Steam Just Shattered its Concurrent Player Record

4 years 1 month ago

Steam, the ever-popular digital PC gaming platform, has just broken its own previous record for most concurrent players.

According to Steam’s own statistics tracker, a peak count of 19,728,027 people were using the service around 7:00 a.m. Saturday morning, a brand new record for the service.

steam users

The previous concurrent user record for Steam was approximately 18,801,944 as of February 2020, making the new record almost a jump of 1 million users.

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/03/14/half-life-2-developers-react-to-50-minute-speedrun"]

Unsurprisingly, this also means that some of Steam’s (and owner Valve’s) most popular games have also set new concurrent players records. Valve’s Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (also known as CS:GO) managed to peak at 1,007,062 players, while DOTA 2 peaked at 694,829. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has peaked at 525,462 players, while Rainbow Six Siege and Grand Theft Auto Online bring up the rear.

It’s unsurprising news, to say the least, considering many people around the globe are practicing a higher level of caution in the wake of the novel coronavirus/COVID-19 outbreak, and likely avoiding public gatherings. That leaves a lot of time to play video games.

13 Times We've Been Truly Evil to NPCs

4 years 1 month ago

For years videogames have encouraged us to make heroic choices and roleplay as an honest protagonist. But what about those times when you just feel a little… cruel? Games such as Bioshock, Fallout, and Infamous give players the choice to play dastardly for different rewards and story experiences, but what about when the only prize you want is the satisfaction of truly destroying a character’s day? We’ve all been there.

With that in mind, here are 13 times we’ve been truly evil to NPCs. Yes, we don’t feel good about this at all…

Watch Dogs 2 - No Escape from Alcatraz

Watch Dogs 2 is loaded with ways to torment NPCs, with many of them involving crippling some of the local’s bank accounts. With the ability to scan any character’s phone and find out their hidden, sordid secrets it's hard not to think some of the San Franciscans deserve it.

However, this insider info can also help you administer justice in a more traditional fashion. In an effort to be an accurate representation of San Francisco, Watch Dogs 2 features an extremely accurate and disturbingly operation-able version of the former prison and now popular tourist trap, Alcatraz. Vicki-Higgs

Alcatraz is swarming with visitors, much like real life. Not quite as authentic is the ability to open and close cells at will, and NPC Vicki Higgs found this out the hard way. It turns out the janitor had an EU arrest warrant, so I didn’t feel too guilty when I managed to position the unsuspecting (but completely deserving) NPC into a life sentence on The Rock.

MLB The Show 20 Review

4 years 2 months ago

Considering the real MLB has recently delayed its 2020 season, MLB The Show 20 literally is the closest you’ll get to real pro baseball for a while. So it’s a good thing it’s great, as usual! That said, this is an annual franchise, and this year’s version isn’t as much of an improvement over last year’s impressive MLB The Show 19 as we’ve seen in big years in the past. But it finally adds some much-desired variety in ways to progress through the excellent Diamond Dynasty card collection mode, expanded customization for its addictive Franchise mode, and further gameplay tweaks to improve what was already one of the best, most dynamic baseball simulations we’ve seen to date.

The Best Resident Evil Bosses Ever

4 years 2 months ago
Memorable encounters with iconic, monstrous bosses have been a core pillar of the Resident Evil series from the beginning. Whether it's the terrifying monstrosities of the Uroboros project or the iconic and unstoppable Tyrants, there are amazing bosses to be found in every game in the franchise. With the remake of Resident Evil 3 in our near future, we thought it was a perfect time to take a look back at the franchise to find the Top 10 Resident Evil bosses. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-best-resident-evil-bosses&captions=true"] Click through the gallery above or scroll down for the full list!

10. Uroboros Test Subject

UroborosTestSubject The Uroboros Test Subject makes it clear that Capcom had cooperative play in mind when making Resident Evil 5. The undulating mass of worms can take an extreme amount of punishment from both players which is satisfying to inflict thanks to the many bits of it that fly off when shot. But what really makes this encounter a standout is the environmental interaction. You’ll need to work as a team to trap the shapeless creature in a furnace, with one player acting as bait inside the forge and the other carefully controlling the doors. Just try not to lock your teammate inside.

9. Yawn

Yawn is the titanic result of T-Virus experimentation on a locally-sourced mountain adder, and the first clue that Resident Evil had much more up its sleeve than just zombies.

Iron Harvest Preview: Real-Time Strategy In an Alternate-History World War 1

4 years 2 months ago
When I saw the first trailer for Iron Harvest, I was instantly intrigued. Its mix of real-life World War 1-era film footage with "diesel punk" mechs was extremely in my wheelhouse. I'm fascinated by the history of WW1, but I also really like alternate-reality universes, especially ones containing smoke-spewing mechs. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/03/13/iron-harvest-1920-tutorial-mission"] Real-time strategy is a genre I enjoy, too, although I haven't gotten too serious about them in the last decade or so. After my time with Iron Harvest at PAX East, I feel confident this game, with its fanciful depiction of a world at war in a universe where mechs are the primary vehicles of battle, is going to sink its hooks into me deeply when it comes out later this year. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=iron-harvest-1920-concept-artwork&captions=true"] If you've played Company of Heroes, you're familiar with the battlefields here. You command your units, level them up, and send them off to battle another day. Resources, whether built or seized, determine how quickly, and how many units, you can build. Its skirmishes are fast-paced and stressful, requiring constant attention to a hundred different things at once. In other words, Iron Harvest is awesome. [poilib element="quoteBox" parameters="excerpt=Its%20skirmishes%20are%20fast-paced%20and%20stressful.%20In%20other%20words%2C%20Iron%20Harvest%20is%20awesome."] One cool mechanic of Iron Harvest is how defeated enemies will drop their weapons on the battlefield, shown as easy-to-spot spinning icons. This means you could wipe out an enemy flamethrower battalion and seize their weapons, converting one of your basic (and cheap) infantry units into a more lethal configuration. This changes how I approached battle.

Baldur's Gate 3's Story Confirmed to Connect to Baldur's Gate 1 & 2

4 years 2 months ago
Baldur's Gate 3 might be a sequel to the beloved RPG series, but it hasn't been entirely clear that it would be a story sequel, and the community has been asking about that ever since announcement. Today, fans got a far more definitive answer, as developer Larian revealed it would feature direct connections to the first game, including returning characters. In a Reddit AMA on r/baldursgate, Larian founder Swen Vincke answered a question asking if the upcoming game's story will follow on from the first two games: "We really don’t want to spoil anything but we wouldn’t call it Baldur’s Gate 3 if there wouldn’t be a link", he explained. "Let me just say that we touch upon the story of [Baldur's Gate] 1 & 2 in meaningful ways, there are returning characters and what happened in BG 1/2/[Throne of Bhaal] leads to what happens into BG3. You won’t necessarily see that at the start of the adventure but you will quickly understand once you get further into the game." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=baldurs-gate-3-gameplay-screenshots&captions=true"] It's proven a very popular answer, with multiple commenters saying it was the best one given in the AMA. While it might seem clear that the third game in a series would follow up on the story of the first two games, the question arose from the Dungeons & Dragons setting it's based on, Forgotten Realms. In the two decades since the last game's release, Forgotten Realms has canonically shifted a century into the future - meaning Baldur's Gate 3 has too. Initially, some wondered whether that meant BG3 would simply share a gameplay style and setting with the original games, but it seems that's not the case.

Dreams Developer Exploring How Creations Could Be Used 'Off PlayStation'

4 years 2 months ago
Dreams developer Media Molecule is looking into ways that Dreams creations can be used for business purposes beyond PS4. In a Dreams update post released Friday, March 13, the developer answered a few questions it's received from the community, one being how players could potentially use their own creations for business purposes. Media Molecule had a lengthy answer for that and it seems the company is working on a way to allow users to use their creations outside of PlayStation. "We've had lots of questions from creators about using Dreams for viable business opportunities off PlayStation such as concept work," the update post reads. "We welcome and encourage creators to do this, but it's new territory for us. We've been busy behind the scenes mapping out how we can make it easier for creators to do this in the future. We are kicking this off with a beta evaluation, where creators can submit an application to use Dreams for a specific project." [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=14-community-creations-made-in-dreams&captions=true"] You can view that beta evaluation here, should you want to apply. The update continues to explain that the evaluation is only available to Early Access Members in "good standing." Media Molecule asks that those who apply have published creations that can be viewed or have a showreel that showcases their work made in dreams viewable to the studio. As far as what kind of projects this evaluation applies to, Media Molecule said basically any Dreams creation, as long as its value 'off PlayStation' is demonstrable. The update post also answered a few other questions regarding original creations in Dreams.

Our Doom Eternal Review Is Coming on Tuesday

4 years 2 months ago
Brace yourselves: IGN's Doom Eternal review, which is currently being composed by our own Ryan McCaffrey, will land on this very website on Tuesday, March 17 at 7am Pacific time, when the embargle lifts. Well, specifically, it'll be our review of the single-player campaign only, because the new 2v1 Battlemode multiplayer won't be switched on until launch on March 20. So our multiplayer-specific review and our final, overall score will follow a couple of days after that, as an ASAP kind of thing. We know: the anticipation is killing us, too. In the meantime, you should absolutely check out our vast library of Doom Eternal gameplay video and previews. Will it make the urge to play it immediately easier to bear? Well... no. Probably worse, actually. But it's a good kind of hurt, you know? And if there's anything you want to know about Doom Eternal, leave your questions below – Ryan won't be able to say a peep until Tuesday but after that, it's all fair game (except spoilers). Black Mesa Review

4 years 2 months ago

Black Mesa is unique in all of gaming history in that it’s a fan-remake of the original 1998 Half-Life that Valve has actually allowed to be sold as its own full game. That’s unheard of! It is unquestionably great to have a way to experience such a seminal first-person shooter with a little less of its 22 years of accumulated dust, and almost all of the liberties taken from the original design feel like improvements. That said, the project was in the works for so long – eight years! – that now that it’s finally been declared "finished" it feels like it’s a prime candidate for its own remake to bring it up to 2020 standards.

As someone who hasn’t replayed Half-Life since Valve ported it to the Source engine (without updating any of the models or textures) back in 2004, playing Black Mesa and fighting off a familiar interdimensional invasion was like putting on some smudged-up rose-colored glasses. Everything looks a lot better than it originally did, for sure... but not as good as I willfully misremembered. Human character models and animations aren’t quite up to the standard Valve set with Half-Life 2 in 2004 (let alone the new bar about to be set in Half-Life: Alyx) and textures are pretty rough in a lot of places. The most jarring thing, though, is the loading screens. Just like in 1998, they too frequently freeze the action as you’re walking down a hallway for around five seconds, even on an SSD. This is an engine limitation the Black Mesa development team at Crowbar Collective likely had no way of working around, but it still makes it feel very old because you just don’t see that kind of thing anymore.

Harry Potter RPG: Leaks, Rumors, and What We Know So Far

4 years 2 months ago

When a video leaked in 2018 of a rumored Harry Potter RPG, fans went into speculation overdrive over what it could possibly be, which developer is behind it, and most importantly – if it’s even real.

From the footage and the supposed leaked synopsis, we know the alleged game is a third-person, open-world RPG that takes place in the 1800’s – well before Harry Potter was born, and even before the Fantastic Beasts series, which takes place in the 1920’s. We previously broke down the possibilities on where the game could fit into the Harry Potter timeline, including potential familiar characters that could make appearances.

[widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-harry-potter-universes-most-fantastic-beasts&captions=true"]

Following the leak, many fans speculated on Reddit, sharing why they thought it had to be real – with some specifically saying the gameplay footage simply “looks too good” and was likely too far along to be fake. At the time, Warner Bros. Entertainment Interactive had all videos of the footage taken down due to "copyright grounds" as described on the original YouTube takedown screen, but the company never made an official statement acknowledging whether such a game was in development. Because there is official Harry Potter music and logos in the video, it's unclear whether Warner Bros. removed it due to copyright infringement or for the fact the game really is in development.

Half-Life: Alyx – We Answer Your Burning Questions

4 years 2 months ago

UPDATE: UPDATE: Valve has confirmed to us that you can now toggle an option that will have Barnacles pull you up. See the Barnacles section below.

[poilib element="accentDivider"]

Our IGN First for Half-Life: Alyx is well underway this month, with new gameplay, some commentary from Valve, and our hands-on preview!

While we've got plenty more to come, last week we asked you to leave the burning questions about Half-Life: Alyx you wanted us to answer based on the four hours Ryan McCaffrey and I have each played. And this week, we've got answers!

We couldn't answer every question as there are still things we can’t reveal just yet (including many story and mechanic-specific details) but here are some of the top suggestions and ones we liked (edited very lightly for clarity), organized by question and answered by me and Ryan.

What’s movement like?

MrBurnsReturns: I'm curious to how you managed to tolerate free movement vs teleport movement? Is it viable to free move through the entire game?

Dipman: Which of the three movement options is the least nauseating? And are there any unavoidable portions of the game that can make you dizzy or lightheaded regardless of which method you're using?

BritBayonet: Did you try different modes of movement? Which ones do you think worked the best? Were head crabs absolutely terrifying?

Every IGN Animal Crossing Review Ever

Animal Crossing has wormed its way into the hearts of millions around the world since it made its debut in Japan on the N64 as Doubutsu no Mori/Animal Forest in 2001. Genshin Impact: The Zelda Clone That's not Really a Zelda Clone

4 years 2 months ago

Though it has been widely accused of being a Breath of the Wild clone, my second hands-on with Genshin Impact was a welcome reminder that Chinese developer miHoYo has plenty of its own ideas to set the game apart.

Sure, the similarities with Zelda are not subtle. While the character design takes a much more anime-inspired approach, the realm of Teyvat bears more than a passing resemblance to the plains of Hyrule. Mechanics such as gliding, use of stamina, an abundance of environmental puzzles, the UI for item management, cooking at fireplaces, hunting benign animals for meat, and other elements appear to have been plucked wholesale from Nintendo’s masterpiece.

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/02/27/genshin-impact-12-minutes-of-gameplay"]

But what Genshin offers is a roster of some 30 playable characters, a considerably more complex RPG system and an undeniable Chinese charm. And of course its own intriguing original story, in which a mysterious playable female character named The Traveler and her companions explore a world of magic and fantasy in search of her missing sibling. (Indeed, there is already an ongoing manga series available online.) Genshin Impact is without doubt a game that wears its influences on its sleeve, but dismissing it as a clone would be a disservice to the many new ideas it brings to the mix.

BAFTA Games Awards Will Now Be an Online-Only Event

The BAFTA Games Awards will ditch their red carpet ceremony and host an online-only event due to the spread of coronavirus. The show will go on as planned on its scheduled date, April 2. The Last of Us Part 2's Delay Reportedly Led to Sustained Crunch, Not Less Crunch

4 years 2 months ago
When The Last of Us Part II was delayed, crunch continued unabated rather than subsiding, according to a report on the game's developer. In a wide-ranging report on crunch culture at Naughty Dog (Uncharted, The Last of Us), Kotaku spoke to anonymous developers at the studio, who discussed the effects of the game's delay from February to April - the main point being that crunch would not subside as a result of the extra development time. One developer explained: “People thinking the extension is somehow to relieve stress or the workload on the team are wrong. The first thing that they wanted to reiterate is that we aren’t slowing down the pace.” [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/10/24/the-last-of-us-part-2-delayed-to-may-2020"] The report does make clear that some Naughty Dog staff were apparently relieved that the game was delayed from its February release date, as it would have been 'a mess' at that time. It also makes clear that many at Naughty Dog are in favour of, or at the very least accept, the crunch at a studio famous for its perfectionism. A developer said, "That’s one of the reasons crunch always happens here. People are given the freedom to keep working longer, to push the envelope of what they are working on, to make things just 10 percent better. It’s what the studio looks for when hiring people." At the time of the delay, creative director Neil Druckmann said that the delay was because the game was not yet "Naughty Dog quality." He added: "While we’re relieved that we won’t have to compromise our vision, we’re disappointed that we weren’t able to avoid this exact situation. We wish we could’ve foreseen the amount of polish we needed, but the size and scope of this game got the better of us.

A Remaster of the Classic Blade Runner Adventure Game Is Coming to PC and Consoles Later This Year

4 years 2 months ago
Nightdive Studios is working to bring back an enhanced version of the 1997 Blade Runner adventure game to PC (via Steam), Xbox One, PS4, and the Nintendo Switch later this year. Originally developed by Westwood Studios (of Command and Conquer fame), the 1997 Blade Runner game tells a story set in the same cinematic universe, but with different characters. While the main character for the video game is a rookie Blade Runner named Ray McCoy, the events of the game take place at the same time as the 1982 Ridley Scott film. Some events in the game even intersect with the movie, making the two companions of sorts. Actors from the original film like Sean Young reprised their roles in the video game for cameo appearances. The Blade Runner video game was stuck in a legal rights battle but was finally re-released on GOG.com in December 2019. Nightdive will utilize its KEX game engine to restore Blade Runner for modern systems, similar to the work done on System Shock: Enhanced Edition, and Turok. Blade Runner: Enhanced Edition will feature updated character models and animations, upscaled cutscenes, widescreen support, keyboard and controller customization, and other improvements. Nightdive CEO Stephen Kick says however that since so much of the original game was ahead of its time, that the studio will preserve Westwood’s vision and gameplay. Meanwhile, the former members of Westwood Studios are working on their own remaster of the Command and Conquer series for EA. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Matt Kim is a reporter for IGN.

Minecraft Library Created to Combat Censorship in Oppressed Countries

4 years 2 months ago
Reporters Without Borders and Blockworks have created The Uncensored Library, a Minecraft map that includes hundreds of virtual books containing articles that have been censored in countries across the world. Many countries censor blogs, newspapers and websites that run counter to their ruling regimes' views and laws - but those same regimes don't block Minecraft. Reporters without Borders contracted Blockworks – a company that builds custom experiences inside the game – to build a library full of virtual books, filled with the same banned writing. Launched today, the library currently contains 200 books, with more to be added as time goes on, including articles by censored, jailed, and even murdered journalists. Space has also been left on the map to add more sections to the library. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-uncensored-library-images-from-the-minecraft-anti-censorship-map&captions=true"] Blockworks had 18 virtual builders take three months to design a huge neo-classical library made up of 12.5 million blocks. Rooms are themed after specific countries, including sculptures and exhibits along the theme of censorship and freedom of expression. You can visit the Uncensored Library website to learn more, watch a Making-of video, and, most importantly, download the latest version of the map here. Valorant Will Launch With 5 Unlocked Characters and Around 5 More to Earn

4 years 2 months ago
Valorant, the upcoming competitive PvP shooter from Riot Games, will launch with a roster of around 10 characters or ‘Agents’. Of that number, five will be available to use right away, while the other half will need to be unlocked using either in-game or real-world currency. Talking to IGN, Valorant executive producer Anna Donlon said: “Of the ten or so agents available at Valorant’s launch, five will be fully unlocked out of the gate. From there, players can unlock additional characters.” [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/03/02/valorant-riots-gameplay-explainer"] Unlocking characters is done through an “engagement-incentivized model”, which is also used to unlock tiers on Valorant’s battle pass. Riot describes this as so: “Players will have the option of earning in-game content through playing and engaging with the game, or they can choose to purchase desired content as a shortcut.” That essentially translates to players being able to earn characters and battle pass tiers via extended play, or unlocking them using real money instead. At a basic level, that's the same as Apex Legends and many other games that feature both unlockable characters and battle passes. In addition, Valorant’s battle pass features both free and “premium” tiers, with a promise that there will be no ability to pay for gameplay or power advantages. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=riot-games-fps-valorant&captions=true"] Of the agents coming at launch, eight have been revealed: Brimstone, Jett, Phoenix, Sage, Sova, Cypher, Viper, and Omen.

New Witcher Game Will Begin Development After Cyberpunk 2077 Release

4 years 2 months ago
CD Projekt Red has announced that it will begin developing a new game set in the world of The Witcher – but not The Witcher 4 – after Cyberpunk 2077 is released. Speaking to Eurogamer Poland (with translation confirmed by IGN Poland), president of CD Projekt Adam Kiciński explained that the developer had created a "clear concept" for a new single-player Witcher game, and that production would begin in earnest once Cyberpunk 2077 is released. After Cyberpunk 2077 sees its initial release, CD Projekt Red will have two larger teams working on Cyberpunk 2077's multiplayer and DLC respectively, with a smaller team beginning work on the Witcher game. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/08/27/cyberpunk-2077-gameplay-demo"] Kiciński also reiterated the fact that a new Witcher game would not be The Witcher 4, i.e. a continuation of the story of Geralt. the protagonist of the first three mainline Witcher games. This is in line with what Kiciński has been saying for several years – back in 2017, he said that Geralt's story was complete, but that the studio would "probably" return to The Witcher in some form. Kiciński doesn't make clear what form the next Witcher game would take, but it seems likely that this would be a follow-on from the RPG style of the previous games, rather than a spin-off in the vein of Gwent: The Witcher Card game.
