Xbox Releases Statement On COVID-19's Impact On Exclusive Game Development

4 years 1 month ago

Microsoft has released a statement regarding the impact of COVID-19 on its upcoming exclusive Xbox and PC games. In short, no projects have been officially delayed, but Microsoft has acknowledged that its teams are facing "unique challenges and constraints" as they shift to a work-from-home setup.

2020 is a crucial year for Microsoft and the Xbox brand, as the Xbox Series X is lined up to release this holiday with Halo Infinite as a launch title. Microsoft remains committed to launching the Xbox Series X this year--the company doubled down on that earlier in March. But what impact COVID-19 has on in-development games--such as Halo Infinite, Grounded, and Everwild, among others--remains to be seen.

Echoing Xbox boss Phil Spencer's previous statements, Booty said the health and safety of its development teams is Microsoft's "top priority" currently. Additionally, the types of challenges that Microsoft's development teams are facing are also impacting other developers around the world, he said. Just recently, Bethesda delayed the much-anticipated Wastelanders update for Fallout 76 due to the coronavirus.

AMD Admits Its New Graphics Tech Has Been Stolen, Rumoured To Be The Xbox Series X GPU

4 years 1 month ago

Chip-maker AMD has acknowledged that a hacker stole some of the company's graphics IP and is reportedly demanding $100 million for its safe return. In a statement to its website, AMD said it was contacted in December 2019 by an individual who claimed to have access to "test files" for the company's current and future graphics products. Some of these assets were posted online to the graphics forum GitHub before AMD took them down with a DMCA notice.

This person has obtained "additional files" beyond the ones made publicly available, AMD said. The company said it's working with law enforcement and experts in its criminal investigation.

AMD attempted to downplay the significance of the breach, saying, "We believe the stolen graphics IP is not core to the competitiveness or security of our graphics products." The company went on to say that it has no reason to believe the hacker has any other AMD tech in their control at this time.

New Fallout 76 Events Detailed, Launching Alongside Huge Wastelanders Update

4 years 1 month ago

At the same time as Fallout 76's big Wastelanders DLC expansion goes live on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, developer Bethesda outlined two new events coming to the online action-RPG on April 7.

The first one, titled Riding Shotgun, sees players protecting a Brahmin-led caravan from the ruthless Blood Eagle gang. Those that manage to protect one (or both) will receive some loot, XP, and Caps for their troubles. But also during the journey, players are tasked with collecting lost items from the Blue Ridge Caravan Company's previous attempts to get the convoy up the steep cliffs of the Savage Divide. Protect the caravan and secure the lost supplies, and you'll be rewarded handsomely with "better rewards" for the effort.

Radiation Rumble is the second event, and it requires much more strategic planning as it tasks players with performing two jobs at once: defending scavengers in one place while collecting ore from another. Players will need to protect a bunch of scavengers from mysterious, glowing creatures. In addition to providing protection, you will also need to gather as much irradiated ore as possible to earn "gear, supplies, reputation, XP, Caps, or even legendary items." This event is recommended for level 50-plus players.

Fortnite Secret Passage Locations (Week 6 Challenge Guide)

4 years 1 month ago

It's Week 6 of Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 2, and that means the second set of Meowscles' Mischief challenges is now live for Battle Pass owners. Like the first batch, some of the challenges are themed after the Meowscles skin, so you'll be doing cat-like things like destroying doghouses. One challenge that may give you some trouble, however, is to ride the Steamy Stacks, a zipline, and use a Secret Passage.

Steamy Stacks is easy enough to find on the island, and there's a zipline directly south of it, so the first two steps of this challenge shouldn't be too difficult to accomplish. Secret Passages, however, might be trickier to track down, so we've put together this map and guide to help you out.

Where Are The Secret Passage Locations?

Secret Passages are among the new spy-themed features Epic introduced to Fortnite at the start of Season 2. Fortunately, there are a number of them scattered all around the island, and you only need to use one to complete this challenge, so it shouldn't be too difficult. We've marked down the locations of all the Secret Passages we've found below. We've also highlighted Steamy Stacks and the zipline south of it in case you need help finding those as well.

We've reached Week 6 of Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 2, and the second batch of Meowscles' Mischief challenges is now live. Like last week's set, a few of the missions have you doing cat-themed things like destroying doghouses, but one asks you to dance in three specific locations: Lake Canoe, Camp Cod, and Rainbow Rentals. If you're not sure where those are, we've put together this guide to show you where to go.

Where Are Lake Canoe, Camp Cod, And Rainbow Rentals Locations?

As usual, the three areas you need to visit for this challenge are spread out across the island. They're not named locations, either, so they're not readily displayed on the map. Fortunately, they're not too hard to track down.

Lake Canoe is the lake just northwest of Retail Row; you'll find it in grid square G5. Camp Cod is the island off the southernmost point of the map, in grid square G8. Finally, Rainbow Rentals is located on the beach southwest of Holly Hedges, in A6. You can see where all three locations are on the map below.

King's Bounty 2 Is Coming To Nintendo Switch In 2020

4 years 1 month ago

During today's surprise Nintendo Direct Mini, it was revealed that King's Bounty II is coming to the Nintendo Switch sometime in 2020. The upcoming turn-based RPG was previously announced for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, and is now making its way to Nintendo's handheld hybrid, too.

Developed and published by 1C Entertainment, King's Bounty II is the belated sequel to the original King's Bounty, which was first released in 1990 for the Amiga, C64, and PC. The sequel blends classic turn-based combat with third-person, open-world exploration, ditching the familiar isometric experience for a more modern style of questing and NPC conversing. The combat sticks more closely to the series' roots, offering strategic hex-based traversal, while also introducing a few contemporary touches with a renewed focus on the landscape of each battlefield.

You'll choose from one of three characters at the game's outset, each with their own unique story. These will change as you explore the realm, however, with your own choices and actions altering the course of the narrative as far-reaching consequences come back to haunt you. Each squad you lead into battle is made up of wholly unique units, too, each with their own skills and visual appearance. You'll build armies of humans, elves, trolls, and other creatures, forming a growing bond as you fight side-by-side.

Control Is Stupid Cheap For PS4 Right Now, Just In Time For The Foundation DLC

4 years 1 month ago

Remedy Entertainment's Control was one of GameSpot's favorite games of 2019, and now you can pick up the paranormal action title for its best price yet on PS4. Until March 31, Control is discounted to just $24 on the PlayStation Store, which is more than 50% off. The deal coincides with the release of Control's first story expansion, The Foundation, on PS4 and PC.

Control revolves around a secret government agency known as the Federal Bureau of Control (FBC). You play as new FBC Director Jesse Faden, who investigates paranormal activities in the agency's headquarters. Along with having a mysterious, gripping story, Control has a bevy of cool combat mechanics thanks to Jesse's supernatural abilities.

In GameSpot's Control review, critic Peter Brown praised the game's complex story, art style, and varied combat. "It's not often that a game invades my thoughts the way Control has. I'm at the point where I want to consume every last thing it has to offer. And if I'm honest, it also makes me want to go back and replay Remedy's past games, too. Sure, it's a faulty metroidvania in some respects, but there are so many exceptional qualities afoot that Control handily deflects any momentary ire," Brown wrote.

Catherine: Full Body Climbs Its Way To Nintendo Switch This Summer

4 years 1 month ago

Thursday's surprise Nintendo Direct was an embarrassment of riches, bringing new trailers, out-of-nowhere game releases, news about Arms characters coming to Smash, and 2K bringing three of its biggest franchises to the Switch. Among the spoils was the brief announcement that Atlus' cult favorite puzzle title, Catherine, will be headed to the Switch this July.

Catherine was originally released in 2013 for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PS Vita, with a PC port of that version released in 2019 as Catherine Classic. It's a strange little puzzle/dating sim hybrid about a scuzzy slacker named Vincent who finds himself in a love triangle between his responsible, career- and family-minded girlfriend Katherine, and a blonde femme fatale named Catherine. All the while, men all over the city are dying in their sleep, shortly after experiencing the same strange lucid dream Vincent's been having where they must complete a trap-laden sliding block puzzle that's like Jenga meets the Hellraiser box.

The Switch version will be a port of the Full Body edition of the game that released on PS4 in 2019 (and on Vita in Japan), which included a new love interest--a piano player named Rin--several new endings, additional puzzle mechanics that weren't in the original title, a new Safety difficulty, over 500 new stages in the game's more arcade-like mode, the Tower of Babel, and a full-fledged competitive online multiplayer mode.

Splatoon-Like Fighting Game Ninjala Launches On Nintendo Switch This May

4 years 1 month ago

After suffering a minor delay, free-to-play melee multiplayer game Ninjala finally has a new release date. During Nintendo's surprise Direct Mini livestream, the company confirmed that it will hit Nintendo Switch on May 27.

Ninjala is a multiplayer-focused (online and offline) action game not unlike Bleeding Edge, where two teams of four go against each other to see who can score the most points. It looks to combine elements of both Fortnite and Splatoon, with tons of customization for players to roll out in the flashiest ninja gear possible. Ninjala also features an eight-player battle royale mode and, as aforementioned, it's completely free-to-play.

Ninjala was originally scheduled to launch in 2019, but developer GungHo Online Entertainment pushed the project to spring 2020. We featured the game in a roundup of some of the Switch's biggest releases this year, which also included titles like Bravely Default II and Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition--both of which were shown off in Nintendo's mini Direct.

BioShock, Borderlands, And XCOM Physical Releases On Switch Require Downloads

4 years 1 month ago

As part of Nintendo's surprise Nintendo Direct Mini, the company showed off a trailer for a handful of 2K's biggest franchises coming as a set of compilations for Nintendo Switch: BioShock, Borderlands, and XCOM. Those will come as physical versions as well as digital, but the boxed copies will actually require some sizable downloads of their own.

In the announcement for the compilations, each of the three is followed by a footnote explaining what will and won't be on the actual game cartridge. The BioShock Collection cart will include the opening acts of all three games. The later content for each game as well as add-ons will need to be downloaded separately.

The Borderlands Collection cart includes part of the Borderlands Game of the Year Edition with another 6.6 GB to be downloaded, and then Borderlands 2 and the Pre-Sequel will come as a separate 35 GB download.

Ring Fit Adventure Adds Free Rhythm Mode With Music From Zelda Breath Of The Wild And More

4 years 1 month ago

Ring Fit Adventure, Nintendo's popular fitness-focused game for Nintendo Switch, has received a free update that adds an entirely new rhythm-based mode with songs from its biggest franchises.

Announced during the surprise Mini Direct, Ring Fit Adventure will get its own rhythm-based mode that lets you move along to the best of tracks from Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2, and more. You'll be doing a variety of moves like twists, ab holds, pushes and pulls on the Ring-Con, and more. Notes with specific move indicators come down three lanes, encouraging you to tilt left and right to reach them with the associated action.

In addition to the new mode, the update also brings new voice options to the rest of the game. You can now change the voice of your talking ring to a female one, and choose from a variety of languages including English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish. You can also explore the stages in Adventure Mode without combat, letting you focus only on jogging (or mildly squatting, if you're on silent mode) through them and collecting coins.

New Pokemon Sword & Shield DLC Details Revealed

4 years 1 month ago

Nintendo capped off its surprise Nintendo Direct Mini with some new information about Pokemon Sword and Shield. In particular, the company revealed more details about the games' first upcoming expansion, Isle of Armor, which is currently slated to arrive this June.

Isle of Armor is set on the eponymous island, which lies off the coast of the Galar region. The isle is home to a Pokemon dojo where aspiring trainers learn under the tutelage of Mustard, the longest-reigning Pokemon Champion in Galar's history and Leon's former mentor.

When you arrive at the dojo, you're gifted the Legendary Pokemon Kubfu from Mustard himself. As part of your training, you will eventually be able to challenge the Towers of Two Fists--the Tower of Darkness and the Tower of Waters. You can only challenge one of the towers, however, and the one you choose will influence how Kubfu evolves.
