BioWare explains why the Mass Effect movie fell by the wayside

2 years 10 months ago

There was once a Mass Effect movie in the works. In 2010 EA sold off the film rights to Legendary Pictures, with then BioWare bosses Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk set to work as executive producers alongside former Mass Effect chief Casey Hudson. But it failed to materialise. Why?

In a recent interview with Business Insider, BioWare lead writer Mac Walters explained what happened.

"It felt like we were always fighting the IP," he said. "What story are we going to tell in 90 to 120 minutes? Are we going to do it justice?"

Activision has defeated WWE wrestler Booker T in a Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 likeness lawsuit.

Booker T. Huffman claimed unlicensed use of his character 'G.I. Bro' with the character 'Prophet' from Treyarch's Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 in a lawsuit filed in February 2019.

The lawsuit revolved around a poster Booker T commissioned and used to promote his 2015 comic, G.I. Bro and the Dragon of Death. The comic stars a "special operations hero called G.I. Bro". Prophet, from 2018's Black Ops 4, is a "cybernetically enhanced soldier". The image below compares the two characters:

The Halo TV show will reportedly lose its showrunner after season one is over.

Variety reports lead showrunner Steven Kane will not return, should the show get picked up for a second season. Variety suggests a second season "seems likely... given the high-profile nature of the underlying IP and the high level of investment on ViacomCBS' part".

Kane has been in Budapest, where production of the Halo TV show is ongoing, for the past two years and wants to return to the states for "personal reasons".

Forget GoldenEye, someone made a Greggs in Far Cry 5

2 years 10 months ago

Modders do incredible things with the video games we love. They build expansion-sized add-ons, issue performance fixes, and come up with the weird and wonderful to extend the life of games long since left behind by their original creators.

And then there's this, a Greggs in Far Cry 5.

Edinburgh-based artist Mojo Swoptops recreated our nation's sandwich shop in fine detail. It's got a Greggs-looking counter flanked not by fridges stuffed with sparsely-filled sandwiches but shelving units packed with fruit. The Greggs sign is pretty close, though.

Final Fantasy 14: examining the complete saga - right up to its PS5 debut

2 years 10 months ago

Final Fantasy 14 is a game with a rich and storied history, spreading back across the generations to the PlayStation 3 era - and before that, to a 2010 PC release. Its status as an MMO separates it from Square-Enix's usual Final Fantasy offerings, but this game is very much worthy of its mainline series entry status. Today, we can play Final Fantasy 14 natively on PlayStation 5, but getting to the point of having a quality play experience on consoles seemed impossible when it first released, to the point where the game was even temporarily taken out of service. All of which brings us on to Digital Foundry video we're presenting today. Yes, you get to learn about Final Fantasy 14 on PS5 - and how it stacks up against PS4 and PS4 Pro offerings - but we go further, revisiting its misguided beginnings, its rebirth and its various expansions over the years.

We're very excited about this Final Fantasy 14 coverage. Marc 'Try4ce' Duddleson works on the excellent My Life in Gaming YouTube channel and occasionally guests on Digital Foundry - and despite not being a huge MMO fan, he absolutely loves Final Fantasy 14, having the authentic voice needed to assess the game as it is today and how it has evolved over the years. And in approaching this project, it's also been fascinating for the DF team to see how an experienced video producer gets to grip with our performance analysis tools and adapts the presentation to suit his vision for the project in hand.

Following Mass Effect Legendary Edition, fans are reappraising Mass Effect Andromeda

2 years 10 months ago

Mass Effect Legendary Edition has certainly done the trick: it's rekindled a love of BioWare's original trilogy years after the games came out. But it's not just Mass Effect 1, 2 and 3 that are being judged once again. Fans are reappraising Mass Effect Andromeda, too.

2017's Mass Effect Andromeda endured a torrid time upon release, with clips of dialogue scenes descending into meme status. There were other areas of the game that came under fire, including its limited character creator, bugs and animation quirks.

Beyond that, though, Andromeda's missions, storyline and characters failed to set the world on fire. Without Commander Shepard, the Normandy and the original trilogy's cast of much-loved characters, Andromeda set out for a new galaxy, a new premise and new party members. I think it's fair to say it didn't stick the landing. Some thought the game was just okay, others considered it outright awful. Either way, Andromeda flopped and BioWare soon moved on, leaving it sequel-less.

Lost Judgment for PS5, Xbox Series X & More Introduces Kazuki Soma & His Actor In English Video

2 years 10 months ago

Today Sega released another video in English of a series dedicated to the characters of Judgment sequel Lost Judgment.

This time around it’s all about Kazuki Soma and his actor Hiroshi Tamaki, showcasing cutscenes and a presentation by Tamaki-san himself.

Kazuki Soma is the leader of an “hangure” gang named “RK” described as “underground thugs” in the video, but the concept is a bit more complex.

Hangure gangs aren’t exactly random thugs, as much as organized groups that usually fill the power vacuum left by the Yakuza.

Soma himself used to be a member of the Tojo Clan and a candidate for leadership before the group was disbanded, and his gang has made a name for itself in the struggle for control of the underworld in Kamurocho.

“Once a member of a disbanded yakuza organization, Soma takes the opportunity to unite Kamurocho’s underground into a network of thugs. What he intends to do with this power is not immediately clear.”

Lost Judgment releases globally on Sept. 24 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, & Xbox One.

Granblue Fantasy Versus Reveals Seox as Playable Character; More Coming as Game Shipped 500,000 Copies

2 years 10 months ago

Today, during the Rage GBVS 2021 summer tournament, Cygames announced the last character of the Granblue Fantasy Versus character pass 2, and it’s Seox.

During the same event we also learned that the game passed 500,000 shipments worldwide.

The package, which will be included in the season pass or sold separately for $6.99, will include the following:

  • Playable character “Seox”
  • 1 Lobby Avatar
  • 1 Star Character Icon
  • 2 additional RPG Mode Quests

Perhaps even bigger news is that DLC support for the game won’t end when Seox releases on July 12, but more characters will be released, with the next to be revealed in August.

“Seox, sixth of the Eternals and master of the claw, strikes down his opponents with unrivaled speed. Marred by fate, he dons many masks—both physical and emotional—to obscure his true feelings. But this won’t stop him from pressing forward on his journey of atonement. He would venture to the ends of the skies, so long as he is one day able to reunite with the person he holds dear.”

Microsoft Flight Simulator Yak-18T, Kraków, & Dillingham Airports Released; Shanghai & Prague Get New Screenshots

2 years 10 months ago

Third-party developers had quite a few new releases and assets of new add-ons for Microsoft Flight Simulator to share today.

Nemeth Designs released a brand new aircraft, the Yakovlev Yak-8T for those interested in some healthy Soviet-era radial power.

It’s available at the developer’s own store for $19.49.

Below you can check out a lot of images and a product description.

“It is widely used as a sport aerobatic airplane both inside and outside the former USSR. It is powered by a 268-298 kW (360-400 hp) Vedeneyev M14P radial engine. Compared with other four-seat light aircraft the Yak-18T is only a little wider and longer but it is much heavier and is equipped with a considerably more powerful engine. The Yak-18T has strong construction, aerobatic capability and responsive handling characteristics and its performance and handling capabilities far exceed its western counterparts. When performing aerobatics, the solid airframe is rated to withstand G-loads from +6G down to -3G.

The Yak-18T was designed with versatility in mind so it can land on paved and unpaved surfaces, take off from noticeably short fields and it’s landing capability allows easy access to shorter runways. Its rate of climb is between 1000 and 2000 feet per minute. It is a big, aerobatic capable, four-seater with retractable landing gears that can be found throughout the Eastern Bloc countries working as trainer, transport, air-ambulance aircraft, aerial photography platform, pipeline patroller and more.”

The Community Spotlight 2021.06.26

2 years 10 months ago

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight! I, @zombiepie, am once again honored to be your host as we look back and enjoy the best user-created works from the previous week. Whelp, we certainly survived E3 2021. The event has come and gone and despite all of the digital-only weirdness, it mostly succeeded in what it set out to do. It got people talking about video games and provided a handful of major companies a platform to showcase their best stuff. It was certainly awkward at time, but I would take that awkwardness over not having any form of E3. The other big highlight of the week was Giant Bomb's collaboration with GameSpot to raise money for the AbleGamers Charity. Many thanks for those who were able to donate, and many more thanks to RedVentures chipping in to help the event get past its fundraising goal, but more on that in a little bit. With all of that in mind, let's jump into the site-related housekeeping!
