Fans hit back at plans to introduce premium QoL and XP boosts in New World

2 years 11 months ago

Players have hit back at plans to introduce a premium currency shop in Amazon's upcoming MMORPG, New World.

The leak - which comes via the game's current alpha-test and was shared on Reddit - alleges that New World is introducing in-game purchases for "special cosmetic items for players and their in-game homes" and "may sell quality-of-life items or boosts that will help players improve their time spent levelling up their character and trade skill experience".

In response, the official Twitter account for the studio developing the game posted a statement, insisting that "all store items at launch will be exclusively cosmetic in nature" and that the storefront was introduced in the Alpha test "to test these items and their value".

Get acquainted with Konami's Getsu Fuuma Den before playing Undying Moon

2 years 11 months ago

The announcement of GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon caught me off guard. It’s like running into your human wreckage of an ex. You thought all they did was gamble away their money constantly, but here they are talking about their new job like nothing ever happened. You start remembering all the good times, you dare to believe that maybe they’ve finally cleaned up their act. Maybe Konami has really changed and this is proof of that. Truthfully, I’m expecting to wake up and find my wallet and jewelry missing.

What’s weird about this, however, is that GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon is actually based on a Famicom exclusive title from 1987; Getsu Fuuma Den. It was never released in North America, it never received a sequel, all we got were some cameos in games like Castlevania: Harmony of Despair, while Japan would see him again in the Wai Wai World titles. I wouldn’t go as far as saying the series was forgotten, but when Konami is sitting on a treasure trove of marketable franchises, it’s strange to see them reach this far into the bucket.

Of course, it’s unlikely you’ll need to be versed in Getsu Fuuma Den to understand the new game. It’s technically a sequel taking place 1000 years later, with the actual core gameplay being completely different. There is a connection there for fans, but likely nothing so intense you’ll need to have the background. Nonetheless, let’s take a moment to get acquainted with Konami’s not-quite-classic.

Review: Subnautica: Below Zero

2 years 11 months ago

Subnautica was a survival game for people who thought they were sick of survival games.

Not only did it stand out in the genre with its one-of-a-kind alien water world, it also nailed a sense of genuine chart-your-own-course exploration. I felt like I had to work for every discovery, whether it was some bizarre biome or a new tool that would help me dive deeper, but it never felt like work. The game even had a pretty compelling sci-fi mystery to unravel, complete with an actual ending to reach.

In my 2018 review of the original Subnautica, I suggested that it might be the "best underwater game ever made." I stand by that today. Free-diving, recklessly piloting a submarine, stomping around the seafloor in a Prawn Suit — it felt fantastic to get to know Planet 4546B back then, and it still does now.

Three years later, after another Steam Early Access push, Unknown Worlds has put the finishing touches on Subnautica: Below Zero. Version 1.0 is done, and I'm glad I had enough restraint to hold off.

The Making of Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition

2 years 11 months ago

Metro Exodus's Enhanced Edition is a very important game - it's the first triple-A game we know of that's built on technology that demands the inclusion of hardware-accelerated ray tracing hardware. To be clear, the new Metro is not a fully path-traced game built entirely on RT, but rather a hybrid renderer where global illumination, lighting and shadows are handled by ray tracing, while other elements of the game still use traditional rasterisation techniques. The bottom line though is that this is the foundation for developer 4A Games going forward: its games will require a PC with hardware RT graphics capabilities, while their console versions will tap into the same acceleration features found on the ninth generation consoles. And while 4A is the first developer to push this far into next generation graphics features, it's clearly not going to be the last.

Take A Look At Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker In Action

2 years 11 months ago

Click to watch embedded media

This year's Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival may not have been the joyous gathering of fans that it has been in years past, but the move from an in-person event to a digital livestream still delivered plenty of surprises and excitement. The focus was intently on the forthcoming Endwalker expansion pack, which was announced to have a November 23 release date.

One of the biggest reveals was a new job called Reaper. Wielding a giant scythe that channels dark magics each time its swung, this role appears to be primarily close-range DPS, although you can see a ghostly transformation in the video below that appears to have some kind of a ranged magical attack. This job can only be accessed if the player has another at level 70, and is only available to people who purchased the Endwalker expansion.

Five '80s action stars who should definitely be in Call of Duty: Warzone

2 years 11 months ago

Next week sees perhaps the most bombastic crossover in gaming history. On May 20, Sylvester Stallone's John Rambo and Bruce Willis' Die Hard hero John McClane will step away from the silver screen to bring their respective brands of rat-a-tat-tat mayhem to Activision's Call of Duty franchise, joining the rosters of CoD: Black Ops, CoD: Mobile, and uber-popular battle royale release CoD: Warzone.

The Reganized 1980s saw a (literal) boom in action movies, as a staunchly conservative populace fell completely and utterly in love with solving the world's — or just the neighborhood's — problems at the barrel of an Uzi. While some of these films were dang awful, we also received an abundance of stone cold classics, with films such as RoboCop, Total Recall, and Commando as ridiculous and as entertaining today as they ever were.

I think the Call of Duty franchise is sitting on a veritable gold mine with its "'80s Action Stars" crossover event. Presented for your consideration are a further five stars of the decade taste forgot, without whom Call of Duty: Warzone will never, ever reach its full potential. No need to thank me, Activision, just pay me the 1600 COD Points I purchased last month that never arrived in my account.

Google wants you to know Stadia is still "alive and well"

2 years 11 months ago

Despite a recent flurry of exits and changes at the top, Google is keen for us to know that Stadia is "alive and well" and "focused on delivering value for [its] partners and on behalf of [its] players".

"We're well on our way to over 100 new games launching on Stadia in 2021, and we're continuing to make Stadia a great place to play games on devices you already own," Stadia developer marketing lead, Nate Ahearn, told our sister site GamesIndustry.biz.

"I'd tell any non-believers to take notice of how we're continuing to put our words into action, as we grow the Stadia Makers program and partner with AAA studios like Capcom, EA, Square Enix, Ubisoft, and others."

500,000 cheaters have been banned from Call of Duty: Warzone

2 years 11 months ago

Over half a million Call of Duty: Warzone accounts have now been banned for cheating.

After banning a further 30,000 unscrupulous players yesterday, Warzone co-developer Raven Software confirmed that that brings the total of banned accounts to a staggering 500,000.

Raven didn't elaborate on whether or not this was on a single platform or shared across all of them, nor what the cheaters were actually doing to warrant the ban hammer - but at least it shows that the studio takes cheating seriously, and is holding cheaters to account.

Review: Famicom Detective Club

2 years 11 months ago

It was quite a surprise when Nintendo announced it was remaking and localizing its Famicom Detective Club titles for the Nintendo Switch. The games, originally released in Japan for the Famicom Disk System, are two of the few early gaming titles from Nintendo's repertoire that haven't been reintroduced to new audiences. Outside of a Super Famicom remake of the second game, both have happily existed as footnotes in Nintendo's extensive library.

But story-driven games are as popular as they've ever been, and with the Switch still red hot, there is no better time than now for Nintendo to pull these two relics from the past and into the modern era.

Huntdown for Steam is slicker and sicker than ever before

2 years 11 months ago

[Update: Huntdown is now live on Steam, early purchases will bag a 20% price discount.]

There's no denying 2020 was an explosive year for video games. But among the mega-bucks, mega-marketed, mega-sellers of the industry, smaller titles were still keeping it real, making names for themselves off of the back of hard effort, great design, hard effort, and solid gameplay.

In this regard, Coffee Stain Publishing's Huntdown completely won me over last spring, going on to become one of my most played games of the year. Developed in Unity by tiny Swedish outfit Easy Trigger Games, Huntdown overcame its budgetary shortcomings by accentuating its positives: awesome pixel graphics, a hard-hitting soundtrack, superb sound design, and raw, compelling, shamelessly violent gameplay. Huntdown is a dirty, dirty gem.

FFXIV Patch 5.55 And Full PS5 Version Launch May 25, Here Are The Details

2 years 11 months ago

The second day of Final Fantasy Fan Fest 2021 kicked off with a Live Letter From the Producer, the regularly scheduled livestream that outlines each major update to Final Fantasy XIV. Director and producer Naoki Yoshida led the presentation and detailed what's coming to patch 5.55 with regards to the new main story quests, the Save the Queen questline, the full PS5 version of the game, and much more. Lead story designer Natsuko Ishikawa also joined the presentation to discuss her work in creating FFXIV's narrative.

Patch 5.55 is set to go live on May 25 and it'll be the last major update leading into the upcoming Endwalker expansion. Additionally, the PS5 version of the game will officially go into service on May 25--this updated version of the game went into live beta in April and has been playable ever since for owners of the PS4 version playing on PS5, so the official service date is more of a formality.

FFXIV on the PS5 supports native 4K resolution, higher frame rates, a high resolution UI, DualSense haptic feedback, new trophies, and 3D audio support. There are also graphics options for 1440p resolution and better frame rate and 1080p for an even consistent frame rate. Owners of the PS4 version of the game can upgrade to the PS5 version for free. You can read about our experience and watch gameplay footage of the PS5 beta for FFXIV in our previous coverage.

The Community Spotlight 2021.05.15

2 years 11 months ago

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight and I, @zombiepie, am once again honored to be your host as we look back at the week that was on and around Giant Bomb. First, I want to share a big "thank you" to the outpour of support the last episode of the Spotlight got. It was truly heartwarming to see users both new and old come out of the woodwork to share their lover for the site and their feelings about Vinny, Alex, and Brad. In the days that followed their final appearance as staff, it has really set-in that the site no longer has them. It's different. The site is different. Yes, things were bound to be different, but it's so difficult to express the mixture of excitement and concern about the uncharted waters Giant Bomb is about to explore without sounding like an inconsiderate jerk or total buzzkill.

I speak for myself and my fellow moderators that it is appreciated to all of you who have expressed this bundle of conflicting emotions in a way that has avoided rumor mongering, speculation, or "fantasy booking." This sort of commentary does not help anyone, especially those who you would like to see join the site. With that in mind, let's jump into the site-related housekeeping.

Final Fantasy XIV Will Add Male Viera (Bunny Boys) In Endwalker; Female Hrothgar At A Later Time

2 years 11 months ago

Many details for the upcoming expansion Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker were given during the keynote presentation for Final Fantasy Fan Fest 2021--including the new Reaper job, the official release date, new story details, and so much more. But let's be honest, for some, the introduction of the playable male Viera race stole the show. This was revealed through a short teaser trailer showing off the male Viera in action and with their glamour and emotes, which you can watch below.

The bunny-like Viera originated in Final Fantasy XII and were first introduced to FFXIV with the 2019 expansion Shadowbringers, but were only available as female in the MMORPG. The limitation of implementing only one sex for the race was said to be due to limited development resources. But with fan demand and interest for male Viera maintaining, the FFXIV team is following up by bringing them to the next expansion Endwalker.
