Another classic Star Wars game has released on modern consoles, with one more on the way soon. Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy is now available on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. Star Wars: Episode 1 Racer is said to be coming later this spring.

Jedi Academy puts you in the role of a custom-created student under the tutelage of Jedi Master Luke Skywalker. You'll progress down the path of the Force, earn new powers, and construct your lightsaber. You can also play online in 16-player matches including Siege, Capture the Flag, and Free For All. It costs $20.

Episode 1 Racer is based on the famous podracing scene from Star Wars: Episode 1--which is basically soapbox racing if the soapbox were attached to two gigantic rockets. No firm release date or price has been announced, but it was mentioned alongside the release of Jedi Acadmy.

Nintendo Switch Online Members Get A New Perk For A Limited Time

Nintendo surprised fans with a Direct Mini earlier today, releasing a slew of information about new and upcoming Switch games. The 30-minute video covered a ton of games, including a new perk available right now for subscribers to Nintendo Switch Online, the company's online membership. From March 26 through April 6, subscribers can access a free trial for Arms, a fighting game released in 2017 where fighters battle using extendable, customizable arms. The free play period includes access to the full game.

The free play period coincides with news that an Arms fighter is coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. This will be Challenger Pack 6, the first new character as part of Fighter Pass 2. The Arms fighter will be available in Smash sometime this June.

In Arms, up to four players can choose a fighter and battle together at once. The extendable arms can perform standard actions like punching, throwing, blocking, and dodging, and each fighter also has unique combat abilities. You can also charge up your attacks and customize your arms, which have various weights and elemental attributes that affect your gameplay.

Nintendo Direct Showcases A Bunch Of New Switch Games, Including Burnout Paradise Remastered

Today's surprise Nintendo Direct Mini was hardly mini, packing in a lot to its nearly 29-minute runtime. In addition to all of the Switch games and updates that were featured prominently--such as the Borderlands and BioShock Collections, Animal Crossing's next update, and Smash Ultimate's next DLC fighter--there was also a montage of other games on their way to Nintendo's hybrid console. Not all of them were new, but it did provide release dates for many of them.

Chief among these was Burnout Paradise Remastered, the beloved open-world racing game. This was previously released on other platforms, but it still makes for an exciting addition to the Switch's library, which isn't exactly overflowing with racing games. Unfortunately, of all the games in the montage (watch it below, starting at the 23:40 mark), it also had the vaguest release date, with Nintendo only saying it would release in 2020.

Bravely Default 2 Demo Available On Nintendo Switch Eshop

Nintendo snuck up on us with a surprise Nintendo Direct Mini presentation, and despite the name it was chock full of new game announcements and even some game releases. One sweet treat for RPG fans is the release of a demo for Bravely Default 2, the latest in the retro series coming to Nintendo Switch later this year.

The demo features a band of four heroes on the continent of Excillant. A tweet from Nintendo suggests that Square Enix is looking to collect feedback from this demo to incorporate into the finished game, so surveys will go out to those who download it. Unlike many other recent demos from Square Enix, this one doesn't mention whether your game progress will transfer to the full game.

Bravely Default is the latest from Team Asano, which created Bravely Default and Bravely Second before going a different direction with Octopath Traveler. The small team has become known for interesting retro experiments, and this third game in the Bravely series will probably continue that tradition.

Among other things, we got our first info on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's next DLC fighter.

The next character coming to the mascot fighter is from Arms, Nintendo's colorful 2017 fighting game. Nintendo didn't yet reveal the identity of the fighter, but this will be the first DLC fighter to arrive as part of the Fighters Pass Vol. 2, which covers six additional characters and costs $30 USD.

Control's Foundation DLC Explores The Board And The Bureau's Past

The Hiss threat might have been pushed back at the end of Control, but it still persists through the game’s DLC expansions. The first story based addition is The Foundation, an addition that gives Control's combat a more environmental focus, while providing a look at the origin of the Bureau of Control's use of a building that might even be alive.

Control picks up where the main story left off to tie up a loose thread: What happened to Marshall, the Bureau's head of operations. During the vanilla game, Marshall disappeared during the Hiss crisis to deal with some other, unknown problem. Turns out, she headed down to the Foundation--the lowest point in the shifting office building known as the Oldest House, and a place you only visited briefly during the course of stopping the Hiss from taking over the Bureau.

The Foundation is actually a huge set of caves running beneath the Oldest House, providing a new location to explore for the duration of the DLC, which runs five or six hours if you're willing to track down all its secrets. At the center of the cave system is a strange monolith called the Nail, which has been damaged and needs repair. The Nail actually seems to be a piece of the Astral Plane that exists on Earth, and which might give the Oldest House its power. With it damaged, though, you have a major problem: The Astral Plane and the Oldest House are beginning to merge, and if the process isn't stopped, both dimensions could be destroyed.

Resident Evil 3 Physical Copies Could Be Delayed In Europe

Resident Evil 3 is scheduled to release worldwide on April 3, but European players may have to wait a bit longer for physical copies because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Capcom Europe made the announcement on Twitter, saying the standard physical version and collector's edition copies could be affected by delays. These delays weren't promised, but local import conditions in certain regions could stop the game from arriving in stores on time.

"Although the global release date for Resident Evil 3 remains April 3, 2020, some European markets may experience delayed deliveries or availability of physical goods, including disc copies of games. We are closely following official regulations to ensure we are prioritizing the safety of our fans, employees, and partners," Capcom Europe said. "As such, we are in frequent communication with our local distribution and retail partners in each market to make copies available once local import conditions allow."

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Update Is Live, Reportedly Fixes Item Duplication Bug

A new patch for Animal Crossing: New Horizons appears to have fixed a pretty massive hole in the game's economy. The version 1.1.1 patch is said to fix a "serious bug affecting game balance," and many players have said this refers to the game's item duplication bug, which apparently no longer works.

The item duplication exploit became widespread quickly, allowing players to make copies of high-value items and sell them off infinitely. This made it easy to make tons of money much earlier in the game than intended, letting you pay off your house payments and buy tons of new items with alarming speed. That ability now appears to be gone.

It's far from the only exploit, though, as players have also been known to "time travel" to impact the game economy as well. That involves tricking the game's clock to make timed events pass more quickly or happen more frequently than they would in normal play. Of course, there are plenty of legitimate ways to make money too, if you're a smart (and scrupulous) investor.

Anthem Update Fixes Legendary Runner Issue

EA has released a new patch for Anthem to fix an issue with the weekly challenge not rewarding players with loot on completion. The weekly challenge, Legendary Runner, was supposed to give out 2,000 coins as a reward on completion and count towards the monthly count of challenges. After players had completed this mission once, the mission failed to reward players for any future completions of the same challenge in the following weeks.

Without this weekly challenge being counted as completed, some players were unable to unlock their monthly challenges, missing out on a chance to get a Masterwork Ember--a rare crafting element for crafting Javelin armor and weapons.

For players who have finished or attempted to complete the challenge previously, EA will be backtracking through accounts and accrediting them with rewards for each completion. These rewards should now be granted in-game, if they are not appearing make sure to reach out to the Anthem support page.

DC Universe Online, the free-to-play MMO for PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and PC, is expanding soon with the Birds of Prey. Their episode will debut on April 16, according to a post by Dimensional Ink Games' senior community manager, Ted Stone, on the PlayStation Blog.

The event will be available to all players who have hit level 15 or above for a limited time, and the team will consist of Black Canary, Harley Quinn, The Huntress, and Poison Ivy. While there's plenty of overlap, this isn't quite the same team as from the recent Birds of Prey movie.

The in-game episode will follow Lex Luthor having lost his mind and destroyed LexCorp Tower, which will send Metropolis into a panic. Playing through this episode, the player will repeatedly come into contact with the Birds of Prey team, regardless of whether they're playing as a hero or a villain. Explore mode will lower the game's difficulty without eliminating it, so players should still find it challenging--just not quite as difficult as the default mode (now called Survive mode).

The Nintendo Switch Has Now Outsold The Wii In Japan

The Nintendo Switch has crossed another major sales milestone in Japan. As of this week, the system has sold 12.8 million units in the country (thanks, Nintendo Life), which means that, in just over three years, the system has outsold the Wii in its country of origin.

This observation was made by analyst Daniel Ahmad on Twitter, who noted that the system sold about 390,000 units in Japan this week--the biggest week the system has ever had, thanks to the incredible popularity of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which just had the best Japanese launch for a Switch game ever.

As Ahmad points out, Nintendo managed to supply units for Animal Crossing's launch at a time where the system is facing production issues due to the COVID-19 pandemic--right now it's very difficult to buy a Switch in the US, and in Japan it's much easier to find a Switch Lite than a regular Switch.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Sets New Switch Sales Record In Japan

Animal Crossing: New Horizons couldn't have come at a better time, and its first week sales are indicating as much too. In the UK the Nintendo Switch exclusive has already topped physical sales charts and sold more than all previous entries combined, but it's in Japan where Tom Nook and co. are really setting sales charts alight.

Reported by Famitsu, Animal Crossing: New Horizons is now the fastest-selling Switch game in its first week, outpacing previous record holder Pokemon Sword and Shield. That's 1.88 million physical copies sold, which easily beats out the 1.36 million that both Sword and Shield sold combined during the same time. Everyone really wants to get their islands looking good quickly it seems.

The launch of New Horizons also impacted overall Switch consoles sales in Japan. A reported 392,576 units were sold in the past week, which is a new weekly sales record for the Switch across its entire lifespan in Japan. Famitsu also only reports on physical sales, which omits all digital copies and bundled ones with the Animal Crossing: New Horizons Switch variant, which also continually sold out before launch.

What The Hell Is Happening In Doom Eternal's Story?

Note: This post contains spoilers for the stories of, like, every Doom game ever (except Doom 3), and especially the story of Doom Eternal.

Even if you played Doom 2016, you might find yourself a bit lost with Doom Eternal. The game starts with a full-scale demonic invasion of Earth, doesn't make clear what's happened since the last game, and for some reason, gives you your own spaceship that's also a castle. Even if you're pretty well-versed in Doom lore, such as it is, you might find yourself lost at the start of id Software's latest.

While you don't really need to pay attention to Doom Eternal's story to enjoy its intricate combat, there's also a pretty intricate tale being told if you're interested in hearing it. The trouble is, you need to do a lot of the work yourself to follow along, which includes finding a ton of lore collectibles scattered throughout the game. Doing so rewards you with some big revelations about the Doom story, but if you'd rather just get back to ripping and tearing, good news: we've run down the entire tale and all the lore for you right here.

Games Need To Steal This Small But Crucial Bleeding Edge Feature

Like plenty of other squad-based multiplayer games that have launched in recent years, such as Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone, Ninja Theory's Bleeding Edge has a ping system that allows you to communicate with your team without actually speaking into a mic. As someone who doesn't always want to talk to his teammates when I'm playing online, it's a trend I hope to see continue in multiplayer games.

Though I'm not a huge fan of Bleeding Edge's ping system overall (most of its pings require two button presses instead of just one, making it difficult to use in combat), it does offer an option that I haven't seen in similar games. It's something that I've been hoping Respawn adds to Apex Legends one day--in fact, I hope most multiplayer-focused games steal this one aspect from Bleeding Edge's ping system. In Bleeding Edge, you can ping your squad to suggest a retreat.

Now, obviously, you shouldn't just run from every fight. It's better to win than run away, but sometimes you need to flee in order to regroup so that you can win the subsequent encounter. Most ping systems handle the concept of retreat the same way they do pushing forward--by pinging in a certain direction, your character informs the rest of the team that they should move in that direction.

Doom Eternal's Marauders Will Kick Your Butt, And I'm So Glad

Especially if you're playing on a harder difficulty, Doom Eternal's enemies are quite intimidating. Anything more than the lowliest of demons can often prove too much to stand toe-to-toe with, ensuring you stay on the move at all times. Eventually, a unique challenge appears in the form of the Marauder, who won't hesitate to kick your ass. It's great.

Partway into the game, you're confronted with a showdown against the Marauder. The encounter feels like a one-off boss fight, both because of the preceding cutscene and because the way in which you deal with a Marauder is quite unlike anything else in the game. You can't blast away or otherwise use standard tactics, as you can read about in our guide to beating the Marauder.

The tutorial window that pops up before this fight unfortunately gives away both the basic strategies (seriously, turn these tutorials off) and the fact that this isn't likely the only Marauder you'll face, but it's a memorable encounter nonetheless. Marauders carry a shield that effectively deflects any damage, and they'll switch up which attacks they use depending on how close you are; they also periodically summon a wolf companion to flank you and generally keep you from devoting 100% of your attention to the Marauder.

Bleeding Edge Guide: 9 Tips For Ninja Theory's MOBA-Like Action Game

Ninja Theory's new melee-focused action game, Bleeding Edge, is now out on Xbox One and PC. If you're an Xbox Game Pass subscriber, the game comes included in the service on both platforms.

At first glance, Bleeding Edge looks like it may resemble plenty of the character-based multiplayer games that have released in recent years (like Rainbow Six Siege and Apex Legends). However, the game has a lot of similarities to multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) games too, so there is a bit of a steep learning curve at the start.

Once you overcome that hump, though, Bleeding Edge can be a great game to play with your friends if y'all have nothing to do and are stuck inside all day. In the following article, we go over some tips to help improve your chances at succeeding in Bleeding Edge.

The Division 2 "Polarity Switch" Event Now Live

The Division 2 is well into its new season of content following the launch of the Warlords of New York expansion, and now its first global event has gone live. It's called Polarity Switch, and it adds some modifiers that will make your gunplay feel pretty different for a while.

According to a tweet from Ubisoft, Polarity Shift adds damage modifiers to both yours and hostiles' weapons. That will make you both tougher, and in the process earn you some rewards for playing with the modifiers on.

Polarity Shift follows a recent patch that made a number of adjustments across the board. Those include reworked health and armor values for enemies and allies, damage reduction for enemies and NPCs, reduced health and armor for elites, and more health and armor for heroic and legendary enemies. It also adjusts how progress works for seasonal manhunts in groups, and increases drop rates of certain items.

Half-Life: Alyx's 1.1 Update Adds New Movement Option

Two days after release, Valve has updated its VR hit Half-Life: Alyx with enhanced movement options. You can now use an analog stick to turn your perspective smoothly, as in most first-person games, a feature the game calls a Continuous Turn. As before the patch, you have the option of using the analog stick to turn in the direction you were already facing by a fixed number of degrees, which the game now calls a Snap Turn. Previously, it was known as a Quick Turn.

In this new setup, you can choose either to keep the Snap Turn or to change it to a Continuous Turn. If you choose the latter option, you can adjust the speed of the turn. You can also fiddle with the distance of the Snap Turn, or choose to turn off controller turning entirely. The patch added some minor improvements, including its detection of quality settings on some PCs. For more on the game's motion settings, check out our guide to Half-Life: Alyx's accessibility options.

Pokemon Sword & Shield: Last Chance To Get These Freebies

Pokemon Sword and Shield's ongoing Max Raid events are coming to an end later today, but that's not all that's leaving the games soon. A few freebies for the titles are also set to expire at the end of the month, making this your last chance to grab them if you haven't already.

You have until March 30 to claim a few different free items, including 10 Heal Balls, 20 Battle Points, and a free Bottle Cap. The latter two in particular are worth grabbing; Battle Points are used to purchase competitive battling items from the Battle Tower in Wyndon, while Bottle Caps can be used to Hyper Train your Pokemon at the same facility.

On top of those freebies, you can claim three free TR94s until March 30. Like the TMs of old, TRs are single-use items that can teach Pokemon new attacks. TR94 in particular teaches High Horsepower, a strong Ground-type attack that's especially helpful during Max Raids. Unlike Earthquake, which damages every Pokemon standing on the field, High Horsepower only deals damage to the target.

League Of Legends Studio Riot Games Donates $1.5 Million To LA Anti-Coronavirus Efforts

League of Legends developer Riot Games has made a donation of $1.5 million to various Los Angeles-based groups in an effort to aid coronavirus relief efforts. As reported by The Wrap, LA mayor Eric Garcetti announced at a press conference that Riot and its co-founders have donated more than $1 million, but it turns out the total figure is actually higher than what he suggested.

"We are blessed here in LA to have industries that not only fuel our city but our country and our world's economy. Gaming is one of those industries and one of the leaders in that space is Riot Games," said Garcetti. "They're based right here in our city, and today that company and its founders are donating more than $800,000 to local nonprofits including $200,000 to the Mayor's Fund to support whatever is needed for COVID-19 relief."

According to The Wrap, Riot later clarified that the sum is actually $1.5 million, $500,000 from the company proper, and $500,000 each from Beck and Miller. $400,000 of the total will go to the Los Angeles Food Bank, and $200,000 will go to the Mayor's Fund for Los Angeles, which goes to low-income or unemployed residents in need. The remainder will be given to LA non-profits.

The Crew 2 Is Out Now On Google Stadia

Two years after launch and right next to the release of a pretty big update, The Crew 2 finally makes its way to Google's cloud gaming platform Stadia.

The Crew 2's Stadia launch includes all current and future content available for the open-world racer. And with the game being on Stadia, and Stadia being accessible via the cloud, Google and Ubisoft tout this release as having a cross-save/cross-play feature between devices with access to the Stadia app.

Further, The Crew 2 has been specifically adapted for the Stadia platform. The Wonderful 101 Remastered Trailer Shows Off Visual Upgrades

The Wonderful 101 Remastered is coming to the US on May 19, to Europe on May 22, and Japan on June 11. In preparation for release, developer Platinum Games has put out a new trailer showing off the remastered game in action.

The new trailer is loaded with the color-coordinated action and updated graphics, showing off just how good it looks on modern systems. The remastered version makes a number of other tweaks and changes to modernize it for current-gen consoles. Those include a revised user interface--since the original game on the Wii U used its dual-screen functionality--refined controls for each platform, and some game rebalancing.

Platinum Games turned to Kickstarter for the Wonderful 101, ending its crowdfunding campaign at $2.2 million. Producer Atushi Inaba said that the campaign was mostly about gauging fan interest, and the more than 30,000 backers supplied that as well as a nice chunk of seed money.

Doom Eternal Rips And Tears Through Franchise Launch Record

Ripping and tearing is more popular than ever. Doom Eternal had an even better opening weekend than 2016's Doom reboot, setting a new launch sales record for the entire franchise and hitting over 100,000 concurrent players on Steam.

Compared to 2016's game, Doom Eternal earned double the revenue, according to publisher Bethesda. It was the best-selling game on Steam that week, as well.

These Steam concurrent player numbers are far higher than Bethesda's other recent games. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus peaked at just over 16,000, while 2016's Doom managed about double that.

Torchlight 3 Introduces New Class

Torchlight 3 is a very Diablo-like game, but it trades some of the gothic horror for steampunk gears and shiny brass. That's on full display in the latest trailer for the game, which shows off a new class: the Sharpshooter.

The Sharpshooter is a ranged class, with a variety of arms shown off, from a pistol to a wide-ranging rifle to their signature bow. Torchlight is known for making class hybrids out of the usual RPG archtypes, though, so this ranged fighter also appears to have a summoner-like ability with big effects.

The Sharpshooter joins the other three announced classes, the Dusk Mage, Forged, and Railmaster. Those are the four planned classes for when the game launches on PC later this year. The Sharpshooter is available now in the Closed Alpha test.
