New Monster Hunter World: Iceborne Update Will Add Layered Weapons Feature

4 years 1 month ago

Get ready hunters, the third Monster Hunter World: Iceborne update will hit March 23 for PS4 and Xbox One. As previously announced, two new monsters, Raging Brachydios and Furious Rajang, will be part of the update. In the Developer Diary 5 broadcasted on March 21, the dev team shared a lot more details about what fighting those two monsters will entail, but also revealed that layered weapons will be a new feature.

Layered weapons have been an add-on that Monster Hunter fans have clamored for before (a lot of "Finally!" comments showed up during the broadcast), and it basically means that players can alter the appearance of their weapon without changing its stats. The update on March 23 will roll out phase one of the layered weapons feature, and the second wave will arrive in April.

The first wave will allow you to customize certain weapons, specifically those that have a clear base and attachment to them. Players can swap them out however they want. In April's second wave, players will be able to change the appearance of unique weapon designs, but only on weapons that can be augmented.

Best Streaming Accessories 2020: How To Start Streaming On Twitch, YouTube, And More

4 years 1 month ago

Video game streaming is a popular and fun way to play games, entertain an audience, and interact with your friends and viewers. However, it can be incredibly confusing when it comes to getting started and figuring out what you need. That's why we've tested a multitude of products--from microphones and capture cards to webcams and gaming headsets--to help you find the best streaming accessories that are perfect for Twitch, YouTube, Mixer, or anywhere else.

If you want to start streaming, then there are some things you need to consider. First and foremost, you need a PC that is capable of streaming. As for the type of accessories you'll need, the bare essentials tend to be a capture card, microphone, headphones, and webcam. Some of the accessories that'll improve your stream (but aren't exactly necessary) include a second monitor and a controller like Elgato's Streamdeck.

Of course, there are plenty of professional-grade products that producers and top-tier streamers take advantage of, but in this guide, we've focused on products that are affordable and accessible to those who want to start streaming or improve their setup. All of these microphones, capture cards, and other accessories are excellent and easy-to-use, and if you're looking to get started, then this guide will be perfect for you.

Two More Free Games Available On Steam

4 years 1 month ago

Square Enix has joined the growing number of publishers offering free games to pass the time while we practice social distancing. From now until March 24, you can grab a pair of Tomb Raider games--the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot and Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris--completely free of charge on Steam, and they are yours to keep.

Tomb Raider (2013) reinvigorated the classic action-adventure series, offering a new origin story that chronicles Lara's turn from an academic to a burgeoning explorer. Often compared to the Uncharted series in terms of style and gameplay, Tomb Raider features a stellar campaign with excellent combat mechanics and plenty of secrets to uncover. If you somehow haven't played it yet, now's the perfect time. Both Tomb Raider sequels are also steeply discounted on Steam. Rise of the Tomb Raider is down to $9 and Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition is $19.58.

The 2014 Tomb Raider spin-off Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris is a different kind of adventure. Whereas Tomb Raider offers an engrossing single-player campaign, Temple of Osiris leans into arcade co-op action and is lighter on story. Played from an isometric perspective just like its predecessor Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, Temple of Osiris sees you and up to three friends exploring Egyptian tombs filled with gods and monsters to vanquish. You can play drop-in-drop-out with friends and family either online or locally.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons -- How To Get A Shovel

4 years 1 month ago

Animal Crossing: New Horizons takes place on your very own deserted island, and as such, you have to work for some of the things you want. Luckily, the game gives you most of the tools you need right away. However, the shovel is notably absent from the start. Here's how to get it.

First, you're going to need a fishing rod or a net. Catch five different bugs and/or fish and give them to Tom Nook at Resident Services; he'll call up his friend Blathers the museum curator, and Blathers will show up on your the next day. There's nothing you can do to accelerate this part, so you'll just have to go to wait.

Once Blathers has set up his tent, go talk to him--he'll give you the DIY schematics for the shovel. You'll need hardwood to make it, so take a flimsy axe to some trees to get wood (don't worry, it won't chop down the tree). Once you have enough, you can craft a shovel at any DIY bench.

Doom Eternal Demands To Be Played On Hard Difficulty

4 years 1 month ago

As a kid, I would sometimes play a little game with myself. I grew up in the suburbs, where nothing was ever particularly exciting or dangerous, and so to give myself a thrill while walking home, I'd pretend as if I were being chased by a murderer. Despite being a figment of my imagination, the thought of the pursuer nipping at my heels would send me into a frenzied dash for home. My chest would feel tight, my palms would sweat. I wouldn't dare turn around, because to do so would be to confront certain death.

This is precisely what it's like to play Doom Eternal on higher difficulties, only this frightening experience eventually leads to a different type of relief. It's not that of escape as you safely make it inside your front door, but the type of relief you get by eviscerating a ton of demons in the most brutal way possible.

I loved 2016's Doom, but I would always make a plea to anyone I recommended it to: Give it a real chance on a harder difficulty, specifically Ultra-Violence. I'm not the sort of person who thinks you never really played Halo if you didn't beat it on Legendary, but harder difficulties in Doom emphasized the frantic combat and constant movement that distinguished it from most other shooters. You were never safe and had to keep moving to survive, carefully picking your spots to engage or pull off a Glory Kill to restore your health.

PSA: Don't Play Destiny 2's Trials Of Osiris Until Saturday Night

4 years 1 month ago

Destiny 2 players who were excited for the return of the Trials of Osiris tournament this weekend are going to want to hold off from jumping into the game's toughest PvP activity. A new bug is preventing the Trials from dropping its loot, and Bungie says you'll have to wait until Saturday night to replay the tournament if you want your rewards.

Bungie tweeted Friday that it was investigating a bug that prevented Trials from dishing out its special, Trials-themed loot drops, a bug the GameSpot Trials verified after we ran some matches ourselves. Bungie's latest update on the situation has a fix, of sorts. The weekly challenges for Trials are going live at 5 PM PT / 8 PM ET on Saturdays from here on out, it seems, rather than at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET on Fridays with the daily reset.

What Island Name Are You Using For Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

4 years 1 month ago

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is officially here, and it's a welcome reprieve from some of the doom and gloom of our current social distancing times. It's the sort of relaxing game that couldn't come at a better time. But just a few minutes into the game, you'll be faced with a potentially difficult decision, and one you can't change without abandoning your save file entirely: What do you name your island?

If you're anything like me, you've spent recent days agonizing over what to squeeze in that 10-character limit. Do I just go with the name of something I love, like Twin Peaks? Do I just see what kind of nonsense word comes out of my mouth and go with it? Reference an obscure joke from a Netflix comedy that very few people will understand? (Winner!)

Everyone has their own approach to naming their island, and so we've rounded up many of those we here at GameSpot have decided to use along with explanations for some of them. Be sure to let us know what you used--or are considering--in the comments below.

Call Of Duty: Warzone Popularity Grows As It Surpasses Another Milestone

4 years 1 month ago

After a little more than a week on the market, Infinity Ward and Raven Software's standalone battle royale experience Call of Duty: Warzone has surpassed more than 30 million players across all platforms.

This news comes not long after Infinity Ward introduced a dedicated Solo mode to the free-to-play game. While there was a way to play Warzone all by yourself, and we definitely didn't recommend it at the time, the battle royale game now allows players to go one-on-one against 149 other combatants. The current 150-player count could increase to 200 at some point, according to Infinity Ward.

One Of The Best Switch Games Is Discounted On The Eshop

4 years 1 month ago

Everyone needs fun distractions right about now, and what better way to occupy your mind than playing an engrossing puzzler? Nintendo Switch owners can grab a few stellar puzzle games right now for discounted prices. The standout game is Baba is You, one of the most inventive puzzle games in recent memory, which is on sale for $11.25 (was $15) until March 25.

In Baba is You, players control the titular rabbit-like creature--who also happens to be you--across more than 200 top-down levels. Blocks are scattered about the screen representing objects and properties of said objects, all of which make up the "rules" of each level. For instance, you'll find blocks labeled "wall" and "stop." When strung together with the word block "is," walls will stop you from making progress. That's a very basic explanation of Baba is You's mechanics. The level difficulty quickly ramps up, and Baba is You shows its true strength: breaking the rules. The end goal is to reach the flag in each level, but who is to say that the flag or even Baba can't change their identities? Baba is You asks you to put your serious thinking cap on. It's one of the best logic puzzlers I've ever played.

If you like puzzlers but don't want to think that hard, the Devolver Digital-published Pikuniku is on sale for just $1 (was $12) until March 27. Pikuniku is a weird game starring a quirky red creature with an oval head, no body, and two skinny legs. Pikuniku's world is filled with colorful characters and lighthearted humor. It's more of a puzzle-exploration game with some platforming elements than a puzzle game, but it's definitely a charming game that the whole family can enjoy.

Hunt: Showdown Update Now Live On PS4 And Xbox One, Full Patch Notes Revealed

4 years 1 month ago

Developer Crytek's survival shooter, Hunt: Showdown, has a brand-new patch on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One that addresses a number of issues, including input lag, performance and stability, and more.

The biggest change Hunt's update introduces is a fix to latency. According to a developer note, Crytek "shaved off the most outstanding delays Hunt had between player input and on-screen responses." The studio said the patch, which is focused solely on consoles, should make aiming more responsive. Input lag hasn't been totally eliminated, but rather, as Crytek continues to investigate latency issues, "the changes [the studio has] done now will already present a world of difference in the quality of [Hunt's] experience."

The patch also makes a bunch of other adjustments to Hunt. These include stabilizing the game to prevent crashes, increasing the gamma on PS4 to brighten "extremely dark locations," and more. You can check out the full Hunt: Showdown patch notes below.

Animal Crossing And Doom Eternal Day Brings Industry Together

4 years 1 month ago

The dual release date for the cuddly and wholesome Animal Crossing: New Horizons and the death metal demon-ripping Doom Eternal led to a playful kinship between fans, including some lovely crossover art. Now that the big day is upon us, it seems as if the whole industry is getting in on the kudos for Nintendo and Id Software, with tweets of support and their own professional fandom appearing across social media channels.

Some of the posts are sincere congrats or silly jokes. Some are directed at one game or the other, though many of them celebrate both in some way. Sea of Thieves and Battlefield seem to have made the same joke, while Arkane gave a back-pat to Id Software as a fellow Texas developer.

The outspoken indie publisher Devolver said it simply closed up shop entirely for the day so that its employees could play the two games. Asked to clarify if this was the actual policy, GameSpot received the reply, "Absolutely."

Animal Crossing And Doom Join Forces In Metal Music Video

4 years 1 month ago

March 20 marked the launches of both Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Doom Eternal. They are extremely different games, and it can be difficult to choose which one to play first. 3D animator Andrei Mishanin decided to avoid the decision entirely by putting them together in a roaring metal music video.

DOOMANIMAL stars the Animal Crossing cast as they headbang and rock out to Doom music. Isabelle is on drums, slamming the kit as hard as her little paws manage before delivering an incredible fill. The guitars rage, the bass grooves, and Tom Nook stands in the background playing his synthesizer as he plots how to take his bandmates' money from them.

They aren't playing for an empty theater, either, as an audience of villagers has formed a rave. It's the perfect show to attend before diving into the demon-slaughtering action of Doom Eternal, though it's a little intense to watch before playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered Appears To Be Coming

4 years 1 month ago

Activision Blizzard remastered the original Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in 2017, and the company appears primed to give its sequel the same makeover treatment. The South Korean ratings board has apparently leaked the game.

The Game Rating and Administration Committee (GRAC) site has a listing for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered, registered on February 26. Given the name, this is just a remaster of the campaign, not the multiplayer. Modern Warfare Remastered did include its own game's multiplayer with new tweaks and achievements. This doesn't necessarily mean it will be missing from the final MW2 Remastered product, though, as that listing could simply be separate.

None of this is to be confused with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, the relaunch of the Modern Warfare series that released last year. That's currently getting a ton of ongoing content with ongoing seasons and battle passes. Most recently it added the battle royale Warzone, which is free to all players regardless of whether you own the base game, and gives you the same cosmetic battle pass rewards.

P.T. Video Shows Lisa's Terrifying Hidden Movements

4 years 1 month ago

P.T. was already one of the most terrifying gaming experiences of all time when it first released in 2015, and a large part of that was the villain Lisa. She would appear behind you at unexpected moments, and a new video shows just how the creepy ghoul functioned behind the scenes.

YouTube user Lance McDonald examined how Lisa's obscured or implied appearances functioned in P.T., a demo that was originally meant to tease the canceled Silent Hills game. He first made his way up into the upper level of the house, where you never actually travel in the standard version of the demo. Here, we see that during Lisa's first appearance, she stares down at the floor for several seconds before falling back and disappearing.

One of the most frightening sections of P.T. occurs when attempting to look into a cracked bathroom door. Lisa yells and slams the door shut, but as McDonald shows from inside the bathroom, she actually only materializes a moment before doing this and then vanishes again.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons -- What To Do On Your First Day

4 years 1 month ago

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is now available, which means it's time to get your new island life started. Like previous Animal Crossing games, time in New Horizons passes as is does in real life--and you often have to wait until the following day or days to see the effects of what you're doing. We've outlined everything you should do on day one on your new island so you can maximize your early progress.

The game switches to a real-time clock after you complete the tutorial section--it ends when you go to sleep after the party. Luckily, Tom Nook's Resident Services tent is open 24 hours a day, so if you start your game later in the day, you won't be missing out on anything. You can talk to Tommy and Tom Nook to get some direction, and one of the first things you should do after the tutorial is enroll in Tom Nook's DIY workshop so you can start crafting important things.

Once you're able, craft a flimsy net and flimsy fishing rod. Catch some bugs and fish and then give five of them to Tom Nook--this will start the process of bringing the museum to your island. Doing this day one is important, because Blathers, the museum curator, will give you access to the shovel and vaulting pole when he arrives the next day.

While the store available on the mobile application won’t be fully-fledged at launch, those who purchased the Galaxy Pass+ will still have access once the update rolls out on both mobile and PC.

The only main difference between the mobile and PC editions is the type of currency used; on mobile it will no longer be the usual RP. Instead, it will display your local currency, with costs converting to as close as possible to the RP equivalent. For more on how this works, check out the Teamfight Tactics developer blog.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Able Sisters Clothing Shop Unlock Guide

4 years 1 month ago

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has a staggering amount of clothing and accessories to try on and wear. There is a smorgasbord of options for customizing your character, but if you want more options than what's available at the start, you're going to need the Able Sisters and their masterful tailoring skills.

Below we explain how to unlock the Able Sisters clothing shop on your island. If you're curious about how to unlock or upgrade other buildings and more, be sure to check out our Animal Crossing: New Horizons guide hub. Otherwise, be sure to read our review in progress.

How To Unlock The Able Sisters Clothing Shop

Unlocking the Able Sisters clothing shop is going to take a bit longer than other buildings on your island, as it requires Mabel to visit your island three times. Like many of the other visiting NPCs, her coming to visit the island is random. While you may be lucky enough for her to visit a few times in your first week, it may take around two weeks for the whole process to finish.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Campsite Unlock Guide -- How To Invite New Villagers To Your Island

4 years 1 month ago

In a bid to attract more residents to the island, Tom Nook asks you to help construct a campsite for the town in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. This immediately follows the completion of the Resident Services building once you enter for the first time post-construction. Once you have a campsite, random villagers may come to visit, and from there you can even invite them to move to your island. The campsite is also integral to Amiibo integration, which we detail below.

Below we explain how to unlock the campsite on your island. If you're curious about how to unlock or upgrade other buildings and more, be sure to check out our Animal Crossing: New Horizons guide hub. Otherwise, be sure to read our review in progress.

How To Unlock The Campsite

Tom Nook will ask you to figure out where you want the campsite to be, so go out and find the perfect place you want visiting villagers to commune and set up their tents. Like with most other buildings, after you've placed the campsite plans down on your island, construction will begin the next day and will take the entire day to complete. Once it has been completed, it's worth noting that there's no guarantee that a villager will visit right away.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Resident Services Building Unlock Guide -- How To Get Isabelle To Your Island

4 years 1 month ago

While the Resident Services tent works well for the first week or so on the island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, it starts to lack the resources to accommodate your villagers as your lovely home begins to change from deserted island to bustling coastal town. In response to this expanding scope, Nook decides to upgrade from a tent to a building fully equipped to manage a proper town.

Below we detail the step-by-step process of upgrading the Resident Services tent to a real building. If you're curious about how to unlock or upgrade other buildings, be sure to check out our Animal Crossing: New Horizons guide hub. Otherwise, be sure to read our review in progress.

How To Unlock The Resident Services Building

You may be eager to get your Resident Services building up and running, but unfortunately, the only way to upgrade it is with time. After a week or so (for us, it happened on the sixth day), Tom Nook will announce that the Resident Services building will go under construction the following day. It will be completed a day after that (so the eighth day in our case).

Doom Eternal Devs Release A Nice Video Message To Celebrate The Game's Long-Awaited Launch

4 years 1 month ago

Originally due to launch in November 2019, Doom Eternal has finally, at long last, arrived for everyone to play (except Switch owners). To celebrate the release that's been a long time coming, developers Hugo Martin (game director) and Marty Stratton (executive producer) released a nice video message, thanking the developers for their hard work and more.

"On behalf of everyone at id Software, Bethesda, and everyone who's worked so hard on this game, we want to take this opportunity to say thanks," Stratton said. Martin added, "So many great people put in so much work to make this day possible, and we really just want to thank everyone involved."

Doom Eternal was delayed from November to March to give the team at id Software more time to polish the game, and their efforts appeared to have paid off. Doom Eternal is picking up great review scores across the board, including an 8/10 from GameSpot in our review in progress.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Bug Guide

4 years 1 month ago

Deserted islands are usually rife with insects, and your new island adventure in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is no exception. Bugs can be found and caught all over the island at any point during the year. Bugs can be sold for money, given as gifts, donated to the museum, or displayed as furniture. What you do with them is up to you.

To catch a bug, approach it with your net equipped, taking care to hold down A to sneak up slowly. Once you're within reach, release the A button and your net will spring forward to grab the critter. If you miss, you might be able to nab the bug by mashing the A button, but sometimes bugs will flee. It takes practice, so don't be discouraged if you find that you're scaring away more bugs than you're catching at first.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has a total of 80 insects, which is eight more than in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Below, we go over everything that can affect how and when bugs spawn. You'll also find a table listing all the bugs we've caught so far in both the northern and southern hemispheres, their spawn locations and dates/times, and the number of Bells you get for selling them.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Nook's Cranny Building Unlock Guide -- How To Build The General Store

4 years 1 month ago

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the first official building you can construct on your island is Nook's Cranny, a small shop that provides more options than what is on sale inside the Resident Services tent. Here, Timmy and Tommy sell a number of different furniture, wallpaper, and flooring options that change every single day. Basic tools, DIY recipes, medicine, tree saplings, and flower seeds are also for sale.

Below we detail the step-by-step process of unlocking Nook's Cranny on your island. If you're curious about how to unlock other buildings, be sure to check out our Animal Crossing: New Horizons guide hub. Otherwise, be sure to read our review in progress.

How To Unlock Nook's Cranny

On the second day you play the game, Tommy will ask you to help him and his brother build a general store on the island. To do so, you will need to collect a lot of natural resources: 30 wood, 30 softwood, 30 hardwood, and 30 iron. You can get all the wood types by hitting trees with a flimsy axe, which won't cut down the trees, and you can hit rocks with either an axe or a shovel to get iron. We recommend using a shovel and digging two holes behind you before you start hitting the rock; you get more materials out of a rock if you hit it multiple times in quick succession, so bracing yourself beforehand will eliminate recoil and the need to readjust. You should be able to hit the rock eight times and get eight resources out of it if you do it right.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Museum Building Unlock Guide -- How To Get The Museum

4 years 1 month ago

Animal Crossing: New Horizons wouldn't be complete without Blathers the owl and his museum. Like in previous games, collecting every type of fossil, bug, and fish is a huge part of the gameplay in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, so having a place to show off your collection is important. The museum fills in that role, showcasing every specimen you have donated in a spectacular way and allowing your villagers and other players to admire your contributions as well.

Below we detail the step-by-step process of building the museum on your island. If you're curious about how to unlock other buildings, be sure to check out our Animal Crossing: New Horizons guide hub. Otherwise, be sure to read our review in progress.

How To Unlock The Museum

From day one you can start the process of unlocking the museum. On your first day on the island, after the tutorial section, Tom Nook will accept five different fish or bugs. He is gathering these in the hopes that the native flora and fauna on the island will be enough to entice Blathers to move to the island. It works, of course--after handing in the fifth specimen, Blathers will ring Tom Nook and agree to arrive on the island the next day.

Xbox Series X Has A Big Advantage Over PS5 For Backwards Compatibility Right Now

4 years 1 month ago

The next-generation of consoles continues to come into focus. Both Microsoft and Sony have shared a lot of details on their new consoles in recent weeks, and one element that is resonating particularly strongly with consumers is their different approaches to backwards compatibility--or, at least, the messaging of how this much-loved feature will be implemented. Right now, based on what we know today, Microsoft's Xbox Series X has a huge advantage over Sony's PlayStation 5 in terms of overall list of supported backwards compatible games and messaging about the feature.

What We Know

Sony's "deep dive" on the PlayStation 5 this week saw PlayStation system architect Mark Cerny giving an extremely developer-focused talk about the technical specifics of the next-gen system. On the subject of backwards compatibility, Cerny mentioned that Sony expected nearly 100 of the most popular PS4 games to be playable on PS5 at launch this holiday.

A subsequent post on the PlayStation Blog offered some additional insight. It reported that "almost" all of the top 100 PS4 titles ranked by play time will be playable at launch for PS5. Sony also stated that there have been more than 4000 titles published on PS4 to date. Doing some quick math on those numbers, it would appear that 2.5 percent of the PS4's catalog will be playable on PS5 at launch. Sony said it is currently in the "testing process" with the aim for expanding the backwards compatibility catalog over time, so the library is sure to grow, but right now it seems likely that some of your favorite PS4 games won't play on PS5 at launch.
