series has seen in years. FIFA 22 and MLB: The Show 21 earned the highest averages, around 78, but it’s telling that none of these franchises could even crack the 80 mark.

This downward trend has been going for some time now, and I’ve grown irritated seeing modes largely untouched and similar technical errors carrying over year to year. It’s like watching your favorite sports team when they’re in a slump. How long do you wait it out and watch the continual losses pile up before you just walk away and hope next season fares better?
