Screenshot Saturday Mondays: Retro styles and dynamically slicing a cat (the cat is fine)

1 year 1 month ago

Every weekend, indie devs show off current work on Twitter's #screenshotsaturday tag. And every Monday, I bring you a selection of these snaps and clips. This week, my eye has been caught by retro-inspired stylings everywhere from JRPGs to platformers, and a demonstration slicing a cat Revengeance-style (do not worry, the cat is fine, it's not a real cat, it isn't even meant to be a fake cat, it really is fine). Come admire these interesting and attractive indies!

A Diablo 4 player beat the Ashava world boss solo during the weekend's Server Slam open beta event.

Not only that, Diablo YouTuber and streamer wudijo beat the boss with a hardcore character on the veteran difficulty.

Let's put this achievement into context: Ashava is a raid-style boss meant to offer a group of 12 players a stiff challenge that must be completed within a 15-minute time limit. wudijo downed Ashava on his own.

Chainsaw Man Nine Tiles Board Game Heading to Japan

1 year 1 month ago

Chainsaw Man Nine Tiles Board Game

Oink Games announced a new variant of one of its existing titles. On May 26, 2023, a Chainsaw Man Nine Tiles board game version will appear. It will cost 3,000 yen (~$22). It comes with 18 cards and is designed to be played by two people. Each card is 100mm x 55mm and features a scene from episode three of the anime on the front and back. There are also 30 "scene" cards to match.

In Nine Tiles, players are attempting to match the nine tiles in front of them to the example card before their opponent. Each card in their set has images on the front and back, and it is possible to complete each overall design with the nine they possess. The person to get the most points by matching their tiles to the scenes assigned them by the end of the rounds is the winner.

It isn’t uncommon for Oink Games’ Nine Tiles to appear with different themes. For example, there’s a version of it with Pokemon involved. Nine Tiles Pokemon Dokoda is available in Japan. However, due to licensing, it can't be directly ordered.

How to Play as Chun-Li and Ryu Street Fighter 6 Videos Shared

How to Play as Chun-Li and Ryu Street Fighter 6 Videos Shared

To help people prepare for Street Fighter 6, Capcom started sharing “how to play” videos for characters like Chun-Li and Ryu. The clips for both appeared over the weekend. Each one shows the characters in the training stage with commentary to help people understand how their traits can help with certain attacks.

First, here’s the one showing how to play as Ryu in Street Fighter 6. It cited his “intuitive” moves, as well as the ability to use Hadoken projectile and mid-range moves to allow someone to attack, but perhaps still remain out of reach. It also pointed out how some of his attacks, when used, help move him toward the opponent to set up a combo.

In the video clip going over how to play as Chun-Li in Street Fighter 6, it noted her speed when moving and attacking. It pointed out how she has easy-to-execute moves, like Ryu, and that they can chain into her special attacks. It ended by emphasizing the versatility of her Hazanshu attack.

Mouse Is A Noir Retro Shooter Inspired By Classic Cartoons

1 year 1 month ago

Mouse game

Fans of first-person shooters and old-timey cartoons should keep an eye on Mouse. The recently announced game slaps the classic animation of yesteryear over a retro shooter template to create an experience that's old-school in more ways than one.

Mouse comes from Polish indie developer Fumi Games and is billed as a noir story-driven shooter about murder and deception set in a corrupt city. Players control a private detective wielding vintage firearms like a Tommy Gun, revolver, and Carcano rifle to blast the rather adorable rodent enemies.

The game’s Steam page describes Mouse as a play-your-way type of experience, emphasized by a power-up system in which players can collect special abilities and weapon upgrades that cater to a chosen playstyle. The trailer shows the game is very much a work-in-progress, but it’s already an eye-catcher.

Mouse is rendered in the classic rubber hose animation style that defined early 20th-century animation, which has found new life in video games such as Cuphead and Bendy and the Ink Machine. The game has no release window but will come to PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC.

Xbox's Activision Blizzard Deal Approved by European Commission

1 year 1 month ago

Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard has been approved by the European Commission. The approval brings Microsoft's historic deal one step closer to completion.

The European Commission announced on its website that it has approved the proposed acquisition under the EU Merger Regulation.

The EC reached similar conclusions as the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) — that the deal would not harm the console market but could harm cloud gaming — but was satisfied with Microsoft's proposed remedies for these concerns.

Improving the cloud gaming market.

Microsoft's solutions appeared so effective to the EC that it now expects the deal will bring "significant improvement" to the cloud gaming market, a stark difference to the CMA's conclusion that saw it block the deal last month.

"The commitments [offered by Microsoft] fully address the competition concerns identified by the Commission and represent a significant improvement for cloud gaming as compared to the current situation," said the European Commission's statement.

"The commitments fully address the competition concerns identified by the Commission and represent a significant improvement for cloud gaming."

Addressing its concerns that the deal going through would monopolise the sector, Microsoft has offered a 10-year licensing commitment for consumers in the European Economic Area (EEA). This commitment guarantees that Activision Blizzard games will not be locked to Game Pass Ultimate or the Xbox Cloud Gaming platform.

Diablo 4: How Blizzard Created the Best and Worst Mom With Lilith

1 year 1 month ago

Lilith, the daughter of hatred, takes center stage in Diablo 4. As mentioned in Diablo 3 through scattered documents found around the High Heavens, she has returned to Sanctuary to establish herself as the mother of all creation. Players were given a glimpse into her overwhelming presence in Sanctuary through the Diablo 4 open beta period and stress test, with several cutscenes illustrating how her presence has affected the world at large.

Sean Copeland, Senior Manager of Lore at Blizzard, took the opportunity to sit down with us at IGN to elaborate on what makes Lilith such a compelling antagonist for Diablo 4, and what her reappearance in Sanctuary means for the world of Diablo.

“Metaphorically, Lilith represents a threat," says Copeland. "While I would say “That’s just life in Sanctuary!” this is one of those threats that you just can’t ignore.” Copeland elaborated, explaining just what Lilith’s reappearance means in the grand scheme of things.

“She’s not coming just to build a kingdom and establish dominance like we saw in West March... We’re seeing a threat that’s going to affect everyone, everywhere. This is like Reaper of Souls. No one can escape what’s happening here. So while it’s an amazing moment, yes, the creator has returned, but again it’s ‘What does this creator want from us?’ And what is the toll it will take on the world?”

Her role as the primary antagonist in this entry of the Diablo series may be more multifaceted than Blizzard is letting on. While Lilith herself is an imposing figure, summoned forth from a horrific ritual witnessed in the “By Three They Come” announcement trailer, there was a glimpse into something more human, more tender than what we’ve seen in a Diablo antagonist thus far through the open beta period.

The Green New Deal Simulator begins with a talking owl. This owl can’t sleep at night, mainly because it’s nocturnal, but also because the planet’s impending environmental doom has affected their shoddy sleep schedule. That’s where the Green New Deal Simulator comes in, a micro deck-builder about transitioning the USA into a post-carbon economy, all while keeping employment rates stable. The results are simultaneously funny, educational, intense, and they help that damn owl get a good night's rest.

Amazon announces fresh stab at turning The Lord of the Rings into an MMO

1 year 1 month ago

Amazon has announced fresh plans to adapt The Lord of the Rings into a new MMO "adventure", developed in-house by the studio behind New World, for PC and consoles.

The project will feature "the beloved stories of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings", adapted from Tolkien's original books, as licensed by rights owner Embracer. (Don't expect this to tie-in specifically with the Peter Jackson movie trilogy, or even Amazon's own Rings of Power show, set a thousand years before.)

"Bringing players a fresh take on The Lord of the Rings has long been an aspiration for our team, and we're honoured and grateful that Middle-earth Enterprises is entrusting us with this iconic world," Amazon Games boss Christoph Harmann said. "We're also pleased to be expanding our relationship with Embracer Group following our Tomb Raider deal last year, as they've proven to be excellent collaborators."

DF Weekly: Hands-on with the Asus ROG Ally - is it really a Steam Deck killer?

1 year 1 month ago

It's a massive 105-minute DF Direct Weekly landing today, with myself, John and Alex discussing reactions to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, along with some follow-ups on John's coverage last week. We also discuss the fact that Sharp is providing a new display for an as-yet unannounced console (Switch 2?) while we also give a preview of sorts to A Plague Tale: Requiem's new 60fps performance mode. How did Asobo deliver this and to what extent is it really running at 60 frames per second? We'll have more on that later this week, but just remember - there's no such thing as a free lunch when it comes to real-time rendering and we're not just looking at rendering resolution reductions here. Regardless, 60fps was the key demand from many console gamers and it's great to see the developer respond.

The focus of this blog post concerns the Asus ROG Ally - and why we didn't have a review on embargo last week. Essentially, there seems to be an issue with my unit where the 15W performance mode runs significantly more slowly than it should when it is plugged into the mains - and bearing in mind that battery life is at a premium on this machine, that's how I benched it. Just as I finished my review, various Ryzen 7840U benchmarks emerged that seemed somewhat at odds with my results, which shouldn't be happening as the ROG Ally's Z1 Extreme should be on par or better than the results I was getting.

3D artist explains how water is animated in games such as Uncharted 4, Subnautica

1 year 1 month ago

Water features a lot in video games - Bertie even ran a Five of the Best supporter's piece on it earlier this year. But how do developers actually make it look so, well, water-like?

According to 3D artist Thomas of Twitter account Stylized Station, there is a lot involved to get it just right. It takes "a ton of smoke and mirrors in the background, without anyone ever realising it," they explained in a very thorough Twitter thread, noting "creating real-time simulated water is still really hard to do".

Thomas stated that most developers use a variety of "cheats" and techniques that see things such as textures, VFX sprites, normal maps, and basic geometry "smashed together" in order to give the "illusion of flowing water".

EU approves Microsoft's $68.7bn Activision Blizzard bid

1 year 1 month ago

Microsoft's stalled Activision Blizzard buyout received some positive news today, as the EU offered its approval.

The European Commission had been one of three major regulators standing in the way of the deal, alongside the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) - the latter of which dramatically blocked the deal last month, dealing a sizable blow to it succeeding overall. Microsoft is now set to appeal that decision.

In Brussels, however, it's better news for Microsoft - after a couple of concessions ended up winning over EU regulators.

If You Don't Know What To Do In Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Talk To Patricia

1 year 1 month ago

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a huge game that is particularly skilled at providing you with distractions. I crossed the 90-hour mark recently, and my in-game percentage tracker still shows less than 50% completion. Sometimes, however, you may run into a situation where you're not sure where you want to go. When that happens, I suggest talking to Patricia.

Patricia is not a human character in Tears of the Kingdom. She's a sand seal, and Riju's personal sand seal at that. After cleaning up the main quest in Gerudo, you will find her in the southern corner of Gerudo town.

Patricia loves to eat and will share bits of ambiguous wisdom, translated by her handler Padda, when you give Patricia food. Her favorite food, however, is Splash Fruit.

Fortnite Is Getting A New Ranked Mode

1 year 1 month ago

Ranked Play is coming to Fortnite, and it's coming soon. According to a blog post from last Saturday, the team behind Fortnite will implement the new mode in the 24.40 update, introducing eight main ranks players can progress through. If Epic keeps to their usual schedule, the mode is expected to come this week, but a date has yet to be formally announced.

Once Ranked Play is added to the game, players will be able to toggle it on or off from the main menu. Other than the fact that it's generally more competitive, there aren't any major gameplay differences between Ranked and unranked play, though that's subject to change. In fact, most details about Ranked Play are not concrete, as Epic says this mode is going to be the start of Ranked Season Zero, so they can "make any adjustments to issues and concerns that arise, while also working on additional features and overall improvements for when Ranked starts following the normal Battle Royale Season schedule."

Humanity Review

1 year 1 month ago

After about 20 hours of guiding hundreds of thousands of these weird little dudes through more imaginative puzzles than I can count, I’m left with childlike joy and at least a little bit more confidence in my problem-solving skills than I had when I started playing Humanity. Each of its maps is simple enough to be solved in about 10 to 20 minutes, yet they never stop toying with elements of platformers, dipping into real-time strategy, stealth-action, and even arcade shooting at times. Its puzzling possibilities are as limitless as its endless swarms of human minions, and thanks to its extensive yet effortlessly simple Stage Creator, it verges on Little Big Planet levels of open-endedness that will inevitably keep me coming back for months, if not years.

Let’s back up just a second and explain exactly what Humanity is. It’s a puzzle game from the minds behind Tetris Effect and Rez at Enhance Games, which explains why it’s so bizarre and cool looking. You play as a ghostly Shiba Inu with the power to make humans do your bidding, and the goal is basically to guide your followers through each map, usually doing stuff like manipulating time and physics to clear a suitable path. No, the thin story doesn’t make any sense – it’s not a big focus, just like in Rez. But Humanity does loosely point to some interesting metaphors about human nature, and this somehow works to explain some of its wildest moments. …Don’t ask about that one. You kinda have to play it for yourself to make the pieces fit.

Interview: Amazon Games' CEO on How the Reborn Lord of the Rings MMO Will Learn from New World

1 year 1 month ago

The last four years have been a long road for Christoph Hartmann. Since becoming Amazon Games CEO in late 2018, he has been witness to cancellations, layoffs, and rumors of internal clashes. In late 2021, the publisher was forced to cancel its Lord of the Rings MMO due to rights issues with Tencent.

Fast-forward to 2023, and Amazon Games mostly seems to be on the upswing. Lost Ark enjoyed a successful launch in 2022, a new Tomb Raider game is in development, and Amazon Games has struck publishing deals with numerous developers based primarily in Asia. Even Lord of the Rings is back from the dead, with Amazon announcing today that it has struck a deal with Embracer Group to fully reboot the nascent MMO in what Hartmann claims is the publisher's most ambitious project to date.

“This is a completely new game because the license is much, much wider... Obviously, there's nothing changing because we all know the world is set, the characters are set. It's really the freedom we have in terms of gameplay features where now anything is possible and the limitation is where it's technically possible or not," Hartmann says. "Before, it was like, 'It's a good idea but we can't do it because there's something else going on.' Now, the mission we are on, and the mission Embracer fully supports, Middle-earth Enterprises, fully supports, is to make the biggest best MMO out there based on Lord of the Rings. That's our ambition."

Tears of the Kingdom Players Won't Stop Tormenting Koroks

1 year 1 month ago

Players have taken to social media to showcase the weird and horrifying ways they are tormenting Koroks in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

The latest instalment in The Legend of Zelda franchise brought with it a range of exciting new abilities including Ultrahand, the godlike power that allows players to build all manner of creations.

No doubt Eiji Aonuma felt a sense of excited optimism when directing his team to implement the new gameplay mechanics. After all, Breath of the Wild had shown that the Zelda community was incredibly inventive when it came to bending the game to their will. Who could foresee what they would do with this new generation of powerful tools at their disposal?

What Aonuma probably didn’t foresee was the tidal wave of shenanigans unleashed by the decision to make some members of the Korok community grabbable with the Ultrahand ability. You simply need to check out the Twitter thread above to get a taste of the depravity unfolding accross Hyrule.

Paranormasight's director says making a visual novel is always "messy work"

1 year 1 month ago

Paranormasight: The Seven Mysteries Of Honjo isn’t your average visual novel. There are some buck wild concepts in Square Enix’s game, including fourth wall breaks to manipulate characters' actions and literally muting someone by turning voices off in the options menu, to name just two of the wackier features (and a big plot twist is discussed in this article, so beware if you're planning on playing Paranormasight soon).

At the outset, though, Paranormasight loks like it is your average visual novel, with the player working away to prevent curses from claiming the lives of Tokyo citizens. Writer and director Takaya Ishiyama explains this was actually the starting point for Paranormasight’s inception. “I first decided what the final goal of the game would be, and from there I began to plot out the broad elements I needed to include, such as the Seven Mysteries,” he explains.
