XCOM Director Says the Series Will Return

1 year 11 months ago

XCOM director Jake Solomon has confirmed the turn-based tactical series will definitely make a return.

Speaking to VGC, Solomon said that XCOM will continue as long as he and the studio are around to make it. "As long as I live, as long as [developer] Firaxis lives, XCOM is... I won't even say sleeping," he said. "I will say XCOM is definitely not dead."

The latest game in the series, XCOM: Chimera Squad, was released in 2020, but the studio has since switched to working on Marvel's Midnight Suns. This new game was announced in August last year and follows a similar formula to the XCOM games, though obviously set in the Marvel universe and featuring the likes of Iron Man, Wolverine, and Spider-Man.

XCOM games have otherwise been released fairly regular since the series was relaunched in 2012 with XCOM: Enemy Unknown, but Solomon's confirmation is a good confirmation that this will continue even as the studio explores these other projects.

In our 7/10 review of the previous game, IGN said: "XCOM: Chimera Squad plays with some interesting new ideas, but doesn't bring them together into a particularly graceful whole."

Final Fantasy 7 Is Getting a 25th Anniversary Stream Next Week

1 year 11 months ago

Square Enix is hosting Final Fantasy 7 stream next week in celebration of the game's 25th anniversary – and many fans will be hoping to see a glimpse of Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Part 2.

Streaming on the publisher's YouTube and Twitch channels, the stream will take place on June 16 at 3pm Pacific / 6pm Eastern / 11pm UK (so June 17 at 9am AEDT).

It's unclear what Square Enix will announce during the ten minute stream but it promised fans "a first look at all the information surrounding the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy 7".

While fans' may be hoping for some news regarding the long-awaited Remake: Part 2, it's worth noting that Square Enix has several ongoing spin-offs of the classic PlayStation RPG, and could just be announcing new information regarding those. Final Fantasy VII Remake director Tetsuya Nomura said last month that Square Enix would be announcing "various things" during an anniversary event but, again, didn't go into further details.

Devolver 2022 Summer Showcase: Everything Announced and Revealed

1 year 11 months ago

Devolver has, once again, out-weirded the rest of the games industry with its 2022 summer showcase. Hosted by a malfunctioning "mecha" Suda51, the Devolver Marketing Countdown to Marketing was, well, intended to be a countdown... but the ongoing Devolver Cinematic Universe we've seen evolve over the last few years managed include robots, sci-fi madness, and several game announcements.

We’ve rounded up all of the new reveals in one handy place:

Anger Foot is a New Game About 'Kicking Doors and Kicking Ass'

Originally an itch.io game, an expanded version of Anger Foot is on its way in 2023. A bonkers FPS in which you use "the world's deadliest feet", Anger Foot will have you battering gangsters, buying new sneakers and upgrading your powers as you smash your way through sewers and skyscrapers alike.

The Plucky Squire Is a Beautiful, Ambitious New 2D/3D Adventure

The Plucky Squire sees a beautifully animated storybook adventurer called Jot, who works out he can leap out of said book into the 3D world. It results in one game with two very different perspectives. Inside the book is a top-down, 2D, hand-drawn adventure filled with mini-games. Outside the book is a gigantic world set in a child's bedroom, reminsicent of It Takes Two's 3D adventures. It gets stranger too – different surfaces can become 2D spaces of their own, from mugs to lunchboxes. It will arrive in 2023 for PC, Switch, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.

Stormgate Is an RTS Built for 1v1, Co-Op, Casual Play, Esports and, Well, Anyone

1 year 11 months ago

With its sleek sci-fi/fantasy aesthetic, monstrous enemies, and mech-clad heroes, you’d be forgiven for mistaking Stormgate for a new Blizzard real-time strategy. And, in a manner of speaking, you’d be right; Stormgate might not be from Blizzard, but it is from some of that company’s brightest minds. These days they’re at Frost Giant, a new studio built from scratch by a collection of ex-Blizzard developers, and they have ambitions of taking some of the best ideas from StarCraft and Warcraft to the next level.

Among those minds is Tim Morten, the softly spoken former production director of StarCraft 2. Today he’s CEO of Frost Giant, still directing the production of a multi-faceted RTS. Stormgate, he tells me, was born at least partially out of a desire to evolve one of StarCraft 2’s most successful modes: co-op.

Co-op play was an “afterthought” for StarCraft 2. “It really wasn't something that we expected to resonate as much as it did with players,” says Morten. “But in fact it became the most popular mode in the game after we released it with Legacy of the Void. It's clear from that, that there was an appetite to play more socially.”

‘Social’ is an important word for Frost Giant, and Stormgate is designed with multiplayer in mind. As you’d expect, there are the classic 1v1 competitive clashes, but these are supported by a tournament system directly built into the game. Forget forums, Twitter, or Discord; you’ll be able to create leagues, teams, friends, and rivalries within Stormgate itself.

Annapurna Interactive Announces Its Second Annual Showcase This July

1 year 11 months ago

At the end of Day of the Devs today, Annapurna snuck in with the surprise announcement of its second annual showcase, just like it did last year. It will take place on July 28, 2022, at 12 pm PT / 3pm EDT / 8pm BST.

As for what games we might see this time around, we can make some guesses. Right now, Annapurna has a number of games in the works for this year including Hindsight and Neon White (Stray will release before the showcase happens).

Annapurna also has Skin Deep, Storyteller, and Thirsty Suitors queued up beyond 2022, so we might expect some firmer dates on those games, or at least more gameplay.

Last year's showcase was fairly stacked, packing over 15 game teases and announcements into just half an hour. It included a release window for Stray, an expansion announcement for The Outer Wilds, and tons more. Scanning through last year's roster might offer some further clues as to what's coming this time around. Maybe we'll finally see what Ivy Road is working on?

In the meantime, check out our roundup of everything announced at Day of the Devs and for everything out of Summer of Gaming in the coming weeks and months, we have a full schedule of everything going on.

Day of the Devs: Everything Announced and Shown, Including Choo-Choo Charles and Planet of Lana

1 year 11 months ago

Day of the Devs just wrapped up, leaving us with a heck of a lineup of fascinating indie games slated for the coming months and years. We saw a total of 16 games over the last hour, some of them from known indie studios such as the folks behind Monument Valley, and others the debut games from new studios.

We’ve got a roundup below of everything we just saw, so if you’re looking for the next indie darling to fall in love with, this is the place to check:

Time Flies

The newly-announced Time Flies explores the limited time we all have here on earth, from the perspective of a fly. The time the fly has to live is dependent on where you are in the world, converting years to seconds – so if life expectancy in the United States is about 77 years, players in the US will have 77 seconds to live. During that time, you can try to complete items on a bucket list (similar to Untitled Goose Game’s To Do list) such as “Learn an Instrument,” “Go on Tour,” or “Get Rich.” Time Flies is made by Michael Frei and Raphaël Munoz, and is coming to PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and PC/Mac sometime this year.

Midnight Fight Express Hands-On Preview: A Brawler That Oozes Cool

1 year 11 months ago

If you’re like me, then you've spent a lot of your time wishing you had Bruce Lee-level combat prowess that you could unleash upon endless waves of foolish challengers. Training to be that awesome sounds like a lot of work, but Midnight Fight Express helped me get a bit closer to that fantasy by absolutely nailing everything I’d want in a fast-paced, highly lethal, and fantastically challenging brawler. With an extensive set of unlockable skills and environments that begged to be an accomplice in my next felony assault, it was love at first dropkick to the face and I cannot wait to play more.

At the heart of any good brawling game is a sandbox that allows for creativity, and Midnight Fight Express has got that in spades. Every room I entered felt like an armory, with objects scattered around that could be thrown or swung at my opponents, and things to smash enemies against or throw them off of. In one section I found explosive items to toss at enemies that instantly turned them into pink giblets, and in another I used moving subway cars to make sure they were on track for an early death. Every time I stepped through a doorway to a new area, I felt a jolt of excitement wondering what playground of destruction awaited me on the other side, and in the eight levels I got to play that feeling never went away.

The Last of Us Multiplayer Game Has a Story, and Is 'As Big' as Other Naughty Dog Games

1 year 11 months ago

Naughty Dog's Neil Druckman revealed new details about the long-awaited standalone multiplayer game set in The Last of Us world during today's Summer Game Fest showcase.

Concept%20art%20from%20an%20upcoming%20The%20Last%20of%20Us%20standalone%20multiplayer%20game.

Originally supposed to be a multiplayer mode for The Last of Us Part 2, he explained that the team's ambition made it evolve into something far beyond that over the last two years. "This game is big," Druckman said. "It's as big as any of our single-player games that we've done, and in some ways bigger."

Alongside the concept art above, Druckman confirmed it will have a story of its own, though he also said "the way we're telling that story is very unique to this game." It will have "a brand new cast of characters" as well, and while its new location wasn't confirmed, the image shared looks like it could be set in San Francisco.

A final name and proper gameplay weren't shown, but Druckman said more details would be coming next year. The last time we heard about the project was late 2021, when Naughty Dog simply confirmed it was still coming.

Nightingale Gets a Longer Gameplay Look at Summer Game Fest

1 year 11 months ago

At Summer Game Fest today, we finally got a longer, more detailed look at Aaryn Flynn and Inflexion's upcoming survival game, Nightingale, including a detailed look at how players travel between different fae realms: by using realm cards.

The trailer emphasizes the importance of the survival elements of Nightingale, focusing first on keeping warm, dry, and fed. Once that's accomplished, players can start to look for a way to move to new realms by crafting items called realm cards using rare resources they might encounter in the world they're currently exploring.

The cards crafted and used can dictate certain properties of the realm they'll open the door to, allowing players some control over where they end up. These properties include environment type, weather patterns, resources, challenges, and more, and will procedurally generate a new realm based on those aspects.

We also got a brief look at other features such as crafting and combat, and a new enemy called the Automatons.

We've had a lot of questions about Nightingale since it was announced, and we've gotten a lot of answers from Flynn about its seemingly endless fae realms and its roots in BioWare storytelling. Nightingale is headed to PC via early access release sometime this year.

Layers of Fears Is a 'Psychedelic Horror Chronicle' Made in Unreal Engine 5

1 year 11 months ago

Bloober Team has announced Layers of Fears, a "psychedelic horror chronicle" made in Unreal Engine 5 and coming to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in early 2023.

Announced at Summer Game Fest, the game is seemingly pitched somewhere between a remaster and a sequel. Bloober promises that it will 'build on the foundations' of the original Layers of Fear, Layers of Fear: Inheritance, and Layers of Fear 2, but will "include an expanded plotline and gameplay direction."

A trailer showed off what looked to be remade versions of scenes from all the Layers of Fear games, but it was hard to get a sense of what the gameplay changes might be, nor how they will be tied together. We'll be sure to ask Bloober Team what those might be when we can.

In a press release, Bloober CEO Piotr Babieno said: “We are bringing back a franchise that is really special for us, in a new form that will give players a truly fresh gaming experience and that will shed new light on the overall story. Our plan was to recreate the games, but we didn’t want to make it a simple collection of two remastered games. We’ve worked out a new approach, something that is maybe not yet obvious. But I can tell you there’s a reason why we called it Layers of Fear's'.”

The company has previously teased some kind of return to its Layers of Fear series, and said that it would be made using Unreal Engine 5. We awarded 2019's Layers of Fear 2 a 9/10 review, saying, "with unique puzzles and expert pacing, Layers of Fear 2 is a harrowing and consistently exciting endeavor."

Saints Row: Boss Factory Lets You Create a Custom Character Before the Game Arrives

1 year 11 months ago

Volition has announced Saints Row: Boss Factory, a free app that lets you use the game's custom character creator to build your main character before the game arrives. It's out now.

Announced at Summer Game Fest, developer Volition revealed that Boss Factory would come to PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC today.

The free app will allow you to use the full character creator (minus any items unlocked by progressing through the game) to save up to six character designs. Those designs can be created on any platform, and imported into the final game on any other platform. You can even save and share your charcater design with other players, who can then use it in their game.

Saint's Row has famously offered diverse character creators, and the new game promises to keep up that tradition, offering thousands of choices for your main character, known as the Boss. You'll be able to import your chosen creation into the final game when it launches on August 23.

Using the Boss Factory and importing a character comes with a bonus - you'll unlock two helmets to use in the game when you do. Until the game comes out, Volition will be creating curated galleries of bosses, and showing off the best and most upvoted creations on the Saints Row website.

Saints Row is a reboot of the over-the-top open-world series. In a recent preview, we said it looked like a fun throwback to the genre's past, saying "Volition’s reboot of the series looks a lot of fun, filled with the wackiness, carnage, and humour you’d expect."

Goat Simulator 3 Officially Announced, Skips Goat Simulator 2

1 year 11 months ago

Coffee Stain Studios is skipping straight to Goat Simulator 3.

As announced at the Summer Game Fest, Coffee Stain Studios is following up their viral hit Goat Simulator with, not Goat Simulator 2, but Goat Simulator 3.

Just as the first Goat Simulator parodied the famous Dead Island trailer, Goat Simulator 3's official trailer was a spoof on the eight-year-old trailer for Dead Island 2, which has disappeared from the public eye.

In a double spoof, Goat Simulator 3 is taking a jab at the long wait time by going straight to the third entry.

Despite the name "simulator" Goat Simulator is anything but. Play as a goat, create havoc around town, strap on a jetpack and go to space, you know, normal goat things.

Head-butt through the world, play minigames, and join up with friends in four-player multiplayer.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns Trailer Reveals Spider-Man and Release Date

1 year 11 months ago

A new trailer for Marvel’s Midnight Suns has revealed that Spider-Man will be a playable hero in the game, as well as an October release date.

Shown during the Summer Games Fest Showcase, the cinematic trailer revealed a new hero that will be an unlockable character for your team roster: Spider-Man. Even better, he'll be voiced by Yuri Lowenthal (although he's not playing the same Spider-Man as he does in the PlayStation games, this is not a crossover or set in the same slice of the Marvel multiverse.) We were also provided Midnight Suns’ release date: October 7, 2022.

That release date covers the PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC versions. Midnight Suns will also release on Nintendo Switch, but at a later date.

The trailer for developer Firaxis’ tactical RPG based on Marvel’s darker storylines also showed off main villain Lilith, the Mother of Demons, who was accompanied by corrupted versions of Venom, Sabertooth, Scarlet Witch, and the Hulk. Playing as a new, original superhero known as The Hunter, it will be your job to assemble a group of heroes to take down Lilith and her Hydra allies. Doctor Strange, Iron Man, and Blade will be some of the numerous Marvel heroes available for your team roster.

“We know fans have been eager to see what’s coming next for Marvel’s Midnight Suns,” said Jake Solomon, Creative Director at Firaxis Games. “We’re honored by the opportunity to introduce so many new heroes and villains to Marvel fans and can’t wait for tactics players to discover the joys of fighting like a Super Hero in Marvel’s Midnight Suns!”

Marvel's Midnight Suns: The First Preview

1 year 11 months ago

I was a bit blindsided by the news that the team behind XCOM 2 was working on a Marvel tactics RPG with a card-based battle system. When I finally got my hands on Midnight Suns recently, I was even more surprised – by just how much of an RPG it really is. With a fully explorable quest hub, party member relationship side quests, and even a crafting system, this really is a first for Firaxis. At times it reminded me more of a BioWare game than anything they've made before. And who doesn't want to hang out with Spider-Man?

The set-up is a reimagining of an early 90s comic story arc – that's Midnight Sons, with an O. Though readers of the comics should rest assured this isn't exactly the same story by any means, mainly borrowing a few broad plot elements and cool little details. Hydra, everyone's favorite secret society of supervillain fascists, have resurrected the Demon Queen Lilith, who the devs describe as being on the same level as Thanos, power-wise. That's pretty bad. And to make matters worse, she has the ability to corrupt and dominate all kinds of heroes and villains. I faced off against Fallen Venom, and we also know demonic versions of Hulk and Scarlet Witch will be joining the forces of evil at some point.

Ex-Blizzard Devs Announce Stormgate, a New Post-Apocalypse RTS

1 year 11 months ago

Frost Giant, a studio made up of ex-Blizzard staff, has announced Stormgate, a new real-time strategy set in a post-apocalyptic future.

Revealed as part of the Summer Game Fest Showcase, our first look at Stormgate is via a cinematic trailer that shows an archeologist piecing together an ancient shield. Her discovery is quickly interrupted by demonic forces, although thankfully a mech-clad ally with rockets and miniguns is able to save our hero from a grisly fate.

Alongside the trailer, Frost Giant has revealed that Stormgate is a PC real-time strategy that will be free-to-play. It will have both a story-driven campaign and multiplayer modes, with co-op play integrated across the entire game. Campaign missions can be played with a friend, while a 3vE mode allows three players to team up against AI enemies. While classic 1v1 ranked matches form the backbone of competitive multiplayer, 3v3 team battles allow co-op elements to be found in the PvP side of Stormgate.

Stormgate will also feature an in-game editor to allow custom games to be made by players and shared among the community. Other features include a fully-integrated tournament system for in-client esports, and the ability to spectate matches and use learning tools to enhance your own skills.

The game’s lore begins hundreds of years into the future, when humanity’s homeworld has been near-destroyed by the Infernals, a race of alien demons that emerged from portal-like Stormgates. The Infernals are set to return and threaten the remnants of humanity, and so should mankind wish to succeed in rebuilding its home, it’s going to need a whole lot of mechs.

Sci-fi Horror Routine Re-Revealed, a Decade After Its Original Announcement

1 year 11 months ago

Routine has been re-revealed, a decade after being announced – it's now coming to PC, Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One (and will launch into Game Pass).

Shown at Summer Game Fest, a trailer began with a creepy VHS vibe, before progressing to an even creepier "this space station is haunted by big chittering robots" vibe. Doom 2016 composer Mick Gordon provides the score.

The new synopsis reads, "Routine is a first-person sci-fi horror game. Set inside an abandoned Lunar base designed around an 80’s vision of the future, players will explore the decrepit station looking for answers about the events that unfolded there. Armed only with a Cosmonaut Assistance Tool (C.A.T.), to interact with the various computer systems, players must navigate whatever unknown dangers still remain."

Routine was announced in 2012, it's not clear exactly how much has changed since that original reveal, but publisher Raw Fury says developer Lunar Software has "has rebuilt the game from the ground up to align with the experience they originally set out to deliver."

Fort Solis Revealed as a Sci-Fi Horror With Major Voice Acting Chops Behind It

1 year 11 months ago

Today at Summer Game Fest, a joint project with voice acting talent Roger Clark and Troy Baker was revealed from European independent studio Fallen Leaf. It's called Fort Solis, and it's a sci-fi thriller set on a Mars mining outpost.

Baker (The Last of Us, Uncharted, BioShock Infinite) plays Wyatt Taylor, a medical officer at Fort Solis who, per Baker, is "at times in opposition with Roger's character." Clark (Red Dead Redemption 2), then, plays Jack Leary, a maintenance engineer on the remote Martian mining post whose job it is to make sure no equipment breaks down.

As Baker explains, Fort Solis is intended to be a "tight thriller," something like a blend between Dead Space and a Duncan Jones film. Gameplay includes exploration elements through multiple locations, including multiple ways to traverse. And the narrative is apparently a "huge element."

Fort Solis' Steam page describes it as a single-player, third-person thriller set over a single night on the far side of Mars. It opens with Jack Leary responding to a routine alarm, but things quickly escalate out of control.

Fort Solis is currently only announced for PC via Steam, and no release date has been given yet. It's being made in Unreal Engine 5. For more news and announcements from the entirety of Summer of Gaming, check out our watch guide.

New Witchfire Footage Revealed, Early Access Coming Soon

1 year 11 months ago

A new look at Witchfire gameplay -- the first in quite some time -- was revealed at the Summer Game Fest today, with early access via the Epic Games Store coming soon.

The upcoming fantasy first-person shooter is being developed by Polish independent studio The Astronauts, the same studio behind Painkiller, Bullerstorm, and The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. It was initially announced in 2017, when its first trailer was unveiled at The Game Awards.

A description of the game reads: "Desperate for a chance to triumph in the deadly war against witches, the Church calls on forbidden pagan magic to turn willing sinners into immortal witch hunters called preyers. Armed with powerful spells and fearsome firearms conjured by the best Vatican sorcerers, your mission is to find the infamous witch of the Black Sea, destroy the phantom army that protects her, and retrieve a mysterious artifact that can finally turn the tide of war."

The studio clarified in a blog post published after the reveal that they're aiming to release it in early access in Q4 2022. They also said they'll be releasing it on other platforms later down the line. This reveal doesn't mean Witchfire is back to regular updates, though.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Extended Campaign Gameplay Revealed

1 year 11 months ago

Summer Game Fest has offered up a look at a full level from the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's campaign.

The mission, called Dark Water, features your squad of soldiers infiltrating a stormy oil rig in the middle of the ocean in classic FPS fashion. Only a very minimal UI is visible as the team works its way up the rig toward a missle launcher at the top – before realizing the controls to it are on a shipping boat just off the rig.

After making their way to the ship, an extended combat scene sees the team fighting across the deck of the boat as shipping containers and water slide across it, providing both cover and hazards. The level concludes with the bridge of the ship being breached, but ends there before we actually get to see inside.

After the gameplay, Jeff Negus from Infinity Ward gave names to some of the new and returning characters in the campaign, including Captain John Price, Kyle "Gaz" Garrick, Simon "Ghost" Riley, John "Soap" MacTavish, Commander Phillip Graves, and Colonel Alejandro Rojas. While Call of Duty GM Johanna Faries confirmed that it will be an extension of the Modern Warfare universe, she also said further details would have to wait until later on.

The Callisto Protocol: First Extended Gameplay Revealed

1 year 11 months ago

The first extended gameplay from The Callisto Protocol – the new game from Dead Space creator Glen Schofield – has been revealed at Summer Game Fest.

The two-minute long gameplay footage clip shows something very similar to Dead Space; we've got a gross third-person shooter in a sci-fi universe, with plenty of heavy architecture and slimy gore. Opening on a segment in a medical bay, we see holograms of previous patients gone mad beating up medical staff. Those holograms soon make way for real monsters, which we see picked up and slammed into walls using an anti-gravity weapon called the Grip. In a second segment we the Grip being used to throw monsters into fans, as well as our hero being pulled into a piece of machinery himself. Just like in Dead Space, the deaths are... grisy. Very grisly.

The Callisto Protocol is due for release on December 2, bringing third-person survival horror to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The Callisto Protocol was originally was originally supposed to be set in the same universe as PUBG, but it was recently announced that was no longer the case

Aliens: Dark Descent Officially Announced

1 year 11 months ago

Aliens: Dark Descent has been announced, and it looks like a squad-based, top-down shooter.

Revealed at Summer Game Fest, Aliens: Dark Descent was revealed in a cinematic trailer very reminiscent of James Cameron's take on the Aliens universe, with hordes of Xenomorphs hunting down a team of space marines.

The trailer ends with a brief look at the gameplay where squads of Marines are shown fighting off waves of Aliens in a top-down perspective.

It's unclear how these marines will be controlled and whether it is co-op, but this appears to be taking a squad-based approach to combat rather than a solo adventure like in games like Alien: Isolation.

In 1986, James Cameron released a bigger and badder sequel with more Xenomorphs hunting down a larger team of armed space marines. It was a very different tone than the horror-vibe of Ridley Scott's original Alien, but some prefer the different flavor of Cameron's sequel,

Check out IGN for a full rundown of all the new announcements from Summer Game Fest.

Saudi Arabia Buys $1 Billion Share of Giant Gaming Group, Embracer

1 year 11 months ago

The Swedish, giant gaming group, Embracer, has had $1 billion in shares purchased by Saudi Arabia.

Embracer is the parent company to numerous publishing and development studios like THQ Nordic, Saber Interactive, and Gearbox Entertainment.

Once the deal is completed, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), via its subsidiary, Savvy Gaming Group, will be the second-largest owner of Embracer group shares. According to a press release from Embracer, this will give Savvy “approximately 8.1 percent of the shares and 5.4 percent of the votes in the Company.”

In the press release, Lars Wingefors, CEO of Embracer said, “Our relationship with Savvy Gaming Group will enable us to set up a regional hub in Saudi Arabia, from which we will be able to make investments across the MENA region, either organically, via partnerships, joint ventures, or via acquisitions of companies led by strong entrepreneurs.”

PIF is a fund chaired by Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman. Prince Salaman’s goal is to make the country less dependent on oil. Early last year, he invested billions in stocks in Take-Two, EA, and Activision-Blizzard. Earlier this year, Savvy Gaming Group acquired two of the world’s biggest esports companies for $1.5 billion.

Metro 2033 Writer Added to Russia's Wanted List for Speaking out Against War

1 year 11 months ago

Dmitry Glukhovsky, best known for writing the novel-turned-game Metro 2033, has been added to Russia’s wanted list for speaking out against the war, according to Reuters.

Russia has accused him of “of spreading false information about its military intervention in Ukraine," after the author criticized the invasion of Ukraine.

On Instagram, Glukhovsky wrote, “Stop the war! Admit that this is a war against an entire nation and stop it!" After his post, which he has said he stands by, Russia’s Interior Ministry website listed him “as wanted under an unspecified article of the criminal code,” Reuters reports.

Glukhovsky, who also wrote the novel that inspired the game Metro Exodus, is the first big-name cultural figure to be targeted by the law that went into effect in late February. But there have been a number of journalists and other well-known figures who’ve opposed Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine. Those who have outwardly opposed Russia face up to 15 years in jail for purposefully spreading “fake” news about Russia.

The Last of Us Remake Leaks: Arriving in September for PS5, PC Version on the Way

1 year 11 months ago

The long-rumored remake of The Last of Us has been leaked – and it's now officially referred to as The Last of Us Part 1. It will be released for PS5 on September 2, and a PC version is in development.

Seemingly unwittingly revealed by Sony's own PlayStation Direct site, the listing was picked up by ResetEra user modiz. While the listing itself has been removed, at time of writing a trailer is still available to view. The remake will include upgraded versions of the base game, and its DLC prequel, Left Behind. No mention is made of the Factions multiplayer mode.

The listing calls the remake "a total overhaul of the original experience, faithfully reproduced but incorporating modernized gameplay, improved controls and expanded accessibility options. Plus, feel immersed with improved effects and enhanced exploration and combat."

Upload VR Showcase June 2022: Everything Announced, Including More Among US VR Gameplay

1 year 11 months ago

Moss: Book 2 officially has a release date on Meta Quest 2; the creators of What the Golf are now embracing bats, and we now have a much clearer understanding of Among Us VR. All of this news was revealed in today’s Upload VR showcase, which included multiple announcements for the Meta Quest 2 and other major VR headsets.

Check out our full list of everything announced during Upload VR’s event, which includes everything mentioned above, as well as plenty more updates and reveals:

Among Us VR Reveals How It’s Practically a Sequel to the 2020 Megahit

A brand-new trailer showcased Among Us VR’s gameplay, revealing an experience that feels in many ways wildly different from the game that became a megahit in 2020. The stealth, backstabbing, and outright lying are all still there, but negotiations are much more than a text box — now you’re actually at the table. The VR changes basically everything, from the basic tasks to the jolt of fear when you turn and find another crewmember just… staring at you. It remains to be seen if these updates will actually work well in the final version, but at first blush, Among Us VR feels almost like a full-blown sequel. It’s currently scheduled for a release in Holiday 2022 on Meta Quest and PC VR devices.

Moss: Book II Gets A Release Date For Meta Quest 2

1 year 11 months ago

Polyarc has revealed that Moss: Book II is headed to Meta Quest 2 on July 21, marking the first time that the game has jumped to another platform since its initial launch on PlayStation VR earlier this year.

Moss: Book II picks up shortly after the ending of the original game, but the sequel leans much more heavily into its narrative, while also providing new weapons, locations, and creative puzzles to solve. Players once again take on dual roles by directly controlling tiny mouse protagonist Quill while also interacting with the world to solve environmental puzzles from afar as the all-seeing Reader.

Though the overall experience will remain intact in its move to Quest 2, Moss: Book II will feature some visual and interaction changes, such as taking advantage of the headset's unique two-controller design, which Polyarc states will allow "players to express themselves more freely in the world."

"For this release, we didn't just want to get Book II running on Quest 2 and call it a day, so we took our time diligently balancing all aspects of the game, across graphics and gameplay, with the end goal being a truly memorable experience,” said Polyarc technical artist Tyler Walters. “Throughout this process, we were regularly excited by the level of fidelity we were able to achieve on Quest 2, often finding ways to make the game look and play better than ever."

Xbox Allowing Devs to Add Their Demos to Game Pass - and Get Paid for It

1 year 11 months ago

Microsoft has announced Project Moorcroft, a new initiative that will allow developers to release demos straight into the Xbox Game Pass line-up, and earn money for doing so.

In a briefing for media, Corporate Vice President, Sarah Bond explained that Xbox has seen fewer and fewer opportunities for developers to put games on event showfloors and present them directly to potential fans – and pointed out that this could harm smaller developers struggling to be seen in an online space.

"So we said, you know what, what don't we take Game Pass and make it like the showfloor?," Bond continued. "Why don't we make it possible for developers to take a piece, a level of their game, release it into Game Pass, generate excitement for what's coming, and also get that really valuable feedback as they're tuning and preparing their game for launch?"

Asked by Head of Xbox Game Studios, Matt Booty why a developer would spend valuable time making a demo instead of working directly on their game, Bond added the positive kicker for developers becoming a part of Moorcroft:

"It's important to us that everything we do has benefit for both our players and for creators," Bond replied. "So as part of this, we've set up the program and structured it so that the develoeprs get financial compensation for the game - it actually benefits them financially - and also get the benefit of the great feedback as well."

Xbox Cloud Gaming to Let You Stream Games You Own, Even If They're Not in Game Pass

1 year 11 months ago

Xbox's game streaming services have so far been limited to titles inside the Xbox Game Pass line-up – but that will change later this year.

No release date has been announced as yet, but Xbox says that Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will soon gain the ability to stream select games they own, even if they're not part of Game Pass. No specific titles have been announced as yet, nor has Xbox explained if the intent is to make all games playable through streaming as well as disc/download.

It appears no such option is coming for game owners that are not subscribers to Game Pass Ultimate.

Speaking in a briefing for media, CVP of Gaming Experiences & Platforms, Ashley McKissick said, "Gamers are not shy with their feedback, which is awesome. And so one of the things that they told us, it's like, 'Hey, we would love to be able to stream games that we own even if they're not in the Game Pass catalog.'

"And so later this year if you are an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate member, you will be able to stream from the cloud games you purchase and also games you already own as long as they're cloud enabled in the catalog."

Microsoft's Activision Bizzard Acquisition: Execs Discuss Exclusives and Game Pass

1 year 11 months ago

Microsoft has discussed its plans for Activision Blizzard's games after its intended acquisition of the gaming giant, from how it won't make multi-platform games exclusive, to its plans for putting titles into Game Pass.

Speaking during a briefing for media, Head of Xbox Game Studios, Matt Booty addressed the issue of exclusives, and tried to put fans' minds at ease about existing multiplatform games they might love outside of Xbox:

"If we acquire a game that comes with a big community across a number of platforms," Booty began, "the last thing we want to do is take something away. If anything, we feel that it's our job to be caretakers, to be shepherds, to continue to build and nurture that community, not to cut it up into pieces and try to take some of it away."

This appears to be Microsoft's philosophy for existing games, and perhaps series, given we've heard that Xbox will release multiple new Call of Duty games as multiplatform titles (although it's not clear if that will continue indefinitely). GM for Programming and Events Tina Summerford pointed to Xbox's previous acquisition of Minecraft – and how that game has expanded across new platforms since the purchase – as proof of that philosophy.

However, Summerford did make clear that some games will be exclusive – these would presumably be brand new titles from Activision-Blizzard developers, rather than existing ones.

Ghostbusters VR is Coming to PlayStation VR2

1 year 11 months ago

As part of Ghostbusters Day celebrations, Sony Pictures VR announced today that its upcoming title Ghostbusters VR will be coming to the PlayStation VR2.

Ghostbusters VR was announced last April during the Meta Quest Gaming Showcase, where it was first announced to be coming to the Quest 2. nDreams, the studio behind Far Cry VR: Dive Into Insanity and Phantom: Covert Opps, is developing Ghostbusters VR.

Set in San Francisco, players will have the opportunity to run their own ghost-busting business. Sony Picture VR previously confirmed that the game is set "in modern day and maybe slightly in the future," but the game is not a direct follow-up to any of the Ghostbusters movies, including Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

Ghostbusters VR is the latest game to be announced for Sony's forthcoming gaming headset, the PlayStation VR2. Last week Sony had a roughly 30-minute State of Play where several games were confirmed to be in development for the headset, including VR support for Resident Evil Village and an extended look at Horizon: Call of the Mountain. Other games confirmed to be in development for PSVR2 include Among Us VR and No Man's Sky.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Netflix Series Arrives in September

1 year 11 months ago

Netflix has revealed that its Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will premiere in September along with an official clip from the new anime series.

Previously only confirmed to be a 2022 release, Netflix gave fans a month to look forward to during day three of its Geeked Week showcase. The trailer starts fairly slowly, before speeding through several chaotic clips of the Cyberpunk 2077-connected anime, showing off some pretty gruesome scenes that reveal Edgerunners to be just as R-Rated as the game.

Sticking to the aesthetic of both the game and overall cyberpunk genre, Edgerunners is colorful and flashy, whether it's the bright lights of Night City or explosions of blood in the series' brutal fight scenes.
