Nintendo Switch Pro reveal expected before E3

2 years 11 months ago

Nintendo's long-awaited Switch upgrade is expected to be shown ahead of E3 2021, according to a report published by Bloomberg [paywall] today and Eurogamer's own sources.

I understand this is to ensure third-parties working on games which support the upgraded Switch are free to announce these projects at E3, and before Nintendo's own digital showcase later in that week.

(Nintendo's event has yet to be formally dated but is currently set to slot in after other publishers towards the end of E3, though of course dates can still shift.)

Dragon Quest 12 takes the long-running RPG series down a darker path

2 years 11 months ago

Dragon Quest celebrated its 35th anniversary in some style in the early hours of this morning, with a livestream from Japan heralding the announcement of a string of new entries and spin-offs for the much-loved RPG series.

Heading the lot was Dragon Quest 12, which will be the first mainline entry since 2017. Not much was shown beyond a brief trailer revealing a logo - though that logo did reveal a turn towards dark fantasy, and what series' creator dubbed a Dragon Quest 'for adults'. It's being primed for a simultaneous worldwide release - in what would be a first for a mainline entry - though the timing has yet to be revealed, while no platforms have been announced just yet.

Elsewhere, a remake of Dragon Quest 3 was announced, taking on the 2D/3D stylings of the likes of Octopath Traveler - and being ushered into existence by Octopath Traveler producer Masaaki Hayasaka. Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D, as it's somewhat clumsily called at present, again has no release date or confirmed platforms, though it is also slated for a worldwide simultaneous release and we were afforded a look at it in action.

PUBG is adding respawns, footballs in the lobbies, and a gun you can't reload

2 years 11 months ago

I never got into PUBG. I didn’t enjoy putting all that time and effort into the game only to die once and be returned to the main menu. That’s why I spend my battle royale funtimes in Warzone, where I can at least punch my way back into the game. But in Playerunknown's Battlegrounds’s 2021 roadmap, they’ve announced a new map that will allow players to respawn. Depending on the turnaround time, I might just have to get back into Plunkbat.

PlayStation exclusive Uncharted 4 is coming to PC

2 years 11 months ago

Though there’s no trailer, no screens, and no countdown to whet our appetite, it looks like PlayStation perennial Uncharted 4: A Thief's End has been stealth announced for PC. The console’s favourite stumbly treasure hunter will follow Days Gone and Horizon Zero Dawn to the PC promised land, as revealed in the cold, harsh glare of a Sony investor report.

Nvidia are teasing new RTX 30 GPUs for May 31st

2 years 11 months ago

Nvidia are asking people to "Get ready" for a big announcement happening on May 31st. The graphics card maker released a short teaser clip on their GeForce Twitter account last night, showing what appears to be a pool of liquid metal running through a kind of black crystalline landscape. It could literally be anything, but the internet seem convinced it's heralding the announcement of their much rumoured RTX 3070 Ti and RTX 3080 Ti GPUs.

The top 10 games on PC in June

2 years 11 months ago

Summer has never been the hottest season for video games. AAA releases are often few and far between when the weather gets hotter, as marketing plans are put in place for big end-of-year launches. However – whether COVID-related or something else entirely – this summer seems even more sparse than usual.

Although, a lack of bigger games does put a greater spotlight on indie games, of course, and there are more than a few out in June that look like they could surprise. So, fingers crossed these games will deliver on their promise.

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End is reportedly headed to PC

2 years 11 months ago

It looks like the next PlayStation exclusive in-line for a PC port will be Naughty Dog's rock-climbing, treasure-hunting, neck-snapping adventure Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, which originally launched on PS4 back in May 2016. Yes, it was that long ago.

The whispers began after the third-person adventure was name-checked in a Sony Investor Day Presentation. As you can see in the linked document, a slide was shown noting Sony had more PC ports planned, specifically referencing Uncharted 4 alongside recent PC arrival Days Gone. Sony itself is yet to publicly announce the port, but does have a Horizon-themed State of Play event scheduled for later today, so it's not impossible confirmation might be made of Uncharted's port status.

Detailing the twilight days of Nathan Drake's adventures, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End sees Drake — alongside long-time companions Sully and Elena — don the hiking boots for one last death-defying journey into lost civilizations' past. The sequel was universally acclaimed by press for its gorgeous art design, frenetic action, and worthy conclusion to the engaging story of Drake and his pals. Uncharted 4 would become one of the PS4's best-selling titles, having shifted over 15 million copies to date.

EA made $1.62bn from Ultimate Team in its last financial year

2 years 11 months ago

We know EA makes millions of dollars from Ultimate Team, but now we have a figure: $1.62bn.

That's the eye-watering amount EA made during its 2021 financial year from Ultimate Team modes across its sports games.

But - and this won't come as a surprise to anyone - FIFA Ultimate Team made the bulk of that money. Or, as EA recently put it in a regulatory financial document, "a substantial portion".

Here's Assassin's Creed Valhalla for £30 on all consoles

2 years 11 months ago

Ubisoft's latest open-world opus Assassin's Creed Valhalla is now down to just £30 on all consoles at Amazon UK.

The near 100-hour epic was dubbed “a saga for the ages” in Tom's Assassin's Creed Valhalla review. Many must've agreed as the game can also boast the biggest launch in the history of the series. Makes sense, really, as it arrived just in time for the launch of the PS5 and Series X as a cross-gen release.

Despite bouncing off Origins I've definitely been tempted to pick it up for myself after all the positive buzz - and at this price, I may finally be ready to sharpen my axe.

Beyond FMV: the remarkable story of Erica

2 years 11 months ago

There's a stigma attached to full-motion video games. They're known for hammy acting and titillation: an image they haven't been able to shake since the 90s, thanks to infamous games like Night Trap. A few companies still make them but they tend to be made on a budget, so they fly just under the radar, not quite meeting a threshold to get excited about.

But Erica was different. It had a classiness to it, and a refinement. It was beautifully shot, the acting was believable, and it was tense. And it felt different. In Erica, you could interact with the world in a more engaging way than with other FMV games. Those games tend to keep you standing back from the action, feeling as though you're only ever choosing a film clip to watch next. But Erica pulled you in. It let you touch the world, pulling ribbons to open presents, pushing pencils across paper to draw, pressing keys to play a piano. Little things, but many things, always reinforcing that you were in this world and it was responding to you.

And Erica was glossy. It had the sheen of PlayStation exclusivity and all the buzz that came with it, though it has since been released on tablets and phones, and this week on Steam. In other words, Erica seemed like a high profile revival of FMV. But as I was surprised to find out this week, it was never about that. The makers of the game don't even like FMV. Erica wasn't about bringing it back, it was about creating something new.

Sony seemingly reveals Uncharted 4 is coming to PC in an investor relations document

2 years 11 months ago

Sony has seemingly revealed Uncharted 4 is coming to PC.

In a document published as part of Sony's Investor Relations day, Sony mentions Uncharted 4 under "more PC releases planned" (it's on page 26).

Sony is putting more of its PlayStation 4 games on PC. It's already released Guerrilla's Horizon: Zero Dawn on PC and, most recently, Sony Bend's Days Gone. It makes sense that Naughty Dog's five-year-old adventure game would be part of Sony's PC push.

Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance Reveals Joe Manganiello As Utaar

2 years 11 months ago

Actor Joe Manganiello, arguably most known for his roles in True Blood and Justice League, is an actor known for his neverending love for Dungeons & Dragons. Because of that love and his various public D&D campaigns, it should be of no surprise that he is confirmed to have a role in the upcoming Dark Alliance game from Tuque Games.

The studio posted up a new video clip on the game's official Twitter account of the Kelvin descendant, Utaar Kelvinson. With the simple caption of, "This guy's voice sounds so familiar...," fans were quick to realize who exactly was voicing the frost giant.

This isn't the actor's first run with Dungeons & Dragons as a professional, not just a player. He added his writing talents to that of Baldur's Gate: Descent Into Avernus, which made its debut in 2019.

Dragon Quest III: HD-2D Remake And Dragon Quest Keshi Keshi Revealed

2 years 11 months ago

In addition to a brand new Dragon Quest game announced with Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate, Square Enix also confirmed that Dragon Quest III was getting an HD-2D remake and info on a brand new (free) mobile game with Keshi Keshi.

During a recent live stream to celebrate the franchise's 35th anniversary, Square Enix revealed a few new experiences within the realm of Dragon Quest. Among them being a remake of the beloved Dragon Quest III. While details are scarce, the company did confirm an Octopath Traveler-esque experience, giving the upcoming release a more classic 2D feel that balances out the newness that players will experience with The Flames of Fate.

Also announced in the stream was Dragon Quest Keshi Keshi, a free-to-play mobile puzzle game that will be available for both iOS and Android users. This experience will offer familiar faces, old foes, and items that long-time fans will instantly recognize. And the need to erase graffiti, but you can see more of that in the trailer below.

Dragon Quest XII: The Flames Of Fate Announced, A Darker Turn For The Series

2 years 11 months ago

A late-night showcase for those in the West from Square Enix Japan revealed a few new Dragon Quest experiences including that of Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate. The next mainline RPG in the long-running series has been revealed to celebrate the franchise's 35th anniversary (35?! How time flies!) and it shows off a much darker tone for the beloved RPG series.

Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate is the first main entry into the Dragon Quest franchise since 2017. The upcoming title will house a ton of player agency, rooted in choices made throughout this adventure that will branch out for the usual mode of storytelling that these games are known for. Yuji Horii, the creator of Dragon Quest, confirmed that the team is not getting rid of commands, but that's about the extent of this reveal outside of a logo. The showcase did, however, frame the experience as a Dragon Quest "for adults." Never mind that Yakuza: Like a Dragon is pretty much exactly that, but we'll take any creative leaps that the team wants to make.

Nivalis is a slice-of-life sim set in Cloudpunk's wonderful city

2 years 11 months ago

I am a fan of many things: Japanese women’s wrestling, those little rivers that get carved into beaches, and game worlds being reused and repurposed. Until RPS rebrands, I’ll only get to talk about that third thing in that list. But look! Nivalis has been announced. It’s a “slice-of-life” game set in the same city as cyberpunk delivery sim Cloudpunk. You get to live there, learning to cook, decorating your apartment, and even go fishing.

MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries has stomped and crashed its way onto Steam and GOG today, after a year and a half of exclusivity on the Epic Games and Microsoft stores. I'm in love with this Nintendo GameCube PC

2 years 11 months ago

Of all the Nintendo consoles I've owned over the years, the one I love the most has to be the GameCube. Its little cubic lunchbox design is just so gosh darn cute, and the handle - oh, the handle! - is a touch of genius, even if it's completely superfluous and has never been used by a single human being. Now, one industrious Reddit user has turned their old peach-coloured GameCube into a tiny, portable PC, and goodness, I am in love.

Square Enix announce Dragon Quest 12

2 years 11 months ago

Today, Square Enix celebrated the 35th anniversary of the Dragon Quest series, announcing a handful of new games and spin-offs from the JRPG series. The biggest reveal was the announcement of Dragon Quest 12: The Flames Of Fate, the next mainline game following 2017's Dragon Quest 11. While the developers didn't reveal too much about it, DQ12 certainly sounds like a darker, moodier take on the series, with Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii saying, "it's like a Dragon Quest for adults".

Call Of Duty: Warzone's trucks are probably being nerfed

2 years 11 months ago

UPDATE:

As prophesised, Raven Software have indeed nerfed the trucks. According to their patch notes, they've reduced the number that spawn around the map. This should mean they'll be a bit easier to whittle down over the course of a match.

Other changes include adjustments to popular weapons the CR-56 AMAX, FARA, and LW3-Tundra. Some mid-range optics have also been reworked too, which should make them more viable.

Turns out that it's not humans with guns who pose the biggest threat in Call Of Duty: Warzone, it's actually the trucks. These six-wheeled behemoths have proven themselves to be a dominant force in Verdansk, so much so that machine often wins over man. But it looks like Raven Software might be hitting them with a nerf soon.

Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown DLC takes the roster back to the blocks

2 years 11 months ago

It might not have hit the ring just yet, but Sega has already announced a day-one DLC pack for its upcoming Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown. The aesthetic-only add-on sees Akira and pals return to their strangely unnerving polygonal roots.

The "Legendary Pack", which will launch alongside Ultimate Showdown on June 1, will add alternate skins for every character on the roster, replicating the classic "Virtua" look that took the arcade scene by storm back in 1993. While this turns back the clock for classic characters such as Pai, Wolf, and Sarah, it's going to be fun to retroactively see latter-day fighters such as Vanessa, El Blaze, and Eileen recreated in beautiful, box-headed glory.

Gearbox Is Adding Borderlands 3 Crossplay, But Gearbox Was Told To Remove PS5 And PS4 Support

2 years 11 months ago

Sony has isolated itself in the past when looking at crossplay. While the company eventually conceded to long-time pressure to add this feature for games like Fortnite despite its previous staunch stance against opening up the ability to play between platforms, it looks like it's still an ongoing battle. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford confirmed that Borderlands 3 crossplay is included in an upcoming update for the game, but that "the publisher" has removed compatibility for PS5 and PS4 players due to certification.

Pitchford took to Twitter to confirm the crossplay news, a feature that will be available for Xbox, PC, and Google Stadia players. It was meant to include support for PlayStation players before Sony stepped in:

Solve puzzles with pals as post office kiwis in KeyWe this August

2 years 11 months ago

In KeyWe, you and a friend play as Jeff and Debra. They're a pair of kiwis (the flightless birds, not the fruit - but I'd also play that game) tasked with running a mailroom; stamping letters, writing telegrams and sending mail on its merry way. It's a delightful co-op puzzler that'll have you hopping around an office that's far too big for such tiny postmasters, but you'll be able to help them out when it launches on August 31st.
