Punishing tragicomic RPG Lisa: The Painful is getting a definitive edition

11 months 1 week ago

Adam (RPS in peace) once described Lisa: The Painful as "Earthbound by way of thecatamites", but that was back in 2014 and there's a decent chance those references mean little to you. That might be part of the reason why Lisa has remained a cult classic, even if it has overwhelmingly positive reviews from those who persevered with the punishing, deranged, tragicomic RPG Maker game.

Now it's 2023 and Lisa: The Painful is getting a Definitive Edition re-release, and I'm lucky that I can draw on better known references. It's like Undertale by way of... Uh, thecatamites?

Star Wars: The Old Republic reportedly moving from BioWare to third-party developer

11 months 1 week ago

EA has confirmed reports it's in talks to move the development of BioWare's long-running free-to-play MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic to a third-party so the studio can focus on its upcoming new Mass Effect and Dragon Age instalments.

News of EA's plans were first reported by IGN, who claimed the publisher was currently considering shifting The Old Republic's development to Broadsword Online Games, a company run by former BioWare vice president and Mythic Entertainment co-founder Rob Denton, who previously worked on the Star Wars title in its early days.

Broadsword is no stranger to MMOs, of course - its other projects include ongoing work on Ultima Online and Dark Age of Camelot - and IGN reported EA had already signed a letter of intent with the studio, which would see The Old Republic deal finalised "as soon as this month".

Disney Dreamlight Valley welcomes Cinderella's Fairy Godmother tomorrow

11 months 1 week ago

Gameloft's wonderfully entertaining village life sim Disney Dreamlight Valley continues its early access journey tomorrow, 7th June, with the launch of its fifth major update, The Remembering, adding Cinderella's Fairy Godmother, a new Star Path reward track, and more.

The big news this time around is that the Forgotten Lands' mysterious pumpkin house, which has sat vacant amid gloomy woods since launch, will finally have an occupant as part of what Gameloft is calling Dreamlight Valley's "biggest story update yet".

To the surprise of no-one with at least a passing interest in Disney, its new occupant will be Cinderella's Fairy Godmother - who comes complete with her own set of Friendship Quests - with her arrival seemingly signalling a conclusion for Dreamlight Valley's first major story arc.

Angry Birds Is Getting a New Animated Series on Prime Video

11 months 1 week ago

Hit mobile game Angry Birds is getting a brand-new animated series on Amazon Prime.

Announced today, the 24-episode series, titled Angry Birds: Mystery Island, will follow three new hatchlings – Mia, Rosie, and Buddy. There’s also a foreign exchange piglet called Hamylton.

“We’re excited to work with Amazon to add a new chapter to the Hatchlings’ story in Angry Birds Mystery Island,” said Rovio's head of brand licensing, Hanna Valkeapää-Nokkala. “I’m sure fans of the Hatchlings will be eager to see them in their own series, with speaking voices for the first time.”

The show follows the four youngsters as they set off on an all-expenses-paid island getaway, but are instead mistakenly catapulted to a mysterious, uncharted island.

It’s not exactly FarCry, but the ragtag bunch will need to explore the island and unlock its secrets if they want to find their way home. Meanwhile, they encounter exotic sights and unexplained natural phenomena – all while being away from home with no parents in sight.

“Working with such a dream team and cast has been the highlight of my career,” said creator Eric Rogers. “Together, we are hatching a series full of comedy, heart, and binge-worthy mystery, filled with laugh-out-loud moments.”

How Tears of the Kingdom Players Are Unraveling the Mysteries Behind the Game’s Secret Language

11 months 1 week ago

The final trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom reignited the fervor of fans waiting for the sequel to Breath of the Wild. The roughly four-minute video provided glimpses of Link's upcoming adventures and obstacles in Hyrule, making others speculate about the game's story, lore, and secrets. But for Zoey McCullough and others within the deciphering community, the final trailer served as a realization that all of their hard work up to that point had been for naught.

Hiding in plain sight throughout the game’s trailers were tablets and architectural pieces adorned with unknown characters and symbols. To most people, these runes were merely aesthetic additions, but to a decipherer like McCullough, they were a quest unto themselves. McCullough had been hard at work deciphering exactly what, if anything, this mysterious fictional language was trying to say – but Tears of the Kingdom’s final trailer was forcing her and other decipherers like her to start over from scratch before the game had even been released. And her work has only grown more complex since.

Speaking with IGN, McCullough explained the immense difficulty and challenges behind deciphering the hidden language of Tears of the Kingdom, the overall camaraderie and thrill of finally cracking the code, and advice for newcomers to the decipherer community.

A Pokémon Tournament Was Canceled After All 4 Finalists Protested Using Metronome

11 months 1 week ago

A Pokémon Scarlet and Violet tournament in South Korea was canceled after its finalists planned to stage a unique protest.

All four players had agreed to field teams made up entirely of pokémon that only know Metronome – a unique and unpredictable move that fires off a completely random move when used.

“Pokemon Korea saw our teams, didn't like it, and therefore disqualified all four of us for playing Metronome,” said Nash, one of the disqualified finalists, in a Twitter post.

The result would have been a tournament final that was decided by pure chance, but The Pokémon Trainers Cup was completely canceled before this could go ahead.

This also meant that the four competing trainers lost their Day 2 pass to the World Championships later this year.

“[We] decided to go on Metronome battle to protest against all these issues within our community,” added Nash.

Pokémon players in Asian regions have been increasingly frustrated by how tournaments are run there, especially when compared to other regions.

“No irl events, constant problems in tour system, disregarding younger divisions, absurd compensations for the problems they caused," Nash said. "But the real problem behind all this is that they show absolute disrespect to our players.”

Summer Game Fest 2023: How to Watch and What to Expect

11 months 1 week ago

IGN's Summer of Gaming is officially on, and the events keep rolling with Summer Game Fest 2023 on Thursday, June 8. With E3 being cancelled, Summer Game Fest promises to be one of the biggest events of the season. Jeff Keighley's show debuted some heavy hitters last year, like The Last of Us Part 1 and Marvel's Midnight Suns, so there's definitely potential for juicy surprises this time around, especially since it's a live in-person event this year.

If you want to tune into Summer Game Fest we'll point you to where you can watch the livsetream and let you know when it starts. We'll even do a bit of speculation about what to expect!

Summer Game Fest 2023 Start Time

Summer Game Fest kicks off on June 8, 2023 at 12pm PT/ 3PM ET/8PM BST, and if you're watching from Australia, that means the show will be premiering Friday, June 9 at 5am AEST. We don't know which games will be at Summer Game Fest, but we do know the show will be around two hours long, so there will probably be a ton of content stuffed into the presentation.

IGN will also be hosting a pre- and post-show for Summer Game Fest, and that will kick off at 11:30am PT/2:30PM ET/7:30PM BST, or 30 minutes before the show officially starts. The post show will immediately follow Summer Game Fest. This looks to be one of the most packed events for Summer of Gaming.

Ding ding: Diablo 4 has its first Level 100 Hardcore player (and then the servers killed their character)

11 months 1 week ago

UPDATE: Diablo 4's first level 100 Hardcore character is no more, after a dropped connection to the game's servers killed Carn's Barbarian. The moment it happened was captured on stream, and you can watch it for yourself in this clip on Carn's Twitch channel, aptly titled "rip?".

Former Starcraft and Dota pro "cArn" has won the race to hit level 100 on a Diablo 4 Hardcore character, thus earning him a letter from the king and a nap. This is Diablo's permadeath mode, where one death is enough to wipe your progress. He dinged his final ding on his Barbarian in the early hours of June 5th, just five days after the game's early access launch, and he's now been officially confirmed as the first Hardcore centurion. It's a feat that sounds as impressive as it does exhausting.

Meet the long COVID activists modding Elden Ring and The Witcher to raise awareness

11 months 1 week ago

One major obstacle to fighting long COVID is that we're still working out what it is. In the absence of a scientific consensus on what is still an emerging medical phenomenon, the World Health Organisation defines the condition loosely as "the continuation or development of new symptoms 3 months after the initial SARS-CoV-2 infection, with these symptoms lasting for at least 2 months with no other explanation." The most common long COVID symptoms, according to the UK National Health Service, are extreme tiredness, shortage of breath, muscle aches and loss of smell. But patients may experience many other, seemingly random symptoms, from tinnitus through diarrhoea to memory loss. The condition's progression can be unpredictable, too: people may get better only to relapse weeks or months down the road.

Wildfrost's first big update makes life easier for players old and new

11 months 1 week ago

Out of all the roguelike deckbuilders that have followed in Slay The Spire's footsteps, Wildfrost is my second favourite. The cardplay never quite reaches the dizzy heights of Spire or Monster Train, but it's far cuter than either of them and still absolutely splendid. Now's a great time to pick it up, too, because its first big update is primarily aimed at clarifying rules to help new players avoid all the painful deaths I suffered through.

Developers Deadpan Games have released a roadmap, too, revealing a rough plan for what they're working on next.

Planet of Lana - pace, poise and something more

11 months 1 week ago

Sometimes it's interesting to put genre aside and think in terms of traditions. When it comes to genre, Planet of Lana is very easy to pinpoint: it's a 2D side scrolling puzzle platformer, more specifically one that focuses on stealth and cinematic storytelling. Traditions, though? That makes it much more intriguing.

The genre stuff alone is enough is to slot this in alongside games like Inside and Somerville - games with which it also shares an apocalyptic focus. the world is being over-run by horrors! Escape if you can! All good, but traditions can be surprising, and as I played Planet of Lana I found myself thinking a little bit about the idea of masterpieces. Not masterpieces in the modern usage of the word perhaps, but in the old sense - I may have this wrong but let's go with it for now - of the piece of work someone makes to show to the world that they are very good at something.

Animated Angry Birds series coming to Amazon Prime, stars a piglet called Hamylton

11 months 1 week ago

Amazon and Rovio have announced a new animated TV series based on the popular mobile game Angry Birds.

Angry Birds: Mystery Island will follow the escapades of three new hatchlings - Mia, Rosie, and Buddy. There is also a new foreign-exchange piglet, and his name is the rather brilliant Hamylton.

According to a press release, these four "rambunctious tweens" receive an all expenses paid island getaway, but of course things are not going to go to plan. Rather than landing where they intended, they instead get unceremoniously catapulted onto an "uncharted island" (where I assume they will meet Nathan Drake).

Pokémon Go developer sorry for "technical issue" which saw recently-nerfed Remote Raids offer worse Shiny odds

11 months 1 week ago

UPDATE 9/6/23: Pokémon Go will host an apology raid event this Sunday, 11th June, allowing players another chance to try their luck finding a Shiny member of the Legendary Lake Trio.

Earlier this week, players discovered that the likelihood of finding a Shiny Legendary had been massively nerfed - after days of buying and using Remote Raid Passes. After the issue was brought to light, Niantic apologised and told Eurogamer this was due to an unfortunate error.

All Remote Raid Passes used on Lake Trio Legendary raids during this period are being refunded - which is good, because you'll need them once again on Sunday (there's no raiding them with regular passes, unfortunately).

Now Diablo 4 Is Out in the Wild, the True Horror of Its Costly Microtransactions Has Revealed Itself

11 months 1 week ago

Diablo 4 launched proper yesterday, June 6, and now all players can see just how pricey its microtransactions are.

Blizzard’s $70 action role-playing game leans heavily on in-game monetisation, with plans for various battle passes post-launch.

Available now, however, is the in-game shop, which has become a bone of contention among fans.

Diablo 4’s shop sells cosmetics only. There are no gameplay-affecting items up for sale. While that is very much a good thing, and in keeping with promises Blizzard made before launch, the pricing of some of these cosmetics has raised eyebrows.

Take the Triune Apostate armour set, for example. It weighs in at 2,500 Platinum. Platinum is Diablo 4’s premium in-game currency, and must itself be bought with real-world money. 2,500 Platinum will set you back £20.99 / $24.99 (2,500 plus 300 Platinum “free”).

If%20you%20have%20fancy%20taste%2C%20you%26%2339%3Bll%20need%20the%20money%20to%20pay%20for%20it.

The Cryptic Hunter mount costs £6.39. That’s a direct payment with real-world money. No need for Platinum.

Counter-Strike 2 Lets Players Refund Weapons

11 months 1 week ago

Counter-Strike 2 now lets players refund their weapons.

Developer Valve confirmed the feature, which Counter-Strike players have long-called for, in the tweet below.

“Bought the wrong thing? Meant to buy a different weapon, armor, or grenade? Sell your purchase back and buy again (during buy time).”

Currently, Counter-Strike does not allow refunds under any circumstances, which means if you buy a gun in error you either have to use it or fork out more cash to buy another.

It’s worth noting Counter-Strike rival Valorant, from Riot, does offer refunds.

The addition of refunds comes as part of a significant update for Counter-Strike 2, which is currently available to play as part of a limited test.

The update also includes a revised loadout system that lets players select 15 weapons from three categories (Valve demonstrated this in another tweet, below). Mirage has replaced Dust II on the test matchmaking servers, too.

Reality Bytes: Amid Evil VR is an intriguing experiment

11 months 1 week ago

Some games adapt to VR more naturally than others. Games that take place primarily in a cockpit, like Elite Dangerous or Euro Truck Simulator 2, need relatively little adjustment to make them enjoyable in VR. They don't require the player to move around much, and their whole shtick about providing an authentic, immersive experience.

Games that require a lot of fast movement, or require the player to keep track of a lot of different objects, are generally harder to make work through VR Goggles. Hence why Amid Evil VR caught my attention. Shooters are common VR fodder, but they're typically built as VR experiences from the ground up. Amid Evil, on the other hand, is a flatscreen retro shooter designed to be reactive, surreal, and above all, fast. It's a game where you zip around arcane dimensions like a magic missile, splattering weird little armoured guys with enchanted swords and a staff that fires planets. It's a brilliant game, one of the best old-skool shooters to emerge from the genre's revival. But on paper, it's about as VR friendly as Morpheus.

No Man's Sky's Singularity update explores AI corruption and robotic uprisings

11 months 1 week ago

Just a week after its leap onto Mac, No Man's Sky is back with another update, this one ushering in a new limited-time expedition focusing on AI corruption and robotic uprisings - and promising hints at future updates and "a deeper story to come".

Expeditions, for those unfamiliar with No Man's Sky's ways, are something like Hello Games' stab at live-service-style seasonal content, serving up limited-time, curated experiences that condense and reshuffle the exploratory space sim's various systems into a series of progression-based milestone challenges with some nifty rewards.

Its latest expedition, Singularity, which launches today, continues the story started in April's Interceptor update (the one with weird, corrupted worlds and strange Sentinel oddities), asking players to investigate curious robot heads delivering cryptic clues across the galaxy. Its events are said to be part of a longer narrative that'll play out as the year goes on.

Tamagotchi Uni Can Be Worn Like a Watch, Connect to Wi-Fi

Bandai announced a new Tamagotchi Uni model that will appear worldwide. Like the Tamagotchi Smart, which launched in Japan, it comes with an accessory that allows it to be worn like a watch. This model will also be able to connect directly to Wi-Fi without any additional steps, so you can update it. It will come out in July 2023, with Amazon noting a July 15, 2023. Pink and purple versions will be available. Each one will be $59.99.

The announcement went over some of the things people can expect. 20 adult characters will be present. You'll be able to marry them off and then raise their kids. However, it doesn't mention if there will be a "genetics" like system as in Tamagotchi On, where the child characters inherit traits from both parents for a totally original look. Minigames will be present, as usual, and there will be accessories for characters to wear. The language options will be English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish.
