Shin Megami Tensei V Surpasses 1 Million Copies Sold, Atlus Announces with New Artwork

Shin Megami Tensei V was first unveiled alongside the Nintendo Switch, and while the wait for its release has been unbearably long and arduous, it was definitely worth it. The game held true to its roots, while also providing enough quality-of-life improvements to make it more accessible to newcomers.

Since its launch last year, the game has officially sold over one million copies worldwide, as Atlus has just announced on Twitter.

To celebrate, character designer Masayuki Doi has also posted new artwork of the protagonist thanking players for their support. Shin Megami Tensei V was lauded not just for its fun and challenging gameplay, but also for its exceptional art direction, so more artwork is always welcome.

Shin Megami Tensei V is now available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.

Blizzard President Responds To Rumors Of Interest In Crypto Games: "No One Is Doing NFTs"

As the controversy over non-fungible tokens (NFTs) continues to rage, Blizzard’s President Mike Ybarra has denied the company is interested in pursuing blockchain technology for its games.

Ybarra was responding to a story from Video Games Chronicle reporting that a YouGov survey asked players about crypto and NFT products in Activision Blizzard games. This sparked speculation that Activision Blizzard itself was polling the players about the controversial technology.

Ybarra tweeted in response, “No one is doing NFTs.”

NFTs are unique digital items that are stored on a digital ledger called a blockchain. While Ybarra’s answer will probably give many players a sigh of relief, other game companies still believe NFTs are the future of gaming.

Square Enix President Yosuke Matsuda ardently believes that adding blockchain technology to video games is worthwhile. He mentioned wanting to “provide incentives” to players who want to create interesting content that will “continue to evolve” using blockchain. Theoretically, this would allow content creators to own parts of the content created for the game.

The Super Mario Bros. Anime From 1986 Has Been Restored In 4K

Super Mario Bros. anime The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach is available to stream or download right now in 4k for the very first time.

A new restoration of the classic 1986 Super Mario Bros. anime is available now on YouTube, with a download available at the Internet Archive.

“This comes from a 16mm reduction print likely used for small, local screenings back in the day when it was released,” says the video description. “It's likely one of the, if not THE only surviving print in the world, and fellow fan Carnivol was able to get his hands on it back in 2016.”

Although the film has been available to watch online for years, this is the best version yet. This new restoration is clean, color corrected, and newly subtitled for the best possible experience.

“We were able to clean it up super nicely (although some scratches were unable to be completely removed),” the team explained. They spent months removing dirt, dust, and scratches. “Thousands of individual pieces of debris were manually removed for this restoration.”

Additionally, the audio has been recaptured using the VHS as a source.

“The VHS was originally released with 2-channel Dolby Surround, which is preserved in the audio capture here,” says Femboy Films. “This reflects most accurately how the film would have sounded in cinemas, as it was released with 4-channel Dolby Stereo there.”

There’s even a brand-new scan of the film’s original art books.

Final Fantasy XIV Housing Lottery Crisis Gets Another Update & Light at the End of the Tunnel

It appears that there is some light at the end of the tunnel for Final Fantasy XIV players who have found their attempts to acquire a new home frustrated by a bug within the lottery system implemented with the latest update.

The issue caused the lottery to fail to assign many plots of land to the proper winners, simply returning a “0” value, causing considerable frustration among the community.

Today Square Enix posted another update signed by producer and director Naoki Yoshida, signalling the steps Square Enix is going to take to address the situation.

Those are as follows:

  • Restoring the lottery results data
  • Fixing the identified issues
  • Verifying the fixes

We learn that all lotteries have actually been conducted successfully, but those who returned the dreaded “0” were affected by a failure to communicate the winner to the housing server.

Those players who managed to purchase their house need not worry, as nothing changes for them.

Those affected by the “0” issue will have to wait for a fix to be implemented. When that happens, it’ll be possible to confirm the lottery winners. Those who registered for these lotteries won’t need to register a second time. Square Enix asked for some patience as data is recovered.

If you have already recovered your downpayment, you don’t need to worry either, as Square Enix is considering the means to recollect payment from the winners that did so. More details will be announced at a later time.

SEGA Announces a Streets of Rage Movie Is in Development

Today, SEGA revealed that they are bringing another of their hit video game franchises back to the silver screen, as the beat ’em up series Streets of Rage is getting a brand new movie. This news comes by way of Deadline, which reports that Sonic the Hedgehog producer dj2 Entertainment and Escape Artists (Equalizer) will produce the film adaptation.

Despite some criticism regarding the franchise when it was first announced, the Sonic the Hedgehog movie franchise has been a resounding success for dj2 and SEGA, with the second film recently pulling in $72 million at the box office during its opening weekend alone. The success of Sonic is likely what prompted SEGA to give this next project the greenlit.

The untitled Streets of Rage movie is also set to be written by Derek Kolstad, who also wrote John Wick and Nobody. While there aren’t too many details about the film at this time, there’s plenty of source material to go off of, as the franchise has published multiple games revolving around the group of former police officers that battle an organized crime syndicate since the first title came out in 1991.

The latest title in the franchise, Streets of Rage 4, was released in April of 2020 and has sold more than 2.5 million copies worldwide.

It’ll be interesting to see if the recent buzz surrounding video game movies and the success of the most recent game can correlate in to another successful movie franchise for SEGA. For now, we’ll just have to wait to see.

Xbox Veteran Remembers Trying To Buy Blizzard Long Before the Big Activision-Blizzard Deal

Former Xbox vice president Ed Fries says that he tried to buy Blizzard multiple times back during his tenure at Microsoft before he left in 2004.

In a podcast with XboxEra, Fries implied that the acquistion would have made sense given Microsoft's history with the PC platform, saying, "I was a huge Blizzard fan. If you think about the roots of our PC gaming business, it was real-time strategy...Warcraft, of course, was their biggest product."

Back in 1994, learning software company Davidson and Associates acquired Blizzard (which was named Chaos Studios back then). In 1996, Davidson and Associates was acquired by Cendant Software, which Fries recalls losing out on, saying, "I just got outbid by a time-share camping business?"

Elden Ring Player Creates Kratos With This Amazing God of War Build

Elden Ring has been out for almost two months now, giving fans plenty of time to explore its massive map and fight all of the terrifying creatures it has to offer. But while fighting and exploring is plenty of fun, how you do and who you do it as adds an entire new layer, especially if you manage to create a build that resembles Kratos from God of War.

Yes, someone finally created the Ghost of Sparta thanks to a combination of character customization and equipping the right items. As you can see in the post below to the Elden Ring subreddit, user Ariiverderci managed to create Kratos in Elden Ring and boy does it ever look awesome.

According to the player, all it took was a tutorial to get the body and face right and then they equipped dual-wielding whips – apparently any whips work fine, but they used Hoslow Whip and Urumi for the video. Once equipped, they then just doused the left and then right weapon in fire grease to recreate the Blades of Athena.

So what do you think of this build? Are you going to try and play as Kratos with the Blades of Athena as well? Be sure to let us know in the comment section below.

Jason Momoa Reportedly In Talks To Star In Minecraft Movie

Warner Bros.' troubled Minecraft movie is reportedly negotiating with Aquaman star Jason Momoa to voice the main protagonist.

According to The Ankler, Warner Bros.' rights to Minecraft expire in January 2023, meaning the studio must start production on the movie before then.

In addition to Momoa, the film has also apparently tapped Jared Hess to direct. Hess is best known for directing Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre.

The report also states Warner Bros. is looking to turn the Minecraft movie into a franchise if the first movie can get off the ground. Recently, the Sonic the Hedgehog movie franchise has successfully proven a video game movie series can work, with two hits at the box office, a third on the way, and a spinoff streaming series in development. It seems Warner Bros. is hoping Minecraft can be next in line to continue that trend.

The Minecraft movie's troubled development dates back nearly a decade when Night at the Museum director Shawn Levy left Warner Bros.' Minecraft project over creative differences in 2014. Levy was replaced by It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-creator Rob McElhenney, but McElhenney also dropped out.

Save on Nintendo Switch OLED With These Bundle Deals

Here in the US, we haven't seen any price drop in the Nintendo Switch, which is kind of a drag. To be fair, though... Nintendo doesn't really need to drop the price, because Nintendo Switch still sells extremely well in spite of being 5 years old. However, much like PS5 and Xbox Series X, the best way to get a Nintendo Switch OLED Model is with a bundled deal. Thankfully, Dell is offering two such deals right now.

Nintendo Switch OLED Deals

These deals don't save you much, just $20, but that's a year's worth of vanilla Nintendo Switch Online service. Plus it's a nice way to get a whole stack of Switch stuff in one fell swoop.

You can choose between either Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury or Kirby and the Forgotten Land and honestly that's a really tough choice. I'm leaning toward recommending Kirby over 3D World, only because it's a newer game. Either way you go, you're getting a delightful Nintendo experience.

Having an extra set of Joy-con is also nice, since they've had some hiccups with availability (just like everything else electronic).

This is about as close as we've gotten to a proper Nintendo Switch deal, so even though it's not great, a deal's a deal.

Ultraman Anime Final Season Announced by Netflix; Coming Next year

Netflix has just confirmed that the CGI anime inspired by the popular tokusatsu franchise Ultraman is getting a third and final season.

The new season, which will follow the second that has just debuted on the popular streaming platform, will launch in 2023.

The announcement came with a brief teaser trailer, which you can watch below.

The trailer’s description also provides hints to what we can expect, albeit pretty vague.

“The world of Ultraman as seen through the lens of directors Kenji Kamiyama and Shinji Aramaki heads into the final chapter at last!

Will the six warriors — Ultraman, Seven, Ace, Zoffy, Jack and Taro — finally put an end to the battle with the aliens?

The final season of the Netflix Series “ULTRAMAN” streams worldwide in 2023, only on Netflix!”

If you’re unfamiliar with Ultraman, it debuted in 2019, translating into animation a manga written by Eiichi Shimizu and drawn by Tomohiro Shimoguchi, which was serialized on Monthly Hero’s starting in 2011.

The manga itself is inspired by the ultra-famous Ultraman tokusatsu franchise, that has been a staple of Japanese television since 1966.

Into the Multiverse of the Metaverse

Depending on who you ask, the metaverse could be any number of things. For some, it’s highly centralized around gaming, existing as an MMO-like experience. For others, it’s a virtual workspace or a digital version of the world we already live in. The most commonly accepted version of the metaverse, though, is something that resembles Ready Player One where all of your favorite characters, friends, and family members interact with each other in a 3D virtual world. Or at least, that’s the most idealized vision of what the metaverse could be.

Of course, that’s not a reality at the moment and the closest something’s come might be Epic’s juggernaut free-to-play battle royale game, Fortnite. But long-running MMOs like CCP Games’ EVE Online might be just as close to what the metaverse may become: a virtual world where players become entirely different people living completely different lives. They might be the commander of a space fleet igniting a war to colonize planets prime for resources, or they might be a simple trader on a peaceful planet.

For CCP CEO Hilmar Pétursson, conversations about the metaverse are nothing new. In conversation, you can sense the blasé outlook he has on the idea – not because he isn’t interested in it, but because they are the same ideas he’s heard shuffled in gaming circles since the 1992 release of Snow Crash, a foundational sci-fi novel that set a precedent (not necessarily the precedent) for what a metaverse could be, even going as far as to coin the word “metaverse.”

Postal 4: No Regerts Review

Maybe I’m supposed to hate Postal 4: No Regerts. Maybe that’s sort of the point. Developer Running With Scissors describes it as a sequel to “the worst game ever,” Postal 2, renowned for its vulgarity and rough edges. If the goal was to make one that’s even worse then that’s certainly been achieved, but that gag doesn’t mean it’s ever fun to actually play. Even for the novelty of a guilty pleasure, like watching a really bad movie for a laugh, Postal 4 only ever disappoints – if I could somehow forgive the corny writing, bad graphics, awful gunplay, and constant bugs, it would still be incredibly difficult to enjoy any game that hard crashes every hour or so. Whether you’re in on the joke or not, there’s nothing on offer here except pain.

Activision States Microsoft and Bobby Kotick Have Not Discussed 'Post-Closing Employment Arrangements'

Activision Blizzard has stated that its CEO Bobby Kotick and Microsoft have not yet discussed what his employment status will be following Microsoft's acquisition of the company.

As spotted by Axios' Stephen Totilo, Activision added a line to its United States Securities and Exchange Commission filing about the planned sale to Microsoft that made clear these talks have not happened yet.

"No discussions or negotiations regarding post-closing employment arrangements with Microsoft occurred between Microsoft and Mr. Kotick prior to the approval and execution of the merger agreement and the transactions contemplated thereby, or have occurred subsequent to such approval and execution, through the date hereof," the filing reads.

A big question following the announcement of Microsoft's intent to purchase Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion was whether Kotick would be coming along with the deal or not. Reports have come out saying that he is set to leave after the deal closes, but nothing has been confirmed one way or another.

Playdate review: a handheld indie curio that goes hand in hand with the spirit of PC

On paper, Panic's Playdate doesn't have a lot to do with PC. It's a standalone handheld console that fits into the palm of your hand (yes, even palms as small as mine), and is controlled via a d-pad, two face buttons and its unique, standout feature, the crank. But inside this dinky yellow wafer, the spirit of PC gaming has never been stronger. It's there in its eclectic first season of indie games, a series of 24 titles that not only delight in the minutiae of its hardware but are delivered weekly for free in batches of two direct to your console over Wi-Fi. It's there in the openness of the Playdate ecosystem, too, where you can make your own Playdate games in its browser-based Pulp creation tool, download the source code, share it with friends (or sell it) and sideload it onto your Playdate all in a matter of minutes. Heck, Panic have even added the ability to stream from it, capture video and screenshots from it, and hook it up to an external monitor, keyboard or controller via its Playdate Mirror app.

It's a surprisingly versatile bit of kit, the Playdate, and one I feel will enchant and enthral anyone who has a deep and inherent love of all things games. Sure, there's every possibility it may end up as another Ouya-style disaster show, but if you've ever longed for something like Lexaloffle's Pico-8 platform to be more than just a 'fantasy console', then the Playdate is exactly what you've been waiting for.

The Playdate Hardware Review

In an era of 4K visuals, 3D spatial audio, and sprawling open-world designs, there's something oddly refreshing about a new handheld device trying to emulate the earliest Game Boy and Game & Watch experiences. Playdate is a retro-inspired indie handheld built entirely to deliver novel experiences in a pocket-friendly format. From its bright and friendly appearance to its often whimsical games, it's clear the Playdate's name was chosen with purpose. Like a meet-up between childhood friends, this is an experience meant to recall youth and simplicity. It aims to delight those who pick it up through an array of small, entertaining activities.

The Playdate makes an excellent first impression. The charming yellow handheld may be tiny, but it feels solid in hand. The buttons feel clicky and responsive, and the side crank (the system's most significant innovation) is satisfying to twist round and round. The included speakers are crisp, clear, and capable of robust volume for their size. Or you can plug your preferred headset into the included jack. The small reflective black and white screen nails the nostalgic vibe it's going for, instantly calling to mind those first successful handheld games that older players may remember from youth.

Playdate review - a fascinating puzzle in itself

Handheld consoles are the best part of games, I reckon. I love them more than any other aspect of this brilliant and difficult medium. Handhelds take games and set them free. They task you with finding new ways to fit them into your life, your days, your tangled journey through the world. The Switch is Mario on the sofa or sat up in bed, sure, but it's also Mario under a tree in the park, in a window seat on the bus or a train as forests strobe past. It's Mario queueing for an ice cream or waiting for an MRI. It's Mario slung in your backpack: where next?

Freedom to roam! And there's a peculiar freedom of form too. Handhelds are allowed to be odd, because they're objects - clue in the name here I guess - to be held in the hands, and the hands are curious things themselves. Just look at them. Maybe this is why handhelds are where normally sober hardware designers deploy rear touchscreens, or two screens and a hinge and stylus, where a cartridge might come with its own little rumble pack, or a light sensor for weaponising the sun as you fight digital vampires. The Playdate, which I've spent the last fortnight with, features a crank! It features a crank.

And yet. Long before Playdate and its crank arrived, some part of me already understood that every handheld is, before anything else, a puzzle to be solved. A lovely, playful, speculative puzzle. What is this funny new thing particularly good at? What makes it singular? Where does it really come alive? What, ultimately, is its intention? All this. Yet what I didn't understand until Playdate is that solving this puzzle can take weeks - can be, in fact, something of a game in itself.

Latest Battlefield 2042 Update Adds Voice Chat and Hundreds of Fixes

Electronic Arts and DICE’s online first-person shooter Battlefield 2042 will receive an update later this week that adds in-game voice chat alongside hundreds of fixes and changes across the game.

The update 4.0 will finally allow players to chat with each other in the game with the addition of VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). Voice chat will be limited to two options, a pre-made party or the in-match squad, and players can switch between the two while in a game.

Weapon attachments have also been overhauled with the patch, and the studio said that some attachments were too similar to others in their effects. Some of the attachments received better stats, while others were changed with slightly different effects to prevent overlapping.

The other biggest change in the update is its Ribbon and XP system. Ribbons have been made easier to unlock across all modes, and some specific Ribbons now give increased progress. Support actions such as healing and resupplying also give more XP, while XP earned from capturing and defending objectives have been decreased.

The update will be coming to all platforms on Tuesday, April 19. The patch notes also list hundreds of other changes and improvements ranging from matchmaking to showing a scoreboard after a round ends.

Battlefield 2042 is now available for PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One.

Square Enix Provides Update About Final Fantasy XIV Housing Lottery Crisis

The opening of the Empyreum housing wards in Ishgard and the new lottery system introduced with the latest update of Final Fantasy XIV caused an unforeseen problem that has brought a certain level of friction among the community.

Basically, some of the plots that were supposed to be assigned a few days ago were not, as the lottery system failed to pick a winner and simply displayed a “0” as the new tenant.

Today Square Enix published a new post signed directly by producer and director Naoki Yoshida providing an update on the situation.

First of all, Yoshida-san clarified that the lottery system is entirely random. The previous mention of a “pattern” was simply incorrect wording on his side.

The development team is working hard to identify the root cause, but as of now, they have not yet. This will require additional time.

The issue is three-fold as follows:

  • Cases where the lottery was properly conducted internally and a winner exists, but the results display the winning number as 0.
  • Cases where there was a single entry in the lottery, but the results display that there was no entrant or winner.
  • Cases where there is no winner despite entries being made by multiple friends or free company members.

That being said, Yoshida-san offers a ray of hope, explaining that data on the lotteries that failed exists, and the developers will use it to ensure that players are not negatively affected even if they withdrew their downpayment.
