New Redfall Update Finally Brings Performance Mode, Stealth Takedowns, And More

6 months 3 weeks ago

Redfall Performance Mode Update Patch Xbox Series X/S

Developer Arkane Studios' multiplayer vampire shooter Redfall launched earlier this year to middling reviews from critics and players alike – Game Informer gave the game a 5 out of 10. Ahead of its launch in May, Xbox revealed that Redfall would only launch with a 30 FPS Quality Mode on Xbox Series X/S, noting that a Performance Mode would arrive at a later unspecified date. Nearly six months later, that date has arrived: Performance Mode is now live in Redfall.

Publisher Bethesda's patch notes about today's Redfall update don't specify how exactly this Performance Mode works, but presumably, it runs the game at 60 FPS. This update also brings some heavily requested features to Arkane as well, including stealth takedowns, more accessibility options, multiplayer communication improvements, and more.

"This patch brings a Performance Mode to Xbox Series X/S, stealth takedowns, new controller settings, accessibility improvements, and much more," the update notes read. "Explore an even more dangerous Redfall with an increased open-world enemy population and new encounters."

Nissin Brazil Releases Cup Noodles x Genshin Impact Commercial

Genshin Impact x Cup Noodles

Nissin Brazil released a commercial for its Cup Noodles collaboration with Genshin Impact. The campaign will sell Cup Noodles with Layla, Yae Miko, and Bennett printed on the packaging. It has not been confirmed whether this collaboration will appear outside of Brazil. [Thanks, Inside Games!]

The advertisement features four actors cosplaying as the characters Hu Tao, Bennett, Yae Miko, and Layla. When Hu Tao attempts to cook and serve udon to Bennett, Yae Miko, and Layla, it doesn’t come out the way she wanted it to. Yae Miko is left speechless at the sight of the noodles, and Bennett is so shocked that he is thrown back in his chair. This is a reference to her The More the Merrier talent. In game, she can also get an additional Suspicious Dish after cooking an item perfectly.

The video also has an animated segment in which cartoon interpretations of Yae Miko, Layla, and Bennett fly off with Cup Noodles. We also get to see what the printing will look like on the Cup Noodles products.

Watch the Cup Noodles Genshin Impact commercial below:

People can actually get Hu Tao in-game again for a limited time. Her rerun banner is live until October 17, 2023.

Genshin Impact is available to download on the PS4, PS5, PC, and mobile devices.

Redfall's Latest Update Finally Adds 60FPS Mode on Consoles

6 months 3 weeks ago

When Redfall launched earlier this year, one of the most highly requested features was adding an option to play the Xbox Series X/S version at 60 frames per second - and that request has finally been granted.

In a new blog post, publisher Bethesda Softworks revealed all the new additions and changes introduced in Redfall's second game update. The most notable addition includes a Performance Mode on consoles, allowing both Xbox Series X/S owners to play the game at a higher frame rate.

The addition is much needed following a dwindling player count in recent months and controversy ahead of release that the console versions would be locked at 30 FPS. Redfall's second major update also introduces improved performance and stability across "a wide range of hardware" configurations on PC, along with addressing several issues to graphical corruption that would occur after players with an AMD GPU would change the game's resolution in the settings.

Tales of Symphonia Wanted Posters

Kenji Anabuki, the director of Scarlet Nexus and Tales of Xillia 2, illustrated wanted posters of characters from Tales of Symphonia for the game’s 20th anniversary. The wanted posters were shown off on the Tales of Series Events official social media account. They join the Lloyd one that actually appeared in the original game

Anabuki replied to the official reveal post, apologizing for what he believed are poorly drawn illustrations. In addition to the protagonist, Lloyd Irving, nine remaining characters from Tales of Symphonia were also illustrated on wanted posters. Genis Sage, Sheena Fujibayashi, Regal Bryant, Kratos Aurion, Presea Combatir, Colette Brunel, Zelos Wilder, and Raine Sage are pictured.

Bandai Namco announced more festivities in celebration of the 20th anniversary of Tales of Symphonia. A festival, during which the Japanese voice cast of the game will make an appearance, will be held on October 21, 2023.

Tales of Symphonia is a classic JRPG developed by Namco Tales Studio. It was the fifth installment in the Tales series. It was originally released on the GameCube in Japan in 2003, with North American and European localizations releasing in 2004.

Over 100 Developers of Just Cause, Contraband at Avalanche Studios Have Unionized

6 months 3 weeks ago

Over 100 developers at Avalanche Studios Group, the studio behind the Just Cause franchise and upcoming Xbox-exclusive Contraband, have joined Swedish trade union Unionen. And now, they are bargaining with Avalanche management over their contract.

IGN confirmed the news today with an Avalanche Studios union representative, as well as a representative of Unionen and Avalanche PR. Of roughly 500 employees at Avalanche, over 100 of them are members of Unionen. Earlier this year, these members formed a "club," or local union board, in order to bargain directly with Avalanche management over specific benefits. Negotiations began last week and are ongoing, and additionally include employees who are members of a different union, Sveriges Ingenjörer.

Union membership in Sweden works somewhat differently than many of the studio unions we've seen in the United States thus far. In Sweden, eligible workers are allowed to join a trade union at any time without a union election at their workplace, and a long history of collective bargaining in the country has resulted in a deep intertwining of unions, companies, and labor laws. Roughly 70% of the country is involved in a union (per data shared by Unionen), and it's more common to have a union at one's workplace than not. This, however, marks the first time unions have gone to the bargaining table with Avalanche in its 20 year history.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage Looks Backwards When It Should Leap Forward

6 months 3 weeks ago

A hidden blade in the crowd was, from the very start, the core fantasy of Assassin’s Creed. Across 16 years of iteration and innovation it has remained the series’ soul. Despite the focus drifting into an action-oriented design, a silent kill using that iconic retractable wrist blade has always been its crown jewel. Even Valhalla’s Eivor, a viking warrior, uses the hidden blade. But it’s no secret that stealth in Assassin’s Creed is not what it used to be, and that’s what made Mirage such an enticing prospect: a chance to get back to what Assassin’s Creed was made for.

Mirage did just that. But it perhaps took the mission brief a little too literally. Rather than embrace modern stealth design and make a sneaky Assassin’s Creed for the current day, developer Ubisoft Bordeaux has crafted a throwback to the earliest days of the series. It’s a cute idea to celebrate (last year’s) 15th anniversary, but it also makes for a game that feels stuck in the past. With renewed focus, though, Mirage’s flaws could become the foundations for an exciting new era.

Baldur's Gate 3 now lets you change your name thanks to Hotfix #9

6 months 3 weeks ago

Life may be full of regrets, but if one of those regrets is that you decided to call your Baldur's Gate 3 character Bumfart the Third in a moment of weakness, there's some good news: the game's latest hotfix will finally let you change their ill-conceived name.

That's the headline feature for Baldur's Gate 3's Hotfix #9 (or at least it is if you're a remorseful Bumfart), but there's more where that came from. The Magic Mirror, for instance, will - as well as enabling the aforementioned renaming unshaming - allow you to customise your hirelings if their outward appearance isn't to your liking.

Developer Larian notes the same restrictions apply to hirelings that apply when changing the appearance of the player character - presumably meaning you can give them a full aesthetic makeover to suit your dubious whims but you're stuck with their original race, sub race, and any cosmetic modifications resulting from gameplay.

Square Enix Shares FFVII Remake ‘Tifa’s Theme’ Jazz Arrangement

From time to time, Square Enix shares songs from Final Fantasy games on social media. This serves as a means to hear an isolated track, perhaps one that people might not know how to otherwise find outside of the game. The one that appeared on October 6, 2023 is the FFVII Remake “Tifa’s Theme (Jazz Arrangement).”

In-game, people can find this version of her personal theme song on the juke box. As the title suggests, it is a more jazzy version of her theme. It was arranged by Eijiro Nakagawa that includes other instruments in addition to the ever-present piano. You can hear it below:

The NVC Crew's Must-Play Nintendo Switch Games You Might Have Missed

6 months 3 weeks ago

The Nintendo Switch will be an astounding seven years old in March, which is kind of hard to believe. Its longevity and its popularity means it has one of the best, if not the best, libraries of games in history. With so many incredible games to choose from, we turned to the members of the NVC cast, past and present, to come up with Switch hidden gem recommendations. There's almost certainly something in this article you'll love.

Game List

  • The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles
  • Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
  • The Touryst
  • Paper Mario: The Origami King
  • Mario Tennis Aces
  • Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido

Everyone knows the name Phoenix Wright, but for some reason no one seems to pay attention to the other entries in the Ace Attorney series that don’t bear his name. It’s why two out of three games in the upcoming so-called “Apollo Justice Trilogy” don’t even feature poor Apollo’s name in the title. So it’s a shame that the best game in Capcom’s long-running legal drama series is so criminally overlooked.

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles takes place over 100 years in the past during Japan’s Meiji era, where themes like globalization and rampant technological innovation are the backdrop for the story. The plot centers on rookie lawyer (and Phoenix Wright ancestor, because of course) Ryunosuke Naruhodo, who travels to the UK to solve mysteries alongside world-famous detective Herlock Sholmes (Yes, that’s spelled correctly).

Metal Gear Solid Voice Actress Jennifer Hale Says She Was Paid $1,200 For Naomi Hunter Role

6 months 3 weeks ago

Metal Gear Solid voice actress Jennifer Hale has said she was paid $1,200 for her role as Naomi Hunter in the original 1998 game.

As spotted by Genki on Twitter, the voice actress confirmed the amount on the My Perfect Console podcast while sharing her desire for video game voice actors to earn residuals.

Hale was recorded as saying in a 2011 New Yorker article that Metal Gear Solid made $270 million, though said on the My Perfect Console podcast (released October 3, 2023): "the figure I heard actually was $176 million." While the exact profit is unclear, the original Metal Gear Solid sold more than seven million copies and is considered a monumental success that spawned a franchise still going strong 25 years later.

Hale's comments come just days after members of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) voted to authorise a video game strike. This means negotiators can call for a strike if talks with video game companies don't produce the desired results, of which they've not so far.

The disparity between Hale's alleged payment and the success of Metal Gear Solid is "indicative of what's happening in modern culture", she said, adding she hopes the standard for these payments changes.

Microsoft Will Reportedly Finalize Activision Blizzard Deal On Friday, October 13

6 months 3 weeks ago

Microsoft's long journey to acquire gaming giant Activision Blizzard is finally nearing an end. According to The Verge, a source familiar with Microsoft's plans indicated that it was aiming for Friday, October 13, as a date to close the deal. Ignoring the infamy of the date (it seems Microsoft and Activision Blizzard executives aren't very superstitious), it's not a surprising day to choose. Back in July, the two parties in the deal jointly agreed to extend the deadline of their agreement to October 18 in order to sort out any further regulatory concerns. At the time of publishing, that date is only twelve days away, so the deal would have to be closed soon.

A two-year break made Axis Football 2024 feel crunchy, yet smoother

6 months 3 weeks ago

Correction: In 2022 the Axis series switched from titling its games for their current year to titling them for next year. Since I skipped last year's installment, and searches for "Axis Football 2022" brought up nothing, I got horribly confused and wrongly stated that the series skipped 2022 entirely. I apologise for this embarrassing error, and for not realising it until the exact moment everyone at RPS went home for the weekend. Although that latter part is at least quite funny.

Axis Football 2024 is part of the little Americaball series that could. Since 2019 I've settled into a habit of skipping every second entry, only to learn that this time, its developers did too.

The result is still iterative improvement, but a more noticeable one in lots of small ways. Its animations in particular combine more naturally, with players visibly struggling to tackle, catch, or shake off an opponent. It feels like a punchier sport, making the significance of blocking and positioning clearer, and bringing out the drama that its coaching mode in particular really thrives on.

Hands-on with AMD FSR 3 frame generation - taking the fight to DLSS 3

6 months 3 weeks ago

Last Friday, AMD finally released FSR 3 frame generation, its answer to Nvidia's DLSS 3. Two titles had supported added: Forspoken and Immortals of Aveum. We'd already seen demos of both games under controlled conditions at Gamescom back in August, but this was our first chance to go hands-on and to truly put FSR 3 through its paces. The verdict? Image quality in terms of generated frames is impressive, but elsewhere there are some fundamental issues AMD needs to address.

Let's quickly review what frame generation is about. Nvidia kicked this all off with DLSS 3, and in many respects, FSR 3 follows the exact same principles. The next frame is rendered and the one beyond that too, then via a combination of optical flow analysis informed via inputs from the game engine - such as motion vectors, for example - an intermediate frame is generated that slots in between them. Frame-rate then typically receives an extraordinary boost - in my tests with FSR3 in Immortals of Aveum on an RX 7900 XTX at 4K resolution, it's a 71 percent boost compared to standard rendering.

I'm careful in using words to describe the frame-rate uplift, because similar to DLSS 3, I don't think you can call it 'extra performance' as such, even though both Nvidia and AMD will likely use that term. The game itself is still performing as it was without frame generation and in fact, the extra calculations required to generate the intermediate frame have a cost of their own, so one might even argue that frame generation reduces performance.

After a rare price drop, Nvidia's RTX 4060 Ti has hit $370 in the US

6 months 3 weeks ago

The RTX 4060 Ti has emerged as something of a sweet spot in Nvidia's current-gen graphics card lineup, being more affordable than the RTX 4070 and above while providing better performance per pound than the 4060 below it - despite some reservations over its 8GB VRAM capacity and relatively modest gen-on-gen performance uplift compared to the RTX 3060 Ti. However, if you want access to Nvidia's DLSS 3 frame generation and 3.5 ray reconstruction features, and one of the most power-efficient cards on the market, then the 4060 Ti is definitely worth a look.

The RTX 4060 Ti normally retails for $400 or higher, but today you can pick up the Zotac Twin Edge OC model for just $370, a sweet $60 savings versus MSRP on one of the best-looking and highest-clocked 4060 Ti models.

Dave the Diver getting crabs, lobsters, new missions, and more in October content update

If Dave the Diver is great (which it officially is, of course) then it stands to reason that more Dave the Diver will also be great. So prepare to be showered in additional greatness when Dave the Diver's first proper content updates arrives "real soon".

Dave the Diver's previous big update, which released in August, was predominantly focused on quality of life improvements, and while there're plenty more of those stuffed into October's update, we get a bunch of new content too.

The glacier area, for instance - which primarily exists as a story-focused location with fewer missions compared to its counterparts right now - will receive new quests. Additionally, the ocean is set to welcome new species - crabs and lobsters - both requiring players to use special traps to catch. Oh, and a lobster party event will be added to coincide with their arrival.

CD Projekt Spent Roughly $125 Million Turning Cyberpunk 2077 Around Post-Launch

6 months 3 weeks ago

CD Projekt spent $125 million on Cyberpunk 2077 post-launch, repairing the game's reputation with the Edgerunners and Update 2.0 patches alongside the well-received Phantom Liberty expansion.

CD Projekt announced on October 5 that the expansion starring Idris Elba cost a hefty 275 million Polish Zloty (around $62.7 million) to develop and approximately 95 million Polish Zloty (around $21.6 million) to market.

Chief financial officer Piotr Nielubowicz also said during the CD Projekt Investor Day presentation that bringing Cyberpunk up to next-gen console standards, presumably including the game-changing Update 2.0, cost 178 million Polish Zloty (around $40.9 million).

The three figures together, combining the cost of Phantom Liberty with the amount spent bringing Cyberpunk 2077 back from its poor state at launch, total 546 million Polish Zloty, so around $125.9 million.

Cyberpunk 2077 itself cost 1.2 billion Polish Zloty, or around $316 million at the time. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt comparatively cost 306 million Polish Zloty, around $81 million at the time, though with inflation comes closer to $105 million.

Stardew Valley Developer Concerned Ape Reveals Four New Haunted Chocolatier Screenshots

6 months 3 weeks ago

Stardew Valley developer Eric 'Concerned Ape' Barone has celebrated reaching one million followers on social media website X by releasing four new screens for his upcoming game the Haunted Chocolatier.

The new stills show off Barone’s distinctive pixel art style while highlighting a series of in-game environments, including a wooded area in which a familiar red-coated character can be seen firing an arrow at a monster, and a quirky saloon/homely interior.

We also got a look at a library hosting a spooky skeleton and four books that positively reek of mystery, as well as a closer view of the town square glimpsed in the October 2021 reveal trailer, which features an ornate mermaid fountain.

“Loving the style,” wrote Redditer darkest4 on a post showcasing the new images. “Quite curious about the skill bar only having four slots it looks like. Quite different from Stardew." _Bowtye_ said: “Hurry, let’s get to 2M followers on twitter to get 4 more screenshots!”

Barone first discussed the project that would become The Haunted Chocolatier all the way back in 2017, less than two years after the release of Stardew Valley. "With my next game I want to go all out with my ideas, take things to the extreme, create an even richer and more detailed game world... And delight players with continuous hand-crafted experiences," said the Stardew creator at the time.

Final Fantasy 14 Players Debate Which Garlean Antagonist Has the Best Drip

6 months 3 weeks ago

Those power-hungry villains vying for control of Final Fantasy 14’s Garlean Empire can’t seem to agree on much. Still, if there’s one thing that unites them, it’s their love of oversized weapons and intimidating suits of armor. With an appearance that looks something like a Warframe mixed with a Power Rangers villain, they’re some of the most memorable character designs in the game.

Instead of the constant back-stabbing between Final Fantasy 14‘s villainous empire, maybe it’s time to just let the fashion do the talking. Tim Sweeney Admits Epic Games Had 'Financial Problem' 10 Weeks Prior to Studio Layoffs

6 months 3 weeks ago

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has admitted the company was grappling with a "financial problem" 10 weeks before announcing sweeping layoffs, in an unexpected admission during Unreal Fest earlier this week.

In a post on the social media platform X (spotted by Polygon), user @ImmatureGamerX uploaded a video recorded during one of the sessions available on the first day of the annual conference focused on Unreal Engine. However, this session is not included in the live streams available to the public.

Sweeney elaborated more on Epic's financial woes that led to the company laying off 830 employees late last month. Sweeney explained that management became aware of how dire their financial difficulties were just 10 weeks before the announcement.
