Terraria Devs: Google Boycott Includes Future Games, but Not Existing Ones

3 years 3 months ago
The developers of Terraria, Re-Logic, have confirmed that alongside Terraria for Stadia, any future games from the company will also skip Google platforms. However, existing Android and Google Play versions of Terraria will not be affected. Re-Logic has also given IGN deeper insight into its frustrations with Google as a company. Earlier today, Terraria co-creator Andrew Spinks shared their ordeal of losing all access to their Google accounts, including Gmail, Google Play, Google Drive, and more. Attempts to reinstate these accounts were apparently unsuccessful, and Spinks publicly announced Re-Logic’s relationship with Google is severed and an unannounced version of Terrarria for Stadia is canceled. In a follow-up email to IGN, Re-Logic clarified that this means only future versions of Terraria, such as the one on Stadia, “as well as any other games that our studio will develop in the future,” will not be on Google platforms. As for Android and Google Play versions of Terraria, the developers say that these versions will not be affected. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/06/27/terraria-nintendo-switch-launch-trailer"] “Punishing existing customers who paid for our game on these platforms is not what we are about,” Re-Logic says. “To be clear: there should be no impact whatsoever to Terraria on Google platforms, both existing/purchased games as well as ongoing store availability.” Spinks’ disabled Google account included legacy connections to Re-Logic, such as access to the developer's YouTube account, important documents on Google Drive, and more.

For the Second Year in a Row, Take-Two Says It Will Release 93 Games in Five Years

3 years 3 months ago
Almost a full year after announcing it planned to release 93 games in the following five years, Rockstar Games parent company Take-Two Interactive has once again said it will release 93 games in the next five years. This number comes from Take-Two Interactive's earnings call today, in which the company gave the very specific number without acknowledging that a year had gone by since it first gave that number, or outlining how its releases over the last year fit into that planned roster of exactly 93 titles. When asked by an investor on the call to elaborate on how the last year had impacted the number, Take-Two president Karl Slatoff seemed to indicate that "93 titles in five years" as a benchmark had begun in 2020, and was not simply being moved up as a new goal to start in 2021. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/15/gtas-cayo-perico-heist-seven-years-of-evolution"] "The '93 titles' that we put out there was a snapshot, it was a moment in time," he said. "And we really haven't given any updates on that since then. Of course, things move in and out all the time, it hasn't really been that long since then, so you can't really expect that there's going to be a significant amount of movement, but I can tell you for sure there are some things that have fallen out and some things that are back in. But generally speaking, these are still pretty good numbers.

EA Acquires Glu Mobile for $2.1 Billion, One of the Biggest Gaming Acquisitions Ever

3 years 3 months ago

Electronic Arts will acquire mobile game studio Glu Mobile for a weighty $2.1 billion, the companies announced Monday, making it one of the most costly video game acquisitions in history.

Glu Mobile is, as the name implies, a mobile game development studio with a few heavy-hitting franchises to its name: Diner Dash, Disney Sorceror’s Arena, WWE Universe, TapSports Baseball ‘20, Kim Kardashian Hollywood, Deer Hunter, and others.

EA is demonstrating a clear interest in developing their mobile game business with the acquisition. Glu Mobile reports their game catalog has earned more than $1.32 billion in bookings over the past year. EA states that their reasoning for acquiring Glu Mobile includes growing their mobile games portfolio into sports, RPG, lifestyle, casual, and “midcore” games.

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/09/22/the-5-biggest-takeaways-from-xboxs-bethesda-acquisition"]

As part of the deal, Glu Mobile is getting access to EA’s global licensing and distribution capabilities. Glu Mobile’s experience in monetizing sports and casual games is also a point of interest for EA.

“Our acquisition of Glu combines amazing teams and deeply-engaging products to create a mobile games leader with proven expertise across many fast-growing genres,” said Andrew Wilson, CEO of Electronic Arts. “Mobile continues to grow as the biggest gaming platform in the world, and with the addition of Glu’s games and talent, we’re doubling the size of our mobile business. With a deep IP portfolio and an expanding global audience, we’ll deliver more exciting experiences for our players and drive further growth for Electronic Arts.”

GTA 5 and GTA Online Just Had Their Best Year Since Launch

3 years 3 months ago
2020 was yet another record-setting year for Grand Theft Auto 5 and GTA Online, according to publisher Take-Two Interactive's quarterly financial results. In an earnings brief, Take-Two revealed that GTA 5 has sold over 140 million units to date — that's about ten million units sold since May of last year. Additionally, more units of GTA 5 were sold in calendar 2020 than in any other year except for the game's launch year of 2013 — when it sold 32.5 million. GTA Online is also doing well years after launch, with Take-Two saying the game had more players each month in 2020 than any other month since launch, as well as for the full year of 2020 than in any other year since its launch. It also saw the game's highest participation rate from both new and returning players, and its revenue was up 28% year-over-year for the quarter. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/15/gta-online-cayo-perico-heist-gameplay"] As a part of its earnings, Take-Two reaffirmed its commitment to release GTA 5 on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in the second half of 2021, as well as continue to update the game with new content this year. GTA was not the only Take-Two franchise that saw continued surges of interest in 2020. Red Dead Redemption 2 has now sold over 36 million units worldwide, and Red Dead Online reached more players in December of 2020 than it ever has since its beta launch in 2018.

Report: Anthem Next's Future Depends on EA's Upcoming Internal Review

3 years 3 months ago
The fate of Anthem hangs in the balance depending on how an internal review of the reboot goes. That’s according to a new report which says there is a chance EA expands the Anthem Next team or shelves the game altogether. In a new report from Bloomberg, EA executives will review the latest version of Anthem Next later this week. Depending on how the project is progressing, EA will continue to back and grow the Anthem Next team or “abandon the project.” Anthem Next was set to be a re-do of sorts for Anthem, BioWare’s live-service action RPG which quickly lost traction with players. BioWare handed Anthem to BioWare Austin which specifically works on live projects like Star Wars: The Old Republic. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=every-ign-bioware-game-review&captions=true"] BioWare Austin executive producer Christian Dailey became the face of Anthem Next, writing three blog posts about Anthem Next's development throughout 2020. But according to the report, Dailey left the Anthem team in December as part of a management shake-up.

GoldenEye 007 Remaster Was Canceled by Nintendo With Only a Few Bugs Left to Fix

3 years 3 months ago
More details have come to light about the nearly-released GoldenEye 007 remaster following a leak of the game's files online, including the fact that Nintendo canceled the project when it was nearly done. Former developers on the remaster Ross Bury and Mark Edmonds spoke with Ars Technica about its development, saying that it had started in late 2006 or early 2007, but didn't initially have approval from higher-ups. The game was planned as an Xbox 360 release, and was intended as a very straightforward remaster for the console with little in the way of new content beyond some dramatic visual upgrades -- including updated character models to, in many cases, make the characters look much closer in appearance to their real-life actors. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2010/11/02/goldeneye-007-video-review"] Edmonds explained that at some point in the process, the team was told that "everyone had approved it." The team continued work, believing that the rights had cleared and there were no strings attached to the remaster of the Nintendo 64 title. However, just as the game was about to go gold, it was canceled due to an unknown "high up" Nintendo executive. "When it was put to Nintendo, everyone there approved it," Bury said.

Beautiful Puzzler Maquette Gets Release Date, Bryce Dallas Howard to Star

3 years 3 months ago
The beautiful puzzle game known as Maquette, which stars Bryce Dallas Howard and Seth Gabel, will be released on PS5, PS4, and PC on March 2, 2021. Developed by Graceful Decay and published by Annapurna Interactive, Maquette is "set in a recursive world where players experience the life cycle of a relationship and solve spacial puzzles as the story unfolds." Howard and Gabel will play the romantic couple Kenzie and Michael, and are characters that will guide players through the game but won't be "explicitly seen on screen." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/02/08/maquette-cast-announce-trailer"] Speaking to THR, Howard talked about how there isn't a villain in this game, and that this story is more about two people who were together at one point in their lives and simply moved on, after having a huge impact on each other's lives. "This is about a relationship that ultimately doesn't work out," Howard said. "But it's not a tragedy in any way, shape or form. I think there's something really nuanced about that that I really appreciated." Kenzie is described by director Hanford Lemoore as a "San Francisco hipster." "It's an interesting archetype, the hipster, and there's this inherent sense of irony," Howard added. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/07/01/maquette-gameplay-walkthrough-trailer"] Lemoore also discussed how the idea of this game came about while exploring the architecture of his neighborhood in San Francisco about 10 years ago. "Something set me off about trying to do [a game] in 3D with physics," Lemoore explained. "I thought about how physics is so chaotic; with a physics simulation you can knock an object and you know it's going to tumble, but you don't know how it's going to tumble.

Silent Hill Composer Seemingly Teases New Game, Konami Denies Removing Interview

3 years 3 months ago
Update 02/08/2021: Konami has denied that it asked for an interview with Akira Yamaoka to be removed after appearing to tease a new Silent Hill game. In a statement to IGN, a company spokesperson wrote: ""KONAMI did not ask [video uploader] Al Hub to take down the interview." AI Hub (which has not responded to a request for comment) previously wrote that it had been asked to take down the video – in which Silent Hill composer Yamaoka said a game fans were "hoping to hear about" would likely be announced this summer. Many took the removal to have come from Konami, sparking more speculation that it was attempting to plug a leak. However, Konami's denial may instead point to the removal request coming from Yamaoka himself. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Update 02/05/2021: An interview with Akira Yamaoka – which many have taken to be a tease for a new Silent Hill game – has been removed by its original publisher, AIHub. In a statement, AIHub explained that it had been asked to remove the clip (but doesn't specify who asked), and apologised for doing so.

Steam Keeps Breaking Its Own Concurrent Players Record

3 years 3 months ago
Steam has once again broken its own concurrent players record, with over 26 million people logged in at once. As reported by PC Gamer, Valve's digital distribution service hit an all-time high over the weekend, managing 26.4 million users logged in at once on Sunday. It only set the previous record last month, with 25.4 million people online at one time. The rise is no doubt propelled by ongoing lockdown measures across the world pushing more people into gaming at home. Stalwart Steam games like Counter-Strike, Dota and PUBG are consistently driving the platform's numbers forward, but this recent push has been no doubt aided by the Chinese RPG Tale of Immortal which launched in late January and is sat in fourth position in the service's top 10. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=the-best-modern-pc-games-summer-2020-update&captions=true"] Contemporary success stories like Rust, Valheim, Among Us and Phasmophobia have also certainly had a part to play in boosting Steam's numbers. Valheim in particular was last week's top seller, cracking 130 thousand concurrent players in less than a week. The growth has been pretty phenomenal since March of 2020, when Steam's concurrent record was hovering around the 20 million mark. Compare that to December 2020, when it smashed through to 24 million concurrent users with the launch of Cyberpunk 2077.

Unannounced Halo Game Seemingly in Development

3 years 3 months ago
A new Halo game is seemingly in the works, if a recent Microsoft job listing is anything to go by. The producer job posting, which has been advertised on the Microsoft careers website since February 6, reveals that Halo series developer 343 Industries is working on a new entry in the Halo franchise. The listing states that 343i is looking to hire a producer "to help develop a new project in the Halo universe", which presumably signals that the new employee would not be working on Halo Infinite. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/07/23/halo-infinite-9-minutes-of-campaign-gameplay"] The job listing specifically asks for experience in shipping AAA games for the current generation, which all but rules out the idea that this Halo project would come in any form other than a game. However, the listing offers no clues about the content of the game, or when it might arrive. While there's no confirmed information on the new project, a recent rumour could point to a potential direction. Per a VG24/7 article in November 2020, a now-deleted post on Twitter suggested that two other games – Halo Wars 3, and a spin-off following Halo 5's Fireteam Osiris – were being planned by 343i. Whatever project 343i's new producer will be working on, it's hoped that the unannounced title will have a smoother development process than the next entry in the series. Halo Infinite has suffered numerous setbacks since its initial July 2020 reveal, with criticism of its graphics causing 343i to postpone its launch until fall 2021.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection: 343 Teases a 'New Place and Way to Play'

3 years 3 months ago
343 Industries has teased that there just might be a "new place and way to play" Halo: The Master Chief Collection in the near future. 343 revealed the news in its latest MCC Weekly Flighting and Development Update, and said that, while "things can change," it is trying to offer fans of this Halo collection a new way to play. While many would love to see Halo: The Master Chief Collection come to Switch or PS5, this is most likely a hint that we may see this game arrive on the Epic Games Store or possibly Xbox's Cloud Gaming (beta) with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate on iOS and PC. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/17/halo-the-master-chief-collection-the-ultimate-halo-experience-trailer"] The Master Chief Collection wouldn't be the first Microsoft-published game to make its way to the Epic Games Store, as State of Decay 2: Juggernaut Edition is currently available for purchase. As for Cloud Gaming, Microsoft did confirm that Xbox's Cloud Gaming (beta) with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate would be coming to iOS devices and PC in Spring 2021, so the timing could work out, even if it would be a bit on the earlier side of Spring.

Super Mario World: Hear The SNES Classic's Restored Soundtrack

3 years 3 months ago
Thanks in part to the Nintendo Gigaleak, the soundtrack for Super Mario World has been restored and gives fans of the classic game a chance to hear some of the most iconic songs before they were compressed for an SNES cartridge. These tracks, which you can listen to here, were restored by a group of people and shared by @LeBrickster on Twitter and YouTube. This was made possible because the Nintendo Gigaleak included the source code for Super Mario Advance from the Game Boy Advance, which just so happened to reuse samples from Super Mario World. The samples discovered had the names for the instruments used in Super Mario World, and this helped in restoring the original tracks. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/01/30/top-10-console-launch-games-ever"] @LeBrickster also addressed complaints that the restored tracks "do not sound good" and that many "prefer the originals." They mention that these "tracks were likely not designed with the full patches in mind." "What if [Koji] Kondo wasn't limited to the small sound ram size, and he could use sounds to their fullest?

Mass Effect: Andromeda's New Aliens Were Cut Due to Budget, Scope, and Cosplay

3 years 3 months ago
Mass Effect: Andromeda could have had up to ten new alien species, but they were cut due to budget, scope, and... cosplay considerations. One of the biggest criticisms of Mass Effect: Andromeda was the lack of new alien species, especially when the Mass Effect Trilogy introduced us to the Krogan, Asari, Drell, Batarians, Salarians, Turians, Quarian, Prothean, Hanar, Elcor, Keepers, Volus, Collectors, Geth, Reapers, Vorcha, and more. In our Mass Effect: Andromeda review, we said "What’s bizarre is that BioWare went to the trouble of shipping us 2.5 million light years away to introduce only two new alien races (plus some robots) over more than 50 hours of campaign and major side missions, and only one local joins your crew." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2017/03/20/mass-effect-andromeda-review"] Apparently this wasn't the original plan, and many of the developers on Andromeda recently spoke to TheGamer to discuss why these new alien species never made it to the final game. “I think it was a project that couldn't have possibly lived up to expectations,” Neil Pollner, who was a senior writer on Mass Effect 3 and wrote parts of Andromeda, said. “Not just the high bar of the original trilogy, but the logical expectations anyone would have of Mass Effect going to a whole new galaxy. Because the scope of [the first] Mass Effect was so incredibly massive, there was an inherent promise that you'd be getting a massive new experience with a ton of new things in [what was supposed to be the first] Mass Effect Andromeda - new species, new lore, an entire new galaxy at your fingertips, etc. “But we were only given the budget for two new species, plus the Remnant. Not to mention that we couldn't even include all the Milky Way species.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury Is Required to Get the New Mario Pin Set

3 years 3 months ago
The missions for the second set of pins celebrating Mario's 35th anniversary have been available for some time, but your chance to obtain the pins based on such games as Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy, and Super Mario Odyssey may be over unless you have completed expired missions and purchase Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Nintendo recently updated the list of missions for Mario's celebration, adding a handful of new tasks to complete to be eligible for the second pin set. However, many of the previous missions have since expired and can no longer be completed. You'll need to complete 14 missions plus purchase the upcoming Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury for a total of 15 out of the 22 missions before receiving a code for the Wave 2 pins. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=mario-3d-world-bowsers-fury-screenshots&captions=true"] This likely means that most people looking to obtain the newest set of pins won't be able to, as the most you'll be able to complete is 12 of the required 15 missions. As of 2/05/21, completing 14 missions is impossible unless you have already completed at least two missions that are no longer available. These include: Splatoon 2 Splatfest Online Challenge, NintendoVS Challenge Cup, BoxLunch's Super Mario must-haves on Boxlunch, Tetris 18th MAXIMUS CUP, Super Mario Maker 2 Ninji Speedrun Online Challenge, and Super Mario Kart Tour event. Bear in mind, two of the missions require having purchased Super Mario 3D All-Stars and playing Super Mario Bros. 35, the latter which requires a Nintendo Switch Online paid membership.

Hitman 3 Level Transfer for PC Could Arrive 'End of February'

3 years 3 months ago

If you’re a PC gamer, the Hitman 3 file transfer situation has been a bit of a nightmare. Thankfully, developer IO Interactive has given an update on the situation, laying out when players can expect to finally move all their Hitman 1 and 2 PC progress over to Hitman 3.

In a post on the official Hitman forums, IO Interactive said that a file transfer solution solution should be available before the end of February.

“Even with the longest estimates we’ve looked at, the solution will be fully rolled out before the end of February,” IO said. “We’ll keep you updated with the next steps.”

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/02/05/hitman-3-february-roadmap-video"]

IO added that its solution has been completed and is currently being “tested and verified from all angles” to avoid future issues.

Because Hitman 3’s PC version is an Epic Games Store exclusive until January 20, 2022, and because Hitman 1 and 2 were previously only released on Steam, PC players were left in the cold on transferring their progress in the previous game to Hitman 3. This meant that PC players couldn’t access levels, items, and weapons they’d worked to unlock (and paid for) in Hitman 1 or 2, a weird move considering one of the modern Hitman franchise’s biggest features has been the ability to play all previous content from the same game. For players who pre-purchased Hitman 3 or purchased it within the first 10 days of release, IO promised they’ll receive the Hitman 1 GOTY Access Pass as a make-good on the situation.

Destruction AllStars Devs Turn Off Voice Chat by Default After Player Complaints

3 years 3 months ago
Update: Lucid Games, developers of Destruction AllStars, released a new hotfix that addresses the lobby voice communications system. Now, multiplayer lobby voice chat will be disabled by default for all players. Originally, lobby voice chat was left on by default for Destruction AllStars players. More than that, communications including voice and audio was routed through the PS5 DualSense controller. So even if players didn't have a headset, they would still be included in the voice chat lobby through the DualSense's built-in mic and speakers. Going forward, Lucid Games says the team is actively working on a more long-term enhancement to the way voice communications will work in its destruction derby games.

Subnautica: Below Zero Looks to Be More of What We Love

3 years 3 months ago
Subnautica was one of my favorite open world survival games of the last decade, and on the surface of its frigid ocean, Below Zero could almost be mistaken for a huge expansion. As I dive deeper, though, what I've found is a full-fledged sequel that doesn't fix what wasn't broken about the first game while improving in little but meaningful ways in a lot of areas. I haven't fully plumbed the depths of the current Early Access version, which now includes the entirety of the fully-voiced main story. But what I have seen makes me eager to go deeper. Right as I take my first plunge, it's immediately noticeable how much better the tech is this time around. One of my only major frustrations with the original Subnautica was how mood-ruining it could be to see textures and objects pop in as I was zipping around the otherwise beautifully immersive underwater environments in my submersible. Those jarring eyesores are completely gone, allowing me to explore eerie reefs and foreboding geothermal vents the way they deserve to be seen. The overall fidelity hasn't taken a huge step forward, and I can recognize a lot of re-used and recolored models, but it's a great example of how far a little optimization can go. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/02/05/7-minutes-of-subnautica-below-zeros-exciting-new-story"] Below Zero also puts its story front-and-center much more than its predecessor. Your character has a name (Robin), a backstory, existing relationships, and built-in motivations for pursuing the mysteries of this watery world. A series of personal logs that unlock as you hit certain milestones give you a glimpse into her thoughts and feelings. I'm not quite sure yet if I like that better than the blank slate protagonist of the original, but the voice acting and writing have been impressive so far.

Steam Gets Official Launch in China – Could Long-time ‘Gray Area’ Users Lose Their Games?

3 years 3 months ago

Three years after Valve’s initial announcement of a partnership with Chinese MMO developer and publisher Perfect World to officially launch Steam in China, Valve is finally preparing to launch its client in beta at last next month. But after years of Steam’s unofficial existence in a legal gray area in the country for millions of users, there’s a chance its global client -- and all the unlicensed games users have bought and played on it to date -- might not survive the transition.

According to Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad on Twitter, the two companies have announced a public beta for February 9, which will include just two games: the Valve-published DOTA 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. In a separate statement to IGN, he added that around 30 more games were planned for release "in the near term" and even more are planned beyond that.

Chinese players can sign up for Steam China either with new accounts or using existing Steam Global accounts, though if they use existing accounts the only games that will cross over into their Steam China libraries will be those that are licensed in China -- so for the beta, just DOTA 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. And, he added, once Steam China launches in beta, users will no longer be able to play either title on the Steam Global client, instead being forced to switch to official client to continue playing. While future titles are not expected to follow suit and should be available across both clients, this is contingent on one major factor: the continued availability of Steam Global in China alongside Steam China official.

This extra development time will enable our teams to deliver a remake that feels fresh while remaining faithful to the original." Rust Adds Softcore Mode to Help 'More Casual Players'

3 years 3 months ago
Facepunch Studios has added a new Softcore mode to Rust aimed at a more casual player base. "A major part of Rust has always been its hardcore, ruthless PvP and will continue to be," Facepunch Studio's blog post about the new game mode reads. "But we're aware that some players want a less brutal experience. Introducing Softcore mode — a new game mode in Rust, aimed at more casual players. Don't worry, the majority of our servers will still be regular vanilla Rust (hardcore)." When players are killed in this new mode, half of their inventory can be reclaimed by them at either the spot of their death or at a reclaim terminal, which can be found in Bandit Town and at the Outpost. Players can now spawn at those two locations at any time, provided they're not flagged as hostile, and now they can only view the contents of a wounded player. The maximum team size has been changed to four, as well, in order to stop large groups of players terrorising individuals. Rust Softcore Mode Reclaim The update is already live, and this new mode can be found on 10 new servers that launched alongside it. Facepunch Studios says this is just the start of Softcore and that it "will continue to iterate and improve on it moving forward." The move may well have come about because of Rust's recent major uptick in players, seven years after its initial release, after a group of high-profile streamers began to play the game together on a private server started by Offline TV.
