MW3’s Campaign Feels Like a Glorified Warzone Tutorial

MW3 campaign review

Throughout the Call of Duty franchise, critical fans have argued that the single-player campaign often feels like a tutorial for the real meat of the game: multiplayer. If that argument rings true for any game, though, it is Modern Warfare 3, as the MW3 campaign is a glorified Warzone tutorial.

Picking up immediately after 2022’s MW2 campaign, this seemingly rushed title from developer Sledgehammer Games is a direct sequel to the previous game. This feels odd in-and-of itself for a series, which usually hops between sub-series each year. But the main issue with the single-player MW3 campaign isn’t its continuity but its length and structure.

Overwatch 2 Mauga

Blizzard Entertainment revealed Mauga as the next hero in Overwatch 2. Mauga is a Samoan Tank Hero that wields two chain guns called Gunny and Cha-Cha.

Mauga was revealed during BlizzCon 2023, and he is the first Samoan hero in the game. He will make his debut when Season 8 of Overwatch 2 starts on December 5, 2023. His kit revolves around the use of his two chainguns. Gunny is the left one, and it fires incendiary rounds that ignite enemies. Cha-cha is the volatile right chain gun, and it deals critical hits on burning enemies. Each gun can be shoot separately or in unison.

Three other core abilities that Mauga can use were introduced. One is Overrun, an unstoppable charge designed to break enemy lines. Overwatch 2's 39th hero is double chaingun wielding tank Mauga

BlizzCon is back - as an in-person event for the first time in four years - and Blizzard kicked off its opening ceremony with a bit of an Overwatch 2 blowout, including a reveal for the series' 39th hero, chaingun-wielding tank Mauga.

Mauga's announcement wasn't, admittedly, much of a surprise, giving he inadvertently got a pre-show unveiling on Switch's eShop news channel, but he's now been made official thanks to BlizzCon. And, as seen in his reveal trailer, Mauga - which means "mountain" in Samoan - is armed with two chainguns: affectionately known as Gunny and Cha-Cha.

Gunny is an incendiary chaingun, whose bullets will burn enemies that receive sufficient damage; Cha-Cha, meanwhile, is a a "volatile" chaingun that deals critical burn damage. Blizzard notes they can either be fired individually or in unison.

World of Warcraft's The War Within expansion kickstarts multi-part Worldsoul Saga next year

BlizzCon has brought big news for World of Warcraft fans as the MMO prepares to celebrate its 20th anniversary next year; Blizzard's announced not only its next expansion, The War Within, but the two coming after that, all forming chapters in the newly revealed Worldsoul Saga.

The Worldsoul Saga was enthusiastically unveiled by Blizzard veteran Chris Metzen, who returned to the company late last year after departing in 2016. This new World of Warcraft story arc is set to play out across multiple expansions over the next few years, starting with The War Within - WoW's tenth expansion - in 2024.

The War Within takes players into heart of Azeroth itself, where they'll explore new subterranean kingdoms, engage with ancient cultures like the Earthen Dwarves - a new Allied race - and the terrifying Nerubians of Azj-Kahet. Azj-Kahet is one of several new zones coming in the expansion, alongside the Isle of Dorn, The Ringing Deeps, and Hallowfall.

Cocoon's developers on bringing "the most complex game idea" they've ever had to life

Daydreaming. That's how it started. Daydreaming. Cocoon designer and director Jeppe Carlsen, whose previous works include Inside and Limbo, was simply daydreaming one day, and the idea of a game that encapsulated worlds within worlds within worlds came to him.

"I've been making game mechanics and designing personas for so many years that I also just walk around in everyday life and think about mechanics," Carlsen tells me over Zoom. "I don't remember the exact context or what triggered it. It was just a thought of like, what if you could basically have a level, that is to begin with just a maze or a level, but you can jump out of it. And you can carry that around. And you can put these levels into each other.

"There was just that thought."

Let's get evil in Baldur's Gate 3

Today is bitter-sweet because I need to let you know Emma has decided to move on from writing her monthly column, Emma's Adventures. She's had fun with them, she says, and appreciates all your kind remarks, but she wants to use the significant time they take to write to focus on a new direction in her life. So let's wish her well for the future - we were lucky to have her while we did.

The sweet part of this is I now get to realise something I've been keeping in the dark for far too long: my, um, dark side. Ever since I killed all of my Dragon Age: Origins companions, I've been fascinated by evil playthroughs in games, and now, with Emma moving on, I have some time and space to explore them - with you.

You may remember I experimented with the beginnings of an evil Dragon Age: Inquisition playthrough earlier this year. I always wondered how far the game would let me go and so I decided to try it. That adventure will continue, by the way, especially as we close in on Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, but before I go back to it, there's another adventure I want to take you on. A more recent adventure - one everyone's been talking about. I would like to get evil in Baldur's Gate 3.

Thirsty Suitors Review

6 months 1 week ago

I never thought I’d experience the comedically over-the-top drama of Indian serials through characters in a rural American town. Burned bridges abound and tensions run high as mountains in Timber Hills, but Thirsty Suitors cleverly uses familiar turn-based battle mechanics to let its lovable characters creatively reconcile through self-reflection. Rather than making matters worse, fighting gives them space to share their deepest feelings, smartly showing how we often need to look back in order to move forward in life. While Thirsty Suitors does try to say and do too much through its battles, leaving me wanting more out of other parts of the story, who knew therapeutically throwing hands could be this fun.

You play as Jala, a local skating legend who left Timber Hills on bad terms with both her family and more than a few exes, which puts her in a tough spot when she suddenly moves back home after a bad breakup. From there you’ll skate around town, unraveling the mystery behind a hilarious skate punk cult in an abandoned theme park while reconnecting with the important people from your past. Jala’s talks with these characters carry most of the weight in Thirsty Suitors, with cathartic conversations clearing up misunderstandings and acknowledging past mistakes in the form of fights. This turn-based RPG combat always kept me engaged thanks to how they weave precise timing into each encounter, whether that's spamming a button to dodge or rotating the stick to in just the right way for an attack.

Gran Turismo 7's Update 1.40 Is the Biggest One Since Launch

6 months 1 week ago

If you haven't played Gran Turismo 7 yet, you might have just gotten new incentive to rev up those engines. Developer Polyphony Digital announced a huge 1.40 patch that adds a ton of new content, including four-player split-screen races.

A new PS Blog post details the changes and additions, including snow race tracks that allow for icy races with the option to race in the day or night. Seven new cars have also been added to Gran Turismo 7, including the Tesla Model 3. You can check out the list of cars below:

  • Dodge Charger R/T 426 Hemi ‘68
  • Dodge Charger SRT Demon '18
  • Lexus LFA '10

Split-screen races are also available to PS5 users thanks to update 1.40. Previously, only two players could take advantage of split-screen play, but the new update adds two additional players, allowing up to four to play locally at the same time.

Gran Turismo 7's Update 1.40 will be available to PS4 and PS5 users starting today at 11pm PT.

Ticket to Ride Legacy: Legends of the West Board Game Review

6 months 1 week ago

Ticket to Ride is a phenomenon. The original board game achieved the unthinkable, breaking out of nerd space and into the almost unassailable world of family board game fun and supermarket shelves, selling millions of copies in the process. Along the way, it’s spawned a whole host of different versions and expansions, becoming a mini-industry in its own right. This latest iteration, Ticket to Ride Legacy: Legends of the West is a whole new spin on the concept, creating a campaign of rail building which lasts across twelve games, with changes from the previous game carrying on into the next.

What’s in the Box

Ticket to Ride: Legends of the West comes in a truly massive box, especially compared to previous Ticket to Ride games. Sadly, we’re not allowed to tell you very much about the contents because most of it is closed away in individual boxes which you open as you progress through the game. We’re going to try and avoid spoilers in this review, although there might be one or two very minor ones for your first play, so we’re not going to talk about what’s inside.

CD Projekt Wants Cyberpunk 2077 to Undergo a 'Similar Evolution' to The Witcher

6 months 1 week ago

CD Projekt Red wants Cyberpunk 2077's sequel, codenamed Orion, to undergo a similar evolution to that of The Witcher franchise.

Speaking to PC Gamer, narrative director Igor Sarzyński compared the growth between 2007's The Witcher and its 2011 sequel, Assassins of Kings, with CD Projekt Red's hopes for its sci-fi role-playing game franchise.

"Consider The Witcher games and how much they changed with each instalment. We want a similar evolution here," Sarzyński said. "Cyberpunk 2077 was our first venture into a futuristic-sci-fi world with a ton of new gameplay mechanics, narrative tone, themes, and art direction.

"Some of the stuff worked almost right out of the box, such as the art, city design, music, interactive scene system, playstyles," he continued. "Other aspects took more time to get right, like character progression, NPC interactivity, and optimization.

"That’s natural; it’s impossible to nail everything on your first try. Now with all the game elements iterated and working well, we’ll focus on connecting them even tighter and creating a coherent, total immersion experience."

Spider-Man 2 Player Does an Amazing Job Making the Game Look Like the Marvel Noir Universe

6 months 1 week ago

Spider-Man 2 features a number of suits, including an Into The Spider-Verse Noir Suit (check out IGN’s list of all Spider-Man 2 suits to see them all). But one player took the Noir influence a step further and adjusted the game’s settings to make Spider-Man 2 look like it’s set in Marvel's Noir universe.

For the uninitiated, Spider-Man Noir is a character who’s part of the Marvel Noir universe. He’s an alternate take on the Spider-Man we know and love who exists in New York during the Great Depression. Spider-Man Noir actually appeared in 2010’s Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, as well as in the 2018 and 2023 animated Spider-Verse films, from which the Spider-Man 2 suit is lifted.

Redditor SpaceYetiGamer tweaked Spider-Man 2’s settings to get the game looking just right. IGN has verified the settings, and published a useful guide on how to make everything Spider-Noir.

WarioWare: Move It! Review

6 months 1 week ago

Like an “Oops, All Minigames!” version of Mario Party, the latest WarioWare continues its chaotic legacy by rapid-firing hundreds of ridiculous three-second microgames at you and your friends with reckless abandon. And like its predecessors, WarioWare: Move It!’s over-the-top silliness makes for a hilariously good time, even if you’re likely to have seen the vast majority of its antics within just a few hours. With some of the series’ most creative multiplayer modes, one second you’ll be told to catch a leaping fish by squeezing your feline legs together and the next you’ll find yourself returning curtsies as a pretty anime lady. The motion control accuracy of the Joy-Con doesn’t always rise to those challenges, but it’s all so fast, weird, and very often dumb that Move It! is just about guaranteed to make everyone at your house party fall over laughing – it certainly achieved as much with mine.

WarioWare isn’t exactly known for focusing on its story and Move It! is no exception. After an opening cutscene shows Wario winning a free vacation to an island paradise for him and all his friends, the usual Wario crew – including Ashley, Orbulon, Young Cricket, and 9-Volt – all head off to get into trouble while wearing floral prints. There’s really not much here aside from a shallow “Wario goes tropical” premise, but what’d you expect from a party game that includes a minigame where players compete to pluck the longest hairs out of a giant nose?

Thirsty Suitors Review – Jala’s Ex-Hausting Adventure

6 months 1 week ago

Thirsty Suitors on PC

Thirsty Suitors has been one of my most unexpected gaming joys of 2023, with the title originally catching my eye for the parallels it drew to the Scott Pilgrim franchise. However, as I soon discovered when I was given the opportunity to play a preview of the game, Thirsty Suitors is entirely original and quirky and puts a new spin on the whole ‘battle against angry exes’ thing.

Because I had found this preview to be such a blast, I was more than excited to give the completed game a run; and just as expected, the wacky, chaotic fun continued in full swing. While Thirsty Suitors does share some classic references to Scott Pilgrim, it also puts a refreshing spin on things to make the story feel entirely original.

Sony Forcing Bungie Layoffs is the Exact Opposite of What Should Be Happening

So many talented people have lost their jobs at Bungie at the hands of corporate greed. Let’s discuss how Sony forcing Bungie layoffs is the exact opposite of what should be happening.

On the 30th of October 2023, the gaming community at large began to hear that Bungie was laying off some of its staff. These kinds of things happen sadly, and often depending on the studio and their success. What rubs me the wrong way here is that it’s Bungie suffering the layoffs. We’re talking about a many multi-million-dollar successful developer suffering layoffs, under the watch and support of Sony—a multi-billion-dollar company.
