Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's second fighter pass is its last

4 years 2 months ago

Nintendo's second season of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC characters will be also be its last.

That's according to Smash Bros. boss Masahiro Sakurai himself, writing in his weekly Famitsu column (via Ryokutya2089 and translated by PushDustin).

It means the forthcoming six characters included in Ultimate's Fighter Pass Vol. 2 will be the game's final additions to its bulging roster.

Rockstar sacrifices Grand Theft Auto 4 multiplayer to solve Steam woes

4 years 2 months ago

We've finally heard some news about Grand Theft Auto 4's place on the Steam Store today, but I'm afraid to say it's decidedly mixed, as Rockstar has announced it will return at the cost of multiplayer on PC platforms.

Why on earth is this happening? Last month Grand Theft Auto 4 was delisted on Steam thanks to its reliance on the Games for Windows Live platform. Rockstar explained to USgamer it was unable to "generate the additional keys needed to continue selling the current version of the game", as Microsoft had officially ended support for Games for Windows Live.

To solve the problem, Rockstar has now decided it will replace all versions of Grand Theft Auto 4 and Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City with Grand Theft Auto 4: Complete Edition "wherever it is currently digitally available", including Steam and the Rockstar Games Launcher. As a result of the problems with Games for Windows Live, multiplayer mode and leaderboards will no longer be available in Grand Theft Auto 4: Complete Edition. Sounds a bit incomplete to me, really, but here we are.

The best Dreams games we've seen so far

4 years 2 months ago

We're still nosing around Dreams because it's an unusual prospect and we want to make sure we understand it, but in the meantime, we wanted to share some of the things we've found.

The Dreamverse is a busy place. Launching in early access roughly a year ago was an inspired move. It means there's loads of good stuff to play already and it's curated well, sorted into various categories. The main one you should concern yourself with is the IMPY Award winners, which show off the best things made in year one. You can't miss them - the IMPYs are flagged with a huge image on the Dreamverse homepage.

But it's not just old stuff: it's genuinely staggering to see how much has been made since the game was released last week. There's real ambition on show and the beginnings of some very big dreams.

4 years 2 months ago

A new round of offers has just gone live over on the PSN Store, with some terrific prices up for grabs on Days Gone, Bloodborne and other top PS4 games.

Those of you who have been waiting for the post-apocalyptic adventure from Bend Studios to go sub-£20 will definitely want to give this sale a look now Days Gone is £19.49. You do need to be a PS Plus member to get this price. Otherwise, it's still a reasonable £24.99.

Next up in big PS4 exclusives for cheap, there's Bloodborne: Game of the Year Edition for £10.49. Again, this is another PS Plus only price, but it's only slightly more expensive at £11.99 if you aren't one. I've had it sitting in my library since it was a free PS Plus game ages ago and it's really about time I gave it go - even if I will be repeatedly stomped flat.

The story of the Atari Jaguar saviour that never came out

4 years 2 months ago

The year is 1994 and it's a typically bright morning in Sunnyvale, California. Chris Hudak is riding the Caltrain to work, powerbook in his lap, dozing in and out of consciousness. Arriving into the office sometime around noon, he rocks up at his cubicle and is approached by team leader and head designer BJ West. BJ has decided, in his capacity as captain, that his motley crew really need a staff meeting. Furthermore, he determines it would greatly improve morale if that meeting were to be held at the Brass Rail, a nearby strip joint. In the words of Hudak, they "all nod and gravely agree".

Dave, the DJ at the Brass Rail, is no stranger to these 'meetings' and celebrates their entrance by playing a load of industrial metal, much to the dismay of the girl dancing on the stage. The team share a pitcher of beer and muse on how this beats the hell out of spending the day at Atari's offices. Everyone agrees and the meeting is concluded. Begrudgingly returning to work, the team cap off the working day with a plastic dart gun fight, conducted with weapons procured from the local Toys 'R' Us. Another typical day in the life of the Black ICE\White Noise team, a group of rookie designers charged with the near-impossible task of saving the Atari Jaguar from destroying America's most legendary video game developer.

THQ Nordic confirms full Gothic remake after playable teaser proved popular

4 years 2 months ago

THQ Nordic has confirmed its intention to make a full Gothic remake after the recently-released playable teaser proved popular.

In December 2019, the publisher released a playable teaser to those who already had a Gothic game or any other title from original developer Piranha Bytes in their Steam libraries. The idea, THQ Nordic said, was that if the teaser proved popular enough, it would approve the development of the Gothic remake in full.

Over 180,000 people played the teaser, and after "unanimous feedback", full production will now begin at a new studio to be set up in Barcelona, Spain. THQ Nordic said it will take feedback to the playable teaser on board, such as the request for a "grittier and less colourful world".

There's an Animal Crossing Nintendo Direct happening this Thursday

4 years 2 months ago

And here it is! Nintendo has confirmed it'll finally be sharing more on its upcoming, highly anticipated Animal Crossing: New Horizons in a brand-new Nintendo Direct later this week.

According to Nintendo's announcement tweet, the Animal Crossing: New Horizon's Direct will be broadcast this Thursday, 20th February at 2pm in the UK/6am PT. It should last around 25 minutes, and promises an "in-depth look at Nook Inc.'s Deserted Island Getaway Package".

Simogo's sublime rhythm game Sayonara Wild Hearts is heading to Xbox One

Sayonara Wild Hearts tells the story of a young woman whisked away to a mysterious world of neon lights, masked bikers, and catchy pop, where, with the help of her alter-ego The Fool, she attempts to thwart Little Death and mend her broken heart.

What follows is a breathless musical extravaganza, melding time-honoured beat-keeping mechanics with gorgeously orchestrated, wonderfully varied arcade action, squeezing it all into a game about, as Simogo puts it, "being awesome, riding motorcycles, skateboarding, dance battling, shooting lasers, wielding swords, and breaking hearts at 200 mph".

Long-in-the-works EVE Online FPS Project Nova is officially cancelled

4 years 2 months ago

EVE Online studio CCP Games has confirmed its troubled EVE-themed multiplayer shooter Project Nova is officially cancelled, although work on a new sci-fi shooter, with expanded scope, will continue at its London studio.

Project Nova was initially unveiled in 2016 as a spiritual successor to CCP's long-defunct free-to-play PS3 shooter Dust 514. All went largely silent after that, however, and it wasn't until October 2018 that more on the game - said to offer a blend of "tactical co-op PvE and explosive PvP modes, with a strong emphasis on mastery and strategy" - was finally revealed.

Just one month later, though, CCP announced it would "return to the drawing board" with Project Nova, telling fans that the "gameplay experience in its current form does not live up to our original vision and would not achieve our ambitious goals for this project."

Romero's mobster management sim Empire of Sin gets a delay

4 years 2 months ago

Empire of Sin, Brenda and John Romero's intriguing mobster-themed strategy game, will no longer release this spring as originally announced, and is now scheduled to arrive in a hail of sharp suits, fancy hats, and tommy gun fire sometime this autumn.

If you've yet to receive the elevator pitch, Empire of Sin drops players into the seedy side of 1920s Prohibition-era Chicago, where the goal is to create a formidable crime empire from the ground up and become mob king or queen of the city.

That involves a combination of business smarts and, inevitably, violence, as you "schmooze, coerce, seduce, threaten, or kill" your way to success. Oh, and you can expect a healthy dose of turn-based tactical combat, reminiscent of XCOM, when there's blood to be shed.

A rogue Cooking Mama: Cookstar trailer has appeared

4 years 2 months ago

What's on the menu? A Cooking Mama game for Switch, apparently, and if a newly-discovered trailer is to be believed it could be arriving as soon as March. Emphasis on could.

The unlisted video was first posted on YouTube in November, but was only unearthed today thanks to a listing on Dutch store Nedgame. Publisher Planet Entertainment has now made the original video private, but you can watch a re-upload below. Judging by the fact half the video original video was just a black screen, it was clearly unveiled a little early.

The trailer gives a release date of March, and lists a retail price of $39.99 (£30.71), but as the video is a few months old and the linked website leads nowhere, it's worth taking this with a pinch of salt.

The cost of PlayStation 5: are we looking at a $500 console?

4 years 2 months ago

A recent report from Bloomberg has attracted a lot of headlines - the suggestion is that Sony is struggling to control construction costs for the PlayStation 5 and that the $399 pricing sweet spot enjoyed by both PS4 and PS4 Pro may be out of reach for the next-gen system. Bloomberg says that the current cost for building the machine is around $450, suggesting that a retail price of at least $470 is likely - but is the analysis accurate? Will the next generation consoles really be more expensive at launch than their current-gen equivalents?

Pricing of console hardware has been a topic we've raised in the past on Digital Foundry because the fact is that the economics surrounding consumer electronics have been growing increasingly challenging for console manufacturers in recent years, while the pace of technological innovation has also slowed down significantly.

Language app Duolingo is teaming up with Angry Birds

4 years 2 months ago

I'm almost at a 100-day streak on Duolingo, even though I feel bugged by the app's notifications into keeping going. I guess that's sort of the point? The game-ified language learning app makes things just fun enough - but it is still learning, and sometimes I'll need that nudge.

It'll get to 10pm and I know that I still need to finish a couple of lessons before midnight. I could skip a day, sure, though I'll use up valuable currency on a streak saver. And there's always the next achievement or leaderboard place to go chase.

Duolingo's constant nagging to keep going is theme of today's video - which sees the app's friendly owl mascot becoming ever more zealous and threatening as he interrupts a user's evening in the pub to make him play.

Hunt: Showdown review - a sweaty, stinking, cat-and-mouse masterpiece

4 years 2 months ago

A rough beast indeed, Hunt: Showdown, slouching toward the daylight after a couple of years in Early Access. A genre chimera, blurring survival horror with boss rush shooter and battle royale, not quite one thing, not quite another. At a glance you might confuse it with Far Cry 2 - there's the same malarial background hum, the same flammable brown palette - but in motion it's closer to PUBG, shunning the clear ground, ears pricked for proximity chat. It has the vivid markings of a Monster Hunter, but those patterns are really just for show, like the eye-whites of a killer whale - masking the gunsights protruding from its abdomen. You certainly wouldn't call it handsome, but you can't seem to drag your gaze away. How did something so... multiple ever survive the evolutionary process? But alas, you've looked for too long. It knows you're there now. No, don't try to run! The creature's girth is deceptive. We'll have to see if we can bring it down.

If Hunt: Showdown's unusual - and, as it turns out, fantastically exhilarating and engrossing - mixture of inspirations has a single guiding principle, it's that predators become prey. It's a game in which stepping on a twig while chasing a zombie can get you shot from a hundred yards off, and the time-honoured ceremony of a bossfight offers zero defence against the player lobbing dynamite through a window.

Xbox Game Pass continues to impress with yet another great line-up of additions due on Microsoft's subscription service soon. Most notable, perhaps, is Kingdom Hearts 3 on 25th February - which follows today's release of lots of Kingdom Hearts games on Xbox One via a couple of big compilations.

Rounding out the new console additions will be Jackbox Party Pack 3 (27th February), which includes mini-games such as the brilliant Quiplash 2 and T-shirt creation competition Tee K.O (which I have actually bought a T-shirt from).

Check out the flashy Cyberpunk 2077 graphics card you can't buy

4 years 2 months ago

If it's too good to be true, it probably is - and that's certainly the case with the Cyberpunk-themed graphics card teased earlier this week, which will not be sold to consumers. Better hope your luck's in.

Named the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti Cyberpunk 2077 Edition, the card is a collaboration between Nvidia and CD Projekt Red, and has been designed with the upcoming game's art style in mind. It's bright yellow, for a start, and has some flashy neon blue bits on the side. Should go nicely with some RGB lighting.

Although it comes with a custom aluminium shroud and styling, this is basically the standard Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti with a repaint. Which, to be fair, is a very good card that will run Cyberpunk 2077 nicely when the time comes.

Dragon Quest: Your Story movie review - faithful to the charms of the grand dame of RPGs

4 years 2 months ago

Maybe it's something to do with being wary about the optics of a man in his late thirties sitting on his own amidst a screenful of screaming six-year-olds, but this past weekend I couldn't quite bring myself to see my beautiful blue boy's debut on the big screen and instead watched another video game adaptation that's just hit Netflix. And I think I chose wisely, because it's an absolute treat.

Not much noise has been made about Dragon Quest: Your Story. Maybe it's something to do with how not much noise is made over here about Dragon Quest, a series whose spectacular success in Japan has never been replicated in the west, even if fans have been better served in recent years thanks to the sterling localisations of Echoes of an Elusive Age. Still, the addition of Your Story to Netflix in the west after its cinematic release in Japan last August barely registered.

Which is a shame, as while it's far from a great film it's faithful to so many of the things that makes Dragon Quest so beloved. It's not entirely faithful - this is a strictly CG affair, and as such it deviates from the iconic art of Akira Toriyama, even if the spirit of them - that wide-eyed wonder and those heart-lifting splashes of yellow and blue - remains intact. Despite that deviation this is a frequently beautiful film, though - this is from the same school of CG that brought us last year's equally lavish Lupin III: The First, and indeed in Takashi Yamazaki it even boasts the same director.

Assassin's Creed Syndicate is free on the Epic Games Store this week

4 years 2 months ago

Epic returns this week - one hand waving Assassin's Creed Syndicate, the other wafting Faeria - in another grapple for your affections, and with another batch of Epic Games Store freebies to jam unceremoniously into your increasingly unwieldy backlog.

Assassin's Creed Syndicate - Ubisoft's Animus-enhanced excursion into the smog-shrouded streets of Industrial Revolution era London - has a lot to commend. It offers another gorgeously convincing bit of period design, has a wonderful pair of leads in the form of wisecracking twin assassins Jacob and Evie Frye, and its score by Austin Wintory is utterly sublime.

It's definitely an Assassin's Creed game in the old mould though, and its creaking traversal and somewhat by-the-numbers open-world design pales in comparison to the fluidity and extravagant scale of the more recent Origins and Odyssey. Eurogamer's Tom Phillips liked it a lot back in 2015, however, awarding it a Recommended badge as he celebrated its "solid new adventure, beautiful London playground and renewed sense of fun.".

The Suicide of Rachel Foster review - a Shining-esque riff on Gone Home that doesn't quite dazzle

4 years 2 months ago

It doesn't take much to make a big, old, empty house feel creepy. Indeed, the more actual, overt threat you add to such a setting, the less fear it inspires - better to let your visitor wander undisturbed, drinking in the silence of the hallways and spotting goblin faces in the contours of broken plaster. This is one thing the creators of The Suicide of Rachel Foster grasp well, though their workmanlike blend of Firewatch and Gone Home is ultimately tripped up by a half-baked story.

A three-hour, first-person psychodrama with a gossamer-thin dusting of puzzles, the game is set in the Timberline Lodge, an abandoned mountainside hotel in 1990s Montana. You can roam about freely from the outset, though chapter breaks teleport you from room to room, and to do so is to be gently assaulted by the peculiarities of a structure that wouldn't seem out of place in Silent Hill. Floorboards creak, window-frames rattle, beams shift under a mounting weight of snow. Photographs stare from the ends of corridors, shrouded objects tempt you to pull back the sheet, and stainless steel kitchens tease your fight-or-flight circuits with their abundance of gleaming points and angles.

Spread over three storeys plus a basement and carpark, the Timberline is closer to a Comfort Inn than some Gothic resort, but in the absence of holidaymakers and staff, its spaces loom. It's also a not-so-discreet homage to The Shining's Overlook Hotel, which means that the sightlines and decor feel vaguely predatory, like they're trying to get into your head. You'll find those legendary geometric carpet patterns, a mountain diorama akin to the Overlook's model maze, and bathrooms painted a diabolical red.

Lara Croft's heading to Rainbow Six Siege… sort of

4 years 2 months ago

Ok, so it's not quite Lara Croft herself - but Rainbow Six Siege is getting its own Tomb Raider elite skin, and it'll be worn by American SWAT officer Ash.

The skin was unveiled as part of Ubisoft Montreal's two-year roadmap shown at The Six Invitational in Quebec, and will be available "soon after" the launch of next season's Operation Void Edge. There's no set date for this event - the first season of Rainbow Six's fifth year - which is due to add two new operators (Oryx and Iana) along with an Oregon map rework.

As an elite skin, Lara "Ash" Croft will likely need to be purchased in R6 credits, but at least she comes with a unique victory animation, a breaching rounds gadget skin, weapon skins (for the G36C, R4-C, M45 MEUSOC and 5.7 USG), and a unique charm. Time to raid the piggy bank.

Sort your PS4 or Xbox One storage with this 4TB external hard drive for just £65

4 years 2 months ago

Following on from last month's massive price drop on a 5TB Western Digital drive, you can now get a 4TB Seagate Expansion Desktop Hard Drive for only £64.99 at Amazon UK.

This hard drive is not only compatible with PC but can also be used to give you some extra space for your PS4 or Xbox One. With the increasing storage demands of games these days that 500GB or 1TB internal hard drive does get used up rather quickly!

While this is a spacious drive for the price, the only annoyance I can foresee is the need to plug it directly into the mains as well as your PC or console. The portable versions of these Seagate drives are USB-powered which saves the extra wire. If you have the means to power it easily, though, you could save yourself a decent chunk of money going for this desktop option instead.
