Someone should make a game about: Dishwashing

3 years 10 months ago

Not to brag but I am probably one of the three best washer-uppers in the world. First proper job at a fancy creperie in my early teens. Just me and a WinterHalter 2000 keeping the kitchen in business. I would work ludicrous shifts and then go home soaked, like I had survived something. Really it was the kitchen that had survived something - it had survived me. One of the three best washer-uppers in the world.

The KP life. Plongeurs. George Orwell and garbage disposal systems. So much potential here. For one thing there is a rich seam of strategy running through dishwashing. Loading the machine - that is a tricky business! Especially when you are dealing with industrial quantities of stuff to get cleaned, and especially especially when you're dealing with things that have been burnt on hard during cooking. Cheese, when burnt, can become a whole different thing to the friendly cheese that hangs out in your fridge. I have a cut running down the side of my palm that looks really nasty. It is really nasty! Knife? People will ask. Broken glass? No sir. That cut is from a piece of cheese, that had been blasted until it was brittle and sharp. I swoon a little to think about it. To think of that day!

PS5: Sony Reportedly Increasing Production to 10 Million Consoles in 2020

3 years 10 months ago
Sony is reportedly increasing its PlayStation 5 production to 10 million units in 2020 as it "sees the prolonged effects of the COVID-19 pandemic boosting demand for gaming." As reported by Nikkei Asian Review and Bloomberg, Sony had originally planned to produce 5-6 million consoles by the end of March 2021, but the change in demand due to the global pandemic has caused it to change course. Sony is said to have begun PS5 mass production in June and "under the latest plan, expects to assemble 5 million units by the end of September and another 5 million between October and December." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/06/12/ps5-reveal-event-in-5-minutes"] Not all 10 million may make it to store shelves in 2020, however, as logistical delays may delay a percentage of the PlayStation 5 consoles to 2021. A big factor in the potential delay for some of the stock is due to shipping constraints, as "a large proportion of Sony’s consoles are made in China and sent out via sea around the world." It can take months for these consoles to make it from China to the U.S. and Europe via ocean lines, which can cause issues keeping PS5s in stock.

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite Adds New Magical Skills Through SOS Training

3 years 10 months ago

As Harry Potter: Wizards Unite enters its second year of release, Niantic is adding a whole new raft of skill trees for players to unlock, strengthening their skills and abilities, thanks to the Statute of Secrecy Task Force.

Accessible to all players over level 4 regardless of their chosen Profession, the upcoming SOS Training feature will give players access to new abilities, as well as providing buffs to existing ones.

The new abilities to be unlocked by SOS training are called Field Charms, referring to a set of spells that can be cast directly on the world map. These include the Trace Charm, which can be cast on an existing Trace to reveal more in the immediate area, the Inn Charm, which can be cast on Inns to generate extra spell energy, and the Greenhouse Charm, which causes Greenhouses to produce rare potion ingredients.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla Brings Back A Classic Mechanic From The Original Game

3 years 10 months ago

Over many years and many iterations of the Assassin's Creed franchise, the iconic assassin's outfit slowly became more ostentatious and less useful for, say, hiding among a group of white-robed monks. The next game in the series, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, is bringing hoods, hidden blades, and social stealth back.

While the first hands-on demo GameSpot previewed for Assassin's Creed Valhalla was very action-heavy, the developers have promised that the entire game doesn't follow this mould.

"We do bring social stealth back in a lot of our quests and a lot of parts in our world," said assistant level design director Laurence Letalien in an interview with GameSpot's Jordan Ramée. "We do have this mechanic of disguise where you can put your hood on and in different locations where you want to blend in more get less detected, you can put it on and it's a mechanic you can use to social stealth between crowds. We are also bringing back the social stealth of the monks walking around you can blend with them."

MLB The Show 20 Will Now Mirror The Real-Life 60-Game Season Schedule

3 years 10 months ago

MLB The Show 20 released in March, just as social distancing was starting to happen amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and the standard 162 game baseball season still looked like a possibility. Now, with a new match schedule in place for a reduced season, the PS4 exclusive game is updating one of its modes to reflect this.

The Show Nation has provided an update on how the 2020 season will play out in-game, now that the MLB season is starting. The big change is that Play Now Live will mirror the real-life 60-game schedule, so you'll be able to play along with the real season.

There has not been enough time for the team at San Diego Studio to implement similar changes across the entire game, though, so in other modes details like season length, rules, and schedule will remain in-line with a 162 game season. The size of crowds in the game will also not be affected. It'll still be realistic, but it won't resemble the 2020 season--and really, any escape from 2020 is welcome.

Sony Increasing PS5 Console Production For Launch Window - Report

3 years 10 months ago

A new report from the Nikkei Asian Review has some interesting details on the PlayStation 5. The site's sources claim that Sony is significantly increasing its shipment projection for the next-generation console. This comes after a report from April said PS5's launch supply could be lower than that of the PS4, but now that apparently will not be the case.

The company has increased its production orders from 6 million units to 9 million units, though the window of time for their production was not mentioned in the report. These units will be assembled at Sony's new factory in Japan where robots outnumber humans. Separately, Bloomberg reported that Sony is aiming to produce 10 million PS5 consoles by the end of 2020. That wouldn't necessarily mean that 10 million make it to store shelves by the end of the year.

"The electronics giant has informed assembly partners and suppliers it’s radically increasing orders for its next-generation console, though logistics may yet pose a challenge to delivering all those machines on time for the holiday shopping season, the people said, asking to remain anonymous," Bloomberg reported.

Halo 3's release on PC has helped The Master Chief Collection's player population on Steam surge.

This Rick & Morty Recreation of the Cyberpunk 2077 E3 2018 Trailer Is Brilliant

3 years 10 months ago

Cyberpunk 2077 has been teased for a few years now, and while it’s already been delayed a few times, it’s still slated for a November release at the end of this year. In the meantime, though, you can enjoy a fantastically recreated version of the E3 world premiere trailer from 2018.

YouTube user StayAu79 has recreated that entire trailer using only clips from the popular animated TV series, Rick and Morty. More specifically, the clips are all taken from episode 7 of season 3, and they fit surprisingly well with Cyberpunk 2077’s dystopian and gritty sci-fi universe. You can check out the recreated trailer down below:

And for reference, here’s the original world premiere trailer from 2018:

Cyberpunk 2077 is being developed by CD Projekt Red, and is set to be released for PC and consoles this November.

Xbox Series X: What's Velocity Architecture All About? Microsoft Explains

3 years 10 months ago

One of the new features of the Xbox Series X is called "Xbox Velocity Architecture," and it's a new piece of technology that Microsoft says will help the console make games look and run better.

In a blog post, Xbox's Jason Ronald mentioned that, with current-generation games, designers oftentimes need to create things like elevators and hallways to hide things in the background as the game loads certain in-game elements. "This challenge would continue to increase exponentially and further constrain the ambition for truly transformative games," Ronald said. "This feedback influenced the design and development of the Xbox Velocity Architecture."

To understand what Xbox Velocity Architecture is, Ronald said you can think of it as "the soul" with the Series X's new custom processor as the heart. "Through a deep integration of hardware and software innovation, the Xbox Velocity Architecture will power next-gen gaming experiences unlike anything you have seen before," Ronald said.

This Animal Crossing: New Horizons KK Slider Controller Looks Like Cake

3 years 10 months ago

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is, without a doubt, one of the biggest video game releases of this year. It released right as most of the world was entering a period of lockdown, making it one of the most relaxing and engrossing games to play while at home. If you can’t get enough of the game, though, here’s something that might interest you.

Over on Amazon, you can now purchase a PowerA enhanced controller for the Nintendo Switch, with a pretty pastel KK Slider design on it.

It’s not an official Nintendo product, but it does match the Animal Crossing-themed Switch itself pretty well, and the two would go quite nicely together. At the time of writing, it’s going for $40, which is way cheaper than the official Switch Pro Controller itself.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is now available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.

Cyberpunk 2077 Santo Domingo Concept Art Shows Off The Game's Slums

3 years 10 months ago

Cyberpunk 2077 is coming in November following a delay, but while the wait keeps stretching out, there's been a steady drip-feed of content to keep us excited. We've got a hands-on report with the game, there's a comic coming in September, and now there's some new concept art for us to enjoy.

These three pieces, tweeted by the game's official account, showcase Santo Domingo. It's one of the oldest areas in Night City, the game's setting, and according to the tweet "corporations use it as a testing ground for industrial projects," meaning that it's a mix of freshly-built factories and slums, with opulent megabuildings stretching into the sky but a lot of inequality at ground level.

You can check out the art in the tweet below. It doesn't represent the look of the final product, necessarily, but it looks great.

Pokemon Players In Australia Got In Trouble For Playing The Game During COVID-19 Lockdown

3 years 10 months ago

Two men from Victoria, Australia have been reprimanded for leaving their homes to play Pokemon amid a spike in coronavirus cases in the state.

In a briefing with press today, Victoria's deputy commissioner Rick Nugent spoke about the hundreds of fines issued in recent days for breaches of the recently introduced rules, and he singled out some Pokemon players in particular.

"The reasons for leaving your premises are well-known--I can say they don't include playing Pokemon," Nugent said. "A couple of mates out in the car travelling around playing Pokemon doesn't fit within those reasons to leave, and those males were issued with infringement notices."

The next wave of Smash Bros. amiibo, featuring two of the DLC characters introduced in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, is arriving on October 2. Nintendo has confirmed on Twitter that figurines of the two characters, which were previously announced alongside Min-Min, will both release on this date.

From this date, you'll be able to pick up Joker from Persona 5 and Hero from the Dragon Quest series as amiibo.

Although there are multiple models of Hero in the game, only one seems to be available as an amiibo. Historically, characters with multiple models have sometimes released with variants, including Bayonetta and Corrin. Whether we'll see figurines for the other versions of Hero in the future remains to be seen.

Deathloop's Latest Concept Art Features No Violence, Just The PS5 Game's Nice Interiors

3 years 10 months ago

Deathloop, the upcoming PlayStation 5 and PC title from Arkane, is going to be a violent experience. You'll play as Colt, who is being hunted by and has to take down multiple assassins, and naturally you're going to kill a lot of people. As such, a lot of the game's art and marketing so far has featured weapons and people wielding them.

However, the latest concept art shown off on the game's Twitter account is much calmer, and focuses on some of the interior designs the team has worked up for the game. Nice staircases? The game has them. A music feature wall with a guitar and records affixed to it? Very chic. And look at those planter boxes!

It's a shame you'll likely get blood on those polished floors.

How Dragon Age Writer David Gaider's New Game Is Coming Along

3 years 10 months ago

After some less-than-optimal news earlier this year regarding the impact of COVID-19, the developers of Dragon Age writer David Gaider's new game have shared an update on how Chorus: An Adventure Musical is shaping up. Summerfall Studios' Liam Esler wrote in an update to the game's crowdfunding page that the team remains "very heads down" as it works on "early production" elements of the game.

"The difficult thing with early production is there's not a lot that we can show, as a lot of it is preparatory, or so early we don't feel is ready to be made public," Esler said. "We also want to be very careful not to share any spoilers!"

Chorus--which is not to be confused by the other game called Chorus from Deep Silver--is "moving along pretty well," Esler said. The COVID-19 pandemic has "caused some delays," he explained, but he remarked that he's proud of the team for making up some of the lost time.

The Sims 4 Is Adding Knitting DLC So Your Sims Can Become Obsessed With Yarn

3 years 10 months ago

The Sims 4 has detailed its next piece of DLC, and its focused on knitting. The Sims 4: Nifty Knitting is a new Stuff Pack, which Sims fans were able to vote on back in March 2019. The DLC will arrive for PC, PS4, and Xbox One on July 28.

The trailer below shows off how many items your Sims will be able to knit, but it goes deeper than that. You'll be able to design your knitting studio, and you can buy and sell your creations for Simoleons through Plopsy, an in-game marketplace.

The pack will also contain new items and hairstyles, and the knitting skill you'll unlock can be taught to multiple Sims to eventually unlock new styles.

EA has also hinted at an appearance from Yarny, the star of Unravel, in this game. He does not pop up in the trailer, so we're not sure what his cameo will look like.

Dragon's Dogma Is Getting An Anime Adaptation

3 years 10 months ago

Dragon's Dogma is a strange, wonderful RPG from Capcom that originally released back in 2012. It received an expansion in 2013, and since then the whole package has been ported several times, giving new players plenty of chances to give it a shot. Though devout fans (like me) have been hoping for a sequel announcement, Netflix may have just given us the next best thing.

The streaming company revealed on Twitter that an animated adaptation of Dragon's Dogma is on its way, debuting on September 17. The tweet also included a poster to tease the series, but no other solid details.

Dragon's Dogma Netflix Anime Release Date, First Art Revealed

3 years 10 months ago
Netflix’s Dragon’s Dogma anime adaptation will be coming to the streaming service on September 17. Netflix also revealed the first poster for the anime adaptation which serves as a first look at the art style for the series. Netflix announced a new anime adaptation of Dragon’s Dogma back in 2019. It’s produced as a partnership between Anima, Sublimation, and David Production and is based on the 2012 action-RPG developed by Capcom. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2016/01/16/dragons-dogma-dark-arisen-in-4k"] At the time of the announcement, Netflix said the Dragon’s Dogma anime will follow “a man’s journey seeking revenge on a dragon who stole his heart. ON his way, the man is brought back to life as an ‘Arisen’. An action-adventure about a man challenged by demons who represent the seven deadly sins of humans.” The poster conveniently shows off all three elements of the synopsis: dragon, man, man’s heart. Seems simple enough.

Call Of Duty League Sets Viewership Records Ahead Of Championship

3 years 10 months ago

This past weekend's Call of Duty League event was a huge success in terms of viewership numbers. Activision announced that the New York Subliners Home Series reached the highest viewership of the entire season for YouTube, with around 115,000 people watching at its peak.

The number doesn't count other viewership sources, so the total number of viewers is likely higher. Whatever the case, 115,000 surpasses the previous record of 113,000 peak viewers from the Atlanta Home Series.

The Call of Duty League rolls on this weekend with the London Royal Ravens Home Series, which will air on YouTube over the July 17-19 weekend. The final series in the regular season, the Toronto Home Series, will follow on July 24-26.

Civ 6's next chunk of DLC adds Cthulhu-worshipping secret societies and more

3 years 10 months ago

Civilization 6's second slice of DLC for the recently launched New Frontier expansion pass - titled the Ethiopia Pack - will be coming to PC and consoles next Thursday, 23rd July.

The flagship addition this time, unsurprisingly, is the introduction of Ethiopia as a new civilisation with a new leader, and although developer Firaxis is saving details of both until closer to launch, it has shared more information on what's coming elsewhere.

For instance, the Ethiopia Pack also introduces a new district type - the Diplomatic Quarter - which grants more culture for each delegation or embassy from a foreign civ, and reduces the level of spies targeting the district or an adjacent one.
