Twelve Minutes Gets A "Film" Poster

2 years 10 months ago

Twelve Minutes, the upcoming interactive thriller about a man stuck in a time loop published by Annapurna Interactive, got an official "film" poster. Shared on the Twelve Minutes Website, the poster was designed by Mocean and was inspired by the films that influenced the game's director Luis Antonio.

"As you might know, I’m a pretty big movie fan and Twelve Minutes has been inspired by the work of the masters that crystallized the psychological thriller genre. Hitchcock, Kubrick, and Fincher to name a few," Antonio said. "These creators have a way of wielding the visual language to tell stories on several different levels. With their movies, the composition and mise en scene have as important of a rule in revealing story and character as the words that are coming out of the actors’ mouths."

Twelve Minutes stars several major Hollywood actors

Antonio went on to say that he wanted Twelve Minutes to have a marketing campaign that felt in line with films of that genre. He said that the poster was designed to fit with the narratives and themes of the game as well as be cool enough to hang on your wall.

Goodwill Auctions Off Super-Rare Atari Game For Over $10,000

2 years 10 months ago

One person's trash is another person's treasure, and Goodwill North Central Texas certainly demonstrated that when an employee discovered an extremely rare video game in its inventory. The organization managed to sell the game on its website for more than $10,000, with the proceeds going toward free job placement and training for underprivileged individuals.

E-commerce item processor Alex Juarez explained in a video on GoodwillNCT's YouTube channel (via Kotaku) that he and his father had watched videos on expensive old video games, and he immediately recognized the Atari 2600 game Air Raid when he was going through the inventory.

It became the highest-selling single-piece item the organization ever had after it was put online for auction. It ran for a week, and the final price was over $10,500. What's funny is that when Juarez is showing off the box of Atari games he found Air Raid in, you can also see E.T., which was such an infamous failure that Atari ended up burying unsold copies in New Mexico. It would be more than 30 years before those were eventually dug up for the Atari: Game Over documentary.

GoldenEye 007 Recreation In Far Cry 5 Removed Following Copyright Takedown

2 years 10 months ago

The lovingly crafted recreation of the Nintendo 64's GoldenEye 007 in Far Cry 5 has been removed by Ubisoft, reportedly at the behest of James Bond rights-holder MGM. The news was confirmed by its creator, a YouTuber by the name of Krollywood, as well as Ubisoft itself, although there might still be a way that it eventually finds its way back online for download.

Krollywood spent over three years recreating the popular shooter using the level-building tools provided within Far Cry 5. The entire game is playable, with accurate level layouts and even a few familiar easter eggs thrown in for fans to enjoy again. Krollywood says he was contacted by Ubisoft to inform him that all the levels were being taken down following a copyright infringement claim by MGM (which was recently purchased by Amazon.)

Ubisoft released its own statement (courtesy of Kotaku) regarding the removal of the levels but didn't specifically name MGM as the reason.

Yacht Club Games Celebrates Shovel Knight's Birthday By Listing All 49 Of His Cameos

2 years 10 months ago

Shovel Knight recently turned seven years old, and his creators at Yacht Club Games celebrated the occasion by looking back not at his own game, but at the numerous cameos he's made since his debut. We haven't seen ubiquity like this outside of plumbers and hedgehogs.

The blog post at Yacht Club Games' website runs down every single time Shovel Knight or one of his compatriots have appeared in other games, from well-known cameos in games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Fall Guys to lesser-known indie titles like Armillo and Creepy Castle. There's even console-specific mentions, including how the Shovel Knight amiibo figures activate power-ups in the Nintendo Switch version of Cyber Shadow.

The blog contains videos and pictures of each of the Shovel Knight crew's cameos, including official trailers and gameplay segments. A full list of every cameo Yacht Club mentioned in the blog is below.

Pokemon Sword And Shield Shiny Grapploct Event Now Live Until June 27

2 years 10 months ago

A new Max Raid event is underway right now in Pokemon Sword and Shield. This time, tentacled Pokemon are appearing more frequently in Max Raid dens in both games, including Shiny Grapploct. You'll need to act quickly if you want to catch one, however, as the event only runs until June 27.

Throughout the event, you'll be more likely to encounter Grapploct, Malamar, Octillery, and their pre-evolved forms in Max Raid dens across the Wild Area, Isle of Armor, and Crown Tundra. As previously mentioned, you'll also have a chance to find Shiny Grapploct in five-star Max Raids. This variant will be much rarer, however, so you'll need to be persistent and check Raids often if you're hoping to catch one.

Some of the featured Pokemon in Sword and Shield's newest event

The new Max Raid event runs until 4:59 PM PT / 7:59 PM ET / 11:59 PM UTC on Sunday, June 27, giving you only a few days to participate. Before the featured Pokemon can begin appearing in your game, you'll first need to refresh your Max Raid dens. You can do so either by connecting the game online or by selecting Get the Wild Area News from the Mystery Gift menu.

Reconnecting with the way most people actually play games

2 years 10 months ago

Last year, I encountered an urban legend of videogaming for the first time, the mythical Big November. November, people had told me for years, is the busiest time of the year for gaming, a time when every publisher scrambles to release something that you, or your children, then inevitably put on the Christmas wish lists to spend the cold months inside with. Finally, after years of hearing about Big November like Nessie from the depths, I experienced it. I experienced the start of gaming season in a year in which time is essentially meaningless. It led to me playing a lot of games in rapid succession, and I didn't like it. Yet I often see it suggested that for many people, this is the done thing.

Because two new consoles released and those tend to sell better if you simultaneously offer people some games to play on them, I played a lot of games in the span of one week, and so did my colleagues. I saw talk about a game for less than a week before people moved on to the next one, and something that released two weeks ago impossibly felt like old news already. I saw people make lists of all the games coming out in the span of a week that they wanted to get their hands on. "Get that in before Cyberpunk" was a phrase I heard often.
