Among Us to Add New Map, Accounts System and More

3 years 6 months ago
Innersloth has pushed an update to Among Us and outlined a small roadmap for future content, with a new map, an account system and colourblind support on the way. A new developer blog post on the Among Us news hub over on Steam mentions that Innersloth is working on an account system, set to arrive as early as December, which will let players report toxic or hacking accounts, with friend lists to follow after that. The team is also hard at work on a free new map, which is apparently bigger than Polus and features brand new task types, is themed after Henry Stickmin, and will be free to all players. Professional translations into multiple languages are also in the pipeline, as well as full-blown colourblind support. The latest update has brought bug fixes and anonymous voting to the game, which marks every vote as grey to obscure voting intention and make ejections even more mysterious. Taskbar modifiers have also been added to the Among Us options, with Meeting mode making it so the taskbar only updates during a meeting, or Invisible mode, which removes the taskbar entirely. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=among-us-screenshots&captions=true"] Innersloth also mentioned that it's working on dealing with cheating and hacking in the game. "Some cheats still work and now there are bugs too. There will be more server updates to fix all of this, but rushing anti-hacks is what caused the bugs, so cleaning things up is a slower process. Also rest assured that any threats made in the game are false and your devices and data are safe. If you see a hacker, ban them or find a different room," the blog reads. Interested in the Among Us phenomenon?

NBA 2K21 Turns the Neighborhood Into an Entire City for Next-Gen

3 years 6 months ago

Fans have been waiting for news about new online MyPlayer modes. 2K recently provided details on gameplay changes, a WNBA MyPlayer, and player customization. Today, they’ve revealed that the Neighborhood is becoming a whole city in the next-gen versions of NBA 2K21.

The simple naming hasn’t changed, with the new location being called “The City”. The City contains multiple neighborhoods that players can join, much like the separate Parks last seen in NBA 2K17.

The City contains four boroughs with mayors, and even rival affiliations. Those affiliations are as follows:

  • North Side Knights
  • South City Vipers
  • Beasts of the East
  • Western Wildcats

The trailer also shows that the next-gen NBA 2K21 City will contain a ridiculous amount of courts to play on. These include themed courts as usual, as well as rental courts, a Kobe-themed Black Mamba court, and a skyscraper with different courts on each floor.

The Pro-Am and Training Facility still exist, but so do a few new locations, including Jordan and Converse brand stores.

Check out the trailer below to get a good look at the new online city that’ll be coming to next-gen versions of NBA 2K21:

NBA 2K21 Introduces The City, A New Multiplayer Experience For New-Gen Consoles

3 years 6 months ago

Click to watch embedded media

With the imminent launch of NBA 2K21 for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, Visual Concepts and 2K Games hasn't held back on the reveals, providing insight into the improved gameplay, enhanced A.I., and new WNBA experience "The W."  Visual Concepts didn't stop there with the upgrades, pulling back the curtain today on "The City," which is the largest multiplayer environment in 2K History.

The City is an evolution from The Neighborhood, which fans will remember was preceded by The Park, but the goal has always been the same: To bring together a virtual basketball community. "Imagine a map that is many, many times larger than previous Neighborhoods," writes executive producer Erick Boenisch in the most recent Courtside Report. "A design that resembles a modern metropolis, complete with towering skyscrapers, sprawling plazas, and a city center. Oh, and it houses four distinct boroughs that are controlled by four rival Affiliations. And with that, I’m incredibly proud to announce that Affiliations are BACK!"

Blizzard clamps down on World of Warcraft multi-boxing

3 years 6 months ago

Blizzard is clamping down on World of Warcraft multi-boxing.

Multi-boxing is a controversial method of farming online video games for resources that involves one user playing multiple accounts simultaneously. Blizzard is clamping down on one particular method of multi-boxing: using third-party software to "broadcast" your inputs across multiple clients. This key cloning software automatically mirrors a single keystroke or action across multiple versions of an MMO, thus letting the user gather materials and in-game gold at a game-breaking pace.

Players have used third-party software to multi-box in World of Warcraft for years, seemingly within the game's Terms of Service. All that has changed now, though. In a post on the World of Warcraft website, seemingly proclaimed by a watchful Malfurion from upon high, Blizzard announced its upcoming clampdown on third-party input broadcasting software.

Ghostrunner cuts a path onto Nintendo Switch November 10

3 years 6 months ago

Co-publishers 505 Games and All In! have announced that cyberpunk hack 'n' slash adventure Ghostrunner will be slicing 'n' dicing on Nintendo Switch on November 10, following its release just last week on PS4, PC, and Xbox One.

Ghostrunner tells the story of a highly skilled but amnesiac young warrior who awakens at the base of a mega structure known as Dharma Tower. Seemingly the last remaining example of an experiment to create an army of unbeatable soldiers, our protagonist must climb Dharma Tower in order to face off against the mysterious "Keymaster" who runs the stacked metropolis with an iron fist. You know Dredd? Kinda like that.

Equipped with highly tuned senses and multitude of acrobatic and deadly skills, players guide the Ghostrunner in a vertically climbing war against an army of underlings. Both the Ghostrunner and his prey are defeated in a single hit, so be sure to use every technique at your disposal in order to reach the summit of Dharma Tower and face destiny.

You can check out our own Anthony Marzano's glittering review right here.

Ghostrunner launches on Nintendo Switch November 10. Players purchasing the game in the first month of release will unlock two exclusive in-game swords.

Sega's parent company sells off majority of its physical entertainment business

3 years 6 months ago

Sega Sammy Holdings has announced that they are jettisoning off 85.1% of their entertainment business shares to the Japanese mega-corporation GENDA: retaining the other 14.9%. What does this mean for Sega/Atlus videogames? Absolutely nothing for now, as it's more of a broad strokes picture of what's going on at Sega as a whole.

As most of you know, Sega merged with pachinko magnate Sammy in the mid-2000s, in a bid to takeover both the home and retail entertainment markets. It was a good arrangement for a time, but given the current outlook of physical gaming spaces for the near future, something needed to change.

According to an official statement, Sega Sammy plans on transferring most of their physical business to GENDA, which will help that department remain solvent. Naturally, savvy businessmen have their sights on low-cost investments that could grow exponentially in a post-pandemic world: whenever that may be.

Again, what does this have to do with games?! Well, the pachislot industry is certainly gaming, or gaming-adjacent, but this deal impacts Sega as a whole. Although their physical entertainment industry is the only space impacted here, it could help ensure that Sega Sammy doesn't have to make any cuts for existing studios. The future is uncertain, but it seems like Sega Sammy had no real choice here other than to find a buyer.

The corporation even explains it in their own words, noting that the "utilization of facilities has declined remarkably, and a significant loss was recorded at 1Q of the fiscal year ending March 2021."

Spelunky 2 patch tweaks the Olmec boss fight

3 years 6 months ago

A screenshtot of Olmec, one of the bosses from Spelunky 2.

It’s no secret that Spelunky 2 is pretty difficult – heck, just read one of Graham’s many Daily Deaths to get an idea of why. It’s good, then, that the roguelike platformer’s latest patch has made it so players die a little less frequently, by making it harder for physics to crush you. Not everything in this update is designed to help you out, though, because the biggest tweaks might actually make the Olmec boss fight a bit harder.

Bethesda Is Interested In More Multiplayer Games After Fallout 76, But Its Approach Needs To Change

3 years 6 months ago

To say that the Fallout 76 launch and the subsequent year was messy would be a massive understatement. While not the company's first multiplayer game, it was a first for the Fallout franchise. After numerous changes and a major overhaul, the Fallout 76 community is active and the overall reception has been positive. Director Todd Howard said recently that despite the long road to get to that point, the experience has been a good one and that the studio is looking into exploring even more multiplayer options.

During the recent Developer: Brighton Conference with GameIndustry.biz, Howard revealed that the team knows they made some colossal mistakes when marketing Fallout 76 and with the launch itself. Given how much the public opinion has shifted in a positive light for the game shows that the team has learned from those mistakes, but will that stop them from making similar missteps in the future? According to Howard, the way to avoid that is to completely change their approach to multiplayer as to avoid another Fallout 76 debacle.

Star Renegades Is Coming To Console On November 19

3 years 6 months ago

Roguelike sci-fi tactical RPG Star Renegades is coming to consoles soon. You can pick it up on Xbox One and Switch on November 19, or PlayStation 4 on November 25. I reviewed the game when it hit PC, and enjoyed it quite a bit, especially the art style. Check out the full review here.

If you're curious as to how it plays, it's a roguelike with a dimension-hopping conceit where you have to time your abilities in sequence in order to interrupt opponents, land critical hits, and stay alive. While you can make it through some of the regular battles without embracing the mechanics, bosses will tear you apart unless you master the time line. There are some unlocks like new characters you can take with you from run to run but it leans closer to a traditional roguelike than a progression-based roguelite. Check out the spiffy new trailer below!

Commandos 2 remaster heading to Switch in December

3 years 6 months ago

Kalypso Media's remaster of developer Pyro Studios' much-loved WW2 real-time stealth-tactics classic Commandos 2 will be coming to Switch on 4th December.

Commandos 2 - HD Remaster, as Kalypso's spruce-up is officially known, initially released for PC in January, before making its way to Xbox One and PS4 in September. The core of the experience, as you'd hope, remains largely identical to Pyro Studios' notoriously challenging 2001 original, tasking players with leading a small team of WW2 soldiers - each with its own speciality, from sniper to demolitions expert - across a series of isometric stages in order to complete various open-ended sabotage and assassination missions.

Kalypso's remaster effort introduced the likes of graphical enhancements, reworked controls, a modernised UI, and an improved tutorial on PC, but was roundly criticised for removing key features - from multiple view panes to Commandos 2's entire multiplayer mode - while adding in an absolute mountain of bugs and performance issues at launch.

This OutRun Arcade1Up cabinet makes me think I need to get a bigger apartment

3 years 6 months ago

Even though I was rarely good at them, one of the great joys of going to the arcade back in the '90s was taking a seat in one of the many racing games and putting the pedal to the metal. Games like Crusin' USA, Daytona USA, and Hydro Thunder devoured many of my quarters on these trips. I would have unloaded many more into OutRun, but sadly, my local arcade only had the upright version of the cabinet.

I guess now is my chance to play the game in a way I never got to with the OutRun cabinet from Arcade1Up. This is the first seated racing cabinet from the company and it includes the Sega arcade classic along with Turbo OutRun, OutRunners, and Power Drift. The cabinet features a 17" LCD screen, steering wheel, gas pedal, brake, and dual speakers.

BlizzCon Online won't have a premium watch fee, Blizzard says

3 years 6 months ago

BlizzCon Online is slated to stream on February 19-20: a format that Blizzard can easily control the messaging for and be shielded from potential "boos" from the audience.

But unlike previous shows, there will not be a "premium pass" or anything of the sort that's required for full access. Instead, on a recent "2020 Blizzard Fireside Chat" video, Blizzard president J. Allen Brack confirms that the event will be completely free. Brack is fairly plain in his statement in the first minute of the below clip, noting: "We wanted it to be a big virtual celebration, so BlizzCon Online will be free to watch and engage in."

There are a lot of unknowns and some relatively "given" announcements coming here. Hearthstone and Heroes of the Storm will probably get expansion and hero reveals respectively. World of Warcraft will likely dish out more details on what's coming next for the Shadowlands expansion, due out this month. Starcraft II, now in maintenance mode, could be done for good when it comes to new reveals.

But the rest is shrouded in mystery. What about Diablo 4 news? How substantial will that update be? Or more importantly, what even is Overwatch 2 at this point? Will Blizzard walk back the idea of forcing people to pony up for a sequel and integrate it into Overwatch proper? Could we see a new game?

Lots of questions! Although the fiery hype for BlizzCon has had setbacks over the years, I'm sure a lot of people will be tuning in to see what happens regardless.

Here's a list of Pokemon that still aren't in Sword and Shield yet, after the DLC

3 years 6 months ago

Pokemon Sword and Shield is seemingly done with DLC. Now, there's a chance Game Freak could announce an additional expansion or even a second season pass, Gearbox style, but at the moment, this might be the "complete" edition of Sword and Shield.

The Crown Tundra add-on introduced a ton of legacy Pokemon into the game (as well as a few new ones), but there is still a large amount of creatures that just simply are not supported. As in, you cannot find them out in the game world (or in either expansion) and they can't be transferred in.

According to Serebii.net, there are exactly 234 Pokemon that still have not made the cut. You can check out a full list here, which includes a host of Generation 1 characters and several starters like Chikorita. At the time of publication, the current grand total of all Pokemon across all games is 898: the list ends with Calyrax, the new Crown Tundra legendary. With a new generation, that number could break 1,000.

In spite of its issues, I enjoyed my time with Sword and Shield well enough. But if Game Freak never adds the ability to recoup most (if not all) of these Pokemon, it'll likely be forever-talked-about in the community. Game Freak has the opportunity to turn the conversation around on this, but I don't know if they will.
