Sea of Thieves Lost Treasures Update Is Live

3 years 9 months ago

The latest Sea of Thieves update, Lost Treasures, is live and offers brave pirates more bang for their booty-seeking buck. It dropped on May 27, boasting a host of changes to the story elements in the game as well as Daily Bounties to ensure that you're always flush with cash.

The official patch notes for the Lost Treasures update mention a host of quality-of-life improvements, but front and center is the improvement to the Tall Tales system: an optional set of narrative experiences that players can use to better explore the world of Sea of Thieves through challenges and more.

Most notably, Tall Tale adventures will now benefit from checkpoints, so that you're not pressured to complete entire adventures in one sitting if you're too busy.

Minecraft Studio Gets Updated Name To Reflect Expansion

3 years 9 months ago

Minecraft developer Mojang is moving into the new decade with a new name--or at least a very slightly revised one. The company has been opening more offices around the world as it expands its focus beyond the popular freeform creation game. As a result, it has changed its name from Mojang to Mojang Studios, with an accompanying logo revision to match. It's even released an accompanying video to showcase the changes, and you can watch it below.

The news comes just as Minecraft celebrates its 11th anniversary recently, with the first version having been released back in May 2009. It's also celebrating a massive milestone: 200 million copies of Minecraft have been sold, with a huge number of active players every month.

The new logo is made up of little gadgets called "Mojangs," appropriately enough, and in the trailer they are turned and twisted around to spell out the studio's name. It sounds like it won't be the last time we hear about the somewhat sentient gizmos, and they should pop up again as we learn about future Mojang Studios projects.

Baldur's Gate 3 Sizzle Trailer Is Out: See It Here

3 years 9 months ago

As a nice surprise for all of us stuck at home, Larian Studios released a new Baldur's Gate 3 trailer on May 29. Baldur's Gate 3 was announced for PC 2019's E3 festivities, so it seems only fitting that we get an announcement on the highly-anticipated RPG even though E3 has been canceled this year. It's shaping up to be one of the biggest role-playing games released in years and comes two decades after the previous game.

You can watch the trailer below.

We spent 2 hours with Baldur's Gate 3 earlier this year and managed to come away with a whole lot of impressions and even more questions.

Google Stadia Overpromised On What It Could Do, Says Take-Two CEO

3 years 9 months ago

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick says that Google Stadia overpromised on its technology, and didn't seem to expand the market like it had hoped. In a talk at the Bernstein Annual Strategic Decisions Conference, Zelnick explained why the company had supported the release of streaming, and he doesn't sound positive on the platform so far.

"Streaming technology is upon us," he said. "The launch of Stadia has been slow. I think there was some overpromising on what the technology could deliver and some consumer disappointment as a result."

Most of his comments, though, were focused on the business aspect. Zelnick was critical on that point as well, appearing to suggest that it doesn't have immediate plans for Stadia and stressing that it wasn't the "game-changer" it was made out to be.

Remember When Xbox One Almost Lost The Console Race?

3 years 9 months ago

It's wild to think how far Microsoft and the Xbox One has come. It started this generation with what even the company has admitted was a huge misstep. The Xbox One's debut was nothing short of a catastrophe borne of mixed messaging that targeted the completely wrong crowd, and what many described at the time as anti-consumer strategies. It was a fumble that presented its competitor, Sony's PlayStation 4, an opportunity. And Sony seized it.

Microsoft hasn't been able to come back from that stumble. PlayStation 4 has maintained a sales lead and owned a great deal of the gaming community's mindshare, but while the Xbox One hasn't been able to gain ground, it has at the very least established steady footing again. The process of recovering has been a long and arduous one, but under the leadership of Phil Spencer, Xbox has worked its way back into the hearts and minds of gamers.

A new era of Xbox is now on the horizon, but in order to confidently move towards the future, it's important to keep in mind lessons from the past. And that's exactly what this episode of Remember When aims to do. It explores the original pitch for the Xbox One, arguably one of the worst sales pitches of all time, and then charts how Microsoft turned it all around to put Xbox in a strong position to achieve success with the Series X.

PS5 / Xbox Series X: Platinum Games Studio Head Clarifies "More Of The Same" Comment

3 years 9 months ago

In 2019, the head of Nier: Automata and Bayonetta developer Platinum Games, Atsushi Inaba, said he was not all that impressed by the next generation of consoles from Sony and Microsoft. He said they offered "more of the same," and those comments led to some debate and discussion, particularly after the enthusiastic praise we've heard from several other developers up to this point. However, he isn't backing down.

Inaba has now clarified his comments, telling Video Games Chronicle that his original words led to "a little bit of backlash" and the perception that he was a snob. Inaba now says he's excited by the fact that the new consoles will allow developers to "do more" as it relates to graphics and technology. However, he stands by his estimation that the leap from the PS4/Xbox One era to the PS5/Xbox Series X era won't be as dramatic as the shift that occurred years ago during previous console transitions.

"If you think back to the generation between Super Nintendo and PlayStation, and how we went from pixel art to 3D polygons… nobody could have ever imagined that a few years prior," Inaba said. "When that stuff started coming out people were just blown away: they weren't ready for it, they weren't anticipating it… it was just so new."

Against The Odds, The Last Of Us 2 Character Is Still Playing PS Vita

3 years 9 months ago

With The Last of Us Part 2 only three weeks away, developer Naughty Dog has shared an extended look at gameplay during a new State of Play livestream. In the gameplay sequence, we caught a glimpse of an interesting easter egg: an NPC hanging out with a PS Vita in her hand. The game is supposed to take place decades after an apocalypse, but Sony's underrated handheld has still managed to survive. The jury is still out on whether its user had modded it to play Super Nintendo games, though.

In the encounter, below, Ellie is seen swimming through some flooded facility controlled by an enemy faction. As Ellie gets out of the water, she holds an enemy NPC hostage to gather some information from her before ultimately taking her life. What's curious about the encounter, though, is that the NPC is seen playing Dennaton Games' breakout title Hotline Miami on a PlayStation Vita. You can hear the track "Hydrogen" bumping in the connected earbuds.

The official Hotline Miami Twitter account chimed in to remind everyone that the twin-stick shooter is, in fact, available on PS Vita. The game is also on Android devices, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS3, PS4, and Xbox One.

Huge Division 2 Story Leak Confirmed By Ubisoft

3 years 9 months ago

Players of The Division 2 might want to be careful if they don't want spoilers. Ubisoft has recently acknowledged a major Division 2 story leak thanks to some audio files left over on the Public Test Server (PTS) which hint at the reappearance of old The Division characters and more.

Massive Entertainment, the studio working on The Division 2, appears to have kept audio files on the PTS which give away the story for the next three seasons of Manhunt targets in the game. For the uninitiated, Manhunts are missions available to those who own the Warlords of New York expansion pack. Essentially, your job is to hunt down major antagonist Aaron Keener, and eliminate his lieutenants along the way.

Each season, Manhunts for new agents (called rogue agents) are introduced, allowing players who have reached Level 40 to continue gallivanting through the city streets in search of bounty targets to take down in exchange for skill mods.

[Update: Patch 2.6.9 is now live on the PTR. Changes include new Necromancer and Demon Hunter sets, skill changes for the Necromancer, and Legendary item changes. The update arrives on PTR a full week after it was originally planned to deploy--according to Blizzard, "additional QA time" was required to address bugs and other issues.]

Original story follows...

Blizzard is issuing a new update to Diablo 3 in the public test realm (PTR) to put it through its paces before it becomes widely available. The 2.6.9 patch was originally going to begin its testing run on Thursday, May 21, but according to an update on the Blizzard forums, the patch has actually been delayed to the week of May 24 (that's this week) to allow for "additional QA time" to fix bugs and other issues. As of May 28, there's been no further word on when the PTR update will arrive and word on the official Diablo account on Twitter has been scarce. We'll report back whenever a release date is shared.

PS5 And Xbox Series X: Mortal Kombat Boss Ed Boon Says People Are Overlooking One Feature In Particular

3 years 9 months ago

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are coming later this year, ushering in a new generation of gaming, and we'll even get to see some of the PS5's game lineup during an event on June 4. Both systems are stacked with a multitude of improved features and capabilities, but there is one in particular that Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon believes people are underestimating. This feature could radically change how we experience games, but it's something that doesn't immediately jump off the page when you think "next gen."

During a recent livestream, Boon said the first thing people tend to ask about with new consoles is how much better the graphics will look. But he believes it's the dramatically improved loading times that might end up being the bigger differentiator between the current generation and next-gen.

"It's funny when these new consoles come out and everybody goes, 'OK, what do the graphics look like?' I think people are underestimating the impact that the almost zero loading time is going to have," he said, as reported by Twinfinite. "That's suddenly going to open doors that weren't considered possible before and I think we haven't even scratched the surface of what will eventually be done with those systems."

Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition Comes With A Nice Free Gift For XC2 Players

3 years 9 months ago

Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition is finally out on Nintendo Switch. The remastered Wii RPG arrives almost three years after the series' most recent installment, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and if you've played that game, you'll find a nice free gift waiting for you.

If you have save data for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 on your Switch, you'll receive a special one-time bonus upon booting up Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition--100,000 gold. Note that you'll only have one chance to claim this bonus, so make sure to select Collect before setting off on your adventure, as you won't be able to receive the gold after you've started the game.

Xenoblade Chronicles has received a number of tweaks and touchups in its move to Switch. Not only have the character models been significantly updated (you can get a better look at the improved models in these screenshots), the game also features an entirely new epilogue story called Future Connected, which follows Shulk and Melia one year after the events of the main game. Xenoblade director Tetsuya Takahashi estimates that Future Connected takes about 10-12 hours to complete if you focus on the story and about 20 hours if you include all of the side content.

[Last Chance] Pokemon Sword & Shield Gigantamax Meowth Raid Event Ending Soon

3 years 9 months ago

Pokemon Sword and Shield's Gigantamax Eevee event has ended, but another previously exclusive Pokemon has taken its place. Until June 2, Gigantamax Meowth will appear in Max Raid dens in both titles, giving you another chance to add one to your collection.

This marks the first time that Gigantamax Meowth can be caught in Sword and Shield. Previously, the Pokemon was offered as a special bonus to players who purchased a copy of either game before January 15. If you missed out on that promotion, this event gives you another opportunity to get the special Pokemon.

Much like Gigantamax Pikachu and Eevee, Gigantamax Meowth is not capable of evolving, but it has an exclusive G-Max move called Gold Rush. On top of dealing damage, G-Max Gold Rush confuses the foe and nets you more money after the battle, making it a great way to rack up the funds.

Xbox Series X Price Prediction: Here's How Much We Think It Will Cost

3 years 9 months ago

For years, Microsoft has been setting the foundation for its next-gen console, Xbox Series X. After having to recover from the blunder of the Xbox One's launch, the company has spent the latter years of this past console generation catering more to the consumer by advocating cross-platform play and backwards compatibility and expanding its service model with things like Xbox Game Pass and the still-in-development Project xCloud.

Still, as we learn more about Xbox Series X's architecture, its games, and what Microsoft has in mind for the future it wishes to cultivate with the console, we still don't know how much it'll cost. Until Xbox Series X launches this holiday, our imaginations will likely continue to run wild, wondering about potential price points--at least until Microsoft finally confirms it during one its Xbox 20/20 streams.

Below you can find a handful of predictions from the team, addressing our thoughts on the subject and how much we'd personally pay for Microsoft's next console, but do let us know your predictions in the comments.

Xbox Series X: Microsoft Does Believe In Generations, Just Differently Than Sony

3 years 9 months ago

The Xbox Series X is shaping up to be a powerhouse system when it launches this holiday season, but Microsoft is taking a very different approach than Sony is regarding game exclusivity and the concept of console generations. If you want to stick with your Xbox One for now, you can, and you'll be able to take past generations of games with you to the new console.

In a tweet on May 29, Xbox games marketing GM Aaron Greenberg stressed that "generations of games" will play on the latest hardware and that it would offer value and choice that we haven't seen from a console launch before. Because next-generation upgrades for Xbox Game Studios titles are free, you'll be able to get them later if you can't get the Xbox Series X immediately.

3 years 9 months ago

Halo 3 is the next game coming to Halo: The Master Chief Collection on PC and those in the Halo Insiders program will be able to play it, or at least a piece of it, very soon. 343 Industries is planning to do a test flight for a selection of campaign missions and multiplayer content, and you'll even get to "Finish the Fight."

Starting in the first half of June, Halo: The Master Chief Collection players in the Halo Insiders program can access Halo 3's content, regardless of whether they're playing via the Microsoft Store or Steam. The following campaign missions are included:

  • Sierra 117
  • The Storm
  • The Ark
  • The Covenant
  • Halo

The titular Halo mission is the final mission in Halo 3, so we don't suggest playing through these quite yet if you haven't already beaten the game on Xbox 360 or Xbox One. Multiplayer options include custom, social, and competitive games, Team Hardcore, Team Slayer, and Team Doubles modes, and several different maps. Classics like Guardian, The Pit, and Valhalla are included in the test flight, and both Forge and the theater will be available for creative-minded players.

Nintendo Switch Buying Guide 2020: Consoles, Controllers, Cases, And More

3 years 9 months ago

Although much of the video game hype this year is around a pair of next-generation consoles, being able to play any kind of video game on a Nintendo Switch is still more than enough for us right now. The Switch thrives because of its versatility in both genre and content (we're finally getting a slew of M-rated titles on a Nintendo device, though families can set parental controls to filter that stuff for their kids). You can play for long stretches on your TV with the Joy-Con or Switch Pro Controller, or you can enjoy your favorite Nintendo Switch game on the go in handheld mode, and you even get motion controls that improve on the fidelity of the Wii Remote's. Multiplayer games, single-player games--they all play beautifully on Nintendo's hybrid device, even if some titles don't run as well as they do on other consoles. We're more than willing to give up graphical fidelity (and occasionally the lack of a robust online multiplayer experience) for the sake of convenience.

The Switch's Game Boy-like ability to play modern, traditionally console games on a handheld is probably the most appealing thing about it. The second-most appealing? The wide variety of accessories. From an outstanding controller and cases to charging stands and more, the Switch has a slew of gadgets that enhance the experience and, at times, change the game entirely.

Mafia 2: Definitive Edition Is A Lousy Remaster But Still An Interesting Game

3 years 9 months ago

Mafia II: Definitive Edition, the new version of the 2010 game available now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, opens with a message that primed me for a game that might not have held up well. It reads:

"Mafia II: Definitive Edition presents the game's narrative content in its original form from 2010. The game includes culturally sensitive content and themes, and is intended only for mature audiences."

In some ways, this feels like an abdication of responsibility for some elements of the game that have aged poorly. And indeed, as I replay the game on my PS4, there are many such parts. Mafia II was never the most sensitive game, and in 2020 the "culturally sensitive content" made me squirm more than it might have 10 years ago. The game's plot contains few women with any real agency, and the script is full of slurs against them, as well as various racist slurs. When your character goes to prison, there are the prerequisite homophobic jokes about the showers.

Battlefield 5's Next Update Will Have Its Final New Content

3 years 9 months ago

In April, Battlefield V developers DICE promised that the game would receive one last big update, which will arrive in June as Update 7.0. The latest "This Week in Battlefield V" update on Reddit confirms that the June content update is coming, and will be the last big one for the game--but a comment made by one developer also clears up some potential misconceptions around the game's path forward.

A comment from Braddock512--the game's community manager--clarifies that while there will not be new content coming to the game, this is not the "final" update. "It's the last content update--but we plan on dropping fixes and there will be the Community Games Update to add more tools to the feature," he writes. "There will be new/returning playlists when Update 7.0/June Update drops."

While major updates are ending, and players should perhaps not expect anything too major after Update 7.0, it sounds like the game won't become static and unchanging after the update.

3 years 9 months ago

Although Sony isn't planning on bringing PS5 exclusives to PS4 too, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan says that one of its upcoming exclusives, The Last of Us Part II, will run on the PS5, presumably at launch.

In an interview with CNET, Ryan confirmed that The Last of Us Part II will run without issue on Sony's next console. Although he made no mention of potential visual upgrades that could accompany the generational jump, he did confirm that the game as it launches next month will be playable on the PS5.

Ryan also mentions that The Last of Us Part II won't feature in the recently confirmed PS5 digital event on June 4, with the event focusing on games that will launch with the PS5 this holiday season, and during the months afterwards.

Minecraft Dungeons: Is Crossplay Supported On PC, PS4, Xbox One, And Switch?

3 years 9 months ago

Minecraft Dungeons, the new dungeon crawler Minecraft spin-off that puts adventuring, looting, and combat above building and crafting, is out now on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One (included in Xbox Game Pass), and Nintendo Switch. The newly renamed Mojang Studios has put a lot into expanding Minecraft's crossplay options over the years so that players can join up in cooperative multiplayer together across different platforms, but does the recently launched Minecraft Dungeons, co-developed by Double Eleven, also support the popular feature? Here's what we know about Minecraft Dungeons crossplay.

Does Minecraft Dungeons Support Crossplay?

No, Minecraft Dungeons does not support crossplay across PC, PS4, Xbox One, or Nintendo Switch--at least, not yet. According to the official FAQ for Minecraft Dungeons, you will only be able to play the game with other players on the same platform for now, but Mojang Studios is looking into "enabling cross-platform play in a future free game update."

However, Minecraft Dungeons still supports both local and online co-op with up to four players at launch, meaning you can still enjoy its multiplayer elements as long as it's on the same platform. But Mojang Studios does note that local co-op and online co-op cannot be played at the same time at launch--so you can either team up with friends locally or connect online, but not both at once.

Top New Video Games Out On Switch, PS4, Xbox One, And PC This Week -- May 24-30, 2020

3 years 9 months ago

This is a great week to revisit some games you may have already played. Mortal Kombat 11 is getting an action-packed epilogue with the Aftermath expansion, and Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition has new story content on Nintendo Switch as well. That's not the only game making a comeback on Switch, either. 2K is launching a trio of big game bundles: BioShock: The Collection, the Borderlands Legendary Collection, and the XCOM 2 Collection. The adventure continues in Minecraft Dungeons and Shantae and the Seven Sirens too.

Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath -- May 26

Available on: PS4, Xbox One, PC, Switch

Aftermath picks up right where the story left off, with Liu Kang setting out to create a new timeline. A new timeline is a great place to introduce new characters, and MK 11 is adding Fujin, Sheeva, and even Robocop, voiced by original actor Peter Weller. If you don't want to spend money on the new story and characters, good news: May 26 is also when a free update drops for all players. This adds new stages and brings back Friendships.
