Yep, the star of Final Fantasy XVI is named Clive. Clive! A classic dad name. “Unexpected events set Clive on a dark and dangerous road to revenge,” Square Enix say. The joy of loving Theseus from Hades

3 years 6 months ago

Supergiant’s rougelike smash hit Hades has taken the world by storm since coming out of early access in September. Unlike a lot of games, fans seem to be in total agreement on all of the game’s main talking points. For example, we all agree that Meg is hot. We also all agree that Zagreus is hot. That Eurydice is hot. That pretty much everyone is hot. Most also agree that, hot or not, Theseus is the worst.

They are all wrong: Theseus is actually the best.

Have You Played… Deep Sky Derelicts?

3 years 6 months ago

Deep Sky Derelicts

is a dungeon crawling game about people rummaging through crumbling old space wreckage for loot, and getting into fights resolved by playing cards in a JRPG-style fight between two sets of gits. There’s a sort-of-deck-building mechanic where your set of cards is determined by what gear you have, and people either tend to really like that, or really not like it. Mostly though, people like to argue about whether it’s anything like Darkest Dungeon or not, despite having a similarly Mike Mignola-esque art style.

I got it when it launched in 2018, and I liked it for precisely 10 hours of play – I thought the visuals and the music were superb, but it felt a little empty on day one for my liking. Nevertheless, after two years of regular updates, I have returned to it, and it’s lovely. It might only be 10 hours’ worth of lovely this time, too, before the core appeal fades, but then it will have been 20 hours, which is almost a full day, innit.

Then, on December 5th, the super-powered RX 6900 XT will arrive to tackle Nvidia’s [cms-block].

Could AMD's Smart Access Memory be the secret sauce of Big Navi?

3 years 6 months ago

A picture from AMD's RDNA 2 presentation showing how AMD's Smart Access Memory will let their Ryzen 5000 CPUs have full access to the GPU memory on their RX 6000 graphics cards.

AMD showed off their first three [cms-block] GPUs earlier this evening, showing us how their brand-new RDNA 2 architecture will take their next-gen graphics card family to new heights in 4K gaming – and a big part of that is down to one of AMD’s intriguing new features: Smart Access Memory.

You’ll need one of AMD’s new Ryzen 5000 CPUs to take advantage of it, but when you combine them both together, AMD claim you’ll be able to squeeze up to 13% more performance out of your PC as a result, allowing you to get even more out of your system than you would with rival hardware. At first glance, it certainly makes a compelling case to go all-in on AMD hardware for your next PC upgrade, and it might just make those higher-than-expected Ryzen 5000 prices worth the extra bump over Intel’s 10th Gen Comet Lake CPUs. Here’s how it works.

Deleting your Facebook account will also delete your Oculus games

3 years 6 months ago

Oculus are making Facebook accounts mandatory for their new VR headsets and ending support for Oculus accounts on January 1st, 2023. It’s a decision which Katharine rightly says sucks. Worse yet, because your Oculus headset and Facebook account will be inextricably tied, it turns out your Oculus purchases will be deleted if you ever choose to delete your Facebook account. It makes sense, in a bleak way, and definitely also sucks.

Ubisoft's VR game AGOS: A Game Of Space is out now

3 years 6 months ago

Ubisoft’s new VR game is sending you and your goggles out into space to ferry a bunch of humans fleeing Earth. It’s called AGOS: A Game Of Space, presumably because the acronym got nervous and felt the need to immediately explain itself. What’s the point if you were just going to—oh, never mind. All game names are too long anyway. AGOS has launched today, so you can zoom about in space searching for a new home to plant those humans on.

Microsoft are still looking to buy more studios

3 years 6 months ago

The Dragonborn faces a dragon in an Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim screenshot.

Microsoft have been on a rampaging buying mid-size game studios in recent years, escalating to the point that they bought chuffing ZeniMax in September. But even buying the studios behind The Elder Scrolls, Doom, Dishonored, Fallout, and so on has not sated their desire for acquisition and expansion. In a recent interview, Xbox head Phil Spencer explained he thinks they still have a few holes in their lineup, a few types of games they’re not yet making internally. And with Xbox Game Pass being a big part of their plans, they really want to be able to do everything.

Of course Baldur's Gate 3's most romanced character is the smug wizard

3 years 6 months ago

I love a good game with romanceable companions. I have not yet had the pleasure of playing Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3 to flirt with it’s eligible characters, but thanks to yesterday’s update, I know exactly who you’re all falling for. Turns out 33% of players have romanced Gale, while 31% have taken more of a liking to Shadowheart.

Sure, Larian mentioned a load of the fixes in the latest patch, too, but I think we need to talk about your taste in fictional lovers.

Preview: The Sims 4's Snowy Escape DLC might be Skynet

3 years 6 months ago

The latest chunk of DLC for The Sims 4 is arriving on November 13th. Entitled Snowy Escape, it’s a wintery-themed one this time, so is very seasonal, and I got to play a bunch of a preview build. Snowy Escape adds a new world, Mt. Komorebi, with three neighbourhoods – one of which is the mountain itself where your Sims can ski and snowboard and climb to their hearts content (or at least until they really need a wee).

It also gives your Sims the capacity to nurture deep, bubbling hatred that they remember over time. I fear this spells doom for us all.

Chris Metzen left Blizzard back in 2016, after a long career in roles such as creative director of World Of Warcraft and Overwatch, co-design lead on StarCraft and many more. He had been at the studio for 23 years, and so he announced his retirement, for it was time to rest.

It wasn’t a long rest, however, because Metzen got the itch to start creating cool fictional worlds once more. Now he’s joined up with another former Blizz dev, Mike Gilmartin, to make tabletop games at a new company, Warchief Gaming.

Cyberpunk 2077 devs reportedly learned of delay when we did

CD Projekt Red announced yesterday that, once again, they were delaying the launch of Cyberpunk 2077. The dystopian RPG’s new (and potentially even final) release date is December 10th. This was a surprise to us, who’ve seen CDPR repeatedly say no more delays. And reportedly, the people making the game found out about the new delay at the same time we all did. Might not be the nicest surprise when you’re having to work crunch hours.

Watch Dogs Legion review

3 years 6 months ago

A menacing fellow in a gold vest and hat waves a crowbar threateningly at someone just off-camera.

Diane Ganguly is a totally ordinary Londoner; one of the nine million NPCs who put the “Legion” in Watch Dogs Legion, since they can all be recruited and made playable. She’s a talent agent in her early thirties, with a pet owl, an anti-immigration voting record, and a history of going to furry conventions. As I said, totally ordinary. Until now, that is.
