Square Says Sike

2 years 11 months ago

Massively multiplayer online role-playing game Dragon Quest X launched on the Wii all the way back in 2012. Since then, it’s appeared on eight more platforms and received several substantial expansions, but Square Enix has never seen fit to release it in the west. And it doesn’t seem like that’s going to change…

Total War: Three Kingdoms gets one more substantial patch as team moves on to new game

2 years 11 months ago

Creative Assembly has announced a big patch for Total War: Three Kingdoms, which will also be the last big one it gets. Patch 1.7.1 will be the end of the content rollout for Three Kingdoms, but Creative Assembly isn't done with the setting just yet.

In a new Dev Diary today, Creative Assembly confirms the team is transitioning to another project based on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. More will be shared in the future, but the team said that they will be increasing their focus on the novel's cast of characters and individual narratives.

Today's 1.7.1 patch contains a number of community-requested fixes, as well as changes to the campaign map and additional improvements. You can find the full patch notes here.

It seems like Three Kingdoms was a solid entry in the Total War series, and it definitely garnered a good response from fans. While the sun may be setting on one entry, Creative Assembly seems to have found some solid ground in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Here's 14 minutes of gorgeous Horizon Forbidden West gameplay on PlayStation 5

2 years 11 months ago

Just as it promised, Sony has pulled back the veil on Guerrilla Games' highly anticipated Horizon Forbidden West, sharing 14 minutes of gorgeous gameplay running on PlayStation 5.

As you can see in the video below, it's an immediate feast for the eyes, beginning as Aloy scrambles through dense jungle foliage before stumbling out onto a oceanside settlement, all sandy beaches, deep blue water, and vast rock spires on the horizon, shrouded in clouds. These, Guerrilla later confirms, are the remnants of San Francisco, millennia into the future, and it's here that Aloy encounters machine-riding raiders, immediately embarking on some nimble combat, firing arrows and hurtling acrobatically around the environment to escape their attack.

This initial sequence ends beneath the waves as Aloy swims through gorgeous coral reefs, kelp, and exotic fauna, fighting the current as she goes. Eventually she reaches dry land and encounters the raiders once more, this time choosing to take a more stealthy approach as she attempts to liberate her kidnapped friend.

Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown's netcode is reportedly based on Final Showdown's

2 years 11 months ago

While Sega offered a variety of details pertaining to its upcoming release Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown yesterday, one aspect of the game went mysteriously unspoken: the all-important netcode. The silence has been deafening, as Ultimate Showdown is a title that has been literally designed specifically for competition, thus a stable online experience is a must.

In an email to Kotaku, Sega has stated that Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown will use delay-based netcode technology adapted from 2012 release Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown, essentially using decade-plus-old technology to run the remake in an online capacity. The news has caused Virtua Spit-Takes from fans, who were hoping for more precise tech — such as the much-vaunted "rollback" — to make an appearance. Honestly, I wasn't expecting rollback netcode at all, but I was at least expecting freshly built technology.

Fortnite adds character from Mistborn book series

2 years 11 months ago

Fortnite's latest crossover is something nobody expected - well, except perhaps the author of the Mistborn book series, Brandon Sanderson.

Mistborn character Kelsier became a Fortnite character last night, available via the Item Shop complete with in-game artwork and accessories.

Fortnite has crossed over with dozens of comics, popstars, film and TV characters in the past. Kelsier, however, is the game's first novel tie-in.

Sega mentions Sonic Rangers in its own press release

2 years 11 months ago

During Sonic's 30th anniversary livestream, Sega teased a new Sonic game from Sonic Team due out at some point in 2022.

Without naming the game, Sega revealed this new Sonic game is coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. The brisk accompanying trailer didn't show anything beyond the hedgehog running through a forest, and a mysterious symbol:

Sonic fans soon poked around the trailer's innards on the hunt for clues. Thankfully, Sega itself stepped in with a press release that names the game.

Beyond NRG review: how I tried giving up coffee for a gaming energy drink

2 years 11 months ago

I've been lucky enough to test out a bunch of weird and wonderful tech, but I don't always get a chance to share my discoveries in a full review or roundup. That's why this column exists, to highlight bits of tech that might not fit elsewhere but nonetheless deserve a mention. Enjoy!

I'm gonna warn you now - this is a weird one. Normally this semi-regular column looks at weird tech, but this time we're stretching the usual gaming-adjacent space as we examine two oddities: the Flexispot Desk Bike and the Beyond NRG gaming drink. Both sound laughable at first blush, but a surprising amount of thought has gone into fleshing out these products into something that might be genuinely valuable to you - whether you're after a way to stay fit while gaming or maximise your K/D by any means necessary. Let's take a look, starting with that seriously strange desk and bike hybrid.

Cyberpunk 2077 gets new game director

2 years 11 months ago

Cyberpunk 2077 has a new game director - and it's former creative director Gabriel Amatangelo.

Amatangelo joined CD Projekt back in January 2020, and will now take over from former game director Adam Badowski. According to a report by GamesIndustry.biz, Badowski will now focus on other leadership duties within CD Projekt, including the company's new "strategic development framework" that will see the Cyberpunk and Witcher brands developed in parallel.

Before becoming a creative director for Cyberpunk 2077, Amatangelo also worked as a design director on Dragon Age: Inquisition DLC, and lead designer on several expansions for Star Wars: The Old Republic. Cyberpunk 2077's roadmap indicates that we should see several free DLCs for the game over the next year, and Amatangelo certainly has some experience in this area.

Elite Dangerous: Odyssey review

2 years 11 months ago

Here she comes, limping into starport with her thrusters spluttering, smoke billowing from her exhaust, sparks leaping from the jump drive. No, I'm not describing my spaceship as part of the universal game review opening in which I tell a tiny story to ease you into things. I am using blunt metaphor to describe Elite Dangerous: Odyssey itself, the leggy new expandopack that adds first-person exploration and gunfire to Elite's space sim. Although she's a tough machine with lots of promise, her internal electronics have a serious case of gremlins. Look, she's exploded.

Far Cry 6 footage sneaks out ahead of tonight’s reveal

2 years 11 months ago

Ubisoft's tradition having a big announcement being leaked ahead of time has been celebrated by Far Cry 6 today. While we’ve been waiting on tonight’s reveal stream, the basic elements of what they were going to show popped up on YouTube earlier before suffering from the inevitable copyright strike. I managed to watch it before it was taken down. Fair warning: the rest of this post is absolutely heaving with spoilers.

New Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night game referenced in financial report

2 years 11 months ago

A new financial report from holding company Digital Bros. makes brief mention of a possible sequel to 505 Games' gothic adventure Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, with development of the new title apparently already underway.

Page 25 of the report, (which you can check out right here), celebrates the success of Koji Igarashi's mythical metroidvania, which launched on PS4, PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in the summer of 2019, before receiving a mobile port last winter. Among the plaudits listed — including sales past the one million mark — Digital Bros. notes that a "second version is in development".

It has to be said that "second version" is somewhat odd terminology over simply saying "sequel", so who knows quite what is being referenced with this statement. Bloodstained found a dedicated audience of lost Castlevania fans upon launch, with Shardbinder Miriam winning the hearts of many players worldwide. I am absolutely up for a potential Bloodstained sequel. With E3 season on the horizon, perhaps the details will become a little clearer in the coming weeks and months.

Company of Heroes 2 and expansion Ardennes Assault free to download and keep forever on Steam

2 years 11 months ago

Company of Heroes 2 and Ardennes Assault are free to download and keep forever on Steam this weekend.

Relic's superb World War 2 real-time strategy game and its standalone single-player campaign are free to download and keep via Steam now until 3rd June 2021.

2013's Company of Heroes 2 is widely regarded as one of the best RTS games around. "While Company of Heroes 2 sometimes makes you feel like you're fighting the game as well as the enemy, if you take time to understand the systems at work beneath the carnage and pick and choose your battles wisely, you will ultimately be rewarded by a deep and enjoyable RTS," wrote Stace Harman in Eurogamer's Company of Heroes 2 review.
