Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Trailers Seem to Hint at New Gym Theme

1 year 11 months ago

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's second trailer revealed new Pokemon, locations, and people — but more notably hints at a potential gym theme. What if Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's gyms are themed after Formula One? There's a chance it could be MotoGP instead, but given the heavy vehicle theme we see between the new Legendary Pokemon and in other elements, one theme or the other seems likely.

Game Freak isn't shy about leaving hints about upcoming announcements in its trailers. The first trailer, for example, featured four Nintendo Switch on a single table that now serves as a nod to the four-player co-op. Below is our analysis of several screenshots from both the first trailer and the second that lead us to believe Pokemon Scarlet and Violet features one of Spain's popular motorsports. And, come on, the Legendary Pokemon literally have wheels protruding from their chests.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake Not Canceled, but Delayed Again

1 year 11 months ago

The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake has not been canceled, but an issue with timing resulted in the game being delisted from retailers.

Earlier today, retailers like GameStop and others were delisting pre-orders for the upcoming Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, prompting concerns the project has been canceled. IGN can confirm that the Remake is still in development, but has been further delayed out of FY23.

In a statement to IGN Ubisoft says, "The development of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake will now be led by Ubisoft Montreal. We’re proud of the work achieved by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, and Ubisoft Montreal will benefit from their learnings as the new team will continue the work to deliver a great remake."

Ubisoft added, "As a consequence, we are no longer targeting a FY23 release anymore and the game has been delisted. If players wish to cancel their preorder they are invited to contact their retailer. They will be updated on the project as the development is moving along."

This is not the first time the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake has been delayed. After being announced in 2020 the remake was set to be released in 2021 before being delayed to Fiscal year 23. The project also moved development teams from Ubisoft Pune and Mumbai to Ubisoft Montreal.

Star Wars Video Game Face-Off: The Winner Revealed

1 year 11 months ago

Last week, in honor of Star Wars Celebration and the premiere of Disney+'s Obi-Wan Kenobi series, we asked you to help us decide which video game from that galaxy far, far away was the best of them all. Now, after thousands and thousands of 1v1 battles with matchups like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order vs. Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy and Star Wars Battlefront vs. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, the ultimate Star Wars game has been chosen.

So, which competitor claimed the top spot for the best Star Wars video game and is prophecized to bring balance to the Force? Drumroll please...

As if there was any doubt, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic has once again claimed the top spot of a list of best Star Wars video games. We also crowned KOTOR #1 on our ranking of Star Wars games, and it has impressively held on to that honor despite being originally released in 2003. The love for KOTOR may only get stronger in the future as a remake is currently in the works at Aspyr.

KOTOR's story, which is set thousands of years before the films, remains the high point for a quintessential Jedi journey that is filled with memorable characters, surprising twists, fantastic RPG mechanics, and much more. The competition was tough, however, as its 91.5% win percentage was only about 3% more than the second-place finisher - 2019's Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

Hardspace: Shipbreaker Review

1 year 11 months ago

It’s one thing to blow up a spaceship; it’s another to dismantle it piece by piece, systematically reducing it from a hulking barge to a pile of valuable scrap. There’s a great sense of satisfaction in doing that job well, especially when performing it efficiently requires careful planning and carries a not-insignificant risk of killing yourself in a wide variety of ways in the process. Hardspace: Shipbreaker does a fine job of empowering us to carve up these gigantic space turkeys like every day is Thanksgiving and smothers it in a thick blue collar gravy, but it does wear thin with time. By the end of its campaign, the repetitive objectives and intentionally slow progression made shipbreaking start to feel like exactly what it’s simulating: hard labor.

Almost immediately upon stepping into the vacuum of space, an excellent tone is set with twangy music that takes me back to an early scene of the pilot episode of 2002’s Firefly, where the crew raids a derelict ship for valuables by cutting through the hull and floating away with them. Swimming through a shipyard with a full six degrees of freedom feels serene and control is smooth, thanks in large part to the brake button that allows you to come to a stop more or less whenever you like (as long as you don't run out of thruster fuel). Physics aren't truly Newtonian, in that objects will eventually slow to a stop, but innertia is a powerful force to be reckoned with in both your own movement and when moving objects around. And while the graphics and lighting aren’t cutting edge by any means the spaceship designs are distinctive, often asymmetrical, and interesting – if I hadn’t already known that the developer, Blackbird Interactive, is also at work on Homeworld 3, it would’ve been easy to guess.

Final Fantasy 16: Square Enix Shows Off New Characters and Screenshots

1 year 11 months ago

Square Enix has profiled two key characters from Final Fantasy 16, and shown off the game's world of Valisthea in new screenshots.

Following on from its gameplay trailer reveal and release window announcement in the PlayStation State of Play yesterday (June 2), Square Enix shared even more from the game in a blog post.

Unlike protagonist Clive Rosfield - firstborn son of the Archduke of Rosaria - the first new character introduced doesn't have quite as fancy a title. Hugo Kupka is a "permanent economic adviser", but thankfully for players is also host to the Eikon (the game's name for summons) Titan to keep things interesting.

"Once a nameless foot soldier in the Republican Army, his awakening as Dominant of the Eikon Titan thrust him to the forefront of Dhalmekian politics," the post reads. "It was here he used his newfound position as the most powerful man in the republic to exert influence over both the nation's armies and its policy making - amassing a personal fortune in the process."

Money and power aren't everything though, as the second new character, Benedikta Herman teaches him these "are far from all the world has to offer",

Insomniac's Spider-Man Games Have Sold Over 33 Million Copies

1 year 11 months ago

Insomniac Games has revealed that its Marvel's Spider-Man games have sold over 33 million copies worldwide as of May 15, 2022.

"I’d like to pause and express Insomniac’s profound gratitude for those of you reading this post who have already purchased and played the PlayStation console versions of Marvel’s Spider-Man (PS4) and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales (PS4, PS5)," explains Insomniac's Ryan Schneider in a PlayStation Blog post. "Let me tell you, there are a lot of folks to thank for your passionate support!" It's unclear whether this sales milestone also counts Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered on PS5.

However, the series will continue to sell now that both Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered and Spider-Man: Miles Morales are coming to PC. The former launches on August 12 while the latter will be released later this fall.

The PC versions of the games are handled by Nixxes, a studio specializing in PC ports that Sony acquired last year. “I am extremely pleased with our collaboration with Insomniac on the Marvel’s Spider-Man series, the shared support provided between our teams and their dedication to quality above all is inspiring," says Nixxes founder Jurjen Katsman. "It allows our team to leverage our technical expertise and focus on creating the best possible PC experience that takes advantage of all the exciting possibilities the PC platform has to offer."

Sega Announces Mega Drive Mini 2, With 50 Games Included

1 year 11 months ago

Sega has announced the Mega Drive Mini 2 which comes with more than 50 pre-installed Mega Drive and Mega CD games (Sega Genesis and Sega CD in North America).

Sonic CD, Virtua Racing, Silpheed and more are all included in the ¥9,980 (around $76) price alongside a new Mega Drive port of Fantasy Zone, which was never released on the original console. Sega is instead porting (presumably) the Master System or arcade version to Mega Drive using its sequel, Super Fantasy Zone, as a basis, and has promised other arcade ports that it described as "mysterious new work".

As reported by Video Games Chronicle, the console was announced during a Japanese live stream and is expected to be released on October 27 in Japan, though an international release hasn't been confirmed as of yet.

The original Sega Mega Drive Mini was launched in 2019 with 42 games, including some that never properly arrived in the west, and it appears its sequel will also grant access to some previously difficult to get games.

Devolver's Summer Showcase Coming June 9, With Host 'Mecha' Suda51

1 year 11 months ago

Devolver Digital has just announced its summer showcase event, and this year, it's all about the countdown.

The 'Devolver Marketing Countdown to Marketing' will be held on June 9 at 3pm Pacific / 6pm Eastern / 11pm UK, and will apparently center around the 30 minutes of the countdown that typically takes place before a big showcase. It will also be hosted, incredibly, by "mecha" Suda51.

If you've seen Devolver's shows in the past, you probably have a good idea of what the deal is here. But if not, Devolver shared a little teaser:

Don't fret if you were hoping for actual game announcements though, because Devolver is promising "at least four video game announcements" during the event. Last year's show revealed games including Trek to Yomi and Wizard with a Gun, as well as showed more of Inscryption, Death's Door, and several other games.

Devolver's showcase takes place shortly after Summer Game Fest Live that same day, which is itself following the Upload VR showcase. For a full rundown of everything to expect from the Summer of Gaming 2022, we've got a full calendar here.

Resident Evil 4 Remake: Fans Spot Potential Connections to Resident Evil Village

1 year 11 months ago

Resident Evil 4 Remake was only revealed during yesterday's PlayStation State of Play, but fans have already dissected the trailer and found potential connections to Resident Evil Village.

Perhaps the most obvious link between the two games was spotted by kaijumediajames on Reddit (below), who showed the similarities between a carving in the new trailer with Mother Miranda's cult symbol from Village.

The following paragraphs contain minor spoilers for Resident Evil Village.

The two images are definitely similar, and given that Resident Evil 4 takes place more than 20 years before Village, and therefore before the death of antagonist Mother Miranda, it's definitely possible that Capcom could link the two games (especially since we know they're "reimagining" the remake's story).

Further connections were noted by lejitness on Reddit who compared an image of (probable) antagonist Saddler in the trailer with one of Mother Miranda's forms from Village (below). Interestingly, this scene appeared directly after the cult symbol appeared on screen.

Resident Evil 4 Remake: Leon's Jacket Is a Recreation of a Real-Life $1500 Product

1 year 11 months ago

Resident Evil 4 Remake's existence was finally confirmed yesterday, and it turns out the new version of Leon Kennedy's iconic jacket is also totally real.

As spotted by eagle-eyed Reddit user redgrave187, the small print in Resident Evil 4 Remake's reveal trailer states that Capcom got permission from clothing firm Schott N.Y.C. to use their real jacket in-game. The US government clearly pays well, as the sheepskin leather bomber jacket costs a hefty $1,495, though perhaps no price is too high for quality clothing during a mysterious parasitic outbreak.

While Leon chose the classic brown look, the jacket is also available with gold accents or in straight black - perhaps a suggestion for some DLC costumes , given that Capcom likes to pepper them throughout its Resident Evil remakes.

Final Fantasy 16's Lead Developers are an All-Star Line-Up, Including a Combat Director from Devil May Cry 5

1 year 11 months ago

Final Fantasy 16's development team consists of an all-star line-up, with several industry veterans from not just the Final Fantasy series, but Dragon Quest and Devil May Cry .

Shared on the game's Twitter (below), Final Fantasy 16's combat director, Ryota Suzuki, was a gameplay lead on Dragon's Dogma, an effects designer on Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and a designer on Devil May Cry 5. It seems fair to say that the action elements of the new RPG come with some pedigree.

Producer Naoki Yoshida, while most known for turning Final Fantasy 14 Online from a dead-on-arrival game into an incredibly successful MMO, has also worked on Dragon Quest X and Dragon Quest Builders, and director Hiroshi Takai has plenty of JRPG chops having previously worked on Final Fantasy 5, SaGa Frontier, and The Last Remnant.

The Final Fantasy 14 experience goes deeper as creative director and screenplay writer Kazutoyo Maehiro and art director Hiroshi Minagawa worked on the game with Yoshida, alongside character design lead Kazuya Takahashi who also worked on Final Fantasy 12 and Tactics.

Capcom delivered our first look at Street Fighter 6's gameplay and more of its roster at PlayStation's June State of Play. The trailer showed off several iconic Street Fighter characters and teased what looks to be a new logo.

The techniques include Drive Impact, Drive Parry, Overdrive Art, Drive Rush, and Drive Reversal.

The Callisto Protocol Release Date and First Gameplay Revealed

1 year 11 months ago

The Callisto Protocol gameplay has finally been revealed alongside a release date set for December 2, 2022.

A third-person survival horror game, developer Striking Distance Studios was founded by Dead Space creator Glen Schofield. In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Schofield explained said "I'm excited to be returning to my roots with an all-new take on the sci-fi survival horror genre."

That influence is clear in its reveal trailer, with horrifying monsters and zombie-like creatures all throughout its futuristic setting of Jupiter's moon. You play as Jacob Lee, voiced by Josh Duhamel, who is a prisoner on the moon trying to survive during a "mysterious outbreak" that's mutating people into terrible monsters called Biophage.

Schofield says "horror starts with atmosphere," and that special antention has been paid to things like lighting and the PS5's 3D audio. The Callisto Protocol will also take advantage of The Dualsense controller's haptics for everything from heavy enemy footsteps to swinging your weapon.

Speaking of combat, the blog post describes it as having a "a strategic combat system that forces players to get up close and personal with our horrifying creatures." Additionally, you'll use a gravity weapon named the GRP to mix ranged and melee, allowing you to do things like freeze enemies in place or use pieces of the terrain as a defensive tool.

Stray, PS5's Cyberpunk Cat Game, Gets a Release Date

1 year 11 months ago

Stray, the game about a cat navigating a cyberpunk city, will be released on July 19 for PS4 and PS5.

Shown at Sony's State of Play event today, the PlayStation console exclusive puts players in the furry little feet of a cat lost in a futuristic cyber city that's falling apart. Separated from its family, the cat must solve an ancient mystery and find its way home with the help of a small robot friend known as B12.

It was also announced that Stray will be on PlayStation Plus at launch for members of the "Extra" tier and above.

In a PlayStation blog post, BlueTwelve Studio producer Swann Martin-Raget reminsced on Stray's seven-year development, and the challenges that came with making a believable, playable cat:

"Trying to control a cat – whether it’s in real life or when making a video game – is definitely not a walk in the park! From the very beginning, we knew that the controls and animations of our star character needed to be absolutely spot-on in order to properly convey this exhilarating feeling of skills and movement. So Miko, our cat animator, took the challenge to heart and spent considerable time looking for images and video references. The good and somewhat surprising thing we found is this: It really seems that the whole internet was basically invented for the sole purpose of hosting loads of cute cat pictures and videos! So we ended up having a lot of very good material to work with for references."

No Man's Sky Is Getting a PlayStation VR2 Version

1 year 11 months ago

No Man's Sky is getting a PSVR2 version, and it should launch alongside Sony's new headset as a free update to the core game.

Announced during Sony's State of Play event, developer Hello Games explained that it has been secretly developing a new version of the game for PlayStation VR2. In a statement, co-founder Sean Murray said, "the power of PlayStation 5, coupled with the all-new PlayStationVR2 hardware, including the new Sense controllers, combine together to take that sense of immersion and believability up another level."

A trailer showed a number of situations from the game, with a particular focus on the player's hands controlling their ship and weaponry – presumably hinting at how the version will make use of PSVR2's hand-tracking controllers.

The company isn't talking about any specific new features being designed for the PSVR2 version of the game, but added that, "this will be a moment for us to focus on VR players of all types." The implication appears to be that all VR versions of No Man's Sky could be due for an upgrade.

The New Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Will Be Revealed Next Week

Not only that, but the official Steam Twitter account retweeted it with the open-eyes emoji signaling the game could make its way to the online game platform.

MultiVersus: 13 Cool Little Details

1 year 11 months ago

When developer Player First and Warner Brothers were creating their new platform fighter, MultiVersus, which ties together all the WB properties, including Game of Thrones, DC, Looney Tunes and more, a lot of attention clearly went into the small details. From backstory references to character interactions and gameplay mechanics, MultiVersus has tons of fun little Warner Bros’ IP details to notice while you and your friends are beating the crap out of each other. Here are 13 of the coolest found in its closed alpha.

1. Scooby Doo’s Velma is the only character so far with a crouch walk, and when she does it, the screen blurs because she’s looking for her glasses. We all know she can’t see without her glasses.

2. When Steven Universe’s Garnet loses, her loss screen animation has her exploding and dropping two gems. This is because Garnet is a fusion of Ruby and Sapphire.

3. The advanced tutorial for Dodge Attacks features Rick and Morty’s Mr. Meeseeks as training dummies. Mr. Meeseeks, of course, are organisms designed only for one task, who disappear when that task is fulfilled. Apparently, their one task here is to get clubbed by Shaggy. What a waste. Since so far this is the only Rick and Morty character in the game, perhaps it could also be a tease at a later character reveal down the line?

Ripout Preview: Doom 3-Style FPS Horror...With Friends

1 year 11 months ago

It’s very apparent at first sight that Ripout is absolutely in love with 80’s horror. Its retrofuture interiors and lumpy body horror should fire plenty of nostalgia neurons for fans of The Thing or Alien. But as its aesthetics are clearly in the past, the gameplay makes a valiant attempt at moving the co-op shooter into a newer, less crowded direction. Ripout chooses patient and deliberate room-sweeping over colorful and frantic bullet storms against waves of bad guys – a sort of Doom 3-esque experience, but with friends. And though I only had a small window of time to stalk its corridors, Ripout has the makings of a premier horror space shooter without notable contemporaries.

In Ripout, humanity made a bioweapon to fend off an alien invasion which backfired, creating a dangerous race of mutants that sent the human race barreling towards extinction. In the year 2084, Team Human is down bad and needs to do desperate and dangerous things to get a leg up on the enemy. Within the limits of the demo I took with the team at Pet Project Games, that meant flying out into a derelict freighter, shooting our way though fleshy bad guys to complete objectives, and getting out safely.

Dragon Age: Dreadwolf Title and Logo Officially Revealed

1 year 11 months ago

BioWare has been hard at work on the next chapter of the Dragon Age franchise and today the studio is ready to reveal a title. The next game in BioWare’s fantasy RPG series is called Dragon Age: Dreadwolf.

Fans of the series will know the Dreadwolf is a reference to Solas. Without going into spoilers, Solas, a magical party member and potential love interest in Dragon Age: Inquisition. BioWare released an official blog that’s light on details but dives into Solas’ story a bit more.

“Solas, the Dread Wolf. Some say he might be an ancient elven god, but some say not,” the blog says. “Others say a betrayer of his people… or a savior who now seeks to rescue them at the cost of your world. His motives are inscrutable and his methods sometimes questionable, earning him a reputation as something of a trickster deity — a player of dark and dangerous games.”

BioWare says that using Solas’s namesake “no doubt suggests a spectrum of endless possibilities of where things may go. But at the core of this, like every past game, is you.”

Deus Ex Sequel Rumours Seemingly Quashed by Voice Actor

1 year 11 months ago

Deus Ex actor Elias Toufexis has denied working on a sequel to 2016's Mankind Divided after rumours circulated as a result of a misinterpreted tweet.

Toufexis posted on June 1 that he's been voicing a character "in this huge AAA game for a few years", causing speculation that he was talking about a fifth mainline Deus Ex game. Toufexis' best known role is as Adam Jensen, the protagonist of Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. The latter game ended on a cliffhanger fans have been hoping will be resolved for many years.

This tied in with Embracer Group's recent comments (the new owner of the Deus Ex franchise) that it sees "great potential" in sequels, remakes, and spin-offs of Deus Ex, but Toufexis has now put these rumours to bed.

Sea of Thieves Players Are at War Over Whether to Save or Destroy an Iconic Location

1 year 11 months ago

Sea of Thieves players are once again locked in battle, but not over pirate treasure this time. Instead, two warring factions are fighting over whether to save or destroy an iconic in-game location.

The grand finale of Sea of Thieves' season six story arc lets players either work to restore Golden Sands – previously a fairly charming outpost but currently brought to ruin – or keep it desolate and see what might appear in its place.

The war started in-game, as players were tasked with taking the side of either the Hunters – who need to deliver supplies to Golden Sands – or the Reapers, who need to destroy supernatural rowboats to hamper repair efforts. On June 9, the most successful side will see their efforts made permanent.

However, as part of the event, developer Rare encouraged players to take their views to social media by posting either #SaveGoldenSands and #RuinGoldenSands. It's fair to say that things are getting interesting outside the game as well as in.

Madden NFL 23's Gameplay Changes Revealed, Including 'Fan Requests' for Franchise Mode

1 year 11 months ago

EA has revealed the gameplay changes coming to Madden NFL 23, including the addition of fan requested features in its Franchise mode.

Akin to Career Mode in FIFA or MyGM in NBA 2K, Franchise has been heavily criticised by fans in recent years but Madden NFL 23 promises a built-up and refined version which includes staff management, weekly game planning, and scouting.

New free agency tools, improved trade logic, and increased scout decision making also increase the authenticity, all packaged together with a simplified user interface intended to create a stronger understanding of how to build a strong franchise.

For those looking to launch a solo career, Face of the Franchise mode has also received some upgrades, headlined by the addition of the cornerback position for the first time. The similar upgrades to Franchise mode apply here too, such as the improved trade logic and so on.

While most core systems have been improved, Madden NFL 23 also introduces new technology called FieldSense that EA said "provides the foundation for consistent, ultra-realistic gameplay" by providing players with more control at every position on the field.

This materialises in a few ways. Defence will be more adaptive than ever before, with players able to perform mid-air knockouts, hit the pile to assist in tackles already in progress, blow up blocks, and force turnovers with stand-up tackles.

GeForce Now Will No Longer Support God of War Starting Next Month

1 year 11 months ago

God of War will no longer be available in the GeForce Now library beginning next month, Nvidia announced today.

Beginning July 1st, both the Steam and Epic Games Store versions of God of War will be unplayable on Nvidia's cloud gaming service. In an email sent to IGN, an Nvidia spokesperson confirmed that God of War was being pulled from the service because "the publisher, who previously opted into streaming on GeForce Now," decided to opt out.

Fortunately, Nvidia confirmed that thanks to GeForce Now's opt-in process, which allows some games to continue to be available to subscribers on a legacy basis, players that started playing God of War on GeForce Now before July 1st, will still have access. The only requirement is that GeForce Now subscribers need to load and access the game's main menu via GeForce Now at least once before the title is pulled from the service.

God of War arrived on GeForce Now back in late April, and it allowed RTX 3080 tier members to stream the game on the cloud at up to 4K resolution or have a frame rate as high as 120 FPS, depending on the device.
