Live, die, try again in Revita

3 years 1 month ago

Revita is a very hard blend of roguelite and twin-stick shooter, which I am terrible at but quite enjoying. Breaking down those two terms a little, it offers procedural scrambling of enemies in amidst persistent progress - you die and die but eventually you will get somewhere - and you aim with one stick and move with another.

But it's not top-down like a lot of twin-sticks. It's a side-on 2D platformer, and one with a control scheme that at first took me quite a lot of getting used to. Enemies come at you quick in the game's small arenas, so keeping your distant is crucial. Revita maps a jump and dash to the left bumper and trigger respectively, in the standard control method that it encourages you quite strongly to use. I am a slow learner with new things, and this has left me feeling a bit lop-sided. I switched to a more standard control layout briefly, but while that put jump and dash on face buttons it messed up aiming for me. So I am powering through with the standard layout as I was told to do.

There are two things I already love about this game. One is the art style, which uses chunky pixels to create a world that I am eager to explore. The main hub area so far is a train station, and the first boss I fought - I don't think I was able to win - hangs out in a clock tower. The only thing I love more than train stations and clock towers is elevators - I am weird - and that's how you move between levels. Revita, throw in a lighthouse and I am yours for life.

Pokémon Go Dev's Pikmin Game Is Already Playable in Singapore

3 years 1 month ago
Niantic, the creator of Pokémon Go, has announced that it's begun testing for its Pikmin AR game in Singapore. The game, which was only teased for the first time last week, will be released this year globally, but Singaporean players will be the first in the world to try it. No matter where you are, you can pre-register to test the game in when it comes to your region.

At time of writing, exactly how the game works is still unknown, with Singaporean player Elias Chew explaining on Twitter that the game displays confidentiality notices when played. Chew did explain to another Twitter user that the game uses a Google Fit step count to grow Pikmin as you walk.

Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection producer says the third game is his favorite and the toughest, but is sure 'a lot of fans may not agree'

3 years 1 month ago

The Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection is an interesting remaster prospect.

For many, they'll be experiencing the entire trilogy for the first time. Others just prefer the first: an absolute classic in the action genre, even still. Some may also dig the second game, which isn't quite as beloved, but still has its merits. Others will want to relive the polarizing third entry as a flight of fancy of sorts.

In any case, it's a collection that's worth talking about. And we did just that with the game's producer, Fumihiko Yasuda. Even though the third game was their first major project at Koei Tecmo, they mused with us on the past, present, and future of the series.

Have You Played... Endless Legend?

3 years 1 month ago

Late one crisp Christmas Eve, four years before I joined Rock Paper Shotgun, I was overjoyed to see that the team had elected Endless Legend as the best PC game of 2014. Back then I was in the middle of what would turn out to be a period of obsession that lasted about 230 hours of time in-game. I was in love with the landscapes, the storytelling, and the new ideas that Amplitude has injected into a formula that had barely changed since I was first introduced to it as a kid with Civilization II.

Can’t Drive This Review

3 years 1 month ago

The tangled result of taking Tetris and Trackmania Turbo and tossing them into a tumble dryer, Can’t Drive This is a clever and compulsive co-op puzzle racer. With one player literally building a road out of random tiles as the other navigates the chaotic, impromptu track that results, Can’t Drive This is one of the most inventive driving games I’ve played in recent years, although its modest selection of modes makes it a multiplayer experience best enjoyed in short bursts rather than an all-night party classic-in-the-making.

[ignvideo width=610 height=374 url=https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/02/23/cant-drive-this-official-trailer]

Replace Tetris’ iconic tetronimoes with assorted chunks of stunt racing track and you’re most of the way to understanding how Can’t Drive This delivers its own brand of puzzle-like track pieces. Every new slab will be something random – one might be a simple square of asphalt while the next has a devilish swinging hammer designed to hamper your progress. However, some may not be square at all – they’ll be 90-degree bends or banked corners that need to be rotated before they’re placed – and others won’t even be asphalt – they’ll be a deep mud pit to mess with your grip or a giant yellow dome to throw you off-course. The variety of tiles and obstacles is decent, although the hydraulic press is a nightmare. While it appears as if you just need to skirt around it, as it slams down it seems to send out a powerful shockwave that knocks trucks from the track without touching them. It was funny at first to watch my teammates struggle to survive it, but ultimately it became regularly irritating.

Tokyo Game Show 2021 Will Happen Online Again With English Interpretation

3 years 1 month ago

Today the CESA, the Japanese Computer Entertainment Suppliers’ Association that organizes Tokyo Game Show every year, revealed its plans for the event in 2021.

The announcement, made via press release, confirms that the event will happen online like in 2020, but with a refined formula.

The dates will be between September 30 and October 3. The theme for this year will be “We still have games.”

The meaning of the theme is the desire to recreate Tokyo Game Show for the next 25 years while creating a livery future with all of those who love games. Incidentally, this year Tokyo Game Show will celebrate its 25th anniversary.

All official livestreams will have simultaneous interpretation in English to let the audience all over the world enjoy the event.

With the cooperation of digital storefronts, demo versions of many games will be offered so that everyone can play them.

A collaboration with Amazon will also let the audience purchase dedicated products.

A physical venue will actually exist for press and influencers that will be able to try the games and interview developers in order to convey them to the general audience. There will be booths for developers and a press conference will be hosted at the venue.

A virtual venue will also be prepared in collaboration with HIS, allowing the general public to take a tour of the physical location mentioned above.

At the moment, we don’t know whether Twinfinite will be able to attend Tokyo Game Show 2021, but you can bet that we’ll do our very best.

PAX East 2021 cancelled, PAX Online event coming this summer

3 years 1 month ago

It was inevitable, but now it's official. Organizers Reedpop and Penny Arcade have regrettably announced the cancellation of PAX East, which had been scheduled to take place at the Boston Convention Center the weekend of June 3, 2021.

The announcement was made via a statement on the official PAX East website.

"In light of ongoing public health concerns, ReedPop and Penny Arcade will not hold PAX East this year," said event director Kyle Marsden-Kish. "While we hoped PAX East could safely take place, we remained realistic and did not sell any tickets or space to exhibitors to avoid significantly inconveniencing our friends and partners. As we have shown via our actions throughout the pandemic, our utmost concern is the safety of the PAX family - from attendees, exhibitors, and show staff to media and content creators - as well as the local communities that host our celebrations of all things gaming."

ReedPop/PennyArcade announced that, much like last year, an extended streaming event would be held in PAX East's stead. PAX Online will take place between July 15-18, and is expected to offer up news, reveals, and interviews pertaining to a wide variety of major and minor video game releases. The statement closes with optimism that 2021's remaining PAX events - PAX West and PAX Unplugged - might still go ahead as planned.

There’s a Monster Hunter Rise Bug that Can Break Your Save File, Here’s How to Avoid It

3 years 1 month ago

Monster Hunter Rise has a big launch weekend, and so far, we’re really enjoying our time with the game as well. That being said, players should certainly be careful as there’s a new bug that can potentially lock your save file and prevent you from logging in.

It’s worth noting that Capcom is already aware of the bug, and is actively working on a fix for it. Essentially, if you set either the Action or Hurt DLC poses (or both) to your action bar or radial menu in the game, and then quit out, the next time you boot up the game, you won’t be able to load your save.

It’s still possible to use these poses without breaking your save, but you need to use them from the start menu itself instead of assigning them to your action bar or radial menu. Capcom tweeted out about the bug today and informed players of the issue, and a fix should be coming soon.

In the meantime, be careful with those gestures while playing. Monster Hunter Rise is now available on Switch.

Utawarerumono ZAN 2 Announced for PS5 and PS4

3 years 1 month ago

Today Aquaplus announced a new game of the Utawarerumono series, Utawarerumono ZAN 2.

According to the news shared on Famitsu, the game will be released, at least in Japan on July 22, 2021, for PS4 and PS4.

It’s the sequel of the action RPG Utawarerumono ZAN, which was launched in 2019.

The story is based on Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth, but it has been extensively reimagined including new battle gameplay and the addition of new storytelling.

More information will be shared in the next issue of Weekly Famitsu, which will be released on Thursday, April 1. And no, it’s not a joke.

At the moment, there is no information about the possibility of a western release. The first Utawarerumono ZAN was released in the west bt NIS America, so it wouldn’t be surprising if the western arm of Nippon Ichi Software brought westward the sequel as well.

In the meanwhile, you can enjoy the first images below.

Moonglow Bay Is the Chill Fishing RPG I Never Knew I Needed Till I Saw It

3 years 1 month ago

Announced just a couple days back for Steam and Xbox Game Pass, Moonglow Bay is a brand new slice-of-life fishing RPG from Bunnyhug and Coatsink. And, well, it just looks absolutely adorable and is just what I need in my life right now.

You can check out the official announcement trailer down below:

The game starts when the player character decides to help their seemingly deceased partner to take over a small fishing business in an effort to keep it from going under. It’s set in a small town with a “fractured community” and is all about forging and nourishing relationships between the player character and other NPCs you meet along the way.

The voxel-based graphics and vibrant color palette certainly lends an inviting charm to the game that makes it look welcoming, and the actual fishing mechanics don’t look half bad either. There’s no set release date for the game just yet, and all we know is that it’s slated for a 2021 release.

We’ll keep you updated as more info comes our way, though you can bet I’ve already got this one on my Steam wishlist.

Electronic Arts Takes Another Swing At Golf With EA Sports PGA Tour

3 years 1 month ago

EA has pulled the curtain back on it’s new golf title, EA Sports PGA Tour. The game is billed as a next-gen golf experience and is the result of a new, long-term deal between the publisher and the PGA Tour.

There isn't a ton of info about the title as of yet. The press release does mention features such as building a virtual career and that players will compete on several of the “world’s most famous courses”. Events include The Players Championship and the FedExCup Playoffs.

EA’s Tibruron studio in Orlando, FL is developing EA Sports PGA Tour. The game is being made using the Frostbite engine which will, in EA’s words, offer “stunning fidelity, breathtaking immersive environments, and approachable, dynamic gameplay.”

“EA Sports and the PGA Tour have created some of the most memorable golf video game experiences together, and we couldn’t be more excited to expand our sports portfolio with a new golf title on next-gen hardware,” said Cam Weber, EVP & GM, EA Sports in the press release. “Our team of passionate golf fans is meticulously recreating the world’s top courses such as Pebble Beach, and we can’t wait to give fans the opportunity to compete on some of the most iconic PGA Tour courses and win the FedExCup."

EA promises to share more news, such as a release date, in the coming months.

In a short tweet, Hanke says progress is being made on "new kinds of devices" that leverage Niantic's AR platform. He also shared an image of the stem of what appear to be glasses, with some kind of strap with the Niantic logo. Flip your dad's crap laundromat into a local hotspot in Arcade Paradise

3 years 1 month ago

You know how it is with kids. You leave on vacation and next thing you know they've turned your failing small business into a nightlife enterprise. Classic 80s teen movie stuff, that. In Arcade Paradise, you'll help Ashley do just that while her dad Gerald is off in the Riviera, who's voiced by none other than Doug Cockle of Geralt of Rivia fame. More than just a collection of cabinet classics, Nosebleed Interactive say, Arcade Paradise will have you manage the laundry's transition from old hole in the wall to booming hotspot.

Hearthstone’s Forged In The Barrens Arrives Tomorrow. Here’s What To Expect

3 years 1 month ago

Tomorrow, 135 new cards enter Hearthstone from the new set, Forged in the Barrens. This Barrens-centric jaunt focuses on the titular World of Warcraft zone, full of animals, raptors, and of course, Mankrik’s wife. Yes, players can now live the meme in Hearthstone by actually finding Mankrik’s wife in the Barrens. At long last!

Click here to watch embedded media

The Barrens is just the beginning for this year of Hearthstone as the next few sets will sort of follow the leveling experience from World of Warcraft as players and characters “level up” from the Barrens to a mid-level zone and then to a high-tier one. I do hope the final path takes us somewhere cool with some raid stuff in it. You never know! I’m also really, really interested in the Mercenaries game mode that’s hitting later this year. But for now, let’s focus on the Barrens. There are some new key mechanics in play, and some of them you can even try out before tomorrow if you go play a few rounds in the Duels mode now.

PlayStation Store Shuts Down on PlayStation 3, Vita, and PSP This Summer

3 years 1 month ago

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced today that the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, and PlayStation Portable will be shut down this summer.

The stores for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable will end on July 2, and for PlayStation Vita on Aug. 27. After those dates, players will not be able to buy digital games, in-game purchases through games, and videos on the specific platforms.

Owners will still be able to re-download and play any digital titles purchased, access purchased videos, redeem game and PlayStation Plus vouchers, and re-download and play claimed game titles through PlayStation Plus as long as still subscribed to the service.

Sony said that cross-buy content is still possible, so any PlayStation 4 game that gave access to a PS3. PS Vita, or PSP version will still be available. The store’s closure will also not affect a PlayStation Now subscription, though any PlayStation Network funds left over can only be used for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 products.

The confirmation comes a week after The Gamer reported the announcement would be coming. The company has been trimming its online storefront after it had announced earlier this month it will be discontinuing video purchases and rentals from the PlayStation Store across all hardware on Aug. 31.

Turn a grim laundromat into a bustling 90s arcade in Vostok Inc. dev's Arcade Paradise

3 years 1 month ago

Vostok Inc. developer Nosebleed Interactive is trading space-capitalism for retro-tinged arcade management in its newly unveiled Arcade Paradise, coming to PC and consoles later this year.

In Arcade Paradise, players are cast as Ashley, a teenager trying to transform the family's small-town laundromat into a bustling retro arcade, somewhere in the 1990s.

What follows is a game of two halves; on the one side, Ashley will need to complete dull chores - washing clothes, clearing out the rubbish, cleaning toilets (all given a suitably entertaining mini-game twist) - in order to raise the money needed to turn the King Wash laundromat into a booming arcade hangout, managing the business and investing profits along the way.
