2 years 11 months ago

Hello, everyone. Welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight. I, @zombiepie, am once again honored to your host as we look at another wonderful edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight! It's hard to think, but we have officially started a new month! Video games are starting to come out even though we are slowly but surely transitioning into the season of Summer. People seem to be enjoying Returnal and New Pokémon Snap, and if you are one of them don't forget to share how you feel about the games on the site! Otherwise, it was another quiet week on the site with most people still enamored by Jeff perusing the many items in his garage. With that in mind, let's jump into the site-related housekeeping.

Valorant will start recording voice chat to tackle hate speech

2 years 11 months ago

I played a lot of Valorant in the two weeks after its release and enjoyed myself immensely. Then I got yelled at by a teammate and never played the game again.

Now Riot say they're going to start recording in-game voice comms so they can analyse it and "take action against players who use voice comms to harass others, use hate speech, or otherwise disrupt your experience." They also acknowledge that this will pose a privacy concern for some, but that "if you prefer to not have your voice chat captured, you may turn off voice chat."

How Animal Crossing became a place of protest in China and Hong Kong

2 years 11 months ago

On New Year's Day 2020 I attended a protest march. My friend, a Croatian journalist covering the technology beat for The South China Morning Post, and I, a visitor passing through, left her apartment around noon. Following a fortifying meal of phở we joined the thousands thronging the streets of Wanchai, on the central island of Hong Kong.

Many of the protestors were dressed in black. It was even a family affair for some, with three generations turning up for the march. In Cantonese they chanted, "Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our era!" It was a chorus sung by all, but most vocally by the young. They were creative: on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day hundreds had occupied malls and shopping areas, with many wearing reindeer antlers. In November, university campuses had transformed into fortresses with the student protestors using tables and umbrellas as bulwarks.

The protests also spilled over, expansively, into the digital realm.

Why is it so hard to get a good Godzilla game?

2 years 11 months ago

As a sheltered and awkward child growing up, I really have to hand it to my childhood friend Tristan. Our friendship was always tricky (he was my best friend, but I wasn’t his), but growing up, he helped me come out of my shell. He also introduced me to so many of the things I love today, like ham and cheese Hot Pockets, orange soda, potato chips on sandwiches, Super Smash Bros., and a giant beast known as Godzilla.

My first exposure to that radioactive lizard was over at his house, watching Godzilla 1985. The American cut, not the superior, Raymond Burr-less The Return of Godzilla on which it’s based. We didn’t know any better at the time. We just saw a giant lizard stomping shit, and it was the coolest thing ever. There would be many weekend sleepovers with VHS-dubs of all the classics, watching Godzilla fight everybody from the Thing to the Smog Monster to Mechagodzilla.

Microsoft Documents Reveal a Plan to Increase Revenue Share by 18% for Xbox Devs

2 years 11 months ago
According to confidential documents, Microsoft was planning to reduce its 30% revenue share for Xbox Store games by 18%, moving the split between the developers and itself from 70/30 to 88/12. As reported by The Verge, these documents were filed for the upcoming Epic Games vs. Apple case in January 2021 and state that "all games will move to 88/12 in CY21." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/10/08/valves-30-cut-is-actually-the-industry-standard"] Also stated on the same page is the already announced news that Microsoft will be increasing the revenue share of PC games on the Microsoft Store by the same 18% on August 1, 2021. This would be a significant move for the console games industry as Xbox, Nintendo, and Sony currently all have a revenue share split of 70/30. Microsoft's move on the PC side has put it in line with Epic Games' 88/12 split and moved it away from the 70/30 split that Steam still uses.

Battlefield 6 Images Allegedly Leak Ahead of Official Reveal

2 years 11 months ago
Images from Battlefield 6 have allegedly been leaked ahead of the game's official reveal, and they showcase big storms, a rocket ship, helicopters, beaches, and more. As reported by VGC, these images, which you can see here and here as AI upscaled versions, were posted on social media and give a possible glimpse at the upcoming Battlefield title that has the biggest team in the series' history. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/06/18/dragon-age-and-battlefield-tech-teaser-ea-play-2020"] Tom Henderson, who has published multiple Battlefield 6 reports in the past, has confirmed that these images are in fact real. Furthermore, they match with sketches Henderson drew of these scenes in April that were from a teaser trailer set be released at some point in the future. "I'm not going to RT or share for obvious reasons... But yes, the 2 #BATTLEFIELD images that have been leaked in the past hour are real," Henderson wrote. "I'm not sure why the leaker has decided to capture the exact same shots (although the heli shot is a few frames out) but the screen grabs where likely captured via zoom or something like that - Which explains the low quality.

ESA Releases Statement Regarding Konami's Decision To Back Out Of E3 2021

2 years 11 months ago

Previously, Konami confirmed that it has "a number of key projects" in the works to share with fans, but the company has opted to join EA, Sony, and more in the decision to skip out on E3 2021. Following the confirmation of another company missing from the now-digital showcase (due to COVID-19), the ESA has issued its own statement.

"Due to timing, we will not be ready to present at E3 this year," reads the initial statement from Konami. "We want to reassure our fans that we are in deep development on a number of key projects, so please stay tuned for some updates in the coming months. While we are not participating this year, we have great respect for the ESA and we know that 2021 will be a great success. We will continue to support the ESA and wish the best to all participant's in this year's show."

The real Sonya Blade wants a new game, might pass on a movie

2 years 11 months ago

A couple of weeks ago, I cold-called Kerri Ann Hoskins, famous for her roles in Mortal Kombat 3 and Aerosmith's Revolution X, to see if she wanted to do an interview for one of my podcasts. A week or so later, she said "Sure." She didn't even ask what it was for! That "who gives a f*ck let's just do it" attitude is a big part of who she is, and I am so grateful for it.

In just under 25 minutes, she gave an amazing overview of some of the highs and lows of her life and career. I had planned to chat with her for 5 minutes about whether she wanted to play Sonya again and a couple of other light topics, but then a half-hour later, she was still talking about growing up with a step-father with wartime PTSD, the mesh implanted in her bellybutton, being pregnant with twins while playing the pinup girl villain in the Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, and a lot of other parts of her life that make Sonya's struggles in the games look lightweight in comparison. In fact, while we were talking, you may see her check her phone a few times to check to see if her twins had contracted COVID-19. I was amazed that she was willing to take the time to talk to me in the midst of this potential crisis, but as I soon discovered, pushing through difficult times has been her way of life for as long as she can remember.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition's First Patch Is Bigger Than Each Mass Effect

2 years 11 months ago
Mass Effect Legendary Edition is set to be released in just a couple weeks, and a possible day one patch has just appeared on PlayStation servers that is bigger than the individual file sizes of Mass Effect 1, 2, and 3. As reported by Twisted Voxel, this patch appeared on OrbisPatches.com and includes improvements to performance, stability, Ambient Occlusion (AO), and lighting (both visual and performance-related). It also fixes crashes and "miscellaneous content." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/02/02/mass-effect-legendary-edition-official-trailer"] At 11.8 GB, this patch is bigger than the base game of the original Mass Effect's 6.83 GB, Mass Effect 2's 9.25 GB and Mass Effect 3's 10.60 GB. It is not, however, bigger than Cyberpunk 2077's Day Zero and Day One patches that came in at 43 GB and 28 GB, respectively. Things have obviously changed since 2007 when the original Mass Effect was released, and the advancements in technology and resolution also come with a higher required file size.
