Destiny 2 Gets Moments Of Triumph, New Exotic Quest On Bungie Day

3 years 10 months ago

Destiny 2's Moments of Triumph are here for the Year Three, giving players a new way to show off their dedication to destroying aliens and taking on other Guardians across the solar system. The yearly pile of Triumphs sends players out to conquer a little piece of all that Destiny 2 has to offer, and this year, it's pushing players to complete the five raid activities that will be disappearing with the release of the Beyond Light expansion.

July 7, or 7/7, is considered "Bungie Day" among fans of the developer thanks to Bungie's proclivity for the number 7. To celebrate, a whole bunch of new things are now available in Destiny 2. In addition to the Moments of Triumph goals and rewards, there's also a new Exotic quest, Growth, that will unlock the new Ruinous Effigy trace rifle. There's also new story content pushing players to help prep the evacuation of Titan, Io, Mercury, and Mars before the Darkness takes them.

The Moments of Triumph are probably what will keep players busiest, though. The activity presents players with a new Triumph Seal they can earn, provided they're willing to play a whole bunch of the game. It also dishes out additional rewards, though--including a new Sparrow, new emblems, and a new Ghost shell. And if you complete enough Triumphs, you'll also unlock special, real-world merchandise in the Bungie store. You still have to purchase it, of course, but only players who earn the right to do so will have access.

Xbox Tells Devs Not To Offer Series X Versions As Paid DLC - Report

3 years 10 months ago

Microsoft has reportedly warned Xbox Series X developers against charging for DLC upgrades from the current generation to the next one. The move appears aimed at disincentivizing publishers from charging for a service that Microsoft is trying to make a major pillar of its platform with Smart Delivery.

VGC reports that the company is encouraging publishers to instead adopt a no-cost upgrade model, like either Smart Delivery or EA's Dual Entitlement. The report doesn't state definitively whether Microsoft has made a formal rule the practice of charging for upgrades on its platform.

Despite that, the company is said to be leaving the door open to other mechanisms of allowing upgrades. Aside from free digital upgrades like the ones above, it hasn't ruled out schemes like selling a next-gen version at a discount, or selling "cross-gen bundles" that include two versions of the game. We've already seen that in action this week with the announcement of NBA 2K21's Kobe Bryant edition, which will sell both versions for $100. The regular edition on both platforms will cost $60 on current-gen and $70 on next-gen--which may become the new normal.

New Apex Legends Update Fixes Loba Bug, Permanently Adds Mobile Respawn Beacons

3 years 10 months ago

With the conclusion of the Apex Legends Lost Treasures limited-time event, Respawn has released a new update for the battle royale game. Loba fans, rejoice! The update finally fixes the annoying problem with her tactical ability on World's Edge.

For those who don't main Loba, she's had an issue with her tactical ability, Burglar's Best Friend, on World's Edge since the start of Lost Treasures. Loba's tactical ability cancels out if you throw it out-of-bounds or off a ledge--which is helpful, as it prevents you from teleporting to your death. However, on World's Edge, a bug was causing Loba's tactical ability to detect normal areas as out-of-bounds, cancelling out Burglar's Best Friend in places where it shouldn't.

So as you venture through this season's activities, you'll be learning about and visiting those spots. A new Exotic quest in the game this week, dubbed "Growth," has you visiting those locations and uncovering their secrets.

Paragon, Killed By Fortnite, Lives On

3 years 10 months ago

Epic Games' free-to-play MOBA Paragon never quite found the stability it needed to become successful, shutting its doors in early 2018 after being live for less than two years. Meanwhile, another Epic title, Fortnite, was flourishing--and its huge success ultimately meant that the company had little reason to keep Paragon alive. Shortly after the game shut down, Epic announced it would be releasing millions of dollars worth of Paragon assets to Unreal Engine 4 developers, and now that generosity is coming to fruition.

At least four new MOBAs are now being developed with Paragon's official assets, PC Gamer has reported. The games include OverPrime, CORE, Predecessor and Fault, with many of them nearing a soft launch in beta or alpha phases.

Despite the overall decline of the MOBA genre, each of the new games is looking to bring something different into the mix--even while using the same game's assets. You can see what the different games have done with the same asset sets in the trailers below.

Watch Blink 182's Mark Hoppus Cover "Dammit" In The Last Of Us 2

3 years 10 months ago

Naughty Dog's The Last of Us Part II features a neat, and fairly sophisticated, mini-game of sorts that lets you play music on an acoustic guitar. Numerous different chords and strumming patterns are possible, and this has led to some wonderful videos of covers of famous songs popping up online.

Now, Blink 182's own Mark Hoppus has gotten involved. During a recent Twitch livestream on his account, Hoppus covered his own song, "Dammit," using the Last of Us 2's in-game guitar. It's a four-chord song, so it translates quite well in the game as an acoustic version of one of the band's most famous tunes. It's a delight to watch Hoppus in this video, even if he forgets the words at one point.

You can buy a replica of the guitar from The Last of Us 2, but at $2,300 it's not cheap. Sony partnered with guitar company Taylor for the custom acoustic guitar based on Ellie's guitar from the game.

Bungie Vet Says Destiny Deal With Activision Was "Bad From The Start"; Microsoft Almost Signed The Game

3 years 10 months ago

Video game industry veteran Martin O'Donnell, who composed the music for Halo and was on Bungie's board of directors, has spoken very openly about the deal Bungie made with Activision and how it all fell apart. The long and short of it is that O'Donnell had a bad feeling about the deal for the Destiny series from the very beginning, but the whole story is like something out of a movie.

Speaking to YouTuber HiddenXperia, O'Donnell first clarified that it was Bungie's seven members of the board of directors that collectively made the decision to work with Activision. O'Donnell was a member, so he acknowledged his part in the decision. O'Donnell also continues to hold stock in Bungie.

Discussing the origins of the deal, O'Donnell said he has misgivings right away. "We knew it was a risk right from the get-go," he said. "It turned out to be exactly as bad as we thought it was going to be. Everybody who no longer works for Bungie is going to say, 'Yeah, it was bad from the start.'"

Call Of Duty Mobile Adds A Fan-Favorite Modern Warfare 2 Map This Week

3 years 10 months ago

Activision has announced what's coming to Call of Duty: Mobile this week, and it includes a classic map, a new charity DLC offering, and more.

First, the map Highrise is headed to the mobile game this week. If that name sounds familiar, it's because Highrise was originally featured in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The map is set on top of a skyscraper, and you need to watch where you walk, as you can fall to your death.

The fan-favorite Highrise map is headed to CoD: Mobile

Also new in Call of Duty: Mobile this week is the latest Call of Duty Endowment pack. The "Freedom Pack," as it's called, comes with a series of red, white, and blue items, including a parachute and wingsuit. It also includes a blueprint for the M16 weapon with a red, white, and blue color scheme. Stardew Valley Update 1.5 Update Will Add New End-Game Content

3 years 10 months ago

Stardew Valley's 1.5 update will add a "significant new piece of end-game content" plus other new additions as well. In a tweet, developer Eric Barone, also known as ConcernedApe, teased the update that was previously announced when the 1.4 update was released. The tease shows Willy's shack with a new back door, that wasn't previously there.

Where the door leads and if it's connected to the end-game content is unknown, but Barone said he has hit some good milestones on the update, but no release window has been given. Like previous updates, the new content will be free for all players. Update 1.5 might also include bananas, which will be added as a new growable fruit after winning a Twitter poll.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Gullivarrr Guide And All Pirate Items

3 years 10 months ago

Part one of Animal Crossing: New Horizons' summer update has arrived, and it's brought a brand-new special visitor: Gullivarrr! Although it's just Gulliver doing pirate cosplay, he offers a different set of prizes than when he visits as regular Gulliver--and while Gullivarrr also requires your help getting back to his (pirate) ship, helping him works differently, too. It's less confusing than it sounds!

Gullivarrr is a separate visitor from Gulliver, and according to dataminer Ninji, you can get both of them in the same week--just not on consecutive days. Gullivarrr's appearance is random, but you do need to have purchased a wet suit (from Nook's Cranny or via Nook Shopping) before he'll visit.

Drink good soda responsibly, I guess.

When And Where Does Gullivarrr Show Up?

Gullivarrr is one of the random visitors in New Horizons, which means he can show up on any given weekday. You can see our Animal Crossing special visitors guide for more details about visiting NPCs and their prerequisites.

Microsoft Interested In Buying Batman, Mortal Kombat Dev WB Games - Report

3 years 10 months ago

Last month, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment's (WB Games) parent company, AT&T, announced intentions to sell off WarnerMedia's gaming division. A new report suggests that Microsoft has expressed interest in purchasing WB Games, though a sale has yet to be confirmed.

According to business news publication The Information, "two people familiar with the situation" said Microsoft might be looking to scoop up WB Games, the studio responsible for publishing games like Batman: Arkham Knight, Middle-earth: Shadow of War, Mortal Kombat 11, and others. A sale isn't imminent, according to the people, as AT&T is still weighing how to handle its $154 billion in debt. This debt comes from the 2018 acquisition of Time Warner, now known as WarnerMedia, which includes companies like Crunchyroll, DC Comics, HBO, WB Games, and a host of other subsidies.

Microsoft isn't the only company that finds buying WB Games an enticing proposition; Activision Blizzard, Electronic Arts, and Take-Two Interactive have also seemingly expressed their interest in the company. Though it's unclear how serious AT&T is about selling WB Games, the sale could fetch a hefty $4 billion price tag.

Captain Marvel's Brie Larson Has An Unexpected Favorite Super Mario Game

3 years 10 months ago

It's no secret that Captain Marvel actress Brie Larson loves Nintendo, and her Nintendo Switch. But if you had to ask her which of the many Mario games are her favorite, the answer might surprise you.

As a guest on First We Feast's Hot Ones, Larson was asked about the time she proclaimed Super Mario 3D World was "one of the greatest achievements in Nintendo history." Larson laughed before breaking down the sense of wonder the Wii U platformer gave her.

"Man, that game blew my mind when it came out because I had such a deep love for it in its two-dimensional form," Larson explained. "I would've said that same quote when Paper Mario came out...I love illusions, I love optical illusions, I love magic. Games that use that, that use the idea that there's other worlds, other ways of looking at the world--which I think Paper Mario and Mario 3D World did--yeah. Nintendo continues to top itself."

Team Fortress 2 Classic Mod Is Available In Full Now

3 years 10 months ago

If you often find yourself yearning for a simpler era of online multiplayer games, before Overwatch, or Fortnite, or any kind of battle royale, Team Fortress 2 Classic may be for you. As picked up by VG24/7, the Death and Taxes update on the classic mod is now live, marking TF2 Classic's official release.

Although Valve still supports and occasionally updates Team Fortress 2 over a decade after it was originally released, many players feel the live game doesn't reflect the version they played in its heyday in the years after release.

"Team Fortress 2 Classic is a re-imagining of the 2008-2009 era of the original Team Fortress 2, [which we] consider the "Classic Era", featuring old features that were scrapped and worked upon, or new content such as new weapons and gamemodes," the mod's website explains. Despite being a huge undertaking, the TF2 Classic mod is entirely fan-made by team Eminoma.

Doom Eternal Devs Promise A Switch Release Date Soon And A Polished Port

3 years 10 months ago

Doom Eternal launched earlier this year on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia, but the promised Switch port has not yet come out. Considering the quality of the first game's Switch port, expectations are high for the sequel, but a release date still hasn't been announced. According to the game's producers, that's set to change soon.

In an interview with Gamereactor, picked up on by Nintendo Everything, Id Software's Marty Stratton and Hugo Martin have promised that more news on the port, which is being handled by Switch port specialists Panic Button, will be revealed before too long. "We’ll be talking about the release date pretty soon," Stratton said. "We haven’t announced that yet – I can’t do that now. It’s really made great progress."

Stratton, who calls the other console versions of the game a "feather in the cap" of Id Software's tech team, believes that the Switch version will be similarly impressive on Nintendo's scaled-down hardware. "I think it’ll be every bit as good as Doom 2016 was, and I’m super excited for people to get it," he says.

Call Of Duty League Championship Will Be Held Online

Activision has announced that the upcoming Call of Duty League post-season schedule--including the Championship--will be held as a virtual tournament, not an in-person LAN event as has been the case in the past. The announcement is not a big surprise, as the regular season took place online due to the COVID-19 crisis. With the pandemic still gripping the USA and other parts of the world, this year's event has moved to an online-only setup.

"Due to continuing health risks associated with COVID-19 and our collective priority focus on protecting the safety of our teams, players, league staff, and partner personnel, the remainder of the season will be held online," Activision said in a news release. "This decision was made with great care, communication, and consideration over the course of many discussions."

To support this change, the League is giving all competitors a "universal camera setup" that will be switched on for the entirety of matches. This will give League officials the ability to ensure players are not keeping things above the line. "The cameras will provide visibility for league officials to view and check each competitor's console, controller, and monitor as needed," Activision said. "Once a match reaches an official ready check status, players will need to be seated and on camera."

Mortal Shell Beta Is Live For Everyone On Epic Games Store

3 years 10 months ago

Souls-like action game Mortal Shell was designed to punish players with its deliberate and challenging combat, and if you can't wait to play the full game, you can try out a slice with the beta on Epic Games Store right now. If you're skilled, you can get through it in an hour, but Cold Symmetry and publisher Playstack warn that it can take much longer for everyone else.

The big hook in Mortal Shell are the titular shells, which are bodies you can possess in order to gain their powers and arsenal. The beta contains two shells called Harros and Tiel, giving you a chance to shake up the combat to best serve your situation. We also discovered two shells during our time previewing the game.

The beta is spoiler-free and you can only access a small portion of the Fallgrim area in order to stop you from getting too far off-track. The deliberate and brutal battles should keep you plenty busy anyway, and if you're struggling, you'll want to carefully learn enemies' attacks in order to create your own strategy. You can also use a "harden" ability mid-fight in order to take a non-damaging attack.

GameStop has been hosting a bunch of sales over the past couple of months, but most of them have centered on PS4 and Xbox One games. That changes with the Game Days Sale, a week-long event running through July 11 that features rare discounts on Nintendo Switch exclusives, including Super Mario Maker 2 and Yoshi's Crafted World. PS4 and Xbox One games are prominently featured as well, though, making Game Days one of the most comprehensive GameStop sales of the year so far.

Pokemon Go July 2020 Field Research Tasks And Research Breakthrough Reward

3 years 10 months ago

July is here, and it's shaping up to be another busy month for Pokemon Go. On top of all the in-game events Niantic has lined up over the next few weeks, a new batch of Field Research tasks is now live, and if you complete enough of them, you'll earn a new Research Breakthrough reward: Larvitar.

Each time you achieve a Research Breakthrough in July, your reward will be an encounter with Larvitar, the base form of the powerful Tyranitar. There's also a chance that the Larvitar you encounter will be Shiny, so there's a good incentive to complete as much Field Research as you can this month.

As a refresher, Field Research tasks are distributed via Poke Stops. The first one you complete each day will net you a stamp, and collecting seven stamps will lead to a Research Breakthrough. You can see the full list of July's Field Research tasks, as compiled by The Silph Road, below.

Watch Dogs product and brand marketer Andrien Gbinigie, who was accused of sexual assault in June, worked out of the Ubisoft Toronto location. However, Ubisoft did not confirm if he was the employee in question.
