Coromon is a Pokémon homage on PC, with more flexible difficulty modes

2 years 1 month ago

I played Pokémon Red back in the day and I've never been able to go back to the simplistic JRPG since. Each game in the series hews so closely to the formula - and rightly so - that I don't have the appetite to play through it a second time.

I'm all for other people making their own original spin on that monster-taming formula. Coromon, out now on Steam, looks like it might be less a spin on those older 2D Pokémon games than a straight homage, however.

Rune Factory 5 Review – Enduring Rough Edges For Great Reward

2 years 1 month ago

Reviewed on: Switch
Publisher: XSEED Games
Release:
Rating: Teen

Some games, like The Sims and Animal Crossing, draw you in with their comfortable routine, easing you into the mechanics and letting you make the experience your own. The Rune Factory series exemplifies this gameplay style, blending farming, socializing, and dungeon crawling.

As someone who has played the franchise since the Story of Seasons spin-off’s first entry 15 years ago, I’ve always loved how the action/RPG captures a sense of discovery. Whether it’s unearthing a new locale that provides fresh items and monsters to raise or learning more about the eccentric people of the town, there is a satisfying sense of progression in the nigh-endless options for how to spend days. Rune Factory 5 succeeds in this regard, and in many ways, it is one of the better entries in the series. Unfortunately, some technical issues, like horrible framerate, alongside poorly designed combat and upgrade systems, dilute the experience.

Halo Infinite Studio Reveals Changes Coming in Season 2

2 years 1 month ago

New additions and changes will be coming in the upcoming Season 2 for Halo Infinite, developer 343 Industries announced in a Halo Waypoint blog post today. The blog post details much of the feedback given during the game’s first season, and how the studio plans to implement desired features or fixes into the game.

As announced last month, the new Arena map Catalyst and new Big Team Battle map Breaker will be added to matchmaking on the first day of the season. Game mode King of the Hill will also be introduced into multiple playlists alongside the returning Attrition mode.

Some of the changes coming in Season 2 include asymmetrical Weapon Rack spawns in BTB will be fixed, melee fights should be more consistent with less players awkwardly running through others or missing, a damage increase to the Ravager weapon, and the Warthog should be less prone to flipping or bouncing while driving.

The blog post also addresses that the team will be continually improving PC performance during Season 2 and beyond and has no plans to give the option to disable crossplay, only that future updates will bring “improvements to our anti-cheat systems to help ensure better matchmade experiences.” Check out the full list of changes and explanation in the blog post.

Halo infinite is now available for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One. The game’s Season 2 will be called Lone Wolves and is scheduled to launch on May 3.

Elden Ring Ainsel River Guide: Bosses, Treasures, Ranni's Quest

2 years 1 month ago

Ainsel River is one of the optional underground zones in Elden Ring. It’s located beneath Liurnia of the Lakes in the upper west section of the world map, and as such, it can be accessed from the Ainsel River Well in that zone. The Ainsel River Well is only one of the locations from which you’ll be able to access the Ainsel River, but the way this zone is set up can be confusing. It’s split into a south side and a north side, neither of which connect directly unless you leap from the north to the south side in the Uhl Palace Ruins, above where the Hermit Merchant is located.

There are a few important sections to understand, including the Nokstella, Eternal City subregion and its tie to Ranni’s questline, which is necessary to unlock Ranni’s secret ending. You’ll need to enter the north side of the map by finding the Fingerslayer Blade and progressing Ranni’s quest up until you gain access to Renna’s Rise, which contains the Waygate that teleports you to the Ainsel River Main site of grace. Both sides of the zone contain valuable treasure and there is only one merchant located on the south side of the zone.

Game Infarcer: Rock Paper Scissors Review - Best Game Ever? (4K)

2 years 1 month ago

Once in a great while, a game comes around that changes the face of what’s possible in the medium. A title that infuses enrapturing environmental storytelling, unforgiving strategic battles, and graphics that challenge our perception of the uncanny valley. From developer Human Hand comes Rock Paper Scissors, a reimagining of what we thought the hands were capable of.

Click here to watch embedded media

Rock Paper Scissors is deceptively simple. Players choose three separate ways of conquering their opponent in a highly technical duel of the minds. A player forms their hands into iconic tools of destruction in an attempt to best their opponents in the quest for glory. Rock beats scissors, scissors beat paper, paper beats rock, and the cycle continues. The latest free-to-play multiplayer phenomenon seems easy to pick up. Still, if the publisher’s latest Twitch influencer campaign is any indication, players will have to come in expecting a tactics-heavy experience if they wish to succeed. The amount of strategy found in Rock Paper Scissors is staggering.

Friday 'Nite: The Fortnite Season 2 Storyline Is Recycling Drama

2 years 1 month ago

Friday 'Nite is a weekly Fortnite column in which GameSpot editor Mark Delaney takes a closer look at current events in the wide world of Fortnite, with a special emphasis on the game's plot, characters, and lore.

A few weeks ago, before the launch of Fortnite Chapter 3, Season 2, I laid out my hopes for the new season, saying that I was interested in playing a more story-driven Season 2 after the debut of Chapter 3 was a bit light in that regard. After two full weeks of story missions and other on-island events, it's safe to say I got my wish; Fortnite Season 2 is packed with new characters critical to the lore and seems intent on including a bundle of new story missions every week. It's just too bad the story being told this season is far too similar to that of previous chapters.

In Chapter 2, Season 7, aliens attacked. The emergence of an intimidating mothership the width of the entire Fortnite island meant doom for all those living on Apollo, or so we thought. Loopers found themselves ideologically divided between those who welcomed the alien invaders, such as Sunny, the ska-dancing host of the welcoming committee, and those who vehemently sought to drive back the extraterrestrial threat, like Doctor Slone and the Imagined Order.

Iron Banter: This Week In Destiny 2 - 2 Tyrants 2 Truths

2 years 1 month ago

Just about every week brings something new to Destiny 2, whether it's story beats, new activities, or interesting new combinations of elements that let players devastate each other in the Crucible. Iron Banter is our weekly look at what's going on in the world of Destiny and a rundown of what's drawing our attention across the solar system. (Sorry, I don't have an April Fools' joke ready, so this is just going to be an actual, serious column.)

We're six weeks beyond the launch of The Witch Queen, and things have slowed down and relaxed a bit. The major story beats of the Season of the Risen seem to be over, Rhulk has been dealt with, and we're coasting through some high-level content like Grandmaster Nightfall Strikes and the Master version of Vow of the Disciple as we wait for Destiny's next content season to roll around at the end of May.

The lull makes this a good time to look to the future to speculate where things are going next. Coming out of The Witch Queen's campaign, with Savathun and Rhulk now dead, it's an open question as to where things are headed. But The Witch Queen has left us with some clues as to what might be on the horizon, as has the Season of the Risen. We might have just wrecked a couple of tyrants, but there are two more who seem to be about to step back into the spotlight: Calus and Rasputin.

Game Infarcer: Zendaya Returns In Fortnite X Euphoria Crossover

2 years 1 month ago

fortnite crossover

Announced today via a press release, Epic Games is partnering with HBO Max to promote a number of the streaming service's exclusive offerings – the first being the fictitious high school drama taking the internet by storm. The official Fortnite X Euphoria crossover event promises to introduce several exciting features to the battle royale, including unlockable emotes, weapon wraps, and of course, exclusive battle pass skins. Reprising her role as troubled-teen Rue Bennett, Zendaya returns to the Fortnite item shop only months after her debut as MJ in last year's Spider-Man: No Way Home event.

The featured skin can be purchased with 2,800 V-Bucks, the game's premium currency, and features Rue's iconic unkempt look. By completing in-game challenges, players can upgrade the avatar with the protagonist's maroon hoodie that hasn't been washed since the show's first season. Lastly, you can complete your look with Bennett's Back Bling, a torn-up backpack sure to be confiscated by Principal Hayes.

"We really wanted to bring the world of Euphoria to life in our game," says Creative Director Donald Mustard. Speaking about new map locations Moonlight Rollerway and East Highland High School, Mustard continues, "Our number one priority was to make these places feel authentic for fans of the show. Not only are the halls of East Highland crawling with hostile bully NPCs, but we also wanted to make these teenagers look nothing like real-life teenagers. No, these are fully-matured, aging adults. This is Euphoria, after all."

Here's What Other Games Should Steal From Elden Ring

2 years 1 month ago

From Software's games have always had a somewhat niche audience, but with the release of Elden Ring, the size of that audience seems to have exploded. The Soulsborne formula works exceedingly well when applied to the template for open-world games, it turns out. In fact, you could argue that it's exploring a strange and enormous world, rather than the usual Souls-style difficulty and mechanics, that makes Elden Ring so fun.

The open-world genre is pretty expansive, and as with major winners before it, like Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed games or Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Elden Ring is sure to leave a mark on the field. The question is, what should the rest of the open-world genre learn from Elden Ring?

Though there's a lot to like about Elden Ring (as well as quite a few things to be annoyed with), there's one element that developers of other open-world games should take note of and use liberally, because it alters the entire feel and scope of these games: the field boss.

Field bosses in Elden Ring are bosses you run into while just wandering in the world, outside of dungeons. They're bosses, but, you know, out in the field. They're not a major change to open-world design, per se--games like Horizon Forbidden West have monster robot creatures like the Thunderjaw or Tremortusk just wandering around its world, and you might even get a similar boss fight scenario in Breath of the Wild with its tough Lynel enemies scattered throughout the world. The difference is in how Elden Ring handles such encounters, how many of them there are, and what they mean for the world at large.
