Fall Guys is getting a Sonic skin so I am requesting a Kiryu costume

3 years 7 months ago

As it was foretold by the dataminers, now it shall come to pass. Bouncy bean competition game Fall Guys is getting a Sonic The Hedgehog costume later this week. It’s the latest of several game series crossovers that have made it into the game as unlockable skins. Now that Sega is at the table, I have a humble suggestion for a couple other characters that are great at silly fisticuffs.

Here are Sea Of Thieves' awkward school photos from before it became beautiful

Catch the moustaches on those lads! Believe it or not, this is what extremely gorgeous pirate adventure Sea Of Thieves looked like in its awkward adolescent phase. Epic can continue to support Unreal Engine on Mac and iOS for now

3 years 7 months ago

Fortnite's Battle Bus, with players jumping out.

While Epic and Apple’s legal battle over app stores isn’t due in court until next year, one important matter is settled for now: Epic will get the keep the Apple developer accounts which let them update and maintain Unreal Engine on Mac and iOS. Apple had threatened to disable those too, not just the accounts Epic use for Fortnite, until a judge approved Epic’s appeal for a temporary restraining order. That’s now settled for longer thanks to a preliminary injunction issued on Friday. But the judge also held firm in her decision not to force Apple to let Fortnite back on iThings. Everyone’s a winner, everyone’s a loser.

Yakuza: Like A Dragon crashes into RPG territory, but is all the better for it

3 years 7 months ago

Ichiban Kasugo calling in support from the skies mid-battle.

It was when I drank baby milk with a bunch of half-naked yakuza in diapers that I really knew I was back in a Yakuza game. I noted an edge of disbelief in my voice as my laughter echoed across the room. But mixed in with my cackle was genuine warmth, too. It was good to be back.

As a long time fan of Sega’s action adventure beat ‘em up series, I was lucky enough to give Yakuza: Like A Dragon a whirl for a few hours of preview, and it made me grin like a happy baby throughout – like those diaper-wearing yakuza, I suppose. Even if you’re unfamiliar with the series it’ll likely elicit a similar reaction, because you don’t need to be clued in on any previous happenings to enjoy it. Like A Dragon does retain all the best quirks from its past, and builds on them, too. But make no mistake: it isn’t afraid to tear the foundations down and start anew.

This handy browser extension warns you if a Steam game is also in the Xbox Game Pass for PC

3 years 7 months ago

In the land of subscription game libraries, the Xbox Game Pass for PC is a pretty great deal, but keeping track of what’s in or out of the library at any one time can be a bit of a headache. You don’t want to go buying that brand new game if you’ve already got it by way of your monthly fee, right? Or not on accident, anyway. Here’s a handy little browser extension that will warn you when you’re looking at a game on Steam that’s already in the Game Pass for PC.

Magical troublemakers are on the loose in turn-based RPG Ikenfell

3 years 7 months ago

Ikenfell

is a turn-based RPG all about a rag-tag group of pals discovering the secrets of their school for witches and wizards, and it’s out right now. So often games make us play as the legendary hero or the most popular kid in school, but not Ikenfell. This has you play as her sister, after the most popular kid goes missing.

Best Crusader Kings 3 mods

3 years 7 months ago

Six weeks after the release of Crusader Kings 3, and there are already over 1200 mods, tweaks, and more to download. Paradox’s grand soap opera is as much fun to fix as it is to play, it seems.

A lot of the more extensive mods are still heavily in development, so I’ve steered clear of most total conversions (aside from one that I couldn’t not highlight) and stuck to more general upgrades and rules for your kings and queens.

Hades weapon Aspects weren't originally going to be in the game

3 years 7 months ago

In Supergiant’s new brilliant roguelike Hades, you’re able to choose between six weapons (or Infernal Arms) to use to battle your way out of the underworld. Each of these then has four different Aspects, which changes the weapons’ movesets and bonuses, allowing for really varied runs.

It turns out, though, that Aspects weren’t originally going to be in the game. One of the game’s developers took to Twitter over the weekend to talk through their development, and even give a little peek at an early iteration of one of the Aspects that didn’t make it to the final game.

Making the most interesting character possible in Baldur's Gate 3

3 years 7 months ago

An example of what you can make while fooling around in the character creator for Baldur's Gate III: a Githyanki (a race of people who are sort of homicidal, slightly lizardy types with tiny noses and green skin) woman with bright purple double ponytail plaits and big blue tattoos over her eyes

Last week, Larian shamed us all because the data indicates we have all been making Generic Boringman in the character creation for their fantasy RPG epic Baldur’s Gate III. Their point is that they have given us access to tails and horns and the sort of eyes that you can only get if you order special custom contacts from the piercings and bong shop down the road. Yet our choices average out to a brownhair cleric boy.

In response, I have tried to make the most interesting character possible, both in terms of character build and lQQk. It was actually quite difficult.

Star Citizen director says Squadron 42 “will be done when it's done”

3 years 7 months ago

How do you celebrate the eighth birthday of an MMO that technically still hasn’t been fully released? Why, you hold a Q&A to let fans know that its singleplayer spin-off is nowhere near coming out either, of course.

Over the weekend, the Star Citizen devs, Cloud Imperium, held a Q&A over on their forums as part of its birthday celebrations. Despite rules on the thread saying fans weren’t allowed to ask about “timelines or schedules”, that is exactly what they did. As it turns out, the story game set in its universe, Squadron 42, is still a long ways off.

Call Of Duty: Warzone's infinite Stims exploit fixed

3 years 7 months ago

Two players in the gas with gas masks on, wielding assault rifles.

Alongside numerous hackers, players in Call Of Duty: Warzone have had to contend with a new exploit which granted infinite healing. How fun! Players who used the Stim item could repeatedly juice up, letting them live in the deadly gas and wait while everyone else blasted each other to death. Good news, though, Infinity Ward have fixed the issue which should mean no more immortal gas dwellers.

Have You Played… Realm Royale?

3 years 7 months ago

A screenshot from Realm Royale which shows a player on horseback charging at two enemies. One fires a shot from behind a barrier with a turret by his side, while the other lurks in the distance with a sniper.

Let’s travel back in time. To the distant year 2018.

We’re at peak Fortnite. Ninja urges a new year’s crowd to floss with him as rain beats down on his sodden bandana. Water seeps into his suit, into every fabric of his being. The flash of his smile is the only source of light, but it’s a bit too bright. He begins flossing. The sound of awkward shuffling blurs with the music. My eyes shatter into a thousand pieces.

During this was also the peak of game studios being like “Battle Royale equals money”, so along came Hi-Rez with Realm Royale. As you’d expect, players drop onto a map, there’s a ‘deadly fog’, yada yada. But you know what? This actually has a few fun twists on an overused formula, so much so, I consider it some of the most fun I’ve ever had with a Battle Royale game.

The Sunday Papers

3 years 7 months ago

Sundays are for– oh no. Sundays are for doing my taxes. Quick, let’s procrastinate with some of the week’s best games writing (and podcasts, and TikToks).

Brendan Caldwell, former features editor and current RPS list goblin, launched a podcast this past week. Hey Lesson! is a podcast about asking smart people stupid questions about videogames. For example, he asks neuroscientist Dr Ofir Turel about piss mushrooms in Death Stranding to figure out why our brains crave ‘likes’, and talks to caver Christine Grosart about animals getting lost in caves a la Spelunky. This is a great idea for a podcast, finely produced, and each episode also has a co-host, including familiar voices like Paul Dean and other former RPSman Matthew Castle. If you like the series, consider supporting Brendan’s work via Patreon.

Puyo Bock holds the secret to naming Star Wars: Squadrons pilots

3 years 7 months ago

Star Wars: Squadrons screenshot.

I’ve never understood Star Wars names. On one hand, you’ve got perfectly normal blokes with names like Luke or Ben, and then someone will stroll on up and deadpan introduce themselves as “Dash Rendar” or “Wedge Antilles”. It’s enough to have you wondering where they come up with these names. In the case of one Star Wars: Squadrons pilot, at least, there’s a good chance the name came from the mind of a comedy writer’s 20-month-old kid.

Autumnal treasure in an illustration from 'Text-book of Geology'

It’s trite but: autumn really has come out of nowhere. A fortnight ago, I walked through a forested glen with a pal and saw barely any non-green leaves, let alone fallen ones. This week, I walked along the local river and kicked through deep drifts of yellow leaves. Seasons.

What are you playing this weekend? Here’s what we’re clicking on!

Your Baldur's Gate 3 character is probably boring, Larian say

3 years 7 months ago

Yup, that’s right. You spent 45 minutes in Baldur’s Gate 3‘s character creator looking at drow and tieflings, considering horns and tails and beards, oh my. Then you said “oh, to hell with it” and made a human Cleric with your own skin and eye color whose face is just a little more attractive than yours. That’s how you’re going to venture forth, is it? Steve Plainface is going to save Baldur’s Gate from mind flayers and date Shadowheart, is he? Yup, he sure will.

Bugsnax releases its weird, unsettling adventure into the wild on November 12

Bugsnax launches on November 12th, which they’ve announced via an uncanny video showcasing their voice cast.

Sam Barlow plans to make a Silent Hill: Shattered Memories-sorta game again

3 years 7 months ago

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories artwork of a frozen girl on a swing.

Sam Barlow, the writer and designer of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, has been muttering about plans to make a follow-up of sorts to the 2009 horror game. Not a sequel nor even a game with ‘Silent Hill’ in the name, but a spiritual successor combining bits of that with lessons he’s learned from making other games and a bit of extra oomph. After Shattered Memories, Barlow found fame with voyeuristic FMV games Her Story and Telling Lies. The non-Silent Hill game is still only an idea, mind, one he’s still pitching. But maybe?

Just how good are AMD's first 4K Big Navi benchmarks compared to the RTX 3080?

AMD also shared some figures for Gears 5 and Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare, but how do these benchmark figures actually stack up against Nvidia’s new [cms-block]? Let’s find out.

Microsoft's “app store principles” sure are taking a big jab at Apple

3 years 7 months ago

Yesterday, Microsoft posted a list of their “10 app store principles”, in what reads like one big passive aggressive jab at Apple. They say these principles are designed to “promote choice and ensure fairness” on their Windows Stores (both mobile and desktop), and they include rules about just generally treating app developers fairly.

These are nice and good principles to stick to, yes. But the entire post doesn’t seem as though it’s really to assure devs, so much as it is to make very clear whose side they’re on in the whole Apple vs Epic debacle.
