Halo Infinite Reveal This Month Will Focus On Campaign

3 years 10 months ago

After years of waiting, Microsoft will finally show off Halo Infinite during the Xbox Series X first-party showcase on July 23. Now, developer 343 Industries has begun to set expectations for the event.

In a blog post, 343 said fans can look forward to the "first look' at Halo Infinite's campaign. "We're excited to share what the team’s been working on--the first look at Halo Infinite's campaign is coming on July 23!" the developer explained.

The wording here seems to suggest that the July 23 event will focus on Halo Infinite's campaign as opposed to its multiplayer component. That's probably a bummer for some part of the fanbase, but it makes sense that Microsoft would want to hone in one on component of the game at the start. Presumably the multiplayer reveal is being saved for a later date.

Pokemon Go Adds Team Rocket's Jessie And James

3 years 10 months ago

Team Rocket balloons have begun appearing in Pokemon Go, giving you a new way to battle the villainous group, and the team's most infamous duo have joined the fight. Jessie and James, Ash's recurring antagonists from the Pokemon animated series, have arrived in Pokemon Go, giving you a chance to challenge them.

True to form, Jessie and James can be found piloting a giant Meowth-shaped hot air balloon. The duo will appear randomly in the game and only for a limited time, so there's no telling when you'll encounter them. If you do spot their distinctive balloon, however, simply tap it to initiate a battle with them.

Coinciding with their debut, new avatar items inspired by Jessie and James have been added to Pokemon Go's in-game shop, letting you dress your trainer in their signature Team Rocket uniforms. The second weekly set of Pokemon Go Fest challenges also arrives this week, and this one focuses on battling Team Rocket, making Jessie and Jame's appearance quite timely.

Fortnite Pleasant Park Floating Ring Locations (Week 4 Guide)

3 years 10 months ago

A new set of Season 3 challenges is now live in Fortnite. Like last week's batch, one of Week 4's missions revolves around floating rings; specifically, the challenge asks you to collect floating rings at Pleasant Park. If you need help tracking those down, we've put together this map and guide showing you where the floating rings are located and how to complete the challenge.

Where Are The Pleasant Park Floating Rings?

There are at least four floating rings scattered around Pleasant Park, which is how many you'll need to collect to complete the challenge. Pleasant Park itself is located between grid squares D2 and D3, but the rings are all around the outskirts of the area. We've marked down the locations of all the floating rings we've found on the map below.

Pleasant Park floating rings map

How To Complete The Challenge

Much like Week 3's floating ring challenge, all you need to do to collect the rings is walk or jump into them. The most expedient way to complete the challenge would be to start with one on the bottom left, then head north to collect the ring at the base of the zipline and ride that to reach the remaining two rings. Once you've collected all four, you'll get 35,000 season XP for your troubles.

As WB Rumors Swirl, Microsoft Is Open To Acquiring More Studios For Xbox

3 years 10 months ago

Microsoft isn't done acquiring new studios, head of Xbox Phil Spencer has revealed. Originally reported by Gamesindustry.biz, Xbox Game Studios' first priority is supporting already acquired studios like Double Fine and Obsidian, but Spencer said that the door is open for more acquisitions.

"We have really strong support from Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft, and Amy Hood, the CFO. And there's been no signal at all that we should be slowing down, but just to go at a pace that is maintainable for us as a leadership team," Spencer said. "We're always out there talking to people. But it has to be the right opportunity."

This lines up with a recent report that Microsoft expressed interest in purchasing Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment (WB Games) from AT&T. WB Games includes Rocksteady (Batman Arkham Knight), NetherRealm Studios (Mortal Kombat 11), and more. No sale has been announced and the deal would most likely not include IP like Batman.

Half-Life 3 Was Nearly A Procedurally-Generated Rogue-Lite

3 years 10 months ago

Since the release of Half-Life 2: Episode 2 in 2007, Valve has gone through multiple iterations of a potential Half-Life 3. One such idea would've turned the game into a replayable rogue-lite of sorts, after the success of the Left 4 Dead franchise.

The idea, detailed in Geoff Keighley's Final Hours of Half-Life: Alyx, was in development during 2013 and would've added an element of proceduralism to Half-Life. Players would have to navigate a procedurally generated building to save a prisoner and engage in random enemy encounters. More traditional story elements would've been served in-between these runs, but the core principle would be replayability.

The idea was ultimately canned, but not for straying away from the foundations of the series. Instead, this version of Half-Life 3 suffered from development issues with Valve's Source Engine 2, which made development challenging. Source 2 was missing features such as lighting, save functionality, and visibility options, which compounded with the difficulty of modelling outdoor areas in an engine more suited to blocky interior ones. These issues contributed to the cancelation of this Half-Life 3 iteration, as well as a proposed Left 4 Dead 3.

Here's Our First Look At PS5 Game Boxes

3 years 10 months ago

Sony has officially unveiled what PS5 game boxes are going to look like. They don't differ drastically from the PS4 box art, but sport a white stripe at the top that should make them easy to spot on your shelves if the two are mixed together.

The reveal was made using the official box art for Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The standalone game includes the new PlayStation Studios logo. Where the top banner on PS4 games was previously blue with white lettering, it's white with black lettering on PS5 boxes.

Sony clearly didn't have as much work to do when transitioning to the new generation this time around. Its early PS3 designs, including the lettering on the system itself and the game boxes, was much different than its later designs--the revisions were what Sony stuck with going forward, both on PS4 and PS5. Ironically, this early lettering was very similar to the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies' logos.

World Of Warcraft Is Getting Controller Support With Shadowlands, But Don't Expect A Console Port

3 years 10 months ago

Among many other things, World of Warcraft's upcoming Shadowlands expansion introduces official controller support to the game for the first time since the MMO debuted on PC in 2004. In a new interview with GameSpot, game director Ion Hazzikostas spoke about why Blizzard is now adding controller support and--sorry!--why this doesn't mean a console port of WoW is coming.

Hazzikostas said the controller support for WoW will come in the form of giving users access to the application programming interface (API) to enable a controller setup. You won't be able to simply plug in an Xbox or PlayStation controller and play WoW, but this API access should allow people using the Xbox Adaptive Controller and others to play the game in a way that suits their needs.

This new controller support is aimed at giving people with physical disabilities or other impairments the ability to enjoy WoW without too much of a headache, Hazzikostas said.

Why World Of Warcraft Is Making Such A Big Change To Starting Zones With Shadowlands

3 years 10 months ago

With the new Shadowlands expansion, World of Warcraft is making a major change to its starting zones. Blizzard is sending new players to a place called Exile's Reach, which is level 1-10 zone where players will learn the basics before setting out on their journey to higher levels and new areas.

Game director Ion Hazzikostas tells GameSpot that Blizzard is introducing Exile's Reach to help newcomers experience WoW's new content faster and catch up with friends who might be deeper into the game. The new area is also meant to give fresh players a look at the best of WoW in 2020, as opposed to making players slog through content that is years old.

"Something we've heard from our communities and something we've heard from people in our team who tried to get friends or family members into the game for the first time, there's something that's really daunting about 15 years of content and the feeling that you're just going to be hopelessly behind. And that it's overwhelming," Hazzikostas said.

WoW Game Director On Releasing Shadowlands During COVID-19 And Working From Home

3 years 10 months ago

Like most other video game studios, Blizzard Entertainment has sent its developers home to work remotely amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and this includes the World of Warcraft team. In a new interview with GameSpot, game director Ion Hazzikostas spoke about some of the challenges of working on the ongoing support for WoW and the Shadowlands expansion from a work-from-home setup.

"It's been an intense few months for the team, adapting to these circumstances," Hazzikostas said. "It's also incredibly heartening to be working on something that we see bringing people together in these difficult times. We've seen Azeroth really be an escape and a way of connecting with other people in a time when social connection feels so precious and hard to come by."

Hazzikostas said it's difficult to quantify, but anecdotally, he's been encouraged to see so much positivity and an increased sense of community among WoW players during lockdowns.

Capcom Says 80% Of All Of Its Sales Are Now Digital, And It's Growing

3 years 10 months ago

Resident Evil and Monster Hunter publisher Capcom has revealed that 80% of all its game sales are now digital, and that it is aiming to grow that figure to at least 90% soon.

Just last year, Capcom reported that digital sales made up only 53% of its total. This latest figure encapsulates sales between the beginning of April 2019 and end of March 2020.

As a result of the growth, Capcom is focusing even harder on digital distribution, aiming to reach a 90% digital share in the medium term.

The Witcher Spin-Off Thronebreaker Is Now Out On iOS

3 years 10 months ago

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales was an accompaniment to CD Projekt RED's release of a standalone version of Gwent--the card game first introduced in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. It's been out on consoles and PC for some time, but today it joins Gwent in the jump over to mobile.

Thronebreaker uses Gwent as its mechanic for combat, but it's otherwise a new standalone story in The Witcher universe that doesn't center on Geralt of Rivia. Instead, it acts as a prequel to game trilogy, staring Queen Meve of Lyria and Rivia as she fights back against the invading Nilfgaardian Empire.

The story helps contextualize the political strife present in the core Witcher titles, and even explains how Geralt received his title from Rivia. It's a long role-playing adventure with choices to make, various regions to explore, and battles to fight, which you can now do on iOS. Thronebreaker is up for purchase on the App Store, with CD Projekt RED promising an Android version later this year.

Here's How Much The World's Biggest SSD Will Cost You

3 years 10 months ago

Nimbus, the World Record holder for the biggest SSD, has revealed consumer pricing for their 100TB model. As Techradar reports, this figure was previously only available on demand, but now anyone can buy it...if they have the money.

The 100TB Nimbus Exadrive will cost you $40,000. That's $400 per TB, so you're paying a premium for this model. For comparison, the 50TB is $12,500, which is $250 per TB. In any case, it's a whole lot of money.

The next closest competitor for "biggest SSD" is a 60TB Seagate model. When this launched in 2017, it had an estimated cost of $40,000, according to Exxxact. However, that was not a SATA drive, as this one is.

These are 3.5 inch models, and are designed with industry and military in mind rather than the average consumer. They come with a five-year warranty.

Destiny 2 Eyes Of Savathun Guide: Ruinous Effigy Catalyst

3 years 10 months ago

If you've been wandering the solar system in Destiny 2 during the Season of Arrivals, you've probably noticed the weird Eyes of Savathun floating around. These blue orbs have always been immune to gunfire--until now. With the release of the new Ruinous Effigy Exotic trace rifle, we now have a way to destroy the orbs, and a reason to do so.

There are 50 Eyes of Savathun to destroy, and knocking out all of them seems likely to set back the Hive Witch Queen's efforts in the solar system. Finding and wrecking all 50 Eyes will earn you the Hive Optometrist Triumph, which goes toward your Moments of Triumph and Season of Arrivals seals. You'll also earn progress toward the Ruinous Effigy Exotic catalyst, so it's worth hunting them down. It's worth noting that you don't need to destroy every Eye to complete the catalyst, so if you don't care about seals but do care about Ruinous Effigy, you can quit at around 30 Eyes destroyed.

Here's the complete list of locations for Eyes of Savathun, complete with images to help you track down all of them. Most are on the four locations the Darkness is currently occupying, but you'll also find some in The Whisper mission on Io and in the new Prophecy dungeon.

Street Fighter Was Inspired By A Loose Game Adaptation Of A Jackie Chan Movie

3 years 10 months ago

1987's Street Fighter was Capcom's first fighting game, and it was where the six-button control and input system that has been a huge part of fighting games ever since was invented. While the series became much bigger and better with Street Fighter II, the original is a very important game--and as it turns out, it was first envisioned by the director when he was bored in a meeting and thinking about past jobs.

In a new deep-dive oral history of Street Fighter on Polygon, game director Takashi Nishiyama has reflected on the game's creation, and how he started to conceptualize it during a meeting. "One day at Capcom, we had a meeting between the development staff and the sales team, and this particular meeting happened to run very long--I think it was about two hours," he recalls. "Personally, as someone on the development side, I found it very hard to stay interested during these meetings, so I tended to daydream and think about games."

Nishiyama says that the game came to him into this moment. "There was just this one moment where the idea for Street Fighter popped into my head and I drew it out on a piece of paper during the meeting," he recalls, saying that he showed it to Capcom producer Yoshiki Okamoto (who was sitting next to him) and it earned his approval.

Nolan North Says Chris Pine Would Have Made A Good Nathan Drake In An Uncharted Movie

3 years 10 months ago

Spider-Man actor Tom Holland has been cast as Nathan Drake for the upcoming Uncharted movie that won't follow any of the previous game's stories but instead tell a new one focusing on a young Drake.

Had Sony Pictures went with a 1:1 adaptation of the games, actor Nolan North--who plays Drake in the game series--believes Chris Pine would have been a top choice for the role. North had a small role in Star Trek: Into Darkness, and working with Pine on some scenes, he saw that Pine would have made a very fitting Drake.

"I got to watch Chris Pine work, and [I] sat with him at lunch. One time in the makeup trailer I said, 'If a script called Uncharted ever comes across your agent's desk you should take a good hard look at it. Because I think you'd be perfect for it,'" North told Fandom.

3 years 10 months ago

Werewolf: The Apocalypse - Earthblood has debuted gameplay footage during a Nacon Connect stream, and revealed that the game is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X alongside current systems and PC (via the Epic Games Store). The game will launch on February 4, 2021.

The game will cast players as Cahal, a werewolf who is on a quest home to protect family and friends from the corporation Endron. It'll be up to you to take this corporation down by using your werewolf powers to batter any and all enemies you encounter.

The trailer, below, shows Cahal in human, wolf, and werewolf forms. It looks like gameplay will differ depending on your form, and you'll only be able to truly unleash on enemies in werewolf mode.

This single-player action game was originally announced as a 2020 release, but it has since been delayed.

A few other games were shown off or revealed during the Nacon Connect stream, and you can check them out below.

Here's the three cars included in this last wave of Season 1 DLC, as per the press release:

  • Sweeper: This midsize racer is a perfect blend of agility, speed and toughness - a great all-rounder for every type of race.
  • Hearse: This banger racing classic excels at derbies since it can both give and take serious punishment.

Donkey Kong Country And Two Other Classics Coming To Switch This Month In New NES/SNES Update

3 years 10 months ago

Nintendo Switch Online subscribers have three new games coming to them this month, including one of the SNES' best classic platformers. Donkey Kong Country is joining the console's SNES line-up, alongside SNES wrestling game Natsume Championship Wrestling and the EA-published NES title The Immortal.

These titles will join the current line-up on July 15.

Donkey Kong Country, a Rareware classic, is the highlight here--a SNES title with (for the time) jaw-dropping graphics that eventually begat the excellent Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze on Switch. It's a great platformer, although it was also included on the SNES Classic Edition, so if you own one of those you already have access to it. We're holding out hope that Donkey Kong Country 2 will eventually make its way to the Switch.
