Doom Eternal is half price on Switch and the eShop also has Bethesda, WB, and Activision sales

3 years 1 month ago

Doom Eternal is half price ($29.99) on the Nintendo Switch eShop, and that's a solid deal.

Panic Button's well-liked Switch port of Doom Eternal only released digitally, and it's still relatively recent compared to the older PC and other console versions that came out first, so for anyone considering waiting on a "good deal," this is likely your best opportunity for a good long while.

For a tech analysis, I'd turn to Digital Foundry. The Switch edition looks blurry even when you aren't stacking it up side-by-side, but it plays well, and it's a "near locked 30 frames per second experience" in docked play. As for those pesky Marauders, I can't help you there – you're gonna have to practice.

While I'd say Doom Eternal is the focal point here, a few other notable eShop sales are running right now that you can peruse all at once over on Nintendo's sales and deals page. For once, it's not too cramped.

Bethesda has the wider Doom and Wolfenstein series on sale. Everything is half price, which works out pretty well for the classic Doom titles, but not so much for Skyrim, which is still charging $29.99.

Outriders is going through some some launch server woes

3 years 1 month ago

Outriders went live yesterday, and it seems like a lot of people are hopping on, because the servers are having some trouble keeping up. Players are reporting disconnections and troubles staying logged into servers.

Over on the Outriders subreddit and on social media, users have been posting pictures of the start screen. Developer People Can Fly has been openly addressing it though, posting updates on the Outriders Twitter page.

In a statement, studio head Sebastian Wojciechowski says that Square Enix is working to fix the server issues as soon as possible.

"As developers, who've been working super hard for the last five years to make this game awesome, we really hope that you will judge the game rather than those teething troubles related to server issues," said Wojciechowski. "It is frustrating for you and it is frustrating for us."

Why You Should Rewatch Your Favorite Movies in Black and White

3 years 1 month ago

Cinema snobs the world over scoffed when polarizing director Zack Snyder announced that his indulgent superhero opus Zack Snyder’s Justice League would be re-rereleased in a desaturated black and white version he’d dubbed Zack Snyder’s Justice League: Justice Is Gray. I was among them, but mostly because Snyder’s…

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga would hit the spot right about now, but it was delayed out of spring

3 years 1 month ago

Well, shoot – another delay. And not necessarily a game I expected to be pushed back again.

TT Games planned to wrap up LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga by spring 2021, but as of today, the self-proclaimed "biggest and best-ever LEGO game" won't make that release window.

The developers noted on Twitter that they simply "need more time" but stopped short of sharing a revised target. We'll hear more about the "updated launch timing as soon as possible."

Platinum Games’ Stylish Action Game World of Demons Releases On Apple Arcade

3 years 1 month ago

You’d be forgiven if you forgot all about World of Demons. Platinum Games announced the mobile action game back in 2018, and guess what? It’s suddenly available now exclusively on Apple Arcade.

Do you like stylish action games with pretty art directions? World of Demons might be up your alley. The game’s aesthetic harkens titles like Okami in that it rocks a gorgeous, watercolor art inspired by ukiyo-e woodblock prints.

Players control a samurai who leads an army of yokai, demons in Japanese folklore, on a mission to take down the evil lord of oni, Shuten Doji. Along the way players will recruit additional yokai and samurai to their cause, each bringing new abilities. Because it’s a Platinum joint, the game’s action is fast, fluid, and over-the-top, and you can play using a controller or with virtual inputs on the touchscreen. Check out the game’s launch trailer for a look at the gorgeous title in action.

Fantasian, World of Demons, and a bunch of other games hit Apple Arcade today

3 years 1 month ago

Fantasian, the new dioramic RPG from Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, launched on Apple Arcade. But as it turns out, that wasn't the only game coming to the service.

Apple announced today that over 30 games are coming to the subscription gaming service, spread across new games and old classics. Alongside the new originals, Apple launched two new categories: Timeless Classics and App Store Greats.

The Classics section has some longtime standards: a chess and backgammon app, for example, as well as the pretty solid Good Sudoku by Zach Gage. App Store Greats, meanwhile, holds a number of mobile classics ad-free and fully unlocked, including Fruit Ninja Classic, Mini Metro, and Threes!, which is responsible for a lot of lost hours for me, personally.

A big surprise is PlatinumGames' World of Demons, the action mobile game first shown back in 2018 that later quietly disappeared has snuck onto the Apple Arcade list. It's got some really striking, Okami-esque visuals for its tale of samurai and yokai.

Exclusive Axiom Verge 2 Preview – Two Worlds Converge

3 years 1 month ago

If you like Metroid, you’re in luck. Over the years, countless games have taken inspiration from Nintendo’s classic series, giving gamers an abundance of ways to explore connected maps, earn upgrades, and unearth secret items. But of all the projects that contain traces of Metroid DNA, 2015’s Axiom Verge came the closest to reconstructing it. The original Axiom Verge had a retro aesthetic, a lonely atmosphere, and an array of clever abilities that made the mysterious world a joy to traverse.

However Axiom Verge wasn’t a mere imitator; it built on a solid foundation with its own signature elements. A heady sci-fi story and mind-bending meta elements put a contemporary twist on the familiar formula – and with Axiom Verge 2, players are about to learn even more about this series’ unique identity. After five years of work by solo developer Tom Happ, this prequel/sequel hybrid is almost done, and I played the first few hours of an alpha version to see how the Axiom Verge universe is evolving.

As reported by CBC.ca, Calgary's union for film and stage technicians - the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE 212) - also confirms that the series is set to begin production this July. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/03/20/the-last-of-us-hbo-series-will-cover-the-first-game"] The Last of Us HBO series will star The Mandalorian's Pedro Pascal as Joel and Game of Thrones' Bella Ramsey as Ellie. The first season is said to adapt much from the original game from 2013, but some episodes will "deviate greatly" from its events. This series based on The Last of Us will be written and produced by Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann and Chernobyl's Craig Mazin. World of Demons Preview: Bringing Classic PlatinumGames Design to Mobile

3 years 1 month ago
World of Demons is an Apple Arcade exclusive title from one of the world’s finest developers of action games: PlatinumGames. After beating the first chapter of this title, which had a surprise release today, I’m already intrigued by its setting and art design, which lean heavily on traditional Japanese folklore, as well as its surprisingly complex gameplay mechanics. It stands out as a must-play title on Apple’s gaming service, and more than justifies the cost of a month’s subscription if you're not a member already. The story follows the trials of Onimaru, a samurai antihero with a dark past, as he battles to save the world from destruction at the hands of demon king Shuten Doji. This fearsome oni (demon) has cast his evil influence over the yokai, a collection of curious creatures based on real-life Japanese legends, and tasked them with impeding Onimaru’s valiant efforts. Along his journey, Onimaru must defeat and then recruit over 100 varieties of yokai and expand his party of samurai, gleaning clues from each major encounter that lead him ever onward through ancient Japan and otherworldly realms in pursuit of Shuten Doji. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/04/02/world-of-demons-24-minutes-of-gameplay"] In gameplay terms, this is a PlatinumGames experience through and through. Onimaru and other playable characters deploy an ever-expanding collection of extravagant combos, while your performance in each skirmish is graded on the usual Platinum scale, encouraging you to improve your skills and chase those S-rank scores. And while it is fairly easy to pick up and play – and quickly makes you feel like a badass – World of Demons can be punishing on its advanced difficulty. Basic attacks and combos are mapped to a single button on screen or on a controller, depending on whether you choose to play on iOS (which supports both touch and controller input), Apple TV or Mac OS.

When's the last time you splurged on games?

3 years 1 month ago

I may have accidentally gotten back into collecting Super Nintendo games. Yeah, let's go with "may."

As many of you have no doubt experienced first-hand, it's been an expensive time for collectors from all walks of life. For anyone looking to lighten their loads, there's an opportunity to strategically cash out, especially when it comes to even vaguely "rare" games, trading cards, and other nostalgia-inducers.

For some buyers – those unfortunate souls who lack enough patience to wait for prices to maybe one day settle into something approaching normal times – it's been a trip. I don't know why my brain decided I should rekindle my SNES love all of a sudden, but it did, and I'm trying not to overdo it.

Recently, that meant a few nights of impulse buying spread across eBay – yeah, eBay! I haven't used it in over a decade! – and a trusted local game store with accurate online listings and high-quality photos.

For now, I've been focusing on the carts I never personally had as a kid – within reason. So, more along the lines of repeat rentals, games I enjoyed at friends' houses, and cool stuff I read about in magazines, not so much "obscure gems people overlooked in the '90s that are now obscenely expensive."

Xbox to Make Xbox Series X Mini Fridges After Winning A Twitter Competition

3 years 1 month ago
Xbox has won Twitter's first-ever #BestOfTweet Brand Bracket Championship and, after a promise from Xbox's Aaron Greenberg, will be making Xbox Series X Mini Fridges for the public. Xbox was in a tough fight with Skittles in this championship battle, and won by only 1% after 341,731 votes. When it was coming down to the wire, Greenberg tried to rally Xbox fans by saying the company would make real Xbox Series X Mini Fridges if Xbox won. Xbox This is another chapter in the Xbox Series X Fridge saga that began when Microsoft, perhaps in a nod to those like Niko Partners' Daniel Ahmad and an example of why it won this contest, compared the size of its next-gen console to a refrigerator. It didn't end there, as Microsoft sent Snoop Dogg and iJustine an Xbox Series X Fridge and held an Xbox Series X Fridge sweepstakes that gave fans a chance to win one of these glorious kitchen appliances inspired by the Xbox Series X.
