Mass Effect 1 DLC Cut Because of Corrupted Source Code

3 years 3 months ago
Mass Effect Legendary Edition is shaping up to be the definitive version of the original Mass Effect trilogy. Aside from multiplayer, Mass Effect Legendary Edition will come with nearly every bit of content and DLC, except for one piece of DLC from Mass Effect 1 that may be permanently lost. The DLC is Pinnacle Station, an add-on for the first Mass Effect that was originally released on the Xbox 360 and included a new map and 13 combat scenarios to help players hone their skills. Unfortunately, in an interview with Game Informer Legendary Edition project director Mac Walters reveals that despite the developers' best attempts, the DLC's source code is corrupted beyond repair. Word of Pinnacle Station's source code woes actually dates back to when the Mass Effect Trilogy was released on the PlayStation 3, As in the Legendary Edition, Pinnacle Station was not included in the PS3 trilogy and at the time the developers shared it was due to a source code corruption. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/02/02/mass-effect-legendary-edition-our-first-impressions"] That issue persists today when Walters revealed that attempts to get the DLC into the Legendary Edition were "an emotional roller coaster[.]" Pinnacle Station was actually developed by an external studio called Demiurge. BioWare contacted Demiurge to see if they could get the original Pinnacle Station files from this team in place of BioWare's files.

Gearbox Franchises May Be Used by Other Developers After Embracer Merger

3 years 3 months ago
Following the acquisition of Borderlands studio Gearbox by Embracer Group for $1.3 billion, Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford says the deal could mean that other studios owned by Embracer Group could wind up making games with Gearbox properties. In an interview with VentureBeat, Pitchford reaffirmed that Gearbox was still working on Homeworld 3 in partnership with Blackbird Interactive, but that the continuation of the franchise was "just scratching the surface" of the company's plans. "The plans are a spectrum of internally developed games with Gearbox IP, internally developed games with original IP from Gearbox, external partners that are both publishing partners, where we’re publishing them in a second party relationship, and then there are also other developers working on Gearbox IP as well," he said. "That can expand, especially as we start interacting without friction with other members of the Embracer Group that have some interest. There are a lot of folks that would love to work on Gearbox IP, and Gearbox would love to help some of the Embracer Group games that might be stronger in other markets be published more effectively in North America." Other studios within Embracer Group include THQ Nordic, Saber Interactive, Koch Media, DECA Games, Amplifier Game Invest, and Coffee Stain Holding, as well as Aspyr Media and Easybrain -- which it acquired today alongside Gearbox.

Destruction AllStars Devs Turn Off Voice Chat by Default After Player Complaints

3 years 3 months ago
Update: Lucid Games, developers of Destruction AllStars, released a new hotfix that addresses the lobby voice communications system. Now, multiplayer lobby voice chat will be disabled by default for all players. Originally, lobby voice chat was left on by default for Destruction AllStars players. More than that, communications including voice and audio was routed through the PS5 DualSense controller. So even if players didn't have a headset, they would still be included in the voice chat lobby through the DualSense's built-in mic and speakers. Going forward, Lucid Games says the team is actively working on a more long-term enhancement to the way voice communications will work in its destruction derby games.

BioWare skipped multiplayer in Mass Effect: Legendary Edition due to logistics

3 years 3 months ago

The multiplayer side of Mass Effect 3 was unexpectedly fun in a hundreds-of-hours sort of way – the people who dug it genuinely loved it – but it won't be a part of this year's Mass Effect: Legendary Edition. While the three-game remaster bundle has a lot going for it, multiplayer feels like a major omission.

Speaking to Game Informer, project director Mac Walters said that the decision came down to time and resources; getting the main Mass Effect campaigns and story DLC up to speed took precedence.

"I feel strongly that we've chosen the things that are what the majority of our fans were most passionate about," he told the publication. "On the topic of multiplayer, it was just really hard. Getting all of the online systems working and functionality would have been another large chunk to do but at the same time, there are a lot of other logistics involved. The economy is built completely differently. Then questions came up like, 'Do we support it post-launch? What about people who are still playing multiplayer today? Do we try to find a way to somehow do crossplay between the PS3 and PS4?'"

In an interview with The Verge, Walters said that "at least at one point in time, everything was on the table." The lack of multiplayer let BioWare "focus on those single-player moments," and in the case of Mass Effect 3's Galactic Readiness, which had hooks in multiplayer, things are being rebalanced.

I'm sure fans will delve into the minutia and pick apart Mass Effect: Legendary Edition in due time post-release, but at least for now, there's one other notable absence: the combat-heavy Pinnacle Station DLC.

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition’s Elevator Load Times Will Be Shorter, But Just as Charming

3 years 3 months ago

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition finally has a confirmed release date for this May, and BioWare has been sharing more information about the game, along with some major changes we can expect in the remaster. Speaking with Game Informer, BioWare touched upon one of the most iconic gameplay moments from the first Mass Effect: the hilariously long load times that players have to sit through whenever they enter the elevator in the Citadel.

During these sequences, players would be able to enjoy some light banter between squadmates, as well as soundbites from the news and media reports in the elevator. These definitely helped to alleviate the long loading times, though there were still periods of awkward silences that you’d have to sit through while waiting for the game to finish loading.

With Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, the loading times have been cut short pretty significantly, but you’ll be glad to know that all of those voice lines and banter are still in the game; they’ve just been triggered to start faster when you’re in the elevator.

In addition to that, once the game finishes loading, you’ll be able to push a button to progress and skip the dialogue, or wait till your squadmates are done talking. BioWare also mentioned that the loading times on PC will vary based on your setup, but players can expect around 14 seconds of waiting with the new remaster.

The post Mass Effect: Legendary Edition’s Elevator Load Times Will Be Shorter, But Just as Charming appeared first on Twinfinite.

Atelier Ryza 2 Review – Ryza-ing to the Occasion

3 years 3 months ago

Atelier Ryza 2 on PC

Koei Tecmo and Gust had a big task ahead of them with Atelier Ryza 2, as the game signifies the first time a protagonist has ever received a direct sequel amidst the franchise’s 23 year existence. Anyone who has played the series long enough knows that if any character deserves to get more time in the spotlight, it is the infectiously peppy alchemist, Ryza.

Atelier Ryza 2 takes place three years after the events of the 2019 release, as Ryza and friends set off on a much larger adventure this time around. Compared to its predecessor, this new setting is huge, full to the brim with exciting places to explore, ranging from sprawling cityscapes to ancient ruins.

Exploring these large landscapes is surprisingly cathartic, as it is easy to find yourself lost in battle or exploration throughout the many idyllic areas that make up the game. The best part about the setting is that there is always something to do.

Whether it is hunting for treasure or resources, grinding monsters to level up, or solving the numerous puzzles spread throughout the ruins, it’s hard to find yourself without something to progress toward in Atelier Ryza 2.

In general, the way progression is handled in this sequel is a step up from the original, especially in regards to leveling and combat. You’ll still use the same timed turn-based system as before, but the way AP (Action Points) is used changes drastically.

Tantei Bokumetsu for PS4 & Nintendo Switch Gets First Trailer and Official Screenshots Aplenty

3 years 3 months ago

Following the reveal on Weekly Famitsu, Nippon Ichi Software officially shared the first trailer and screenshots of its upcoming game Tantei Bokumetsu.

The title “Tantei Bokumetsu” means “Detective Extermination” and it’ll be released in Japan on May 27 for PS4 and Nintendo Switch.

Of course, no English release has been shared for the moment by western arm NIS America.

The game follows the adventures of 14 detectives that call themselves the “Detective Alliance” hunting a ruthless serial killer.

Each detective has their own special skills and their name is defined by their personality. For instance, the hero is a Rank 100 newcomer named “Incompetent Detective.”

They’re gathered in an island and they need to find out and confront the serial killer hidden among them before they are killed themselves. Many have already been killed at the beginning of the game.

As mentioned above, detectives are ranked from 1 to 100 to avoid conflicts of opinion. When there is one, the opinion of the higher-ranked detective prevails.

In the “Adventure Part” the story progresses in visual novel-like fashion depending on the player’s choices.

In the “Investigation Simulation Part” the player can move the detectives like Chess pieces on an isometric board. They have to find out clue and avoid traps set by the killer.

Each detective moves freely on the map, but they all have different stats, and it’s important to use the right detective and the ability to “Intervene” at the right moment to investigate different situations.

You can check out the trailer and images below.

Blue Fire Review

3 years 3 months ago

Few things are more important to a 3D action platformer than having movement that’s both fun and responsive, and Blue Fire takes that fact to heart. Its assortment of agile abilities not only look great in action, but also offer the kind of precise control needed to overcome its demanding enemies and obstacles alike. While there’s a bit too much reliance on retreading familiar ground by the end, its array of treacherous yet addicting challenge rooms had me happily running, jumping, and dashing through them again and again.

At first glance, Blue Fire bears resemblance to what Hollow Knight might be reimagined in a 3D space. It’s got plenty of familiar ideas: quickly dashing between platforms in an all-but-abandoned kingdom full of dark monsters, piecing together your mysterious tiny warrior’s purpose in the world, and striking at foes while bouncing off their head with repeated aerial slashes. The few scattered survivors that aren’t trying to kill you will often have small tasks to undertake instead – quests that are actually tracked in your log, which is something I’ve always wished for in games with sprawling worlds like this one. You can even find and equip Spirits (Blue Fire’s take on Hollow Knight’s Charms) to modify and enhance your abilities to a near-ridiculous degree.

Konami Announces Record Profit as Momotaro Dentetsu for Switch Passes 2.5 Million Shipments

3 years 3 months ago

Today Konami announced its financial results for the first nine months of the fiscal year 2021, related to the period ending Dec. 31, 2020.

As you can see in the tables below, Konami’s Digital Entertainment business (which includes games) performed very strongly with +33.1% higher revenue and +79.4% higher profit year-on-year.

The rest of Konami’s businesses underperformed due to the closures related to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a matter of fact, the Digital Entertainment business was the only one showing year-on-year growth.

Yet, the growth in the Digital Entertainment business still drove record high profits for the company for the first nine month of a fiscal year.

Werewolf: The Apocalypse - Earthblood Review

3 years 3 months ago

After decades of vampires hogging all the spotlight in the World of Darkness, I've been drooling over the prospect of a good Werewolf: The Apocalypse game to showcase my favorite side of that fantastic universe… but it might be a couple decades more at this rate, because Werewolf: The Apocalypse - Earthblood is an unambitious swing at video game-ifying the beloved tabletop roleplaying game of fangs and fury that originally got me into that hobby. If it can’t make transforming into a massive beast and ripping your enemies limb from limb fun, what are we even doing here?

Review: Werewolf: The Apocalypse - Earthblood

3 years 3 months ago

"You can't stand in the way of progress" is a favored motto of your resident capitalist, and no company knows that better than Endron, the energy corporation currently sucking the life force directly out of our dying planet. But this ecological matter goes far beyond your average Wall St. executive's portfolio. The greed, recklessness, and inconsideration of this particular conglomerate's schemes are far more frightening, going beyond the bottom line.

Endron is one of the many humanistic fronts for The Wyrm, a terrifying spiritual entity that greedily drains civilizations of their very life force, leaving behind inhospitable husks, destroyed wilderness, and millions of broken lives. While the snake suits and shark smiles of its executives are avaricious enough, at its heart The Wyrm is a more ancient and primeval force, one that has currently focused its endless thirst on the greenery of Washington State woodland Tarker's Mill.

Hope is not lost, however, as Tarker's Mill is home to a pack of equally ancient, but far more noble Garou: men and women born of man, wolf, and spirit. The Warriors of Gaia. The werewolves. While the outside world merely sees another case of Endron's inhumanity visited upon Mother Earth, the Garou are more attuned to The Wyrm's machinations, vowing to stop the evil spirit from destroying their homeland, their people, and the planet itself.

Werewolf: The Apocalypse - Earthblood review - breezy but scrappy RPG action

3 years 3 months ago

Every mission always seems to end in the same way.

I creep in, stealth-style, and take cover behind the outrageously convenient waist-high panelled fence. A quick burst of Penumbra Vision - just another name for that oh-so-common video game mechanic that lets you see through walls and solid objects - shows me there's five - no, wait, eight! - enemies between the exit and I.

For a couple of minutes, I sweep around the perimeter, executing a couple of stealthy takedowns, until someone, somehow, spots me from the other side of the room, tickling not only his spider-sense but that of every other soldier in here with me, too. Some big dude with an unfeasibly enormous gun stomps over to where I'm hiding, smashes down the fence I was crouched behind, and what do you know, it's fight time.

Activision faces copyright lawsuit over Call of Duty character

3 years 3 months ago

A writer from North Carolina is taking Activision Blizzard, Infinity Ward and Major League Gaming Corp. to court over alleged copyright infringement.

The suit has been filed by Clayton Haugen, described as a photographer, videographer and writer, who claims his character of "Cade Janus" was copied by Activision to create Call of Duty operator Mara. According to the lawsuit, Haugen created Cade Janus as the central character for a short story called November Renaissance he hoped would be made into a film (thanks, TorrentFreak).

Back in 2017, Haugen hired streamer Alex Zedra to portray the character in several photographs, which were shared on social media and sent to film studios, but Haugen claims these photographs were used by Activision as a guide for the creation of Mara. Haugen also says Activision actually hired Zedra to scan her likeness for the game. The lawsuit claims Activision hired the same makeup artist to reproduce the look down to the "same hair extension", and requested that Zedra ask Haugen for the same clothing worn in the original photoshoot.
