Here's How To Find Pascal In Animal Crossing: New Horizons

3 years 10 months ago

Pascal isn't a newcomer to the Animal Crossing series, but he did make his first appearance in Animal Crossing: New Horizons after wave one of its summer update went live this week. The red sea otter loves scallops and will trade you DIY recipes in exchange for them. He can also gift you pearls, a rare crafting item requires for certain recipes, including the new mermaid set.

How To Find Pascal On Your Island

You can find Pascal while swimming and diving in your island's oceans. If you don't know how to do either yet, check out our Animal Crossing swimming guide for instructions on where to get a wet suit and how to swim.

He waits...

Once you're in the water and start diving for sea creatures, Pascal will eventually appear, but only when you find a scallop. He won't appear every time you catch a scallop or even the first time--it's random, and we're not quite sure what the rate is, but it seems to only be once a day. It does seem like he can appear on your island alongside other special visitors, however. Leif was in my island's town square on the same day I met Pascal.

Check On Your Black Gamer Friends

3 years 10 months ago

For many of us, playing video games is a much-needed break from all the trials and responsibilities of everyday life. When COVID-19 forced the globe into quarantine, gamers shared how playing games like Animal Crossing was an important part of both having fun and maintaining mental health while in isolation.

Despite elements of randomness that are pervasive in many games, video games often feel like a level playing field. Unlike life away from our controllers, the rules of video games are explained, the parameters and limitations made clear. Whether it is Mario jumping over pipes or fighting a boss in Final Fantasy, the avatar is an extension of you. Getting your Pokémon to Level 99 is a reflection of the time and effort (and money) you invest in the game. Though scholars like Christopher Paul warn us about the toxicity that can arise from seeing video games as pure meritocracies, it isn't inherently wrong to see video games as one of the few places where (to the greatest extent possible) you get out exactly what you put in. Everything that happens is a function of your input, no matter what demographic you come from.

New Sea Creatures Guide -- Animal Crossing: New Horizons

3 years 10 months ago

The biggest addition to part one of Animal Crossing: New Horizons' summer update is the ability to swim and dive in the ocean around your island, which means new creatures to catch. In fact, wave one of the summer update added an entirely new category in your Critterpedia, titled "Sea Creatures," and Blathers is accepting donations of new finds at the museum as well. There are 40 total new sea creatures to catch.

Here we'll go over every new type of sea creature you can find while diving. If you don't know how to dive yet, check out our guide on how to swim in Animal Crossing for info on where to get a wet suit and how to get into the water for the first time.

How To Find Sea Creatures In Animal Crossing

Sea creatures can only be found while diving underwater in the ocean. You'll know you're near one when you see a column of bubbles floating to the surface, or when you're already underwater and spot a dark shadow beneath the waves. Just dive under and swim over to the shadow to automatically collect the creature. Sometimes the shadow might be moving, so you will have to follow or chase it.

Here's How To Swim In Animal Crossing: New Horizons

3 years 10 months ago

Animal Crossing: New Horizons just launched wave one of its summer update, which means you can now swim and dive in the ocean around your island. But you can't just dive right in without preparing. In this guide, we'll explain where to get a wet suit, how to swim and dive, and what to do with sea creatures and other rare finds. It adds a whole new layer to Nintendo's game, so you won't want to miss out. As a bonus, there are plenty of extra puns, too!

How To Get A Wet Suit

  • Requires: 3,000 bells

You can't swim in Animal Crossing: New Horizons without a wet suit. To buy a wet suit, head over to Nook's Cranny. The wet suit will be available to purchase in the cabinet where you usually buy tools, seeds, and wallpaper/flooring.

The wet suit costs 3,000 bells. You can also purchase a wet suit from your Nook Stop terminal for 3,000 bells. They come in new designs daily, so you can keep checking back if you don't like what you end up with. Your Nook Stop also offers a Nook Inc. wet suit for 800 miles.

Drake Hollow, The Next Game From The Flame In The Flood Devs, Has Been Delayed

3 years 10 months ago

Drake Hollow, the next game from The Flame in the Flood developer The Molasses Flood, has been delayed indefinitely just a few days before its previous July release date.

A short message from studio director Forrest Dowling explains that the delay is down to technical issues that can't be delved into due to NDA restrictions. "Unfortunately, due to the nature of the delay we don't have a new date yet, but will let everyone know as soon as we do," Dowling concluded.

Drake Hollow is a cooperative mix between survival and wave-based defense mechanics. You and three friends can build settlements and raise drakes--sentient plants that you'll need to feed, shelter, and, most importantly, keep entertained. The drakes will help you defend your base by manning weapons you build or suppling energy to automated defenses with treadmills. But if you don't hold their interest, they literally die.

Nier Creator Yoko Taro Has Stubborn Demands, And A New RPG Called SinoAlice

3 years 10 months ago

"You're designing Final Fantasy XIV raids and remaking the original Nier now. What's changed for you since Nier: Automata?" That's a question I sent over to Yoko Taro via email through a PR rep and translator, hoping to get some insight on how his career has evolved since directing one of 2017's best games. And provide insight he did.

"I've always been stubborn, but once Automata became a hit, everyone began to say yes to my stubborn demands. Everyone may think that I became arrogant because I made a hit and got carried away--I'm upset because I've always been arrogant!"

For those unfamiliar, Yoko Taro kind of doesn't give a damn about professional norms in how he presents himself. You'll never catch him in the public eye without his Emil helmet on and you'll recognize his wild but inoffensive eccentricity as distinct from pretty much any other developer in the industry. In many ways, it's an attitude that's spilled into games he's worked on, typically designed with unconventional storytelling, melodrama, and sometimes crude irreverence. And if you're hyped up for the next thing from the creator of the Nier and Drakengard series, well, it actually just launched this week in the West.

Call Of Duty: Warzone Gets Patriotic Flyovers For July 4

3 years 10 months ago

Call of Duty: Warzone has gotten a new update with some patriotic flair for Independence Day. While you're waiting on the Warzone lobby, you can watch the skies for a jet flyover with colored smoke trails like you'd see in an air show.

The fansite CharlieIntel tweeted a look at the jet flyover with red and white stripes. The sky is also littered with fireworks which may be difficult to find this year in real life due to events being canceled in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

Call of Duty stories often focus on the American military, in part as a coalition with militaries from allies like the UK. Activision has also closely tied the series with American military veterans with moves like its Call of Duty Endowment, a non-profit that helps veterans find civilian jobs after ending their service.

The Internet Declares War On The U.S. Army Esports Discord Channel

3 years 10 months ago

The military has long had a foot in gaming, most notably as a recruitment tool with efforts like the early 2000s' America's Army series. The army's gaming arm came back into the public eye this week, after the U.S. Army's esports account tweeted "UwU" in response to a tweet by chat app Discord.

The tweet went viral, with many criticizing the army's use of the esports initiative as a recruitment tool to target young people. Naturally, hilarity ensued. The team was not in on the joke.

Soon, a new speedrun challenge spawned on Twitter where users competed to get banned from the US Army esports Discord server the fastest, Polygon reported. The server was flooded with users posting in an effort to try and get banned--while some posted classic "copypasta" text, others simply linked to the Wikipedia page for "United States war crimes."

Fortnite Dataminers Claim To Have Leaked New Ruins Area

3 years 10 months ago

It's not unusual for Fortnite's battle royale map to change and evolve throughout a season, but the end of Chapter 2, Season 3's water-themed event may see the map go through bigger changes than usual. As reported by Polygon, dataminers claim to have identified a new area filled with ruins that will be revealed as the water recedes. As of right now, we cannot see any of it, with the game's recent The Device event flooding a huge portion of the map. This came in preparation for Aquaman's challenges.

A map posted on Reddit shows the potential upcoming state of the map according to datamined images, with a new location in the top left corner of the map called "The Ruins." Some have speculated that this area may have something to do with Aquaman, as the DC hero was introduced in the new Battle Pass. Our guide to all the currently available Aquaman challenges can be found here.

Posts from Roblox players on social media show a number of accounts where avatars have been changed to wear a shirt with an American flag and eagle, along with a red cap with white lettering that resembles Trump's signature Make America Great Again, or MAGA hat. Layers Of Fear Devs Explain Why Their Next Game Is Skipping Current-Gen For Xbox Series X

3 years 10 months ago

Whereas many of the games releasing at the end of 2020 will come to current- and next-generation consoles, Bloober Team's The Medium is skipping the older systems and only coming to Xbox Series X and PC.

Jacek Zięba, a producer at Bloober Team, said in a new interview with Xbox that bypassing the current-generation consoles is in the best interest of The Medium. "We don't have any porting plans for current-gen consoles, so the Xbox Series X will offer the experience we always meant for the game," he said.

Zięba said Bloober could have released The Medium on Xbox One, but this would have come at a cost. "Of course, theoretically, you could rescope any game idea, but in our case it would mean completely changing the core game features," he said. "Thanks to the power of Xbox Series X, we can develop the game the way we have always envisioned it."

UK Government Committee Calls For Loot Boxes To Be Immediately Reclassified As Gambling

3 years 10 months ago

Less than a month after the UK government launched a call for evidence into loot boxes to decide whether they should be further regulated, a House of Lords Select Committee on gambling has called for loot boxes to be immediately re-classified as gambling, GamesIndustry.biz has reported.

The original inquiry into loot boxes led the government to establish an open call for evidence, with the results to be considered alongside the review of the UK's Gambling Act 2005. Now the latter report is in, and it condemns loot boxes in no uncertain terms.

"The liberalization of gambling by the Gambling Act 2005, the universal adoption of smart phones, and the exploitation of soft-touch regulation by gambling operators has created a perfect storm of addictive 24/7 gambling," the Lords report reads.

Recompile, A 3D Metroidvania With Hacking Mechanics, Is Coming To PS5 And Xbox Series X

3 years 10 months ago

Recompile, a 3D Metroidvania game with a unique sense of style, is the latest title to be confirmed for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. The game is not coming to PS4 or Xbox One, which makes it a rare next-gen exclusive indie title.

Players will control, according to the press release, "a rogue piece of semi-sentient code, trapped in The Mainframe--a sprawling digital wasteland dead-set on deleting trespassers."

Publisher Dear Villagers also released a new trailer to celebrate the announcement and show off how the game will look on next-gen systems, below. It features the Aoife O'Donovan song Jupiter.

Beyond A Steel Sky Releasing On PC This Month After A 26-Year Wait

3 years 10 months ago

Beyond A Steel Sky, which recently released on Apple Arcade, is finally nearly here for PC fans. The sequel to Revolution's incredible 1994 point-and-click adventure game Beneath A Steel Sky releases for Steam on July 16.

The game returns players to the world of the original game, and once again has you playing as Robert Foster. Like the original, it features art from Watchmen artist Dave Gibbons, and it's set in a post-apocalyptic cyberpunk Australian city. The game is a direct sequel, with many Easter eggs for returning fans.

The Apple Arcade version features gorgeous visuals and relatively intuitive controls, but many longtime series fans are no doubt excited to play the game on PC.

The game is yet again developed by Revolution Software, best known for the Broken Sword series. A sequel to Beneath A Steel Sky was initially promised as a stretch goal in the Kickstarter for Broken Sword 5, and although the game's pledges did not reach the goal, Revolution decided to make the game anyway.

GameSpot will have a review of Beyond A Steel Sky live closer to the game's PC release.

Madden NFL 21's Closed Beta Begins Tonight, Here's How To (Maybe) Get A Code

3 years 10 months ago

The Madden NFL 21 closed beta is about to begin. EA Sports has confirmed that the beta test runs this 4th of July holiday weekend--from July 2 at 8:30 PM ET through Sunday, July 5 at 11:59 PM ET.

This beta will be double the audience size of the Madden NFL 20 beta last year, EA said in a blog post. To get in, you needed to have signed up for the Good Morning Madden link in June. Additionally, almost everyone who earned points from the Madden Championship Series will get a code sent to their email. On top of that, if you finished in the top 10,000 players in Madden NFL 20's Ultimate Team and Franchise modes, based on play time, you will receive an invitation.

If you don't fit any of those criteria, you can follow Madden NFL 21's social media accounts and watch for a giveaway there. Additionally, the game's developers, along with influencers, creators, athletes, and NFL teams, will give away codes. Note that the beta is only available in the US and Canada. EA did not announce a list of platforms for the Madden NFL 21 beta, but the game is confirmed to release on PS4, Xbox One, and PC in August before coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X later in the year.

No, Halo MCC Is Not Adding Microtransactions

3 years 10 months ago

343 Industries recently published a blog post that stated a new update for Halo: The Master Chief Collection would allow players to "purchase" items in the game's battle pass-style progression system. The line has since been removed, and now the studio has re-affirmed that The Master Chief Collection is not adding microtransactions.

"There was one line in the interview where we were talking about using the season points to purchase unlocks. The word purchase was misunderstood to mean money," 343's Tyler Davis said on Twitter. "We updated the wording to remove the word 'purchase' to 'unlock' in the blog."

The Master Chief Collection is a rare example of a big game that does not feature any microtransactions. Halo 5: Guardians features microtransactions with the Req system, and Halo Infinite is expected to feature the business practice as well.

Call Of Duty: Warzone Season 5 Rumored To Make Significant Map Changes

3 years 10 months ago

Call of Duty: Warzone's Season 5 update releases in August, and it's is rumored to make significant map changes to make it more in-line with this year's Call of Duty. Originally reported by Video Games Chronicle, the revamps will include an open interior of the football stadium and the addition of a loot-filled train that circles the map, according to people involved with its development.

The rumored Cold War-themed Call of Duty has already been teased in the battle royale for over a month, with a number of hints found by players related to the mysterious Warzone bunkers, including a spy plane found by glitching through walls. Other secrets that have been found include a war room, number countdown, and nuclear warhead, which is rumored to be used to trigger a map revamp, similar to Fortnite's black hole transition to Chapter 2.

The new Call of Duty will reportedly have its own campaign, multiplayer, and Zombies modes but will also incorporate Warzone in a similar fashion to Modern Warfare. Warzone will continue to use Modern Warfare's engine, with Raven Software--which also worked on Black Ops 4's Blackout mode--leading development, according to sources.

Ubisoft's co-founder and CEO, Yves Guillemot, has detailed a series of steps he intends to implement at the company to combat problems of discrimination and mistreatment. This includes restructuring the editorial department, improving human resources processes, and ensuring all managers are held accountable on these subjects.

In a lengthy blog post, Guillemot said fundamental changes need to occur at all levels of Ubisoft. "We must do everything we can to ensure no one is in these situations ever again."

The first of these changes is the appointment of a "Head of Workplace Culture." While this bundle doesn't actually feature every Valve game, it boasts most of the company's catalogue, from Half-Life and Team Fortress Classic to Left 4 Dead 2 and Portal 2--Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Dota 2 are included on the bundle page, but both of those games are already free-to-play.

The Valve Complete bundle currently costs $13.14, down from its full regular price of $145.82. Even better, the bundle gets even cheaper if you already own some of the games. As someone who already owns most of these games, my price drops to below $5 for the last six games I need to complete Valve's library.

Apex Legends Dev Explains Issue With Loba's Teleport

3 years 10 months ago

An Apex Legends developer gave a thorough explanation of what's causing an issue with Loba's tactical on the World's End map with the Lost Treasures' patch. Loba's tactical ability is a teleport that lets her throw her bracelet and travel to it once it lands.

Jason McCord, design director at Respawn, explained in a series of tweets why Loba's ability is failing more frequently on World's End than it should be. The game has triggers around cliffs on both maps to stop players from staying up there, which is why an out-of-bounds warning occurs when you land up there. Loba's bracelet is designed to fail when thrown into these zones to stop her from going up there.

The issue on World's End stems from a slight difference in coding from Kings Canyon, with the triggers being grouped more on World's End than on Kings Canyon. McCord explained that Loba's tactical is failing when passing through the grouped triggers instead of only when landing in them.

3 years 10 months ago

A Plague Tale: Innocence has been a major success for developer Asobo Studio, critically and commercially, and has now racked up a huge sales number. The game's official Twitter account has now announced that the game has sold over 1 million copies since it released in May 2019.

The game, an action-adventure that involves dodging rats and being stealthy, was one of GameSpot's best games of 2019.

In the tweet, A Plague Tale's developers thank the game's community of players, stating that "this wouldn't have been possible without our community and we'd like to thank every one of you for supporting the game."

The game is also available through Xbox Game Pass--which, believe it or not, can actually lead to increased sales.

Death Stranding On PC Can Achieve 100+ FPS Thanks To DLSS 2.0

3 years 10 months ago

Death Stranding is releasing for PC on July 14, giving PC players a chance to experience Hideo Kojima's strange opus. We've already seen the minimum and recommended specs for the game, but now publisher 505 Games has revealed some more details about what to expect if you load the game up on a powerful rig.

Death Stranding on PC will feature Nvidia DLSS 2.0 technology, as long as you have a GeForce RTX GPU installed. This means that the game can run with a frame rate over 100fps at 1440p, or at over 60fps with a 4K image.

The press release sent to GameSpot includes a quote from Kojima Productions' Akio Sakamoto, praising the game's PC release with NVIDIA tech. "The extra performance Nvidia DLSS 2.0 delivers in Death Stranding allows gamers to unlock the vast graphical potential of the PC platform by increasing the graphics settings and resolution, delivering on the vision we have for the game," Sakamoto says.

Halo TV Show: 343's Kiki Wolfkill Shares The Latest News

3 years 10 months ago

In addition to Halo Infinite and Halo: The Master Chief Collection, the team at 343 Industries is working on a Halo TV show with Showtime and starring Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief. The production was shut down in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and it's unclear when it may start back up again. While we wait for that, Halo's transmedia boss Kiki Wolfkill has shared some new insight on the show and what it's trying to do

Appearing on Star Wars writer Gary Whitta's Animal Talking show, Wolfkill said it has been a "mind-bending challenge" to translate the video game series to TV.

Instead of directly adapting a previous Halo game or book, the TV show is seemingly going to tell an entirely new story. Wolfkill's team has been working with Showtime--which is GameSpot's sister company--on finding the best way to retain the essence of Halo and bring it to a new medium. This has been hard work, both on this Halo TV show and in the past. Fans will no doubt recall how Peter Jackson's Halo movie famously fell apart.
