Massive Ghost Recon Breakpoint Update Coming March 24

4 years 2 months ago

Ubisoft has promised a mode that totally overhauls Ghost Recon Breakpoint for quite a while now, and it's finally scheduled to arrive on March 24, according to a tweet from the publisher. However, Ubisoft also notes that the coronavirus outlook is still changing, and that there might be a chance that the patch doesn't come out as scheduled.

"We are currently on track to release TU 2.0.0 on March 24," the tweet reads. "If anything changes due to the evolving situation with COVID-19, we will let you know as soon as possible."

This title update 2.0.0 will add the Ghost Experience to the game, the long-awaited "immersive mode" that allows players to customize how difficult or hardcore they want their experience to be, including removing regenerating health, messing with the HUD, and more. The update will also add the Engineer class to the game, as well as quality-of-life upgrades, like better gear sorting options.

Minecraft Dungeons Might Be Delayed Due To Coronavirus Concerns

4 years 2 months ago

If you're eagerly anticipating the release of Minecraft Dungeons, steel yourself for some bad news. The game's Twitter account recently announced that they may miss their planned release date of April 2020 due to the team behind the game working from home because of coronavirus concerns.

"As we’re working from home to do our part in protecting our community, our workflows will unfortunately be impacted," the tweet reads. "We’re working hard to deliver Minecraft Dungeons in April, but we’re also re-evaluating our timeline to make sure we bring you the best game possible. Stay tuned!"

Minecraft Dungeons is the latest of the many spin-offs of the epoch-defining survival/building franchise. Dungeons is set to be a co-op dungeon crawler inspired by classics of the genre, such as Diablo. The game previously had an open beta late last year, with gameplay footage emerging a few months later. It features an isometric perspective and twitch-based combat.

Doom Eternal Review Roundup

4 years 2 months ago

Doom fans are getting ready to rip and tear their way through the long-awaited sequel to the series' 2016 reboot, and if the reviews are any indication, Doom Eternal delivers. Taking cues from 1994's Doom 2: Hell on Earth, Eternal challenges players to beat back the hordes of Hell from Earth itself, introducing a load of fun new toys for the Doom Slayer to play with.

In general, critics have plenty of positive things to say about the shooter, including our 8/10 review-in-progress. "Once you get the hang of it, though, all of Doom Eternal's many elements come together in a cascade of mayhem that makes you into the brainiest killing machine around," wrote our critic, Phil Hornshaw. "This isn't the kind of shooter in which your twitch reactions and aiming skills will carry you through; Eternal is a game in which you have to be constantly plotting your next move, executing a calculus of carnage to keep yourself alive and make everything else dead. Every moment is about analyzing the battlefield to find the next enemy you can stagger and slice apart for health or ammo, figuring out which enemy is your top priority and what guns you'll need to take it out safely, and where you need to head next in order to take the shots you need or keep the creatures chasing you from getting their own chance to rip and tear."

All The Free Games You Can Grab Right Now

4 years 2 months ago

Being stuck inside can suck big-time, but thankfully, online storefronts and developers are taking note and giving away a bunch of games for free to help us kill the time. Games across PS4, Xbox One, PC, and more are all being given away, and there's even a free-play period coming up for Assassin's Creed Odyssey from March 19-22. Because of this, we've decided to collect all of the games that are currently free for a limited time so you can easily claim any you're interested in. This list won't include any games that are normally free-to-play--like Fortnite, Call of Duty: Warzone, and Apex Legends--but you're sure to find something to fall in love with, whether it's an old PC classic, a must-play iPhone game, or a brand-new game.

Of course, it's important to remember that you may already be subscribed to a service that gives you access to free monthly games. PlayStation Plus, Xbox Live Gold, and Twitch Prime all currently have free games available for the month of March, and more are scheduled to arrive in April.

Apex Legends Evo Shields Will Stay Following System Override Collection Event

4 years 2 months ago

Following the conclusion of Apex Legends' System Override Event, which officially wrapped up on March 17, developer Respawn Entertainment confirmed that the new Evo Shields are here to stay.

This item was exclusive to the Deja Loot LTE. Now that System Override is done, Evo Shields can be seen in Ranked, the quick-play mode Play Apex, and "limited-time modes moving forward."

Evo Shields are upgradeable armor pieces that progressively grow stronger as you deal damage to enemies. Despite it starting out weaker than a common white body shield, rain enough bullets on your opponents and it's possible to upgrade the Evo Shield above a legendary gold body shield. But there's a catch: Evo Shields retain their progress when dropped, so it's likely you or your enemy could come across a fully-upgraded shield on the battlefield.

Call Of Duty: Warzone Solo Mode Now Available After New Update

4 years 2 months ago

While you can play Call of Duty: Warzone by yourself, and we certainly didn't recommend that option when Modern Warfare's standalone battle royale experience first launched on March 10, Infinity Ward and Raven Software have released a full-fledged Solo mode across all platforms for those lone wolves out there.

As the name implies, Warzone's Solo mode pits you against 149 other solo players on the game's Verdansk map. All the normal battle royale rules apply, and both Buy Stations and the Gulag are accessible for players to gear up or fight for revival. Since you are all by your lonesome, Self-Revive Kits are littered throughout the map and available for purchase at Buy Stations to give you a second wind in case you get knocked down.

Warzone's Solo mode will function like a large-scale free-for-all, where the last player standing takes all.

Call Of Duty: Warzone & Modern Warfare Patch Notes For March 17 Update

4 years 2 months ago

Infinity Ward has released a new update for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, as well as a playlist update for the game's multiplayer mode on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. While the majority of the patch notes concern various bug fixes, the big news here is of interest to Warzone players, who now have access to the battle royale game's Solo mode.

Prior to this update, the only playlist in Warzone allowed for teams of three to compete against each other (although you could, technically, join a match without any teammates). Now, you'll be able to do battle without having to worry about enemy squads or anything of the sort--you'll win or (more likely) lose based solely on your own actions.

No Man's Sky Devs Show Gameplay Of Its New Puzzle Game The Last Campfire

4 years 2 months ago

Revealed during Nintendo's latest Indie World stream, No Man's Sky developer Hello Games' latest, smaller project, The Last Campfire, is coming to Nintendo Switch, PC, Xbox One and PS4 in Summer 2020.

Hello Games' emphasizes that the journey is more than just about reaching the destination, with Ember unraveling a meaning to life and rekindling hope in a hopeless world.

Hello Games is seeking to recapture a time within the studio before the popularity of No Man's Sky and the production it required, letting the team experiment with new ideas and express themselves more emotionally through their work.

Two New Switch Games Launching Today After Nintendo Direct Indies Stream

4 years 2 months ago

Nintendo wrapped up its recent Indie World livestream in which the company showcased a bunch of new and recently-revealed games coming to the Switch. And two of them are launching later today.

The former Apple Arcade exclusive Exit the Gungeon is finally making its way to the Switch later today. Developed by Dodge Roll and a sequel to the 2016 bullet-hell twin-stick shooter Enter the Gungeon, Exit the Gungeon tasks players with escaping the very dungeon they fought so hard to reach the bottom of in Enter the Gungeon with one distinct change: instead of a top-down perspective, Exit the Gungeon moves to a 2D platformer view. Apart from this change, however, Exit the Gungeon retains the same roguelike elements as its predecessor. And it's also available on Steam.

Developed by Double Dash Studios as part of a 2015 game jam, the genre-blending shoot-em-up Sky Racket will also be available on the Switch later today. Sky Racket combines the casual fun of a block breaker with the chaos of a bullet-hell to make a quirky co-op shmup bursting with vibrant colors and a cheerful soundtrack. The game originally launched on Steam in October 2019 to a very positive rating.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey Gets Free Play Weekend, Steep Discounts on PS4, Xbox One, And PC

4 years 2 months ago

If you're looking for something to play this weekend, you're in luck. Assassin's Creed Odyssey will be free to play from March 19 to March 22 on Xbox One, PS4, and PC. We'd be wildly impressed if you managed to start and finish the absolutely massive adventure in a four-day span. Either way, it's a great opportunity to check out one of the best action-RPGs in recent years without spending a dime.

The free weekend includes the entire base game, which offers well over 50 hours worth of content. You won't have access to the two DLC story arcs---Legacy of the First Blade and The Fate of Atlantis--that come with the DLC. All players will also get the Ezio's Roman Armor Set courtesy of Ubisoft Club by playing this weekend.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey released in 2018 to rave reviews. It further leans into the role-playing mechanics systems introduced in Assassin's Creed Origins, sending players all the way back to 431 BC. A fictional re-telling of the Peloponnesian War, Odyssey chronicles the struggle between Athens and Sparta. You get to choose between two playable characters, half-siblings Alexios and Kassandra.

Amazon Suspends Stock Intake Of Non-Essential Goods Until April

4 years 2 months ago

Amazon has notified third-party sellers that it will only continue stocking essential items in its warehouses until April 5, due to demand generated by concerns over the coronavirus, or COVID-19.

Amazon, according to a report by Yahoo Finance, has listed six categories that will qualify for continued stocking at its numerous warehouses, where it fulfils deliveries for third-party sellers on its behalf for a fee. The only items allowed into its warehouses will be baby products, health and household items, beauty and personal care, grocery, industrial and scientific, and pet supplies.

This means that stock for any items outside of those categories cannot be replenished until Amazon lifts the restriction. That doesn't mean you won't be able to order anything else right now, but stock will be limited until then. Amazon notes that it is applying this to its first-party products as well.

Doom Eternal: How Long Does It Take To Beat?

4 years 2 months ago

Id Software's Doom Eternal launches this Friday, March 20 on PC, PlayStation 4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with a Nintendo Switch port coming sometime down the road. You can check out our Doom Eternal review-in-progress for thoughts on what to expect, but how long does it take to beat? With it being a sequel to 2016's excellent Doom, it's worth looking at how Doom Eternal compares in length to its predecessor.

For those who haven't played it or don't remember, Doom clocks in at about 11 hours long, according to game length tracker How Long To Beat. Those 11 hours only included the main story, though; you're looking at closer to 16 hours if you do some side content and a little over 25 hours if you're a completionist. While Doom Eternal isn't available just yet, the sequel took our reviewer about 16 hours to complete, after gathering most collectibles and skipping some optional in-game encounters.

In total, Doom Eternal has 13 chapters that will take you anywhere from about 14-20 hours to finish, depending on how you comb through the game. Earlier this year, director Hugo Martin said Doom Eternal's main campaign is supposed to be well over 20 hours long, which does seem to be the case if you're being thorough--you can spend a fair amount of time investigating every last corner to find all of the available collectibles, which include various in-game upgrades, classic Id game soundtracks, and more.

Fortnite Update Adds Helicopters, But Servers Are Down For Some

4 years 2 months ago

Epic Games has rolled out a new update for Fortnite. The game's 12.20 patch is now live on all platforms, and while the developer is continuing its streak of not sharing patch notes, there's one obvious new addition to the battle royale shooter this week: helicopters. [Update: Epic says it's monitoring a variety of issues with the game right now, including those with the item shop, matchmaking, and logging in. In other words, you might have some trouble playing the game right now, because some of these problems have effectively taken servers down.]

The choppa is a brand-new aerial vehicle that can be found at helipads across the island. While it isn't outfitted with any weapons itself, it seats up to five players--one pilot and four passengers--and lets you fly around the map. You can take a look at the new vehicle in the trailer below.

Beyond that, some areas of the map have been update. As Fortnite News points out below, the oil rig has been destroyed, while the soccer pitch at Pleasant Park has been turned into a helipad.

How Persona 5 Royal Changed A Homophobic Scene

4 years 2 months ago

When I went to last month's preview event for Persona 5 Royal, I spoke with senior localization manager Yu Namba about some of the changes Atlus West made to the new version of the game. In our conversation, he mentioned that two gay characters, who were portrayed as predatory in the original version, had their lines of dialogue tweaked. Namba and company recognized the issue, saying, "the community had a very strong response," and mentioned the process the team went through to change these scenes.

Well, now that we have the localized version of P5R, I've been playing it and have about 60 hours clocked in at this point (you can get my thoughts so far in the video below). This also means we can see how these scenes have actually changed in the localization process.

The following is one of those scenes from the original version of Persona 5. It's the first time you encounter the two gay characters that approach Ryuji in Shinjuku:

Nintendo Switch Online Services Are Down

4 years 2 months ago

Nintendo's online services are experiencing issues at one of the worst possible times. Nintendo Switch players are currently unable to connect to the internet, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons' release is just days away.

The issues began this morning, with Nintendo's online network services going down across Switch, Wii U, 3DS, and web browsers, according to the official Nintendo operational status page. All network services are affected, which means you won't be able to play games or buy new ones until the problem is resolved. However, others have reported sporadic success connecting in specific games, so it can't hurt to still try out the game you're hoping to play.

Given the number of people currently stuck at home worldwide due to the coronavirus outbreak, it's possible the network could be overloaded. Xbox Live suffered a similar outage late last week that was resolved within a few hours, though the exact cause wasn't made public.

Persona 5 Royal Early Review Impressions

4 years 2 months ago

Persona 5 is a very long game. My first playthrough was about 120 hours, so you can imagine how much time I'll be putting into Persona 5 Royal--an expanded version of the base game--which I am in the process of reviewing. Thankfully, every hour of P5R has been (and continues to be) an absolute joy and a tremendous reminder of why I loved the original in the first place. It's a game that wears its heart on its sleeve, for better or worse, but when it fires on all cylinders, with style, music, gameplay, and narrative in harmony, there's nothing quite like it.

As of this writing, I've clocked in 60 hours and I'm about to head into the fifth palace, which is in September in the game's calendar--so I'm roughly halfway through. This means I've yet to see the more significant story changes in Royal, since they come later down the line. So far however, some great quality-of-life and gameplay additions, along with a few narrative touches, have improved what is an already rich RPG that brings heart and soul to its social sim and dungeon crawling mix.

Kasumi Yoshizawa has been touted as the star addition to P5R--a new playable character who gets involved with the Phantom Thieves and seems to have a major role in how the story progresses later on. There hasn't been anything dramatic with her quite yet, except in the opening casino heist that alludes to late-game events. In that moment, she shows off her combat style and has a cryptic exchange with Joker about a deal they've made before they part ways.

Borderlands 3's New DLC: Watch 12 Minutes Of Gameplay

4 years 2 months ago

Ahead of the March 26 release of Borderlands 3's newest campaign DLC Guns, Love, and Tentacles: The Marriage of Wainwright & Hammerlock, Gearbox has released a video showing off the first 12 minutes of gameplay. Despite the name, there are definitely far more guns than there are love or tentacles, but presumably those will come in time.

The DLC will have players working with wedding planner Gaige to make sure the union of Sir Alistair Hammerlock and Wainwright Jakobs goes to plan despite the many dangers of ice planet Xylourgos.

Gearbox describes the expansion as a "cosmic horror rom-com", and the few glimpses we get of The Lodge and its creepy bartender Mancubus are decidedly Lovecraftian. Players will also have the opportunity to explore the aptly named village of Cursehaven, and help the occultist townsfolk solve their eldritch problems.

Samsung Has Quietly Canceled Its Game Streaming Service

The announcement was so quiet that, despite being made on February 26, it's only been picked up by gaming and tech outlets in the last 24 hours.

The announcement doesn't provide much detail on why PlayGalaxy Link is being discontinued. "After many difficult discussions, PlayGalaxy Link will be ended on 27 March 2020 due to internal policy changes," it reads. Ending the service "will allow our Development organization to more effectively focus its resources and add value to the next release of new product."

Birds Of Prey Is Getting An Early Home Video Release

Variety reports that the film will be released for home video on March 24. It will cost $20 USD to buy on a variety of stores, including Amazon and iTunes. A rental option will come in April.

This is a big change because Birds of Prey is still in theatres, and it's happening in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The final trailer for the Trials of Mana remake has dropped ahead of the game's launch on April 24. Square Enix will also release a demo for the game this week, as Gematsu picked up on from the game's Japanese twitter account.

Xbox Series X: See How The Console Uses Ray Tracing To Dramatically Improve Graphics

4 years 2 months ago

Microsoft has recently shared a lot of details about the Xbox Series X. This includes a fresh look at how the console's use of hardware accelerated DirectX ray tracing makes next-gen games look even better. Starting off with a definition: ray racing is essentially a technological framework that allows for improved lighting, shadows, and reflections. It also helps create more realistic-sounding audio. In short, it's a way for developers to create "more physically accurate worlds," according to Microsoft.

Microsoft says the Xbox Series X is the first-ever console to feature this kind of ray tracing, and it's made possible thanks to the console's custom GPU made in collaboration with AMD.

The soundtrack, which will release through Decca Classics, will feature composer Dan Golding's adapted tunes from Claude Debussy's Préludes, which is made up of high and low energy versions of each track that the game dynamically switches between depending on your actions.

The album will also feature original music composed by Golding when it releases digitally on March 27, 2020. The release will be digital-only, although Universal Music Australia has told GameSpot that a vinyl release is "in discussion."

The Xbox Series X Is Not As Big As A Refrigerator, Microsoft Confirms

4 years 2 months ago

When the Xbox Series X was shown off for the first time in December 2019, people quickly noticed that the console looks like a refrigerator when placed in its vertical position. People created wonderful memes and mock-up images making fun of the console for looking like a fridge.

Microsoft is now taking part in the ribbing. The company released a new image of the Xbox Series X, showcasing its dimensions and comparing them against a refrigerator. At long last, we can be officially assured that the Xbox Series X is not as large as refrigerator.

While the Xbox Series X is not as big as the common household appliance, it is larger in some ways than previous Xbox consoles. Doom Eternal Doesn't Have Deathmatch Because The Mode Doesn't Feel Like Doom Anymore

4 years 2 months ago

Doom Eternal, which releases on March 20, will not have a traditional deathmatch mode, and is instead shipping with its own unique twist on multiplayer: Battle Mode. Deathmatch was the most maligned part of Doom 2016, but since the original 1993 Doom essentially created the mode, some might wonder why the latest game in the series would abandon it.

Now, in an interview with Shacknews, Bethesda VP of public relations Pete Hines has explained why Doom Eternal has done away with deathmatch. Hines gave a decisive answer when asked if he was "concerned" about the mode not being in the game: "No. That mode is eons old."

Hines recalls how deathmatch in Doom 2016 was handled by another studio, and ultimately did not fit with the tone of the game: "(It) felt really disconnected from the base game that everybody loved." Hines indicated that there was a disparity between single-player and multiplayer in that game. ""Whether you're playing by yourself or with others, we want it to feel like you're all playing the same game." That's as opposed to, "I'm a badass demon slayer in single-player, but when I go over to multiplayer, there are no demons, and it's just deathmatch.""

"I don't know what that has to do with [Doom] other than that, well, a couple of decades ago we had that, so we should just have that again," he says.

Fast And Furious Game Release Date Now "Uncertain" After F9 Delay

4 years 2 months ago

Fast & Furious: Crossroads, the new Fast & Furious game announced during the 2019 Game Awards, could be facing a delay. The game was due to release in May 2020 to coincide with the release of the next movie in the series, F9, but that film has now been delayed into 2021 due to concerns over cinema attendance in the wake of COVID-19 (coronavirus).

Codemasters is now assessing whether Crossroads will move its release date, too. In a statement, the company clarified that the launch of the game is now "uncertain," although that does not necessarily mean that it will be delayed. "Provided the company releases the F&F Game in Q1 of FY21, the Board anticipates that the later release date of the F9 Film will not have a material impact on its financial expectations for FY21," the statement says.

"A further announcement will be made in due course to confirm the release date of the F&F Game, following discussions with Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe and Universal Games and digital platforms," it continues.
