A New Mass Effect Project Is In Development with 'Veteran Team'

3 years 5 months ago
BioWare has confirmed that a new Mass Effect game is in development. Announced on N7 Day alongside the news that the long-awaited Mass Effect: Legendary Edition will arrive in 2021, this new game will feature a "veteran team" from BioWare and will be the "next chapter of the Mass Effect universe." While BioWare isn't sharing any more details about this new project, it did share an image that gives a tease of the future of Mass Effect. MassEffectBR While this project may be far away, the Mass Effect Legendary Edition will be arriving on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in Spring 2021. It will also have "forward compatibility and targeted enhancements on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5." The Mass Effect: Legendary Edition gathers together all the single-player base content and DLC from Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3, and all promo weapons, armors, packs, all remastered and optimized for 4K Ultra HD. Mass Effect was first released on Xbox 360 in 2008 and began an epic trilogy where your choices mattered and would carry with you through the next two games. Mass Effect 2 was released in 2010 and Mass Effect 3 ended the story in 2012.

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition Brings Back Original Trilogy In 2021

3 years 5 months ago

Electronic Arts and BioWare have officially confirmed a Mass Effect trilogy release--called Mass Effect: Legendary Edition--for consoles and PC. The announcement was made as part of its N7 Day celebration, and it comes after months of reports and rumors about the collection.

The collection bundles together Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3, which originally released between 2007 and 2012. The original Mass Effect released as an Xbox 360 exclusive before eventually coming to PlayStation 3 several years later. BioWare's games have been multiplatform releases since then.

The new versions will not be full remakes, but BioWare intends to improve them so players can experience them in their "best possible form[s]," according to the official announcement. That means better resolutions and frame rates, and all single-player DLC and promotional items will also be included. Elements such as textures, shaders, character models, and effects will all be improved for the Legendary Edition.

New Mass Effect Officially In Development With Veteran Team

3 years 5 months ago

Many of us assumed that BioWare was going to announce a Mass Effect trilogy collection during N7 Day today, but we didn't expect this other piece of news: A new Mass Effect game is in development.

Details on the project are extremely scarce, but BioWare is working on the "next chapter of the Mass Effect universe" and it will feature a "veteran team" from the company. It's unclear who will be involved in the project, as original creative director Casey Hudson now leads the entire studio. Mass Effect: Andromeda creative director Mac Walters appears to still be with the company and served as a writer on the original games as well as Jade Empire. The latter game was an original Xbox exclusive. It never received a sequel but is considered one of the studio's better games.

Andromeda wasn't as well-received as the earlier games, with criticism directed at its story, character animations, and quest design. In GameSpot's Mass Effect: Andromeda review, critic Scott Butterworth also found technical issues and disliked the characters.

BioWare has confirmed a brand new Mass Effect game is in development as well as the just-announced Mass Effect Legendary Edition.

As part of N7 Day, the developer said it's working on the "next chapter of the Mass Effect universe". It's built by a "veteran team", but we don't know who exactly is involved.

"Meanwhile here at BioWare, a veteran team has been hard at work envisioning the next chapter of the Mass Effect universe," BioWare boss Casey Hudson said in a blog post. "We are in early stages on the project and can't say any more just yet, but we're looking forward to sharing our vision for where we'll be going next."

Mass Effect Trilogy Remaster Finally Revealed With Legendary Edition

3 years 5 months ago

Garrus, we are coming for you! After years of fans begging and more leaks than we can keep track of, BioWare has finally confirmed that the Mass Effect Trilogy remaster is real and it's here! Here's our first look at the Mass Effect Legendary Edition.

Whether you're Team Garrus or a fan of the blueberry variety with Liara, all of our favs are coming back with an updated version. The remaster brings the iconic trilogy to current-gen alongside all of the DLC and modernized upgrades. Yeah, that means no more weird wooden teeth from Williams in the first game.

The Mass Effect Trilogy introduced us to Commander Shepard and changed the world of sci-fi RPGs for many. This is my personal favorite franchise of all time, with over 30 playthroughs, all of the collectibles, replicas, comics, books, and pretty much anything else I can get my hand on.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops – Cold War criticised for overly generous PlayStation exclusives

3 years 5 months ago

Console exclusivity, man, it’s a nightmare to keep track of. With Call Of Duty: Black Ops – Cold War‘s release just around the corner, the latest Activision shoot-man game has come under fire for more PlayStation-exclusive gubbins. Going beyond just a time-limited new gamemode, the latest outcry concerns a host of boons that seem to ensure folks playing on PS4 and PS5 will have an edge on Cold War’s cross-platform battlefields.

There's no way to move PS5 games off the SSD

3 years 5 months ago

Continuing our PlayStation 5 review process, Digital Foundry today presents a guided tour of the excellent new user interface, exploring the menu system and new functionality - and it was during the recording of this video that a couple of inconvenient issues came to light. The big one is this: right now, there seems to be no way of copying PS5 games away from the main system storage, presenting problems when the SSD is full. In this scenario, the only way to install new games is to delete old ones, meaning that to play them again you'll need to re-download them - deleting other installed PS5 games in the process. PlayStation 4 games installed to PS5 are not affected - these can be moved off to external USB storage.

In common with the Xbox Series consoles, next generation games for PS5 can only be run from internal storage (or the 1TB expansion card, in the case of the Microsoft consoles) and thus far, Sony has not whitelisted any third-party M.2 NVMe drives for extra solid state drive space. However, the difference here is Xbox consoles allow for all games old and new to be archived off to external storage. You can't run next-gen games from there, but at least you can shuttle the titles to and from internal storage without having to re-download them. This does not appear to be a viable solution for PS5.

Demon's Souls: Watch 12 Minutes Of Gameplay With The Director

3 years 5 months ago

Demon's Souls is one of the most exciting PS5 exclusives releasing this year, with Bluepoint Games fully remaking From Software's 2009 masterpiece to take advantage of the new hardware. In a new 12-minute gameplay walkthrough, creative director Gavin Moore showed off offline gameplay, as well as the HUD that was disabled during previous gameplay demonstrations.

After showing off the robust new character creator, Moore shows off the Nexus area, a hub comparable to the Hunter's Dream from Bloodborne or the Firelink Shrine in Dark Souls 3. From here, you can use the game's five Archstones to travel to the game's various regions--there isn't a sixth one, as the unfinished content from the original game wasn't completed for the remake.

The loading times for traveling to the first Archstone's area--the Gates of Boletaria--are nearly non-existent. After a short cinematic featuring a dragon, the gameplay begins, and it's nothing short of stunning.

From graffiti to giant robots, Umurangi Generation's Macro DLC isn't messing around

3 years 5 months ago

I didn’t think Umurangi Generation could find a way to be more entirely my jam. And yet, with a heaping serving of skates, spraypaint and giant killer robots, today’s Macro DLC has managed just that. But alongside a new set of maps, lenses, and a toolset that closes the gap with Jet Set Radio even further, this week’s drop is also brazenly radical in capturing our current political hellscape on 35mm film.

Review: Xbox Series X

3 years 5 months ago

It’s no secret that Microsoft was fighting an uphill battle with the Xbox One. The initial announcement of the draconian DRM strategy did not go over well, with Sony and the gaming community at large taking every opportunity to dunk on it. But over time, the console landscape shifted dramatically. Microsoft, along with Phil Spencer, completely changed the conversation.

Xbox Games with Gold provided players with permanent copies of 360 games. Microsoft extended its hand to other publishers, opening the floodgates for cross-platform play while Sony opposed the program for another year, only relenting for certain big-ticket games. Xbox Game Pass utterly shifted the landscape of "generations," becoming the first major successful "Netflix for games" concept.

That philosophy extends to the Xbox Series X family.

[Since this is our first of the two new hardware reviews, here's a quick side note. We've made both articles fairly uniform, so you can compare and contrast them together when the PS5 review hits. You can find our Xbox Series X unboxing article here.]

It looks like Marvel's Avengers failed to do the business for Square Enix

3 years 5 months ago

Square Enix has posted its latest financial results, and it doesn't look great for Marvel's Avengers.

The Japanese company announced its financial figures for the six month period to 30th September 2020, and while revenues and profits were up versus the same weak period in 2019 (Square Enix released Final Fantasy 7 remake earlier in 2020), the quarter during which Marvel's Avengers released saw a £36m loss.

The part of Square Enix's business we're concerned with here is called "Digital Entertainment-HD Games".

Review: PlayStation 5

3 years 5 months ago

Sony certainly killed it with the PS4, didn't they? I mean, Microsoft handed them the "W" on a silver platter as soon as that draconian DRM presentation hit.

But something remarkable happened: Microsoft fought back. Instead of throwing in the towel, they made strides in the backward compatibility arena that no publisher had done before. All the while, Sony crafted killer exclusive after exclusive, fighting the good fight with the thing that matters most: games. Sony had to work to sell those 112-million-plus units and take a coveted spot in the "top five all-time best-selling console" list.

This generation, after all of the groundwork laid by Microsoft, we're poised for a fairer fight. But Sony is really coming in swinging yet again with the PS5.

Whatcha been playing this week, Destructoid?

3 years 5 months ago

Maybe it's just me, but it seems that, somehow, the weeks of the horrorscape that is 2020 are getting faster and faster. Events that once seemed set in the future are upon us, impending, or passed entirely. It feels as if the year has flown by and, as we head into November, a new era of video gaming beckons. None of us really know when Real Life will return to normal, (or "The New Normal"), but just continue to be your very best self, look after those around you, and support those that may not be doing as well. Things will improve and a lot of us are handling this unprecedented year better than we give ourselves credit for.

This week was a bit of a disaster for me, game-wise. A couple of blinding migraines put me off excess screen-staring for a couple of days, then my PS4 - a launch model - finally bit the dust while trying to eek out Ubisoft's Watch Dogs: Legion. This required me to purchase another PS4, just a fortnight before the PS5 drops. Beggars belief. As for DedSec's adventures in old London town, keep your eyes peeled for a review very soon. Oh, it was also my birthday, which saw me enter a new decade. I hope it's a good one.

Hope y'all have had a good week, and have been successful in finding hours of great digital entertainment. This is your time to shine, as always, so jump into the comments below and let us know what games have taken your fancy this week. There are no rules, (there are some rules), but spill the beans on the old, the new, the great, the bad, and everything in between. We love hearing what you've all been up to.

Have a safe and pleasant weekend, from all of us at Destructoid.

Destiny 2 Holiday Gift Guide 2020

Why not treat a Destiny 2 fan to some face masks with various logos and symbols from the game? Stylish face masks are more fun than just boring ol’ solid colored ones.

PS5 Lets You Automatically Turn Subtitles On for All Your Games

3 years 5 months ago
The PlayStation 5 comes with a variety of accessibility options, including the option to create custom presets so all your games play similarly when you first boot them up. That means, for example, if you prefer playing with subtitles on, you can make it so that subtitles will be turned on by default for each new PS5 game. Sony revealed the preset options during a tour of its UI and settings earlier this week. Now that we can talk more in-depth about the PS5, we know exactly how presets work and what players can change. To configure your PS5 presets, players can go to Settings, then Saved Data and Game/App Settings then to Game PResets. From there you’ll have the option to change Subtitles and Audio that will let you turn subtitles and preferred audio options on by default for any new game. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=confirmed-playstation-5-games&captions=true"] The other options also include “Difficulty” so you can preset a difficulty between Easiest, Easy, Normal, Hard, or Hardest; “Performance or Resolution” which lets you choose to prioritize FPS or resolution where applicable; and ‘Camera Controls’ which lets you preset whether you want normal or inverted camera controls. For IGN’s full rundown of new PS5 features, check out our PS5 wiki. And for our reviews check out our PS5 review, DualSense Review, and Pulse Headset review.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales Includes A Big Tribute To Black Lives Matter

3 years 5 months ago

Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales returns players to the New York City of its predecessor. But the political climate in the real world has changed significantly since Marvel's Spider-Man came out in 2018, with months of protests against police brutality taking place in cities across the country following the death of George Floyd in May. Insomniac Games' new title takes current events into account in an unambiguous way, paying tribute to the Black Lives Matter movement with a massive in-game mural that unlocks after you complete a line of sidequests.

As Games Radar reports, you'll find the mural upon completion of a series of sidequests in which Spider-Man helps out various people in New York, and specifically in his home neighborhood of Harlem. When you knock out all the quests, you receive the Uptown Pride suit, which is black and yellow--the colors associated with Black Lives Matter. The cutscene awarding you the suit takes place in front of a mural featuring the slogan.
