Carto's delightfully hand-drawn map quest begins today

3 years 5 months ago

Gosh, what I’d give to have the cartographic powers of Carto‘s leading lass. It’d make the commute a hell of a lot quicker if I could just pick up a square kilometre of Leith and plop it down next to my flat. Sunhead Games’ adorable, map-shifting puzzler sets off today, letting you step in and solve some lovely geographical jigsaw puzzles.

Valorant's new bird-throwing agent Skye arrives today

3 years 5 months ago

Today, Riot’s tactical FPS Valorant says hello to a new agent. Australian healer Skye will not just treat your wounds, but she’ll throw various animals at your enemies to blind and stall them while she’s at it. She’s also very cute, and looks a bit like Artemis from Hades.

This patch, version 1.11, comes with a bunch of changes to some of the other characters, too, and even plonks the new map Icebox into competitive rotation.

Netflix is doing an Assassin's Creed TV show, and it should be a direct sequel to the movie

3 years 5 months ago

A still from the Assassin's Creed movie where Aguilar the assassin is fighting a couple of baddies. I have added a speech bubble so he is saying 'I walked so Netflix could soar'

I’m dead serious, on both counts. Netflix’s NX Twitter account just Twote out a little teaser for a live action Assassin’s Creed Netflix Original Series. Right now there’s no date, no hint at the setting, and no actors attached. It is a few bars of that musical sting we all love, and the AssCreed logo with an N in it.

Dell's early Black Friday deals shave 15% off a bunch of gaming laptops

3 years 5 months ago

A photo of the Dell Inspiron G3 15 gaming laptop

The early Black Friday deals season is well and truly underway, as Dell are the latest retailer to give us a sneak peek of their upcoming Black Friday deals. Naturally, there are only a few deals worth noting at this point in time, as the bulk of their traditional ‘doorbuster’ deals will be arriving closer to Black Friday proper on November 27th. Still, as a taster of what’s to come, 15% off a bunch of their G5 and G7 gaming laptops certainly isn’t a bad place to start, especially when it means you can currently get a Core i7 and GTX 1660 Ti model for just over £1000.

Gears 5 is replacing Marcus Fenix with Dave Bautista, if you want?

3 years 5 months ago

Dave Batista as Marcus Fenix in Gears 5, weirdly.

Continuing Gears Of War’s weird dalliance with celebrity, Gears 5 is adding Dave Bautista as a replacement actor for John DiMaggio’s Marcus Fenix. They’ve made Dave’s face and had him re-record all of Fenix’s lines so your man Drax The Destroyer fully replaces the old man of Gears, because reasons. Mystifying. It’ll be optional, mind. Some more-substantial newness is coming in the form of the first Gears 5 story DLC, named Hivebusters.

Cyberpunk 2077 dev asks for “trust” in light of cut content concerns

3 years 5 months ago

A CD Projekt Red developer has addressed concerns about cut content in Cyberpunk 2077. Fans have been talking about the old alpha footage of the game that came out back in 2018, pointing to features shown, like wall running, that the devs have since announced will no longer be part of it.

Senior level designer, Miles Tost, explained that content gets cut from games a lot, and asks fans to trust that they know what they’re doing with their own game.

Baby Yoda, the Yoda that’s also a baby, is coming to Star Wars: Squadrons as part of a new set of decorative ship bits. New Republic pilots will be able to have the breakout star from Disney’s Galaxy High School Musical sitting on their dashboard, though it’s only a model – he won’t be fiddling with your radio. EA have said they’ve no plans for post-launch content and it seems this is just a cheeky bonus to market season two of the Disney+ show.

Hadr is a game about a cloth and it made me feel like a serial killer

3 years 5 months ago

A screenshot of the cloth in Hadr covering a birdcage, except I have drawn a childish angry face on it with MS Paint

Hadr is an indie puzzle game that one would, I suppose, mostly describe as physics-based, if we were being very dry about it. You are a cloth, or several bits of cloth, depending on the level, and anything that you can cover up will vanish. A birdcage. A lamp. Most of a sofa. Whomph. Gone. I suspect is intended to be melancholic and floaty.

Except. Except. I found it incredibly sinister.

Have You Played… She Remembered Caterpillars?

3 years 5 months ago

A screenshot of a puzzle in She Remembered Caterpillars, with a red square spore, a blue circle one and a purple bucket shaped one at different points on a connected series of raised rocky cliff paths. They're connected by strange caterpillar bridges of the same colours. She Remembered Caterpillars

is a very good puzzle game that combines colours and logic and, yes, squishy caterpillars, with a sweet story about science and parenting. Also mushrooms, sort of.

My feelings about mushrooms as a concept are complicated and often fluctuate, so these days if I think about it too long She Remembered Caterpillars is close to being a horror game for me. So let’s not think about it too long.

Solving crimes in Cyberpunk 2077 needs to be less like Arkham and more like Paradise Killer

3 years 5 months ago

A close up of Judy, an NPC in Cyberpunk 2077, who has plugged you into a machine and is teaching you to use Braindance.

As we get closer to Cyberpunk 2077 launch day (which I imagine will be like when Elon Musk punts one of his cars into space just because), my life has become increasingly blurred. By day I am immersed in video game stuff, looking back through the Night City Wires and prepping as much as possible for a huge action RPG that will consume at least 100 hours of my waking life. By night I am drinking tea and watching police procedurals. At the weekend: both, simultaneously.

It’s got me thinking about the way detectoring is going to be a thing in Cyberpunk, ‘cos I reckon it’ll either be really good or really annoying.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 review

3 years 6 months ago

A photo of MSI's GeForce RTX 3090 Gaming X Trio inside a PC.

Billed as the “big ferocious graphics card” (or BFGPU) of Nvidia’s new RTX 30 line-up, the RTX 3090 is effectively their new Titan card in all but name. With a huge 24GB of GDDR6X memory and a massive 10496 CUDA cores, its specs look positively beastly compared to the RTX 3080, but in practice it’s anything but. While Nvidia have happily talked up how the RTX 3090 can do 8K gaming, 8K capture and 8K this and that in the run-up to launch, the RTX 3090 is one of the most pointless graphics cards I’ve tested in ages. It’s just not necessary when the [cms-block] can already hit those lovely 60fps frame rates at 4K (the only resolution that actually matters right now given the microscopic number of 8K displays out there right now), especially when current prices will set you back almost another £1000 / $1000 on top.

Nightdive's Blade Runner remaster is delayed

3 years 6 months ago

Ray McCoy out to pick up dinner in a Blade Runner game wallpaper.

Nightdive’s remaster of Westwood’s great Blade Runner adventure game will not launch this year after all. Turns out, reverse-engineering a game to rebuild it in a whole new engine without access to the original assets is a bit of work. I still don’t see why they’re putting this much effort into it when a perfectly fine version is available on GOG, running in ScummVM. Especially when the first bit Nightdive that showed, an update version of the opening cutscene, looked worse than the original.

Ghostrunner review

3 years 6 months ago

Elite cyber ninja? I died 1423 times in Ghostrunner. Over a seven hour campaign that roughly works out at three deaths a minute. That’s the kind of toll even today’s shower of political leaders would struggle to shrug off. A body count so vast I wonder if I ever actually understood Ghostrunner or simply fluked through. In the same way that I passed my driving test after nine failures: instead of enjoying my right to drive, I remember the nine out of ten people who think I’m a danger to the public. In both cases I feel glum despite the victory.
