There are some things in this world that just take you completely by surprise. Drop bears, for example. VRChat bans all mods, leaving disabled players and community feeling abandoned

1 year 9 months ago

Successful Steam social platform VRChat is in a state of disarray following a disruptive update that banned all mods, leaving the game unplayable for many who rely on modded accessibility features.

The mod ban accompanies the integration of Easy Anti-Cheat in an attempt to combat "malicious modded clients".

The latest debacle began earlier this week, when VRChat announced the ban and the inclusion of Easy Anti-Cheat, as well as an open beta beginning immediately to test the update. On Discord, VRChat staff member Tupper revealed they expected the update to be rolled out to all players within 24 hours.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Is a 'Culmination' of the Trilogy - But Not the End of the Series

1 year 9 months ago

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 on Nintendo Switch will act as a "culmination" of the trilogy, but won't be a conclusion for the series overall according to its executive director.

In an interview with Nintendo itself, Tetsuya Takahashi said the first three mainline Xenoblade Chronicles games (not including the more futuristic Chronicles X) share similar themes and gameplay ideas that connect them as a trilogy.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 therefore rounds out the trilogy thematically – but Takahashi made clear it's not the end of the series as a whole. "This is like a summary for moving on to the next step in the future," he said.

"Although some elements and designs from one and two will appear in this third entry here and there, there is no need to have played the first and second games to understand the story or how to play," Takahashi explained. "However, since this is a series of works, the underlying theme is consistent, and in each case, the story unfolds based on 'the relationship between foreign things'.

"I used the word 'culmination' earlier, but this title brings together all the themes that have been developed over the past 15 years since 2007, when development of the first title in the Xenoblade Chronicles series began, as well as the gameplay systems that have been developed throughout the series."

10 Unexpected MCU Characters We Want on the Marvel’s Thunderbolts Squad

1 year 9 months ago

Marvel’s Thunderbolts was officially confirmed to be coming this past weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, formally putting the rumors and theories to bed about whether or not Marvel Studios would be doing this movie.

This team may have been recently confirmed to be coming, but that doesn’t mean that the team hasn’t already been set up, with projects like Black Widow, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Hawkeye setting the team up. Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ character, Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, looks to be the one that will be putting the team together for the upcoming movie.

The biggest and most likely candidates as members of this team are Kate Bishop (Hawkeye), Baron Zemo, Winter Soldier, Yelena Belova, U.S. Agent, Taskmaster, Ghost, and Abomination. If you go on social media, these are the characters you will almost always see mentioned as going to be part of the lineup. However, going over these likely members is not what we are trying to do here; instead, we will go over the more unlikely members who still have a possibility of joining the lineup.

No lineup has been confirmed, but these are the 10 unexpected MCU characters that we believe the Contessa could also be scouting out for her Thunderbolts team.

Will There Be a Given Season 2? Answered

1 year 9 months ago

The anime adaptation of Given, which was originally a manga series, received a hugely positive critical reception after having aired in 2019, and so it’s little surprise that many are wondering whether there will be a Given Season 2. Here, we’ll be providing a breakdown of everything we know so far.

Given – Will There Be a Second Season?

Unfortunately, despite overwhelming demand, Given has not yet been renewed for a second season. That doesn’t mean there won’t be a season 2, just that nothing has officially been confirmed by either animation studio Lerche or Crunchyroll.

As for why that is, it’s important to keep in mind the show is a manga adaptation that is directly based on that source material, as were the subsequent movie and live-action drama. The first series was adapted up to chapter 15 of the manga, and the movie up to chapter 28, which corresponds to the end of volume 5. So far, there are 7 volumes of Given manga, meaning that there’s probably quite enough material for a second season anime adaptation.

The manga continues to be produced, but we would imagine that at least another two or three volumes need to be released before a second season can be adapted. If we were to hazard a guess, it seems as though 2023 would be the earliest we would see Season 2 of Given.

Of course, we’ll keep you posted as soon as we hear more. Until then, that’s everything there is to know about whether there will be a Given Season 2. You can check out Twinfinite’s wrap-up of the top 20 best anime while you wait.

Roblox's Famous 'Oof' Sound Has Been Removed from the Game

1 year 9 months ago

The Roblox "oof" sound, which became famous not just with players but around the internet as a meme, has been removed from the game entirely due to a licensing issue.

The simple soundbite, a second-long "oof" sound that plays when a player dies or resets their character, has proven surprisingly awkward due to copyright claims in the last few years. It would appear these complications are now officially too much Roblox's development team, however, which has now announced the "oof" sound is no longer in the game.

It's been replaced with a similar default sound but, as announced on the Roblox Twitter (below), a whole range of new sounds, both old and new, will be released into the Avatar Shop in the future to make the transition away from the classic "oof" more palatable.

Issues first arose in 2020 when video game composer Tommy Tallarico recognised the now iconic sound as his own creation, originally from a game called Messiah. The "oof" was removed from the game as a result until Tallarico and Roblox reached an agreement to reintroduce it, but at a roughly $1 cost for creators.

Will The Bear Have a Second Season? Answered

1 year 9 months ago

Want to know if The Bear is going to have a second season? Well, you aren’t alone, as this series has been a massive success for the streaming service, and fans can’t seem to get enough of the dark comedy, which is potentially the most accurate depiction of restaurant life ever put to screen.

The first season has achieved critical acclaim, and the series is slowly but surely growing in popularity. The Bear tells a complete and self-contained story in its first season, but fans can’t help but wonder what comes next for Carmy and the restaurant. Here’s everything we know about whether The Bear will have a second season.

Will The Bear Have A Second Season?

The Bear will indeed have a second season. FX clearly recognize that they have a massive hit on their hands with this one and renewed the bear for a second season only a month after the series first hit the steaming service.

FX Entertainment President Eric Schrier announced, via Variety, that The Bear would be renewed for a second season in a statement praising the series, saying:

The Bear has exceeded our wildest creative, critical and commercial expectations. We deeply appreciate the brilliant work led by creator and co-showrunner Christopher Storer and co-showrunner Joanna Calo. Jeremy Allen White’s lead performance is spectacular, as are those of his co-stars Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Ayo Edebiri, Abby Elliott, Lionel Boyce and Liza Colón-Zayas. We can’t wait to get to work on Season Two.

Grand Theft Auto 6 at least two years' off, report suggests, highlighting positive changes within Rockstar

Rockstar's long-awaited Grand Theft Auto 6 is still at least two years away but being made under improved conditions, an extensive new Bloomberg report has detailed.

The report centres on changes within Rockstar since the company's public reckoning with crunch in 2018, when founder Dan Houser said his team had worked "100-hour weeks" to finish Red Dead Redemption 2, and after various reports of the company's frat-house-style operation.

Subsequent changes to working styles and benefits are part of an attempt to "reinvent" the company as a more progressive workplace, the report states, which also extends to the content featured in its games.

GTA 6 Will Reportedly Feature a First Female Playable Character, and Add New Cities Over Time

1 year 9 months ago

Grand Theft Auto 6 will reportedly feature a female playable character in its campaign for the first time. Rockstar apparently plans to launch the game with a single city, but add more locations over time through updates.

As part of a report on Rockstar by Bloomberg, sources close to the studio discussed the new female character, who will be Latina. The character will reportedly be part of a pair of bank robbers in a story influenced by real-life criminals Bonnie & Clyde.

Female protagonists have previously only been available as custom characters in GTA Online, never in the game's single player campaigns. Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser (who has since left the company) previously indicated the company was thinking about a female lead as far back as 2013. [Update: The first Grand Theft Auto game featured female playable characters - this would mark the first in the 3D GTA series as we know it today]

The report also indicates that the launch version of GTA 6 will begin with fictionalized Miami and surrounding areas (presumably a return for Vice City), but will be updated with "new missions and cities on a regular basis". That launch version apparently already includes more interior locations than any GTA game previously.

These badges are already used to denote titles available via Xbox Game Pass, or that have Xbox Series X/S-specific features.

New badges are being tested for other game conditions, so you can see at a glance what you have available to play. For example, a new logo will appear over games that are disc installs where that disc isn't currently inserted - perhaps it's around a friend's? Or down the back of the sofa?

After a launching into open beta yesterday, the new fighting game from Warner Bros. has seen some staggering numbers – reaching a peak of 144,456 concurrent players yesterday on Steam alone. This puts the game ahead of the likes of Warframe, Rust, and even Destiny 2.

The free-to-play multiversal crossover game, starring the likes of Batman, Bugs Bunny, and Shaggy, has already proven to be an extremely popular alternative to Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. And even without console figures, the game’s Beta launch is doing ridiculous numbers.

5 Popular Anime Tropes That Aren’t Actually Annoying

1 year 9 months ago

Just like any other entertainment medium, anime is beyond guilty of being rife with tropes that are so bad you can’t help but roll your eyes. Whether it’s cliche beam fights or bringing characters back from the dead, the genre has plenty of them to go around.

Yet, just because something has been used a lot in anime doesn’t necessarily mean it is automatically a bad thing. There is actually a reason some tropes exist, as they’re so good, you don’t mind that it is being used again.

Below, we’ve compiled a list of a few of those anime tropes, explaining why they aren’t actually that annoying.

Tournament Arcs

Best Anime Tropes

When it comes to arc-based tropes, tournaments have to be the one cliche that fans never mind seeing, especially when it is done right. Whether it’s a simple test of finding out who is the best or life or death stakes, this anime trope makes for such a fun storytelling device.

It allows shows to introduce new characters, spotlight lesser-used ones, and even throw in a few surprise wins here and there. My Hero Academia’s U.A. Sports Festival is a great example of this.

A Fan Is Remastering The Simpsons: Hit and Run - Including Hand-Drawing All the Cutscenes

1 year 9 months ago

A dedicated fan is creating a remaster mod for The Simpsons: Hit & Run – while also hand-drawing every cutscene for the game in the classic Simpsons style.

El Gato Del Tejado on YouTube uploaded a video showing their progress so far, which includes the complications that occur when remastering a near-two decade old game by yourself. One of these issues occurred as El Gato Del Tejado began work on Hit & Run's cutscenes, which are depicted in 3D in the original 2003 version.

"I would love to see the cutscenes of Hit & Run with current 3D technology like [the] Crash Bandicoot remake or Battle for Bikini Bottom," they said in the video. "I don't have much experience in 3D animation, so better to choose 2D."

El Gato Del Tejado explained that they tried using rotoscoping - where animators trace over footage frame by frame - but this only really worked for the backgrounds and not for the actual characters. The only alternative was to draw these by hand, and several pages of research of Simpsons creator Matt Groening's work was shown before the final result. Instead of being in 3D like the original game, the remaster mod will therefore have a cutscene style more akin to the Simpsons cartoon.

A Terrible Gina Carano Thriller Is Somehow Dominating Netflix Right Now

1 year 9 months ago

Some films are just destined for the bargain bin, but that still doesn’t mean you can’t glean some enjoyment from them. Case in point: Daughter of the Wolf has somehow managed to enter Netflix’s Top 10 most watched movies right now. Yes, according to FlixPatrol, the 2019 action-thriller has come out of nowhere to nab the number 10 spot in the streaming giant’s charts today.

The pic stars Deadpool and The Mandalorian’s Gina Carano who plays a former military specialist. After her father passes away, she inherits a large sum of money, and as a result, her son gets captured by a bunch of kidnappers for a hefty ransom. Of course, this badass ex-soldier isn’t going to just lay down and hand over the cash. Instead, she kicks ass and takes names in true renegade style.

Interestingly, Carano isn’t the only familiar face you’ll likely recognise in Daughter of the Wolf. Indeed, Academy award-winning actor and Jaws star Richard Dreyfuss makes an appearance as the big bad villain in true scenery-chewing style. Honestly, on paper, this sounds like it has some potential, perhaps? Unfortunately, critics thought otherwise.

Critically, Daughter of the Wolf holds an underwhelming 22 percent Critical Score on reviews aggregator Rotten Tomatoes and a slightly more respectable 44 percent Audience Score. From what we can gather, both Carano and Dreyfuss are pretty decent in the movie, but a weak script is what lets the film down the most.

Directed by David Hackl (Saw V, Into the Grizzly Maze), Daughter of the Wolf could potentially be an entertaining b-movie in a “turn off your brain” kind of way. I mean, sometimes bad movies can be a fun watch, right? Whether you agree or not, an audience out there sure seems to feel the same way.

Eidos Montreal founder slams decline of Square Enix's Western studios as "train wreck in slow motion"

1 year 9 months ago

Stephane D'Astous, founder and former boss of Deus Ex developer Eidos Montreal, has described Square Enix's handling of its Western studios as a "train wreck in slow motion" in an explosive new interview.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, D'Astous criticised Square Enix's past management of its various Western studios and suggested the recent sale of Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics could have been motivated by a desire to court a buyout by PlayStation.

"It was a trajectory that could be predicted," D'Astous said, discussing the decline of Square Enix's Western studios, and Eidos Montreal in particular. "I left because things were missing at head office. [Pre-Square Enix] Eidos has a great tradition of development teams, but they don't have superior knowledge of how to sell their games. And that was quite clear."

VRChat Has Banned Mods, and the Community Has Gone Wild

1 year 9 months ago

The developer of VRChat has banned all mods for its virtual reality-based social platform, and the community is incredibly unhappy.

As reported by PC Gamer, VRChat announced it would soon introduce Easy Anti-Cheat – a common PC counter-hacking and cheating service used in games including Elden Ring, Fortnite, and more. It's being introduced because, according to the developers, "malicious modified clients allow users to attack and harass others, causing a huge amount of moderation issues".

There were other reasons listed too, with developer VRChat Inc. saying that "even seemingly non-malicious modifications complicate the support and development of VRChat, and make it impossible for VRChat creators to work within the expected, documented bounds of VRChat."

Muv-Luv Alternative Total Eclipse Review – It’s a Big Muv-Luv World Out There

1 year 9 months ago

Muv-Luv Alternative Total Eclipse’s anime series that debuted in 2012 has been, for many western fans, the first contact with the Muv-Luv series, but at long last, the visual novel has been released in English.

It’s worth mentioning that this isn’t the usual scenario with the visual novel originating the anime series, which usually is summarized and oversimplified. Things are quite a bit more complex and you can read all about it in our recent interview with the creators.

That being said, the visual novel does offer a much deeper and wider take on the story compared to the anime, which pretty much ends halfway through the story. With this game, you finally get the whole picture.

I should actually say “almost” the whole thing because this Steam release in English doesn’t include the bonus prologue “Burning of the Imperial Capital” which was added to the Japanese PC version following the launch on consoles.
