Square Enix Has Remained Profitable Despite Post-Avengers Losses

3 years 3 months ago
Square Enix has reported year-on-year growth in its latest earnings reports, despite operating at a loss on its gaming side for two consecutive quarters. During the nine months ending December 2020, Square reports that it saw an increase in net sales of 33.7% over the same period in 2019. Additionally, the company’s operating income rose by 47.7% to 41,022 million yen. This kept the company profitable, but not quite as healthy as 2019; profits were 4.3% less than the same period last year. Despite this, Square forecasts the full year will eventually result in a more profitable year overall by 12.4%. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/09/10/marvels-avengers-review"] Factors relating to these figures can be seen in Square Enix’s presentation slides detailing the sales of HD Games across the nine months. In Q1, when the highly successful Final Fantasy 7 Remake launched, net sales were more than double Square’s best period in 2019, at 34.1 billion yen. Operating income also rose in tandem, creating an impressive spike of almost 15 billion yen. But Q2 saw a decline in net sales and a steep drop in operating income, with the company operating at a loss of approximately -6 billion yen. Net sales continued to fall in Q3, amassing 18.8 billion yen, while operating income managed to increase, but still remained at a loss.

5 Old-School Beat ‘Em Ups That Could Use a Comeback

3 years 3 months ago

Over the past couple of years, the beat ’em up genre has seen a bit of a resurgence. In 2018, Capcom came out with the Capcom Beat ‘Em Up Bundle which included a host of classic beat em’ ups like Final Fight, Knights of the Round and Captain Commando to name a few. River City Girls, a spin-off of River City Ransom, saw a release in 2019, and 2020 saw the return of Streets of Rage and Battletoads.

With the growing resurgence of the beat ’em genre, we have to ask, what other classic beat ’em up franchises could use a comeback?

Control Ultimate Edition - the next-gen experience compared on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles

3 years 3 months ago

Remedy's Control Ultimate Edition is out now for next (current?) generation console systems, delivering a substantial revamp of its 2019 classic. Bundling up the original release with its DLC, plus 60 frames per second performance and 30fps ray tracing modes, Control is a game made for the new machines. The technological limitations of the last-gen machines are effortlessly overcome and the new console editions offer more than a taste of the fully enabled PC rendition of the game - but are we looking at platform parity between the new Sony and Microsoft systems?

Remedy itself has already revealed the full specifications of the new versions, which essentially boils down to this: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X run at a native 1440p resolution (with no dynamic resolution scaling) with a temporal upscale to 2160p output. Graphics and performance modes are essentially a toggle for ray tracing support, which adds RT reflections on opaque and glass surfaces. RT locks users to 30fps gaming, while disabling it removes the frame-rate cap, with performance only limited by 60Hz v-sync. There is an interesting aside to this though: engaging photo mode in-game removes the 30fps cap in RT mode, opening the door to a potential benchmark of sorts, something we'll take a closer look at in due course.

Supply-constrained PS5 shifts 4.5m units as Sony predicts highest-ever profit

3 years 3 months ago

The PlayStation 5 has sold 4.5m units, Sony has announced.

It's an impressive figure for the supply-constrained console, which was released in November 2020 amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The sales figure, accurate as of 31st December 2020, is roughly in-line with the launch sales of the PlayStation 4 at the same point in its life. But it's worth noting demand for the PS5 has heavily outstripped supply, and it remains out of stock at a raft of retailers who have faced trouble with scalpers and bots.

2K Will Still Publish Borderlands Despite Gearbox Takeover

3 years 3 months ago
2K has confirmed that it will remain the publisher of the Borderlands games, despite the recent announcement that Gearbox has been acquired by Embracer. In a statement sent to IGN, a 2K spokesperson said: "As the proud publisher of the Borderlands franchise, we are happy for our partners at Gearbox and this exciting new chapter for their organization. The merger does not change 2K’s relationship with Gearbox nor our role as the publisher for the Borderlands IP or any other projects we are currently working on with the studio. We look forward to continuing our long-term partnership with this incredibly talented team and delivering many more exciting entertainment experiences to gaming fans around the world.” [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/09/10/borderlands-3-review"] Embracer, a video games holding company, publishes games via THQ Nordic, its primary publishing subsidiary. As such, some may have wondered if Borderlands would switch from being published by 2K to THQ Nordic or Deep Silver, another publishing company owned by Embracer. But, as 2K have now made clear, that will not be the case. Embracer recently acquired 13 companies in one day, but Gearbox signals the company's highest profile developer catch so far. Biomutant Gameplay Breakdown: A Weird Open World Concoction of Zelda, Shadow of Mordor, And More

3 years 3 months ago
Over the course of almost four years, developer Experiment 101 has revealed slivers of information about Biomutant, its bonkers open-world adventure. Those tidbits of knowledge form a scattershot, incomplete picture of a freeform RPG that might be a bit Zelda-y. But, thanks to a recent chat with Experiment 101 studio head Stefan Ljungqvist, we now have a more comprehensive understanding of what Biomutant is. “If you like Breath of the Wild, or that type of structure, I think you're really going to enjoy this game,” Ljungqvist tells me, confirming that Zelda suspicion. But as he continues to paint a picture of Biomutant, plenty more games come to mind; Far Cry, Mad Max, Monster Hunter, and even Fallout among them. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/06/24/biomutant-10-minutes-of-new-gameplay-footage"] Biomutant is built around three “facets”; a Tribe War, the world-sustaining Tree of Life, and your character’s backstory. A linear mission chain, designed specifically to provide some structure to the otherwise freeform world, forms the main storyline, and will guide players into these three facets. The open-world nature of the game, though, means you can interact with these aspects however you please, within reason. “There's six tribes in the world,” says Ljungqvist, beginning his breakdown of these facets. “It's kind of a Shadow of Mordor-lite thing going on. I start by allying with one leader from a tribe.” The world is filled with outposts, each owned by one of the six tribes. Conquer these for your chosen tribe, and you’ll begin to amass favour with your new allies. “You gradually become the tribe's champion,” Ljungqvist explains.

EA Has Made $3 Billion from Star Wars Games - and It Isn't Slowing Down Anytime Soon

3 years 3 months ago
EA has made over $3 billion from its slate of Star Wars titles, and it isn't planning on slowing down development for how many games it makes within that license – even if it no longer holds the exclusive rights to make them. Speaking during yesterday's EA earnings call (as transcribed by Seeking Alpha), EA CEO Andrew Wilson was asked if the company would be changing how it develops games after seemingly losing the exclusive license to create Star Wars games. "I don’t think you should imagine that the fact that some other people will build some Star Wars games is going to change our commitment to that IP or our ability to build the appropriate number of games," replied Wilson. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/01/13/open-world-star-wars-game-in-the-works-at-ubisoft-ign-news"] Wilson made clear how valuable Star Wars has been to the company, pointing out that EA Star Wars games have brought in "over $3 billion in net bookings" and 52 million sales since EA began making them (including before that exclusivity deal). Mobile game Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes has brought in $1 billion of that amount on its own. Wilson then made clear that the company has no plans to slow down its Star Wars games production: "We’re excited by what we’ll be able to do in the future.

GoldenEye 007: Cancelled Remaster Files Have Leaked

3 years 3 months ago
The game files for Rare’s cancelled GoldenEye 007 Remaster have been shared onto the internet. The remaster, originally planned for release on Xbox 360 via XBLA but eventually cancelled due to a rights issue, was brought to everyone’s attention once again last month via a video showing a full playthrough. But now the files have been posted to archive and sharing sites on the internet, allowing the public to get their hands on the doomed project. As demonstrated by the video uploaded to YouTube, this remaster allows you to swap between original and upgraded visuals, much like the Halo remasters. It runs at 60FPS and can be played at 4K, which is quite a leap beyond the capabilities of the Xbox 360 console for which it was built. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2015/10/13/history-of-awesome-goldeneye-007"] In the YouTube video of the remaster, uploader Graslu00 says that they were told the game would be possibly released in some form to the public in 2021. It appears that release has come very quickly. Playing this version requires the use of an emulator or a modded Xbox 360, so it’s important to note that anyone wishing to seek the files out will be dabbling in murky legal waters, not to mention the fact that the game itself has likely leaked from within Rare and can thus be considered stolen property. For legitimate Bond, we can all look forward to Project 007 from Hitman developer IO Interactive. The studio has certainly proven its Bond credentials in Hitman 3. (Update) It looks like Tails' voice actor is out for Sonic Prime too

3 years 2 months ago

[Update #2: Eggman is still in.

Voice actor Mike Pollock, who has been the voice since basically since 2003, is not being replaced. Their statement on Twitter makes this clear: "You know what they say: the more the merrier! You've not yet heard the last of me as Dr. Eggman in Sonic the Hedgehog video games! Kindly prepare your ears accordingly. If you guessed otherwise, SURPRISE!!!! Now if you'll excuse me, I have to stock up on lozenges."

They also go on to comment on all of the recent casting shifts, diplomatically stating: "On a personal note, I know you'll want to speculate about what happened, and possible casting choices, but please bear in mind that, IRL, actors' careers are steered by auditions, callbacks, bookings and rejections. It's a bit more complicated than choosing sides for kickball."]

[Update: Amy is out too, it seems. The voice of Amy for around a decade announced that she is not going to be working on Sonic Prime with the rest of her crew. As she puts it: "It’s true. I’m loading out with my brilliant compadres."]

As you may have heard, there's a new Sonic show in town called Sonic Prime, and it's headed to Netflix in 2022. But it will be moving forward without Roger Craig Smith, the former voice of Sonic.

Valve loses controller patent lawsuit, to pay $4 million in damages

3 years 3 months ago

Last week, we reported on how Valve was facing a lawsuit over the design of its Steam Controller hardware, with manufacturer Ironburg Inventions, (acting on behalf of subsidiary SCUF Gaming), alleging that the discontinued gamepad infringed upon its patents. Yesterday, a jury voted unanimously in favor of Ironburg.

The patent in question concerned the implementation of rear triggers - located on the underside of the Steam Controller and operated by the player's middle fingers. This simple invention was patented back in 2011 by Simon Burgess and Ironburg CEO Duncan Ironmonger. While the design has been officially sub-licensed to brands such as Xbox, Ironburg stated that Valve had no such license and was therefore infringing upon its patent with the Steam Controller's design.

After the jury found in favor of Ironburg on all seven of its patent infringement claims, the court ordered Valve to pay damages to the amount of $4 million. Ironburg had been initially pushing for $11 million, reduced to $6 million (comparable to the Xbox sub-licensing contract). Importantly, however, the jury found Valve's patent infringement to be "willful," and as such, the District Judge could potentially raise the damage amount.

As an interesting aside, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the trial was conducted remotely via online calling tool Zoom, making it the first completely socially distanced jury trial in the United States.

Microsoft Flight Simulator Interview: Jorg Neumann on Updates, Future Plans, Xbox Version, & Much More

3 years 3 months ago

Over five months have passed since the release of Microsoft Flight Simulator, the critically acclaimed latest iteration of the long-standing series which has brought the genre back under the mainstream spotlight — perhaps, to its greatest extent ever.

Yet, there is much more to come: another release is coming up, with the Xbox Series X|S version in the summer, which promises to garner an even wider audience of new players on console. On the other hand, the PC version is receiving large monthly updates.

To know more about what Microsoft has in store for flight simulation enthusiasts and gamers alike, and to gain a better appreciation of the enormous complexity involved with running such a large piece of software and consistently updating it, Twinfinite spoke with the Head of Microsoft Flight Simulator, Jorg Neumann.

Giuseppe: Five months have passed since the release of Microsoft Flight Simulator. How do you feel about it now that things had time to settle at least a bit?

Jorg Neumann: It’s been awesome. We announced at E3 2019 and I think it was a big surprise, but ultimately, as we opened up more and more between alphas and betas, we got a lot of input. A lot of that was positive and validation, but the proof is always in the pudding, really.

We launched and we knew that people were excited about the release, but then they played it and gave us a lot of feedback. The group that we always focused on is the core simmers because they’ve been here in many cases for decades and they know a ton.

Many of them were in the beta, but when you’re out in the market you get even more feedback and I oftentimes say that it’s incredible and a blessing that there are so many people who truly care about flight simming and that they’re so interested in sharing their knowledge to truly make the platform as good as it can be.

Total War: Warhammer III Announced – Kislev, Cathay, & The Chaos Factions Prepare For Battle

3 years 3 months ago

As teased over the past few days, Creative Assembly and Sega finally announced Total War: Warhammer III.

The last chapter of the trilogy will partly tread uncharted territory. Not only it will bring to the battle the four chaos factions, Khorne, Nurgle, Slaanesh, and Tzeentch, but also Kislev and Cathay.

According to a FAQ published by the developer, the developers partnered with Games Workshop to expand these factions for the game.

The game is coming this year for both Steam and Epic Games Store, but there won’t be any exclusive content for either storefront.

A Mortal Empires-like free DLC combining all three games will also come, and unsurprisingly, the End Times campaign and Age of Sigmar will not be involved (Thank the Lady!)

“As with Total War: WARHAMMER and Total War: WARHAMMER II, Total War: WARHAMMER III is set around the reign of Karl Franz. Our primary source is Warhammer Fantasy Battles 8th Edition, although we have and will continue to use older editions for inspiration where appropriate.”

An early adopter bonus in the form of a race pack will be provided, but for now its nature has not been shared.

Below you can find the announcement trailer and a comment from Game Director, Ian Roxburgh.

5 Promising MMORPGs Coming in 2021

3 years 3 months ago

Ashes of Creation

Upcoming 2021 MMORPGs

upcoming mmorpgs 2021

Ashes of Creation is among the most ambitious game on promising upcoming MMORPGs hopefully coming in 2021, and that’s because of its potentially revolutionary Node System.

Nodes are designed to give players an incredible amount of agency on how the world of Ashes of Creation evolves and changes over time. Nodes are areas on the map that players can settle into and build up to over time. As players gather, organize, and do quests, nodes will develop from small villages to massive cities that will have considerable influence and power. If player interest drifts elsewhere, the cities will degrade over time.

PvP will be an important part of the gameplay as well. Players with like-minded goals will influence a cities development, and groups with different views that have a need for that city’s resource may decide to siege it and forcibly take control.

There are lessons of brilliance in Star Wars Battlefront 2, not just the drama

3 years 3 months ago

Star Wars Battlefront 2, it turns out, is really quite good. I've been playing - the new one, this is - a little obsessively over the last week, an obsession launched about three-and-a-bit years too late as far as poor DICE is probably concerned, and one which I feel a little guilty about, not least because I got it for free.

Battlefront 2 was handed out for free for about a week on the Epic Games store in January, you see, and it's also bundled in with a Game Pass Ultimate subscription, thanks to the recent inclusion of EA Play with that, too. The result has been a late, but seemingly quite sustained second wind. Servers are full, and quite nicely balanced, with the end-of-round scoresheets showing everything from max-level players with 60-plus kills to low-level newbies holding their own. On PC at least, people are quite chatty, via the in-game feed, in that very Battlefield kind of way, and unlike Battlefield it's quite chill, as far as multiplayer shooters go - because Battlefront 2 is quite a chilled game.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition looks to be a lavish package that lovingly restores much of the spirit and content of BioWare's beloved trilogy - except for one single-player DLC that's missing.

Pinnacle Station, an add-on that brought a small hub and combat simulator to Mass Effect 1, isn't included.

If you're familiar with the saga of this DLC's inclusion in other versions of the game you may know what's coming - but, if not, BioWare has now confirmed why.
