2D Fighting Games The Rumble Fish & Sequel Announced for Consoles; Coming in Winter 2022

1 year 10 months ago

Today 3goo announced that Dimps’ 2D fighting games The Rumble Fish and The Rumble Fish 2 will come to consoles.

While the specific platforms have not been announced yet, we know that it’ll launch worldwide in winter 2022.

If you’re not familiar with The Rumble Fish series, it’s a franchise of 2D fighting games developed by Dimps and launched in the Japanese arcades in 2004. A PS2 version of the game was also released the following year.

The second game, The Rumble Fish 2, was released in the arcades in 2005 and it never made it officially to consoles, until now. It added new gameplay systems and plenty of new characters.

Known for their smooth anime-style animation thanks to the S.M.A. (Smooth Model Animation) tech, the series is fairly well known in Japan, but pretty obscure in the west, since it never was officially released in the arcades in Europe or North America.

The gameplay uses two different kinds of gauges (offense and defense) and the games still have a cult following among Japanese arcade enthusiasts.

With 2D fighting games enjoying a surge in popularity as of late, this certainly appears to be a good time for a returning contender in this industry.

Below you can enjoy a story trailer introducing some of the characters of the franchise.

Dead or Alive Creator Tomonobu Itagaki Making Warrior NFT Game

1 year 10 months ago

Warrior

Tomonobu Itagaki, former head of Koei Tecmo's Team Ninja, has a new studio. He's also working on a new game, called Warrior, an NFT Massive Multiplayer Online RPG (MMORPG). Itagaki's new studio, called Apex Game Studios, will specialize in developing "triple-A Web3 titles." "Web3" is a catchphrase for blockchain-related internet technologies, including NFTs (non-fungible tokens), cryptocurrencies, and "decentralized finances." Virtual reality social and commercial spaces like the "Metaverse" are often classified as part of "Web3" but don't necessarily require blockchain or cryptocurrency technology to work. Warrior is built on the Unreal engine and slated for initial release early in 2023, with mobile platforms and PC targeted.

Actual details about how Warrior will play or what it will look like are sparse, though. The official site contains some copy laying out the premise of the game, which is that players are on a journey to claim the power of the "King Warrior." Gameplay descriptions promise an upgrade system using randomly generated gear, "tribal territory," and "mob servants" that can be traded back and forth. Much of the site's content is dedicated to explaining the Warrior NFT economy.

Newly-Elected Mangaka & Politician Ken Akamatsu Pushing Legislation to Preserve Retro Games in Japan

1 year 10 months ago

Popular mangaka Ken Akamatsu has been elected to the House of Councillors of the National Diet of Japan only a few days ago, but he is wasting absolutely zero time and he’s already working to push legislation in favor of his fellow geeks.

Akamatsu-sensei mentioned on his official Twitter account that a team of select experts has been formed within the Legal System Subcommittee’s Digital Rights team of the Digital Archive Society to start working on the “legal preservation of past games in a playable state.

He added that the archiving and usability of old content that is going lost is a topic that he’s strongly passionate about, so he wants to help this become a success.

Game preservation has been an ongoing problem, with many older games becoming unplayable or going completely as the years pass.

Akamatsu-sensei was elected as a member of the House of Councillors last Sunday after running with the ruling Liberal Democratic Party on a campaign mostly centered on protecting creators’ freedom of expression and artistic freedom from censorship and undue external influences.

Loopmancer Review

1 year 10 months ago

Something occurred to me as I poured hour after hour into Loopomancer: Roguelites have become so ubiquitous that playing a new one has become a sort of meta-loop of its own. It can feel like you are playing through a remixed version of the same concepts, just with different titles and gimmicks, time and again – lather, rinse and repeat. To stand out, a game must either do something extremely creative, or distinguish itself with quality and polish. Loopmancer, which follows in the footsteps of other 2D action platformer roguelites such as Rogue Legacy and Dead Cells, opted for the latter – to great success. None of its mechanics are groundbreaking, and the cyberpunk story – while cool – is filled with cliches. But after riding this loop for close to 20 hours it’s clear to me that what it lacks in originality it more than makes up for by nailing the most important elements of the genre: outstanding gameplay, and making each run fresh and meaningful.

You play as Xiang Zixu, a generic tough-guy detective in techno-futurist Dragon City, who has been killed while investigating a missing person. Immediately after dying he wakes up in his bed, on the same morning of that same day, and given the same dispatch to investigate the same missing person. It’s a tried-and-true time loop formula, and effective as a premise for a roguelite. Zixu doesn’t have much in the way of personality, but it is enjoyable to listen to him impatiently explain to his handler at the detective agency that he already knows everything that is going to happen.

PUBG Update Adds New Deston Map With Swamps and Skyscrapers

1 year 10 months ago

PUBG: Battlegrounds received an update for the live game on PC and consoles today, bringing the game’s ninth map with new features, another battle pass, and more.

The biggest addition in the update is the new map called Deston, an 8x8km space that contains a variety of environments such as mountains, swamps, an outdoor concert venue, a hydroelectric dam, and a city. The official PUBG website is even hosting a tour of all the different biomes that can be viewed in virtual reality.

The city is most interesting as it is flooded with shallow water and contains the new “Ascenders,” which are mechanical ropes that can send players from the ground top to the top of skyscrapers in seconds. Ascenders are also used for Cell Towers scattered around the map, and will propel players high into the air where a parachute will automatically deploy to get back down safely. It is very similar to the Jump Towers of Apex Legends, as it is used to quickly get around the map.

Apex Legends Gets New Seer Lore, And Now The Community Is Out For Blood

1 year 10 months ago

After teasing it within Apex Legends for weeks, Respawn has finally deemed fit to deliver us some more lore for Seer with a new animated short. Though the lore is delicious, it's come at the cost of mental and emotional damage being dealt to one of Apex Legends' most beloved characters, and now the community is up in arms, asking for the blood of a reporter.

The reporter in question is Lisa Stone, the resident journalist in the world of Apex Legends and one of the game's few main characters who isn't also a playable legend. Lisa was the reporter that stood opposite Forge as Revenant murdered him, as well as the one to rally support for Duardo Silva (Octane's grandfather) in his bid to take control of The Syndicate, the governing body of the Outlands and overseer of the Apex Games.

Bayonetta 3 Is “Sexier than Ever” But “Naive Angel Mode” Lets You Censor Partial Nudity

1 year 10 months ago

Today PlatinumGames announced that Bayonetta 3 will let the player decide what they want to see in terms of nudity.

Developer PlatinumGames itself issued a cheeky tweet mentioning that Bayonetta is “sexier than ever” in the new game, but instead of censoring it for everyone, the power has been put in the hands on the players.

You can activate the “revolutionary” Naive Angel Mode, designed to let more people fully enjoy the game by covering the instances of partial nudity for Bayonetta herself and other characters.

This should allow everyone to play in the living room without having to worry about who may be watching.

The tweet also includes a video that showcases the mode in action (I suppose you may consider it very slightly not safe for work).

Evil Dead: The Game Adds Army Of Darkness Update Update With New Map, Exploration Mode, And More

1 year 10 months ago

Saber Interactive and Boss Team Games have released a new update today for their co-op PvP/PvE multiplayer game Evil Dead: The Game. The new Army of Darkness-themed update introduces that movie's Castle Kandar location as a map, as well as weapons, cosmetics, and a new single-player Exploration mode. Army of Darkness is the third installment in the Evil Dead franchise, and is about Ash Williams fighting an army of Deadites in the past while trying to get back home.

The Army of Darkness map is free and features many iconic locations from the film, such as Castle Kandar, Windmill, the Arthurian Outpost, Fort Gort, and the Castle Kandar Keep. In addition to the new map, you can also use two new weapons: the Mace, which is a slow but powerful close-range weapon, and the Explosive Crossbow, which has a slow reload time but packs a punch.

In the single-player Exploration mode, you can freely roam Castle Kandar and all the other maps. However, you'll still be dealing with Deadites as you explore, making it a potentially great way to improve your skills as a survivor.

You can now purchase the Ash Williams S-Mart Employee Outfit and the Ash Williams Gallant Knight Outfit from Army of Darkness for $2.99 each. TMNT Shredder's Revenge One Million Copies

Everyone's favorite butt-kicking turtles are likely throwing a pizza party as TMNT: Shredder's Revenge has surpassed more than one million copies sold. In a  press release, the CEO of Dotemu, Cyrille Imbert, excitedly stated:

"TMNT: Shredder's Revenge is the game I dreamed of working on ever since I began watching the original cartoon and funneling coins into the TMNT arcade cabinets as a kid," said Cyrille Imbert, CEO of Dotemu. "We are immensely grateful to Nickelodeon for the opportunity to honor an era of TMNT that profoundly impacted the lives of everyone at Dotemu, and to our friends at Tribute Games for expertly capturing the classic thrill of the Turtles' battles with the Foot Clan in a new experience that feels completely fresh and exciting to play."

Marcus Stewart reviewed Shredder's Revenge and awarded it an 8.75 out of 10. He concluded his review by saying, "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge gives me what I wanted: a polished, raucously fun throwback that plays better than how I remember the original games. Turtles fans new and old will find plenty to love, but those possessing a nostalgia for this era of the franchise are in for the biggest treat. Pokémon Fossil Museum Virtual Tour Lets You See the Japanese Exhibit For Yourself

1 year 10 months ago

The Pokémon Company and Toyohashi Museum of Natural History have made it possible to see the Pokémon Fossil Museum without being anywhere near Japan. Pokémon fans can now take a virtual tour around the exhibit — which is open until November — to see the collection of real and Pokémon fossils, from a tyrannosaurus to a Tyrantrum.

Designed to teach children about fossils and dinosaurs, the exhibit includes models of Pokémon side-by-side with fossilised versions and information panels to educate amid the fun.

The incentive began last year in the city of Hokkaido before moving to Shimane and then Tokyo, before arriving in Toyohashi this week. Though nothing is confirmed, the official website states that further venues may be announced later so the Pokémon Fossil Museum may move somewhere else after it closes in November.

Ancient Pokémon obtained through fossils have always existed in the games and anime, and just like the normal pocket monsters (Pikachu being the mouse Pokémon), they're based on species in the real world.

Going through some of the Pokémon in the exhibit, for example, Omanyte is based on a prehistoric creature called an ammonite, Aerodactyl is based on pterosaurs, and Bastiodon is based on ceratopsian dinosaurs such as the triceratops.

Ms. Marvel Post Credits Scene Explained

1 year 10 months ago

Confused about what exactly happened during Ms. Marvel’s post-credits scene? Trust me, you are not alone. Just about everyone is wondering what the heck exactly happened and how THAT character could have appeared. Here is everything you need to know about what is going on.

Ms. Marvel Post Credits Scene

Rumors that Carol Danvers, aka Ms. Marvel, aka Kamala Khan’s hero, would be showing up at the end of Captain Marvel have been running rampant ever since the show was conceptualized. When she does finally show up in the post-credit scene, though, it’s a pretty confusing sequence.

After a blast of energy knocks Kamala through her bedroom closet door, it isn’t the plucky teenager superhero that reappears, instead, it’s a confused Carol Danvers. She looks around the room at all of the pictures that Khan has up on her wall and panics before running out the door. So what is happening?

Did Ms. Marvel Transform Into Captain Marvel?

Before we go too far into it, it’s important to note that the character in that scene is indeed Carol Danvers. It isn’t Kamala shapeshifting into her or anything like that, which is evident by the confused look that Danvers gives at all of the memorabilia that is in the room.

If it was a shape-shifted Kamala, she wouldn’t look that confused at her own room. So the answer is no, Ms. Marvel doesn’t transform into Captain Marvel. So how did Danvers get in her room?

Surprising Reveal at the End Of Ms. Marvel Has Massive Implications for the MCU’s Future

1 year 10 months ago

The first season of Ms. Marvel just ended, with episode 6 featuring plenty of shocking developments that are set to turn the MCU on its head. Alongside a surprise appearance from Captain Marvel, the end of the show pretty much just confirmed the existence of two really big things.

Are Mutants Canon in the MCU?

The first is that mutants are official canon in the MCU on Earth 616. This comes about during a conversation that Bruno and Kamala are having near the end of the episode when discussing her powers.

To be exact, it is about why Kamala seems to be the only one in her immediate family with the ability to use the bangle and her superpowers. Bruno’s exact words are “Kamala, there’s something different in your genes; like a mutation.”

While that may not necessarily sound like it confirms Mutants in the MCU, there is one huge thing that occurs right after Bruno says this that undeniably confirms it. While brief, the official X-Men 97 opening theme can be heard playing.

Are the X-Men in the MCU?

While we haven’t seen any X-Men in the MCU on Earth 616, the fact that the word mutation was used in Ms. Marvel and the X-Men 97 theme played pretty much confirmed we are getting the X-Men soon. This is the first real confirmation we’ve gotten that mutants exist, outside of the fact that Charles Xavier does appear in Multiverse of Madness, of course.

Contrary To Rumor, Assassin's Creed Infinity Seemingly Won't Feature An Aztec Setting

1 year 10 months ago

Following the release of the next Assassin's Creed game, codenamed Rift, Ubisoft will supposedly then work on releasing Assassin's Creed Infinity. Infinity will be a live-service game, reportedly including a bunch of different experiences--one of which, apparently, specifically won't be Aztec despite recent rumors.

"The next [Assassin's Creed] game is Rift, which is set in Baghdad," Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier wrote on Reddit. "After that will be [Assassin's Creed] Infinity, and while that's going to include a bunch of different games/experiences/biomes/whatever you want to call them, I've heard about the main two and neither of them are Aztec."

Schreier made the post in response to a report from video game YouTuber and reviewer Jeremy Penter, who said, in a tweet, "Next AC game will be Aztecs." Only time will tell which of the two is right.

Ubisoft has not confirmed the existence of Rift, but it has talked about Infinity, which will be developed in a new cross-studio structure between Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Quebec. Infinity won't be free-to-play, and will reportedly launch in 2024 or later. The game will act as a platform from which Assassin's Creed can grow going forward, allowing Ubisoft to explore a wider variety of different experiences.

Naraka Bladepoint Is Getting A Fall Guys Crossover Mode

1 year 10 months ago

Naraka Bladepoint, the melee-focused battle royale game, is getting a new mode as part of a Fall Guys crossover event. The new mode, called Through The Fire, features obstacles inspired by the battle royale party game as part of an official crossover event.

One of the more unusual video game crossovers in recent history, the Through The Fire mode features a bunch of Fall Guys inspired decorations in the loading area, adding some bright colors to the more-realistic fantasy world. The game mode itself appears to be the typical "last person standing wins," but with a twist.

In Through The Fire, there are multiple massive swinging pendulums that can knock players off the small island, killing them. You will need to avoid the pendulums to get the loot spawning in the middle of the map. There are also two Souljades specific to this mode, both giving you the power to knock enemies back, which can be used to launch enemies off the small map. The video doesn't say how many players are in each map, but the play area is much smaller than a typical Naraka Bladepoint map. The trailer doesn't show any Fall Guys inspired cosmetics, so the crossover might be limited to the special mode.

It also doesn't seem like the crossover is going to work both ways, as Fall Guys has not announced any Naraka Bladepoint costumes for the game and it has a new, unrelated event kicking off tomorrow. Naraka Bladepoint is available on PC and Xbox Series X|S and is included in Xbox Game Pass.

A Deep Dive On Sonic Frontiers Combat And Boss Battles

1 year 10 months ago

Sonic Frontiers

Sega's speedy blue hedgehog has been smashing Badniks since his first encounter with a Motobug in Green Hill Zone, but combat has always played second fiddle to the speed and platforming of the franchise. While certain games like Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Sonic and the Black Knight, and Sonic Forces have experimented with new combat mechanics for the games' protagonists to use, Sonic Frontiers looks to evolve that gameplay component in unprecedented ways.

When Sonic Team set out to create Sonic Frontiers, it wanted to give players more freedom with which to operate. It did this by introducing a new open-zone concept, where players are able to run through and explore various biomes without a predefined path to guide their gameplay. That shift from largely linear stages to a large open zone represents perhaps the biggest shift in how this new Sonic the Hedgehog game plays out, but as I traversed Kronos Island during my three-plus hours of hands-on time, the combat held a much larger role than I expected.

"Sonic games have a long history as stage-clear action games and because of that, there hasn't been a huge focus on battle and combat in Sonic's history," director Morio Kishimoto says. "But for this title, we are implementing a core battle structure to the game as it was imperative in creating a fun new open-zone game system"
