Rough-and-tumble vehicle sim SnowRunner is coming to Xbox Game Pass

2 years 11 months ago

If you've been eager to brave the treacherous roads behind the wheel of massive vehicles, a pretty good option is coming to Xbox Game Pass. SnowRunner hits Microsoft's subscription service on Xbox consoles and Windows PC tomorrow, May 17.

Carrying forward the MudRunner legacy, SnowRunner has you drive a bunch of different vehicles across rain, snow, and more. Yes, that also includes mud.

Games like Euro Truck Simulator have made it apparent that driving around from point A to point B can be serene and relaxing, but if you're looking for a challenge, SnowRunner might be able to offer that. Putting a snorkel on your exhaust to handle heavy water certainly sounds pretty hardcore.

Mario Golf: Super Rush has a mode where you race across courses on foot

2 years 11 months ago

Nintendo has shown off an extended look at several new modes coming to Mario Golf: Super Rush, as well as the game's full character roster.

Speed Golf is a fresh mode where players race each other on foot across the golf course in-between taking shots. (If only karts existed in Mario's world!)

While dashing, players can use items to regain stamina and special attacks to thwack the ball/other players out of the way. (Seriously, why isn't Mario Golf Kart a thing?)

Stadia heads want Stadians to know platform is 'alive and well'

2 years 11 months ago

Google has stated that cloud gaming platform Stadia is "alive and well." The statement comes from the industry giant following a slew of headlines that suggest the Stadia platform — still in its relative infancy — is suffering from numerous setbacks.

"We're well on our way to over 100 new games launching on Stadia in 2021, and we're continuing to make Stadia a great place to play games on devices you already own," said development marketing lead Nate Ahearn in a statement to GamesIndustry.biz. "I'd tell any non-believers to take notice of how we're continuing to put our words into action, as we grow the Stadia Makers program and partner with AAA studios like Capcom, EA, Square Enix, Ubisoft and others."

The words come in the wake of numerous eyebrow-raising headlines concerning Stadia's direction. Following disappointing first-year sales, Google announced it was closing its internal game development studios in February of 2021 — a decision that led to an exodus of developers, including producer Jade Raymond, who has since formed her own studio and with several former Stadia staff. This was followed by the news that Stadia's VP & Head of Product, John Justice, had also left Google. Justice's role has since been filled by Stadia co-founder Dov Zimring.

Twitch Begins Adjusting Sub Prices Based On Where Viewers Live

2 years 11 months ago

While the USD 4.99 per month cost of a Tier 1 Twitch subscription works fine here in the States, five bucks can be a much larger hit on one’s wallet in other countries. Starting this week with Mexico and Turkey, Twitch will begin adjusting subscription costs to better align with the local cost of living.

How Total War: Warhammer's players built themselves a World Championship

2 years 11 months ago

In the end, the finals of the 2021 Total War: Warhammer World Championship come down to an overextension. French finalist Alfredino’s Archmage of Fire, leading his High Elves from the back of a giant eagle, pushes past the safety provided by ranks of elite archers. His Russian opponent Evenstar's Wood Elf caster drops a Tempest spell. The arcane whirlwind plays havoc with Alfredino’s Archmage, leaving the elf caster wounded and near immobilised. It’s then the Wood Elves’ deadly arrows come, sealing the Archmage’s fate.

Losing a general is always a morale hit, but for players this practised, it isn’t always a death sentence. In this case it’s a disadvantage Alfredino, despite some excellent cavalry plays, never quite manages to recover from. The finals wrap, and Evenstar takes the lion’s share of the $4,200 prize pool. A relatively humble figure, as far as organised e-sports go, but this isn’t some sponsored, glitzy event.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition changes infamous photo of Tali

2 years 11 months ago

As players have been tearing through all three games in the Mass Effect Legendary Edition, they've been discovering the changes that have been made throughout the trilogy. One in particular addresses a very well-known photo that can appear in Shepard's cabin.

(Spoilers for Mass Effect 3 follow)

During the course of Mass Effect 3, Shepard can carry on a romance with a number of different crewmates, including quarian squadmate Tali. In the course of her romance, Shepard can even end up with a photo of her in their cabin.

In the original Mass Effect 3, this photo turned out to be an edit of a stock photo that didn't sit well with some folks. Now, with the Legendary Edition, BioWare has replaced the old picture with a new one, as confirmed by Reddit user "Maxgoods" and others.

New Dying Light 2 Video Shares More About The Story, Open-World Events, Factions, And More

2 years 11 months ago

It looks like the dry spell of Dying Light 2 news is finally over, because this is the second video we've had in a short amount of time offering more insight into the highly anticipated sequel from Techland. As part of an ongoing developer update video series for the studio, the latest episode puts associate producer Julia Szynkaruk center stage to talk more about the story, the characters players will meet, factions, and quite a bit more.

In the video, Szynakurk talked about a few details previously confirmed, including that the 15-year time jump of the sequel means that we will not see any familiar faces from the first game. That being said, that doesn't mean Kyle Crane's efforts were in vain, the new story will reflect back on Crane's role in the franchise frequently. Techland even teases ways that his decisions will impact the second game, though how exactly that goes down is up to players to find out.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition Fixes Weird Tali Photoshopped Cabin Photo

2 years 11 months ago

The Mass Effect Legendary Edition is out now and so many of our readers have been sharing their Commander Shepards with us. While many newcomers are joining the Normandy for the first time, veterans of the franchise are having a great time exploring what's new in this familiar universe. If you were a fan of the original trilogy, you probably remember the conversation that centered around the very badly photoshopped Tali photo in Shepard's cabin. While we still don't get to see this mysterious Quarian's face in a cutscene like we'd like, we do at least have an updated photo for those that romanced this little cutie.

For those that may be unfamiliar, Quarians are a race of alien beings that are forced to wear bodysuits that are completely enclosed due to weakened immune systems following a war with the Geth. The Geth are a race of AI built by the Quarians, a race that was slaughtered when they started to show signs of true intelligence. The war chased the Quarians from their homeworld, forever changing their daily lives and forcing them to hide their true faces behind a helmet.

Walsall council criticised for enormous "Super Mario" plant pots

2 years 11 months ago

The arrival of 15 enormous green plant pots in Walsall has prompted criticism from local residents, who say they're a waste of public cash and look like "something from Super Mario Brothers".

Walsall council has been slammed for splashing taxpayer pounds on the oversized planters, which have been arranged throughout the town centre.

Birmingham Mail reported that the spending has come at a time its local authority is being asked to cut £29m from its budget - and these plant pots don't look Cheep Cheep.

World of Warcraft previews its new eight-boss Mythic mega-dungeon, and oh my God we're ready for new content

2 years 11 months ago

I'm officially in the "log in and do my weeklies" phase of World of Warcraft.

Look, the past year hasn't been easy on anyone, especially game developers. But right now World of Warcraft: Shadowlands has a severe content drought, and unfortunately, the studio didn't pivot to give us smaller content drops over time. Instead, we have to wait for the new Chains of Domination update to arrive. It's one of the longest waits between major content patches to date, and I feel it.

Thankfully, Chains does look like it's shaping up to be a fun romp so far, especially after this recent preview of the new eight-boss Mythic mega-dungeon. It's called Tazavesh: the Veiled Market, and it runs the gamut of insane-looking and likely-fun-to-fight bosses.

Timecap’n Hooktail, a giant dragon who Hulked out after having her heist hijacked, rules. I'm glad Blizzard is still experimenting with silly boss fights every now and then. So’leah, the final boss, also looks sufficiently epic, and I love how she fits into the overarching story of the in-universe cartel. I'm getting big Court of Stars vibes here and I love it.

A Blizzard community manager also hopped into the comments section to explain how it's going to work: "you will need to follow a (short) questline to locate the new mega-dungeon. Once you arrive there, you can learn a flight path and travel easily between there and Oribos [the new main hub]."

Mario Golf: Super Rush - Here's Where to Preorder

2 years 11 months ago
Mario Golf: Super Rush is set to release exclusively for Nintendo Switch on June 25. But those interested in picking up a copy don't have to wait to lock a copy down for themselves: it's available now to preorder from a number of retailers (see it at Amazon, or Amazon UK). Like most other first-party Nintendo games, it's only available in a standard edition, but that's all you really need if you want to hit the fairway and swing a club in the Mushroom Kingdom.

Preorder Mario Golf: Super Rush

mario-golf-super-rush-blogroll Mario Golf: Super Rush is the latest installment in the sporty series. This time around you get a shot gauge and a scanner that can help you set up your shots for maximum precision. The game also lets you forego mashing buttons to use your Joy-Con as a motion controller to take shots. And if standard golf isn't exciting enough for you, you can play several additional modes to spice things up.

Assassin's Creed fans translate all of Valhalla's Vinland dialogue

2 years 11 months ago

Assassin's Creed fansite Access the Animus has worked with Montreal's Kanien'kehá:ka Onkwawén:na Raotitióhkwa Language and Cultural Center to translate all of the unsubtitled dialogue in Valhalla's Vinland arc.

The video below reveals what is being said in all of the conversations going on around Eivor in this part of the game, which she (and you) are deliberately left unable to understand.

As well as dialogue, it includes translations of item descriptions and more. There's also a fascinating explanation of the Mohawk creation myth Eivor hears around the campfire - previously told by the Oneida tribe in Assassin's Creed Rogue. Intriguingly, there are differences in the stories which accurately depict the differences in its telling by the two tribes.

New Mario Golf: Super Rush trailer shows off its modes, from speed and battle to single-player adventure

2 years 11 months ago

The Mario sports spin-offs have always taken a broader, zanier approach to their respective athletic past-times. In the latest trailer for the upcoming Mario Golf: Super Rush, it definitely seems like the trend is carrying forward, with a surprising number of modes to boot.

Today's trailer showcases some of the modes included in Super Rush, both multiplayer and single-player. On the competitive side, we've already seen Speed Golf, the fast-paced race to the finish where golfers can use special abilities to get ahead. Battle Golf is one step further: a Speed Golf variant with multiple holes to capture, in an almost Mario Kart-like battle arena.

Of course, there's still standard golf with a host of quality-of-life features. Mario Golf: Super Rush will also have a solo mode called Golf Adventure, where players can take their Mii through the ranks at a country club, completing a variety of challenges and leveling up in the process.

As someone who bounced off Mario Tennis Aces after a week or so, I'm eagerly looking forward to this one. The single-player side seems like it's got some interesting challenges to hold the player's attention, and I am all about the bonkers battle modes. I'm really just here for the incredibly good golf attire—did you see Bowser's visor?—but it looks like Mario Golf: Super Rush is gearing up to bring some more good golfin' to the Switch on June 25.

Sony Files Patent for Betting Service That Could Accept Bitcoin or In-Game Items

2 years 11 months ago
Sony Interactive Entertainment has filed a patent for a platform that would allow users to bet on esports using physical currency, bitcoin, or even in-game items. According to a listing on PatentScope, Sony initially filed the patent in 2019, but has only published it this month. The patent itself suggests a system where viewers of livestreamed esports events, such as fighting game tournaments, would be able to bet on the outcome of matches whilst watching the action play out in real time. The system would work via a user interface overlay that could be brought up over the stream in order for the user to place their bets. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/04/16/ps5-stock-to-be-limited-in-first-year-says-report-ign-news"] Bets placed could seemingly come in many forms, with the patent mentioning that "Wagers may be pecuniary, e.g., money or bitcoin, or may be non-pecuniary, e.g., game assets, digital rights, and virtual currency." That implies that you could earn and then bet, in-game currency, or even in-game items using the system. It's also possible that wagering "digital rights" could point to bets using NFTs (non-fungible tokens) in games. Odds for those wagers would be determined via machine learning, based off either the play history of the competing players, or their performance in the current match. Interestingly, the patent was not exclusively focused on Playstation, as it also references “game consoles such as Sony PlayStation or a game console made by Microsoft or Nintendo or other manufacturer virtual reality (VR) headsets, augmented reality (AR) headsets, portable televisions (e.g. smart TVs, Internet-enabled TVs), portable computers such as laptops and tablet computers, and other mobile devices including smart phones”.

Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis has a lot of potential, based on the beta

2 years 11 months ago

Look, Sega doesn't have to sell me on a new Phantasy Star Online project.

It's been... a while since we've gotten one of those. I mean the west just got PSO 2 recently, which is great! But the prospect of starting something on a completely level playing field, at the ground level, is extremely enticing.

Based on what I've played of the PSO2: New Genesis beta, I'm even more jazzed for that day to come.
