Where To Buy A Switch: Nintendo Switch Still Out Out Stock

3 years 10 months ago

Though it's not nearly as crucial as hand sanitizer, tissues, toilet paper, and other household goods, the Nintendo Switch console is seeing a major national shortage right now, as major retailers respond to increased demand for online goods due to the coronavirus outbreak. The $300 console is seeing increased demand as more people find themselves stuck indoors and looking for a good way to play some video games.

According to Nintendo, more regular Switch consoles will be restocked soon. "Nintendo Switch hardware is selling out at various retail locations in the US, but more systems are on the way. We apologize for any inconvenience," Nintendo told GameSpot in an email statement.

It's rare to find the regular Nintendo Switch in stock right now, but we've seen it come back into stock on occasion. However, online restocks usually sell out within a minute or less. Some places, like GameStop and Best Buy, let you check availability at your local store, and if you can find it in stock, they may do curbside pickup so you don't even have to go inside. You can check the current listings and availability below. We check for availability frequently and update this story anytime we spot the Switch in stock.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint AI Squadmates Update Delayed To Mid-July

3 years 10 months ago

Ghost Recon: Breakpoint's Title Update 2.0.5--which was targeting a June launch for PC, PlayStation 4, Stadia, and Xbox One--has been delayed, developer Ubisoft Paris confirmed. The studio is now folding that patch into the larger 2.1.0 update that's supposed to arrive sometime in mid-July.

According to a recent developer update, the 2.1.0 patch will come with tons of game changes--some previously outlined in a roadmap the studio shared back in April. This includes various bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements, the next Gunsmith and PvP updates, any planned adjustments from Title Update 2.0.5 (including the DMR exploit), and more. Most notably, the 2.1.0 update will also include the release of AI squadmates, one of the game's most-requested features. Ubisoft said the decision to delay TU 2.0.5 and fold it into the 2.1.0 patch was because its developers are working from home now due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

A new Mythical Pokemon named Zarude was also recently revealed for Sword and Shield.

World Of Warcraft: Shadowlands Reveal Event Pushed Back Due To Protests

3 years 10 months ago

In light of recent and ongoing protests for racial justice and police reform, Blizzard has pushed back its planned reveal event for the next World of Warcraft expansion, Shadowlands. The event, which had been planned for June 9, has been rescheduled with a date to be announced.

The event itself will likely still be hosted by executive producer John Hight and game director Ion Hazzikostas, and it will cover the first details on what will be coming in the new expansion. We already know that Shadowlands will take players to the world of the dead, and looks likely to make some major story shifts after Battle of Azeroth. It will also reduce the level cap to 60, in contrast to most expansions which have raised the level cap.

Blizzard would usually make many of its biggest announcements at BlizzCon, but that event has been canceled due to coronavirus. Blizzard is said to be looking into hosting a digital event in 2021 instead. Several other planned announcements and reveal events have also been postponed, and publishers have offered statements of solidarity and donations to the protests.

3 years 10 months ago

Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition has arrived on Nintendo Switch, and it features a deep battle system with a lot of different mechanics to master. This system is fundamentally similar to the one in Xenoblade Chronicles 2, so if you've played that entry, you'll already be familiar with the basics. That said, there are some notable differences that set the two apart.

While the in-game tutorials do a good job of acclimating you to the various components of Xenoblade Chronicles' battle system, there are some nuances that aren't as well explained. To help you out, we've put together this guide breaking down the battle system's different mechanics and how to effectively use them.

We gave the remastered RPG a 9/10 in our Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition review. Critic Jake Dekker wrote, "Although not every aspect of Xenoblade Chronicles has aged as well as others, Definitive Edition proves that Xenoblade Chronicles is still a fantastic JRPG with an immense amount of strategic depth that's still impressive in 2020."

It can also be an overwhelming one between its vast environments and numerous complex systems, particularly if you've never played the Wii original or the New 3DS port.

Xbox Game Pass--The Best Games That Joined And Left The Service In May 2020

3 years 10 months ago

Xbox Game Pass had a strong month in May 2020 on both Xbox One and PC. In addition to games that joined earlier in the month month like Red Dead Redemption and Final Fantasy 9, the remainder of the month brought four more games to the service, including a new first-party game. It came from one of the world's most-popular franchises and is among the biggest games releasing on Xbox One this year.

That one is out now: Minecraft Dungeons, the spin-off of the persistently popular building game from Mojang Studios. The game takes the familiar trappings of Minecraft like Creepers, Illagers, and pickaxes and fits them into an isometric dungeon-crawling adventure for up to four players. You can also claim Alan Wake, the classic game from Control developer Remedy, and the city-planning sim Cities: Skylines. Each of those will be available across the Xbox One and PC versions of the service, while PC users will also get Plebby Quest: The Crusades. You can check the dates below, with the first ones right now. We've also since learned of a high-profile game coming to Xbox Game Pass in June: No Man's Sky.

Gear Club Unlimited 2 - Tracks Edition DLC Brings Sim-Like Racing And Le Mans To Switch Soon

3 years 10 months ago

A new edition of Gear Club Unlimited 2, the Switch exclusive racer, is releasing later this year. Gear Club Unlimited 2 - Tracks Edition will launch on August 25, and it'll introduce new tracks, features, and a campaign focused on providing an experience closer to real motorsport than what the original release offered. It will also feature all the content and DLC released for the base game so far.

One of the big additions is the 24 hours of Le Mans circuit, which players will be able to compete across from the qualifying session through to the final event. How this will actually work in-game isn't clear yet--we're not sure whether you'll need to run your Switch for 24 hours straight--but it will include pit stops, tire changing, fuel management, and other strategy options that were not available in the original release.

You can watch a teaser trailer for the new Tracks Edition of the racer below.

Digital Store My.Games Offers 90/10 Revenue Split For Game Developers

3 years 10 months ago

The My.Games digital store is currently offering a 90/10 revenue split to developers who choose to sign up for distribution via their online platform. This split would be in favor of the developers and would apply to all purchases made through the storefront.

The industry is no stranger to online storefronts, though some giants like Valve take a 70/30 approach to revenue generated by titles on Steam, as reported by Screen Rant. This split has been criticized in the past, and more recently the Epic Games Store has launched with an 88/12 split. The proportion being offered by My.Games is even more favorable to developers, though it requires them to sign up for and to use special "Developer Account" tools that the platform is pushing, according to a press release from the store.

Currently, My.Games applies a revenue split similar to Steam's. If developers want to take advantage of this new offer, they will have to use a specific, tracked link generated by My.Games to advertise their titles on various sites and through social media. Purchases of games as a result of that tracked advertising will be subject to the 90/10 revenue split.

Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics Launches Alongside A Demo For Easier Multiplayer

3 years 10 months ago

Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics is now available on Switch in many regions around the world, and it has launched with a surprise demo that not only lets players check out a few of the full game's offerings, but also lets you experience multiplayer across multiple screens as long as at least one player owns the full game.

The demo, which is called Pocket Edition in Japan and Local Multiplayer Guest Edition in Australia (at the time of writing it's not up on the US Eshop yet), will let you play 4 games from the collection for free.

The demo features four-in-a-row (think Connect 4), Dominos, President, and Slot Cars, all of which can be played with one or two players on a single console, with AI joining in if you don't have enough players. There are tutorials available for the four games included, and you can adjust rules, CPU difficulty, and the number of rounds you're playing on each game.

More players can join in locally if they also have the demo, and if you connect with someone who owns the full game you can play any of the Worldwide Classics together through it. President and Dominos both support up to four players across two systems.

SpongeBob Squarepants: Battle For Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated Features A New Multiplayer Horde Mode

For SpongeBob fans, one of the highlights of this mode will surely be playing as 7 different characters from the series--including Gary the snail. Each character will have their own unique attacks.

NHL 20 Flooded With Racist Team Names

3 years 10 months ago

NHL 20 players have been concerned about an influx of racist names in the in-game community, with complaints over the past month regarding EA's lack of reporting measures leaving plenty stumped.

Hockey has historically had a diversity problem, and this appears to be reflected in NHL 20. The month of May saw a number of posts on the official NHL 20 subreddit outlining concerns from the community around what has been dubbed as "rampant racism in online NHL". One Reddit post called NHL 20's community "one of the most racist" that a player had been a part of, citing examples of team names with overt racist references and racial slurs, especially against black people.

Additionally, a statement given by EA in April this year to the Vancouver Province contained a promise by the company to improve its filters used to detect discrimination within NHL 20. The Province also reported that the Vancouver Canucks hockey team had weighed in on the issue of racist language in the game, noting that it would "strongly condemn racist behavior in all forms, whether online in sport or society."

Xbox Store's Major Design Change Leaks, See It Here

It seems Microsoft is preparing yet another re-design for the Xbox dashboard. Specifically, the Xbox Store is apparently getting a major overhaul as part of a new firmware update in the future.

Codenamed "Project Mercury" according to Thurott, the re-design initially leaked via screenshots posted by @wincommunity on Twitter. The images and video showcase the app running on PC, but noted Microsoft insider Brad Sams says this is an update for Xbox, not Windows.

Sams got his hands on the new Xbox Store re-design, and you can check out the video below to see it in action. It looks sleek and easy to use, which is good considering the Xbox dashboard has historically been known to be somewhat unwieldy.

Destiny 2 Patch Notes Preview Includes Trials, Raid Reward Changes

3 years 10 months ago

The release of Destiny 2's Season 11 is imminent, with less than a week left of the current Season of the Worthy. With the new season will come a livestream presentation that'll address what's coming next for Destiny 2 in Season 11 and the game's upcoming fourth year, as well as a new update to the game to make some changes. Bungie gave a preview of that patch in a weekly blog post, and while most of what it mentions has already been announced, a few tidbits should be welcome to players.

The developer dropped the info in its latest This Week at Bungie blog post, providing a portion of the patch notes for Update 2.9.0. Most interestingly, Bungie is tweaking Trials of Osiris to deal with some issues it saw in the Season of the Worthy. Trials pits players in intense multiplayer battles where the goal is to get a "flawless" run of winning seven matches in a row. Bungie tweaks Trials to get harder over time, so the closer you are to going flawless, the more likely you are to run into other players who are also closing in on a flawless run. But in this past season, some players would repeatedly reset their Trials tracking cards so they would be put back to the beginning of a run, and therefore have the easiest matchmaking, so that they could earn Trials tokens after each match, which could be used to purchase the activity's armor and weapons.

Update. 2.9.0 changes trials so that tokens will only drop at the 3-, 5-, and 7-win milestones, instead of after each match. That should discourage players from repeatedly resetting their cards so they can go after easier teams and stockpile tokens, and give less-skilled teams more of room to compete.

Konami Wants To Publish More Western-Developed Games, Starting With Skelattack

3 years 10 months ago

Konami has recently expressed an interest in expanding its portfolio by publishing more games by Western developers. This new initiative began on June 3 with the release of Skelattack, an indie platformer developed by Californian studio Ukuza. However, Konami doesn't just want to publish western indie games--the studio has expressed interest in innovative games "regardless of size."

"I guess the reason we're talking about smaller titles is because the first title we announced is Skelattack, which is obviously an indie title," Konami senior European brand and business development manager Richard Jones told GamesIndustry.Biz. "I think one of the reasons we're looking to those types of smaller teams is just that there's so much creativity out there with those guys--you know, teams working on small but ambitious titles. Those guys are the ones daring to do innovative games, and I think that's something very exciting, which we wanted to support as a publisher."

Jones continued: "[But] I think the criteria we're looking for really is similar across all new IP regardless of size. Maybe some of those criteria become amplified with the smaller projects. I'm thinking specifically of people coming with fresh ideas, and teams that are pushing existing genres in new ways, or coming up with something genuinely unique. There's just so much going on in this flourishing indie scene at the moment that I think it's only natural that we're looking at small teams and small titles, as well as other titles."

Lupo acknowledged that while the event would not be going ahead with its in-person element this year, there was still plenty of fundraising to be carried out for the St. Jude Childen's Research Hospital as part of the replacement festivities that had been arranged.

Best Steam Game Deals Right Now: Dragon Age Inquisition, Resident Evil 3, And More

3 years 10 months ago

As the PlayStation Store and Xbox Store launch huge, E3-level sales this week, Steam is offering a nice batch of deals on its own. Notably, EA just released a handful of its games on Steam today, and many of them are on sale. You'll also find a big Resident Evil sale along with discounts on indie games from Chucklefish and more.

From now until July 9, EA is holding a publisher sale on Steam to celebrate many of its titles arriving on the platform. Right now, you can snag the fantastic choice-driven RPG Dragon Age Inquisition - Game of the Year Edition for $20, down from $40. Need for Speed Heat's Deluxe Edition is on sale for $28 instead of its usual $70, and Mirror's Edge Catalyst is discounted to $10 from $20.

The Resident Evil franchise is also seeing discounts across the board, including a Raccoon City Edition bundle that gets you the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 remakes for $60. That's a good deal outside of this sale, but considering the games are currently marked down to $20 and $39.59 separately, it doesn't really matter whether you buy them separately or together. You can also grab Resident Evil 7 for $9.89 and several of the older games for 5 bucks each.

Expect Valorant's Updates To Be Substantial, Deliberate Additions

3 years 10 months ago

Now that Valorant has been fully released, the biggest challenge for Riot Games will be keeping people playing for years. The team-based shooter may be the talk of the industry right now, but new content in the form of heroes, maps, and modes will need to come out continuously in order to sustain the game's player base.

GameSpot sat down with Riot Games' Anna Donlon during the Play for All stream to talk about their plans for how they'll approach Valorant post-launch content. "We're not ready to commit to the exact cadence," she said. "The main reason why we don't want to commit to the exact cadence is we kind of need to see how the game balances itself out as players are playing it."

Valorant left its closed beta phase last week, launching on PC on June 2. The version 1.0 release including some new content like the new Spike Rush mode.

The Sims 4 Patch Makes Sims Pee Fire Thanks To A Bug

3 years 10 months ago

The Sims 4 Eco Lifestyle expansion will be live in a few hours, but an update that's been rolled out to prepare players has had some unintended consequences. It appears that the latest Sims 4 patch is making Sims pee fire.

If it all sounds a bit dramatic, that's because it might well be. Sims 4 players have been reporting that using the bathroom after the latest patch has resulted in fires springing up in toilets. This is an uncommon sight even in the rather wacky universe of the Sims, and the official subreddit for the game has been afire with players commiserating with each other over this strange occurrence.

The common consensus appears to be that it is the result of the latest Sims 4 patch. As reported by Rock Paper Shotgun, there have been a number of other strange bugs popping up in the wake of this content update, including issues with crashes, save files not functioning as intended, and of course, this particular burning issue.

Fortnite Safe Houses Locations: Where To Eliminate Henchmen (Storm The Agency Challenge Guide)

3 years 10 months ago

Fortnite's 12.61 update has arrived, and it's brought one more set of challenges to complete before the upcoming Doomsday event closes out Season 2 and Season 3 of the game officially begins. The Storm the Agency challenges are now live, and one of the missions asks you to eliminate henchmen at different safe houses. If you're having trouble tracking them down, this guide will show you where the safe house are located and how to complete the challenge.

Where Are The Shadow Safe House Locations?

Shadow's safe houses have been a fixture of the map since Season 2 began, but they're tricky to find because of their inconspicuous appearance. The safe houses are all disguised to look like normal buildings from the outside, but there are some telltale signs that give them away. You'll know for sure when you stumble upon one as they're swarming with AI henchmen, so you'll need to be cautious when approaching them. We've marked down the safe house locations on the map below:

Fortnite's Storm the Agency challenges are now live alongside the game's 12.61 update, giving you a few more tasks to complete before the Doomsday event occurs and ushers in Season 3 of the battle royale shooter. One of the trickier challenges from the bunch asks you to open a faction locked chest at three different spy bases. If you're having trouble tracking those down, this guide will explain where the spy bases are and how to complete the challenge.

Where Are The Spy Base Locations?

Much like the safe houses you need to visit for a separate Storm the Agency challenge, spy bases have been a fixture of the map since the start of Season 2. These are a bit more overt than the safe houses, however; while those are disguised to look like regular buildings, the spy bases are all named locations, so they're much easier to track down. We've marked down where a few of the chests at these bases are located below:

Every Pokemon Sword / Shield Max Raid Event: Gigantamax Gengar, Charizard, And More

3 years 10 months ago

Pokemon Sword and Shield introduce a variety of new features to their series, but one of the most exciting is Max Raids. Much like in Pokemon Go, you can team up with three other trainers (either locally or online) and take on supersized Dynamax Pokemon together in cooperative battles.

The Pokemon you encounter in these Max Raids are special in a few different ways. First, there's a chance the monster will have its Hidden Ability. Regular wild Pokemon you come across in Sword and Shield will never have these, making Max Raids the only way to obtain Hidden Abilities in the games (outside of breeding, and in that case one of the parents would need to have the Hidden Ability in order to pass it down).

Depending on the level of the Raid, the Pokemon will have a couple of perfect IVs (base stats) as well, making them useful for breeding if you're trying to put together a competitive team. You'll also receive an assortment of rewards for clearing Max Raids, including Exp. Candy and TRs, which can otherwise only be purchased with Watts (and are quite costly). Finally, Max Raids are the only way to encounter Gigantamax Pokemon; unlike standard monsters, these Pokemon take on a different appearance when they Dynamax and all have a unique G-Max move.

If you haven't been keeping up, Sony's next-gen console is called PlayStation 5, or PS5 for short (surprising literally no one). Microsoft's Project Scarlett has been officially unveiled to be the Xbox Series X--check out our exclusive coverage of the new console in an interview with Xbox boss Phil Spencer, including insight into why it's named Series X.

In the following article, we dive into the differences and similarities between Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. We still don't have all the details (Sony has yet to officially reveal what its console looks like, for example), but we have enough to make some preliminary comparisons. Both Xbox Series X and PS5 are currently slated to release within the same window: the holiday season in 2020. So unless you're prepared to drop the cash for both, consider using this article to help you figure out which next-gen console is the one you want.

Best Nintendo Switch Deals May 2020: Where To Get A Switch Lite, Games, Accessories, And More

3 years 10 months ago

As 2020 rolls on, we're slowly getting an idea of what Nintendo has in store for the rest of the year. Its major first-party games for the year include Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Rescue Team DX, Bravely Default II, and Paper Mario: The Origami King. That's not as strong a lineup compared to previous years, and we still don't know much about when Bayonetta 3, Metroid Prime 4, and the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild might hit (we wouldn't count on any of them hitting this year). While we wait for Nintendo to announce more releases, it's a good time to catch up on Switch titles you might have missed the first time around, and maybe pick up your first (or second) Switch. To help you do that, we've rounded up the best Nintendo Switch deals you can find right now.

There are now two Switch consoles on the market: the original Nintendo Switch and the smaller, handheld-only Switch Lite. Normally sold for $300 and $200, respectively. Right now, however, you'll be hard-pressed to find a console at all, let alone for a discount. If you want to keep track of where to find a Nintendo Switch, we've got a round-up of major online retailer listings.

Take-Two Reportedly Poached Kerbal Space Program 2 Developers Away From Studio

3 years 10 months ago

Development of the sequel to Kerbal Space Program has continued at a Take-Two studio, after its previously contracted independent developers closed its doors earlier this year. But according to a Bloomberg report, most of its staff was poached by Take-Two in the months prior.

The report details the chaotic final few months within Star Theory Games, the now-defunct developer previously contracted to work on Kerbal Space Program 2 by Take-Two. The Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 publishers had purchased the rights to the franchise from its previous owners (another independent studio called Squad, who developed the acclaimed first game), before contracting Star Theory to work on it.

Development was reportedly going well until negotiations between Star Theory's founders and Take-Two over a potential studio purchase fell through. The day after, most of Star Theory's staff were contacted by Take-Two's publishing label, Private Division, with job offers at a new studio called Intercept Games. What made the offer puzzling to its recipients was the mention of the studio's current project, Kerbal Space Program 2--the very game they were thought to still be working on at Star Theory.

Pokemon Go June 2020 Field Research Tasks

3 years 10 months ago

June is officially here, and there's a lot happening in Pokemon Go this month. In addition to all the events Niantic has lined up for the game over the next few weeks, a new batch of Field Research tasks is now live, giving you a chance to earn a new Research Breakthrough reward.

Unlike Special Research questlines, which are assigned by Professor Willow, Field Research tasks are distributed via PokeStops. You'll receive a random task when you spin the Photo Disc. These can run the gamut from catching certain types of Pokemon to winning a Raid, and you'll earn various rewards for completing them, including berries, Poke Balls, and even Pokemon encounters.

The first Field Research task you complete each day will also net you a stamp. If you amass seven of these, you'll achieve a Research Breakthrough, which will unlock even more rewards, including a chance to catch a special Pokemon. This month's Research Breakthrough encounter is Trapinch, a Ground type and the first form of Flygon. You'll also earn bonus Trapinch Candy for capturing it.

Project Cars 3 Will Be "Much More Welcoming" To New Players

3 years 10 months ago

Following the official reveal of Project Cars 3, developer Slightly Mad Studios has confirmed that the upcoming racing simulator--due out this summer for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One--will be "much more welcoming" than previous entries in the series.

In an interview with IGN, Slightly Mad's Joe Barron (marketing and esports manager) and Pete Morrish (director of production) talked about some of the new changes made to Project Cars 3 to ensure that newcomers feel supported during their sessions. This includes things like rebuilding the Career campaign, tweaking the Custom and Multiplayer modes, implementing new car customization features, adding more racing locations like Havana and Shanghai, and much more. All of these improvements should help buyers feel more comfortable picking up Project Cars 3 over Project Cars 2.

"In that situation, when you've got somebody in a store--looking at the two copies and thinking which one to go for--kinda by definition they're not in the initial target market of Project Cars 2, which was very much towards racing fans and simulation heads and people that were fans of motorsport and so on," Morrish said. "So there are certain things that we've done in Project Cars 3 that make the new version the version that that particular person should go for, at the drop of a hat.

AMD Planning To Launch PS5, Xbox Series X GPUs For PC First

3 years 10 months ago

Both the upcoming Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 will be powered by the next-generation of AMD's graphics processing architecture, RDNA 2. But before both consoles launch during the holiday season, AMD might be launching its new graphics cards to PC gamers.

In a recent Bank of America Global Technology Conference webcast (via RockPaperShotgun), AMD CFO Devinder Kumar confirmed that the company plans to launch its new range of RDNA 2 GPUs and Ryzen 3 CPUs in late 2020, but that the GPUs would launch before they appear in Microsoft and Sony's new consoles. Although no specific window was mentioned, an Autumn release to coincide with Nvidia's suspected launch of its Ampere-powered RTX 3000 cards is suspected.

Kumar mentioned that "enthusiasts love to buy the best, and we are certainly working on giving them the best," later stating that the new RDNA 2 GPUs will be the first products with the architecture available to consumers. This is expected to fill a gap left open by AMD currently, with Nvidia's RTX 2080 and 2080Ti going largely unchallenged by its only rival.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla Pre-Order Guide: Get It For $10 Off At Amazon And Walmart (PS4, Xbox One)

3 years 10 months ago

Ubisoft finally unveiled the next mainline entry in the Assassin's Creed franchise. Dubbed Assassin's Creed Valhalla, the new open-world adventure will transport players to the Viking Age. In addition to releasing on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, Valhalla will be available on both next-gen consoles: PS5 and Xbox Series X. This means Valhalla will be playable on a whopping six platforms (including Stadia). As an Assassin's Creed game, you can bet Valhalla has multiple special editions to choose from when pre-ordering. All four editions are available to pre-order now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and you can currently get a nice discount at Amazon and Walmart. Because Assassin's Creed Valhalla supports Xbox Smart Delivery, you're basically getting your first next-gen game at a discount if you buy on Xbox One.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla is set in the ninth century in a period of turmoil for the Vikings. You play as Eivor, a Viking raider who leads their clan away from the war-torn homeland of Norway on an adventure to England. Eivor can be played as male or female, and Ubisoft promises its combat will take cues from Viking fighting styles, with a reworked combat system that includes dual-wielding and more enemy variety. Like recent iterations of the franchise, Valhalla will have a season pass that grants access to post-launch DLC.

Borderlands 3 Guns, Love, And Tentacles DLC Doesn't Address Issues With Lovecraft's Work

3 years 10 months ago

This article, originally posted on March 29, 2020, has been republished to amplify black voices in GameSpot's support of Black Lives Matter. Donate to the effort to fight systemic racism here.

With the release of Guns, Love, and Tentacles: The Marriage of Wainwright & Hammerlock, the second story-focused DLC for Borderlands 3, I figured that now would be the best time to jump back into Gearbox's latest entry in its first-person loot shooter franchise, seeing as I hadn't found an opportunity to do so since writing GameSpot's Borderlands 3 review. The Borderlands franchise has typically had a decent track record when it comes to post-launch campaign expansions after all--so I figured, "Why not?"

However, I wasn't particularly enthused by my time with Guns, Love, and Tentacles, largely because Gearbox's interpretation of H.P. Lovecraft's work incorporates some of the problematic parts of the author's worldview and then does nothing to address them.

PUBG Is Free To Play On Steam This Weekend

3 years 10 months ago

If you've ever wanted to try the game that jumpstarted the battle royale craze, then you have your chance now. Playerunknown's Battlegrounds is free to play on Steam from now until Sunday, June 8, at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET, and if you want to continue playing PUBG after the weekend, then you can buy it at a pretty great discount. PUBG is $15, down from $30, until June 8. Unfortunately, it's unclear when exactly the deal ends that day, so you should pick it up as soon as you know you want to keep playing.

All you need to do to play PUBG for free this weekend is mosey on over to its Steam page and then click the "Play Game" button. Once it finishes installing on your PC, you're good to go. No microtransactions or other purchases will be available until the game is purchased, but otherwise, you'll have access to everything PUBG offers, gameplay-wise. PUBG is also available on PS4 and Xbox One, but neither platform is hosting a free weekend.

One of the modes players will be able to test out is the newly added Ranked Mode. Developer PUBG Corp says this mode "provides an additional challenge for experienced players, allowing them to climb the ranks and see where they stand among other players." The mode aims to offer a way to measure players' skill levels as well as provide a suitable environment for players who want to take the game more seriously.
