iiRcade Gold Edition Revealed With Authentic Form Factor, Preorders Live

2 years 1 month ago

Home arcade company iiRcade makes some of the best cabinets around, and today it opened preorders for the new Gold Edition lineup. Alongside the previously announced Dead Cells machine, iiRcade Gold Edition includes the customizable Black Edition (with included Double Dragon decals) as well as Space Invaders and Dragon's Lair models.

Sporting a taller form factor with a curved top, more discrete speaker placement, and the same premium controls and specs as the original iiRcade system, the Gold Edition more closely resembles a real arcade machine now. The marquee also lights up for that authentic arcade look, and it has 128GB of storage space for downloading new titles from the store. Given the tiny file size of most of them, that's enough for literally hundreds of games without having to delete any, and 11 games (12 on the Dragon's Lair and Space Invaders models) are included out of the gate.

Iron Banter: This Week In Destiny 2 - Grappling With Gambit

2 years 1 month ago

Just about every week brings something new to Destiny 2, whether it's story beats, new activities, or interesting new combinations of elements that let players devastate each other in the Crucible. Iron Banter is our weekly look at what's going on in the world of Destiny and a rundown of what's drawing our attention across the solar system.

The launch of The Witch Queen also saw Bungie making a series of adjustments to Gambit, a mode the studio had released way back with the Forsaken expansion. I've always found Gambit to be a really interesting addition to Destiny 2, and one of the things most unique about the game. It's a Destiny take on what might be a horde mode in other games, where you take on waves of enemies, but it's structured to be more strategic. Gambit is a mode I've always really liked--at least, on paper.

I've leaned into Gambit a little more with the recent addition of the new Labs feature, which makes some slight tweaks to the formula, seemingly both to add some variety and to gather player data for Bungie to make greater changes down the line. And I find I'm still torn on it. I like Gambit as an idea, but it still isn't quite as compelling as I wish it was.

You Can Beat The Quarry Without Pressing A Button

Platform: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC
Publisher: 2K Games
Developer: Supermassive Games
Release:
Rating: Mature

The Quarry is an upcoming game from Supermassive Games, and it’s a spiritual successor to 2015’s Until Dawn. Unlike Until Dawn, which puts players in the roles of multiple characters stuck in a winter mountain cabin, The Quarry is riffing on the classic “teenagers without supervision at summer camp” trope.

Eidos Montreal Has 'No Regrets' About Guardians of the Galaxy Sales

2 years 1 month ago

Despite a somewhat rocky start with sales, Guardians of the Galaxy developer Eidos Montreal is confident the game is still a "great ride."

In the wake of the game’s 2021 release, Square Enix initially stated that Guardians of the Galaxy’s sales had underperformed. Thanks to numerous award nominations, discounts, and its inclusion on Xbox’s Game Pass, however, its sales have improved since its release.

In the meantime, it has benefited from positive word-of-mouth, and Eidos Montreal stands by the game's quality overall.

"I have no regrets," Guardians of the Galaxy senior creative director Jean-Francois Dugas told Eurogamer. "We did everything we could but that's the reality of the market... And let's not forget it's a new IP. Even though we say all 'Guardians [of the Galaxy] are known', it's still a new IP [in the video game market]. It could be a lot of people don't even know that the game is out yet, or they're not sure exactly what it is."

Latest Out of the Park Baseball 23 Trailer Is All About New Features

2 years 1 month ago

Earlier today on YouTube, OOTPDevelopments dropped a new trailer and press release looking at the new features coming to Out of the Park Baseball 23. Among these changes are a brand-new tutorial system, updated graphics, and even deeper customization.

First, the new tutorial system is built to help new players get into Out of the Park Baseball 23. There’s no doubt that just being thrown in can be daunting with all of the teams, players, and general options you have. The aim of the tutorial is to explain everything in a way that anyone can understand.

Out of the Park Baseball 23 is going to get a massive overhaul compared to past iterations. That means the 3D animations are all enhanced to present more realistic visuals on the field. It’s still not quite on the same level as something like MLB The Show in terms of visuals, but it’s much improved from past years.

Additionally, there’s a brand-new simulation engine that OOTP Developments promises will improve, “Franchise Mode and Perfect Team experiences with all-new ratings balances for historical players.”

On top of that, players will also be able to upgrade all of the gear for their favorite teams. That means you can make changes to caps, jerseys, and pants. Plus you can even set certain days of the week or special dates for these different uniforms.

For those of you who are all about authenticity, Out of the Park Baseball 23 will feature all of the new 2022 MLB rules, tactics, playoffs, and strategies. What’s more, they improved the calculations for batter vs pitcher, there will be a redesigned catcher framing model, and updated scouting abilities.

Even the overall club management portion of the game is going to be getting some new additions. These changes will make it easier to assess team revenue management, employ new team batting strategies, enjoy new trade options, and further customize lineups in advance.

Warframe's hefty Angels of the Zariman update arrives 27th April

2 years 1 month ago

Digital Extremes has finally set a date for Warframe's Angels of the Zariman expansion, with the free-to-play sci-fi shooter's first big update of 2022 coming to all platforms on 27th April.

Angels of the Zariman focuses its multitude of new additions around the lore-critical Zariman Ten Zero, an Orokin ship that vanished during a Void-Jump accident. Front and centre of the update is a new instalment in Warframe's single-player, story driven Cinematic Quest saga, which this time sets the scene by taking Tenno aboard the Zariman Ten Zero.

Then, once the mission is complete, players will gain access to Chrysalith, a new social hub onboard the Zariman, which introduces a range of new NPC, side missions, and objectives.

Xbox All Access Promoted by Brooklyn Nine-Nine Star Andre Braugher in New Trailer

2 years 1 month ago

Today Microsoft released a new ad promoting its all-included service Xbox All Access.

The trailer stars actor Andre Braugher, known among others for his role as the deadpan Captain Raymond Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

The video certainly plays with the character, as the setting certainly appears to mirror Holt’s house, and the corgi will prove familiar to fans of the series as well, as Holt notoriously owns his own super-cute canine named Cheddar.

The message is that Xbox All Access has it all figured out, which is also pretty much a characteristic of Braugher’s fictional alter ego.

You can watch it below.

Xbox All Access offers an Xbox Series X or S plus Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for $34.99 per month or $24.99 per month depending on which console you want.

It’s worth mentioning that the service is available only in select countries, and that the lineup offered and conditions vary slightly depending on where you apply.

Sonic 2 Movie Stars And Director Talk Bringing The Blue Blur Back To the Silver Screen

2 years 1 month ago

The first Sonic the Hedgehog film was an unlikely success story. Following a disastrous debut trailer, in which the iconic blue hedgehog looked far removed from his appearance in every other form of media, the studio went back to the drawing board. Instead of discouraging the filmmakers, the backlash motivated director Jeff Fowler and the rest of the team to pay more attention to the enthusiastic fan base.

“They were absolutely right to request us to work harder and to make adjustments,” Fowler says. “And then to come out the other side and for everyone to be able to high five and celebrate, it felt like we ended in a place where they were happy, and the film was a film that they could embrace. Now, moving forward, it just feels like we have this really wonderful relationship with the fans.”

The result was a character design that looked much more like the Sonic fans are familiar with, and the box office numbers reflected an appreciative audience, with the first film raking in more than $300 million worldwide. The authenticity Fowler and his team delivered in response to the fans paid off.

Gaming Retrospective Project A Handheld History Meets Funding Goal in Just 24 Hours

2 years 1 month ago

From the partnership of Retro Dodo and indie publisher Lost in Cult, crowdfunded gaming retrospective book A Handheld History has reached its goal and raised £21,000 (roughly $27375) in only 24 hours. While the title of the book might be a bit of a misnomer, as the site to pre-order it states A Handheld History is “less of a historical account and more of a poignant, introspective adventure across decades of gaming memories…”

A Handheld History is inspired by the forty-year portable gaming empire that spawned from those LCD screens. Brought to you in partnership with Retro Dodo—the internet’s leading retro gaming site—A Handheld History is an explorative jaunt through the systems and games that defined the legacy of portable systems…This book will reconnect you to that long car trip full of Tetriminos, Mewtwos, and discarded AA batteries before speeding ahead to our contemporary days of OLED screens and blockbusters in your backpack.

Handheld gaming has been a thing since the late 1970’s. It’s as much a fixture of gaming as consoles are. For those among us who are old enough to have experienced the Gameboy eras, be it the original, Color, or Advance, those memories are part of us and A Handheld History apparently wants to help you connect back to that.

Retro Dodo also released a video of their founder Brandon Saltalamacchia speaking about the book that you can watch here and below:

Genshin Impact’s Kokomi Used To Suck, But Now She's Fun As Hell

2 years 1 month ago

I didn’t try to recruit Kokomi, the water-element healer, during her initial, limited release. The Quarry Gameplay Footage Is Very Scary, New Screenshots Released Too

2 years 1 month ago

2K Games has released a new gameplay trailer for The Quarry, the next horror game from the developers of Until Dawn. In this 30-minute gameplay clip from the game's prologue, we see teenage camp counselors Laura (Siobhan Williams) and boyfriend Max (Skyler Gisondo) visiting the camp one night before they were scheduled to appear. What a great idea... certainly nothing will go wrong.

Obviously, things go very poorly, and you'll want to watch the full gameplay video below to see how it plays out. Or if you're planning to go into The Quarry with fresh eyes, skip this video entirely.

The Quarry tells a story of the final day of summer camp when a group of teenage counselors at the Hackett's Quarry camp are hosting a party. This will end up becoming a fateful, blood-soaked evening filled with horror. Like Until Dawn, players will make choices to determine what happens to each of the nine camp counselors. Any character can die.

The Quarry also features online play where those invited to a session can watch the action and cast their votes on certain decisions. New screenshots from The Quarry have been released as well; take a look in the gallery below.

Supermassive's summer camp horror The Quarry has a non-interactive Movie Mode

2 years 1 month ago

Tired of those infernal video games, always insisting on being so darned interactive? Well, developer Supermassive Games (Until Dawn, The Dark Pictures Anthology) has you covered in its next horror title The Quarry, which comes with its very own Movie Mode.

Movie Mode, just as it sounds, lets players (or rather viewers, in this instance) watch the entirety of The Quarry's summer-camp-flavoured horror in linear, non-interactive fashion - meaning you can simply plop your bot on the sofa, grab your popcorn with two controller-free hands, and soak up its scares with only minimal exertions from yourself.

As detailed in a new IGN preview (thanks PC Gamer), The Quarry's Movie Mode will come in three different flavours: Everybody Lives, Everybody Dies, and Director's Chair. The first two are pretty self-explanatory, determining whether The Quarry's cast members - including the likes of Lance Henriksen, Grace Zabriskie, David Arquette, Ted Raimi, Justice Smith, and Skyler Gisondo - manage to survive their experience at Hackett's Quarry summer camp to live another day.

Elden Ring: How To Beat Malenia Easily Using The Glintstone Craftsman's Cookbook

2 years 1 month ago

Anyone who has encountered Malenia in Elden Ring knows that she is easily one of the toughest bosses in the game. She is incredibly fast, has two stages, and regenerates health whenever she hits you. One of her most dangerous attacks is the Waterfoul Dance, where after floating in the air for a brief moment, she flies into you rapidly swinging her sword. If this attack doesn't kill you, it will regenerate a ton of Malenia's health bar. However, someone has discovered a hard counter to the Waterfoul Dance that anyone can use.

Use the Freezing Pot to stop the Waterfoul Dance

Reddit user toxicBird7 shared a video of the strategy, which shows Malenia charging up the Waterfoul Dance when they throw the Freezing Pot at her. The Freezing Pot cancels her attack, which will increase most people's chances of beating her significantly. Since you can carry up to 10 Freezing Pots--assuming you have the materials--you can stop Melania from using the attack during the entire fight. Since this strategy involves using a throwable item, it doesn't matter what kind of build you have. Anyone can use the Freezing Pot, but you might need to go out of your way to gather the materials to make them.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Was So Huge, Larian Chose to Triple in Size Rather Than Shrink the Game

2 years 1 month ago

Larian Studios creative director Swen Vincke loves collaborative storytelling, especially when there’s room for it to get as silly and original as possible.

Chatting with me after his GDC talk, “The Many Challenges of Making 'Baldur's Gate 3'”, Vincke and I start out by sharing our mutual desires to play video games alongside our partners, whether in-person or long distance. I tell him that Original Sin 2’s online play allowed my partner and I to still have date nights even while living half a country apart. He tells me his own relationship was why the feature exists in the first place.

“There's split screen in [Divinity: Original Sin 1] already,” he says. “The only thing was I never played it anymore because when I finish a game, I'm so sick and tired of looking at it. And so [my partner] said, ‘You don't want to play it with me?’ So she played, and she still really enjoyed it, but we never played it in split screen. But the intention was, this is what I would like to be able to play with someone, and so that's how that came to be.”

Vincke came from a small coastal city in Belgium, where he says the last thing people were doing was playing Dungeons & Dragons, a game Vincke was fascinated by. Without easy access to the manuals, he began perusing the tabletop manuals available at the library and a handful of computer games like the Ultima series based off D&D. Through them, Vincke realized he wanted to make his own games just like that.

Game Pass Is Helping Guardians Of The Galaxy After Slow Start, Dev Says

2 years 1 month ago

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy from developer Eidos-Montreal did not sell as well as publisher Square Enix might have wanted, but the game is apparently seeing some growth lately thanks to its arrival on Xbox Game Pass.

Senior creative director Jean-Francois Dugas told Eurogamer that Guardians of the Galaxy isn't perfect. "It can always be better," Dugas said. "But is it a great ride? And is it something this year or last year that you played that is unlike everything else? And is it worth spending your time on? I honestly think it is, from a game standpoint."

Dugas went on to say that the team did "everything" possible to make Guardians of the Galaxy a success in the market, but it might not have been enough. Dugas pointed out that one issue could simply be awareness. "Even though we say all 'Guardians [of the Galaxy] are known', it's still a new IP [in the video game market]. It could be a lot of people don't even know that the game is out yet, or they're not sure exactly what it is," Dugas said.

Senior narrative director Mary DeMarle mentioned that Game Pass specifically is helping people discover the game who might not otherwise have. "What I love right now is that people, especially with Games Pass, are playing it and they're sharing the experience," DeMarle said. "We make games to touch people, we make games to hit an audience. And it's great that it's finding its audience, and it's great that it keeps going forward."

Elden Ring Streamer Luality Beats Malenia in 4 Hours Using a Dance Pad

2 years 1 month ago

Despite being known for its difficulty, players have always managed to beat souls games in the most unconventional ways, using everything from guitars to morse code to beat games like Dark Souls and Bloodbourne. After being out for a little over a month now, it looks like it’s Elden Ring’s turn.

Just yesterday on Twitch, streamer Luality managed to defeat Malenia, one of the hardest bosses in Elden Ring, using just a dance pad. In total, it took her about four hours just to finish this fight alone. You can check out the ending highlight of this impressive accomplishment below.

As you can see from the video above, Luality used the different sections of the dance pad and assigned important actions like attacking, dodging, and item usage accordingly. Alongside using this unique controller, it is also worth noting that the streamer didn’t even use the Ashen Summon, further proving how skilled she is at the game.
